Unfortunately my son's care was not handled well after his tonsillectomy in October and I have to write this honest review to encourage others to seek out another option before having a child's tonsillectomy with this practice. My child had a very hard time post tonsillectomy and had a fever up to 102. I called numerous times to voice my concerns and was told it was normal and to continue on with the recommended plan of care. Then 5 days post op my son spit up a small amount of blood after hours, so we called the on call doctor (per the discharge instructions) and left messages numerous times. My son's bleeding stopped quickly and so we remained at home waiting for a call back. Unfortunately we didn't receive a call back until around 3 hrs later (THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE FOR AN ON CALL DOCTOR) when my son simultaneously woke up throwing up massive amounts of blood. Dr. Mark Clarkson, the on call doctor that finally called us back, seemed very nonchalant, despite me telling him my son filled up an entire sink with bloody throw up. Eventually he did tell us to go to the wrong hosptial (He said to go to REX, despite my son's surgeon telling us to go to WakeMed if we had any issues due to him being only 5 years old), which we were headed to WakeMed at this point regardless of what he said. My son was asking "am I going to die?" And it was honestly the worst night of my life. My son was starting to pass out on the ride to the hospital and threw up massive amounts of blood 2 more times. Luckily WakeMed was great and got him stabilized quickly. Dr. Clarkson took him back to the OR and was able to stop the bleed, however the top of my sons mouth also got burnt in the process. Then Dr. Clarkson had my son stay in PACU instead of being admitted despite the amount of blood loss we told him there was. His initial Hgb was 10.2 upon arrival to the hospital (his body hadn't had time to compensate for the blood loss yet so this was not an accurate representation), but it was NEVER RECHECKED. My son was ghost white, unable to eat or drink, crying in pain unless he was sleeping and completely miserable. I repeatedly told the PACU nurse I was not comfortable being discharged and she tried to get up with Dr. Clarkson numerous times. Finally Dr. Clarkson called and spoke to my husband and apparently indicated all of this was normal and that my son was fine to be discharged. We hadn't slept all night and made a poor decision to trust to doctor and allow my son to be discharged. The next 3 days at home were MISERABLE and I called in to the on call ENT and my sons original surgeon several times indicating what a hard time my son was having (not eating or drinking, excruciating pain, crying for hours at a time, no energy, pale) and all they did was give him oxycodone to help with the pain, didn't ask to see him or tell us to go back to the hospital. Finally I followed my mama gut and took him to his pediatrician where I asked them to redo blood work and his Hgb was only 7.5. They immediately sent us to WakeMed where he had to stay overnight and receive a blood transfusion. My poor son SUFFERED for DAYS because of Dr. Clarkson's negligence. Thankfully, my son has recovered other than some (completely understandable) anxiety and therefore lawyers aren't interested in his case. BUT I'm so thankful I can share his experience online to hopefully lead to others choosing another provider OR changes being made to Raleigh Capitol ENT's policies so this doesn't happen to another child in the future. read more

I brought my 18-month-old​ daughter in to see this wonderful group after numerous ear infections. Everyone was wonderful, kind, and made her feel very relaxed. We even had quite a bit of fun during her hearing test. They certainly​ have a very good approach with children and we will certainly return to see them if needed in the future. read more
