eCart has changed my life. I order my groceries online and don't even get out of my car to pick them up! And since they save my previous orders, it's very simple to reorder all my usual items. When I do have to go in, the store is very nice. It sounds silly to want things like nice lighting, wide aisles and high ceilings in a grocery store... but for someone who hates shopping, this makes all the difference. read more

I took my mom shopping at Raley's in El Sobrante. She's 85 and in a wheelchair with a broken leg. She can't wheel herself. She didn't want to drive the electric cart. She tried pushing a cart while I pushed her, and it was impossible. We searched the front of the store for a little basket she could hold on her lap, but there were none. A nice produce man explained that people walk off with the baskets, so they don't have them anymore. (I assume this is a result of the new bag policy.) He offered to get a courtesy clerk to shop with us, but that was just too weird. We left and went to Lucky, which still has little baskets and it was just fine, but I did not enjoy having to get the wheelchair in and out of the car again. Raley's, please keep a few baskets for disabled shoppers. We're sad we missed the sale on chicken breasts. read more

I don't really like reviewing chain stores or eateries, but I do it in the name of Yelp. When money is tight, Raley's isn't the first store that pops into my head. However if I have a little extra money, I'll choose Raley's in a heartbeat, especially for their produce. I'm not a huge fan of the layout of the store because I feel like I get lost every time I'm looking for olives and water. However, compared to Safeway, I feel like there's room to move around, and I'm not bumping into other customers (don't get me started on Molle Stone's in the City!). Ultimately, I shop here more than any other store now because it's so close to home and there's never an issue for parking. The checkers are decently friendly, too, but sometimes I still feel like I'm an after-thought while they are ringing me up. I get it checkers and baggers, you're bored and like to chat with each other. Many customers don't even like talking to you while they're being rung up. Mincemeat mania. First, I would like to award Raley's Benicia five big, fat, shiny, gold stars for their e-cart service. It has changed my life -- at least on the weekends. For the past several months I've been ordering my groceries online and then stopping by on Friday afternoons to pick them up. No more trips to the grocery store on those precious weekends. As much as I love this store, I love not having to do a weekly marathon shop even more! Of course, I still make occasional trips to Raley's which brings me to last night... On my way home I needed to run by the store for two last-minute items: ice and mincemeat. "Mincemeat!" you exclaim. "Who eats that stuff?" The answer is: my mother. She covets it. So every year at Thanksgiving and then again at Christmas, we make sure she has her very own mince pie. She is only only person who eats it -- a small slice -- every day -- until it is finally G O N E. Anyway, as I was saying, since I'm hosting the turkeyfest this year, I needed to stop by the store and since Safeway is closer to my house and nearly right on the path between work and home I thought I'd buzz in and out quickly and be on my merry way. Let me just say that I am not fond of the Benicia Safeway. Even after their remodel several months ago I still detest it. Small store, narrow aisles, clerks restocking shelves during prime shopping hours, limited selection, weird odor near meat department, long lines at checkout -- you name it. Again, the goal was to do a hasty in-and-out. After perusing the store (every single aisle -- at least twice -- not a clerk in sight ) I finally located the mincemeat on a teeny rack of holiday-specific foods at the very, very back of the store. There, on the bottom shelf were two pathetic jars of mincement -- a brand I'd never heard of. Each jar had a stream of dried mincement leading from the cap halfway down the side. Bleeeck. That's went I bolted from the store and headed to Raley's: my savior. Entering Raley's, I was immediately struck by the difference in the two stores. Raley's was welcoming, spacious, and, at the risk of seeming medicated, had its usual nice, positive vibe. I headed back to where I thought the mincemat might be, couldn't find it, saw a clerk, and asked if they had it. She not only replied that they did indeed have mincemeat but she actually led me to it! The best part: they had three brands and none had dried up goo drips on the jar. Man I love Raley's. As a result of my mood-elevating adventure, I treated myself to a huge bouquet of flowers on the way out. And, they were much nicer than those I passed several times at Safeway. read more

Just came here at 2 o'clock on a Thursday afternoon with my 2yo son thinking not a lot of people would be here.. boy was I wrong . It was SO crowded. I couldn't even believe they let that many people in the store. Also nobody was respecting boundaries or personal space AT ALL. I'm trying to get in and out because my sons naptime is 3 to 330 so I know he would be getting fussy. I shop and get in the shortest line ( that's still all the way around the corner and down the aisle) by the produce. There were two open check stands next to the line I was in that nobody was working. By the time I was next to be checked out my son was fussing and throwing his toys and wanted out of the stroller. (He hasn't been out in a long time ) The woman in front of me had a cart FULL of stuff. I'm trying to calm my son and they open the line next to me and tell the lady BEHIND ME to come over to her line to be checked out. At that point I said "ok whatever we are next, just wait" meanwhile my son is growing increasingly fussy. Then THEY OPEN THE OTHER LINE AND PULL MORE PEOPLE FROM BEHIND ME! I couldn't believe it. How inconsiderate and rude. I have been waiting in line the longest and now the whole line is being helped before me. Thank you to the sweet woman who let me go ahead of her in the line next to me because she saw the whole thing happen. Raleys is close to my house so it's convenient but I will not be going back. Train your employees to be considerate and take the next person waiting in line please. read more

This place is pretty decent for a neighborhood shopping center. The staff are friendly, the shelves always seem to be stocked. The worst thing about the place is the parking, but other than that, only a nugget or whole foods could really top this place. read more

Employees hardly want to help, and when they do, they are so slow. They will stare at you from behind the counter. Really, I'm just standing here just to stand here, no I would like something. Isn't it obvious. The pharmacy is terrible, they act like they don't see you waiting in line even though you are the only person waiting in line. This all happens on more than one occasion that I have been there. Why do I keep going back you might ask, because it's down the street. Been to many other Raley's with much friendlier employees and better experience. read more

Wow! Reading some of these reviews are making me laugh! Yes I agree the remodel is a tiny inconvenience but to be "in tears" over it, yikes!! How in the world is a store supposed to expand and become better without remodeling? I have to say seeing all the great things beginning to fill the shelves makes it extremely easy to put up with having to walk a little further to find something. Not to mention I get asked by extremely nice employees every step of the way if I am finding everything ok. Have you ever tried to find a Safeway employee when you are looking for something?! Good luck with that one! It's like we are getting a Trader Joes and Whole Foods combined with Raleys but still at Raleys prices!! Has anyone seen Safeways organic produce section lately? Best store in town and in our area for sure!!! The natural food selections are do great I don't have to cross the bridge anymore. Plus the bakery has amazing desserts and party trays. This place is great! I always enjoy doing my last minute pick ups. My wife and I also take the time to pick up more then the weeks worth of items. We spend a lot of extra enjoyable TIME speaking with friends and staff while we're there. Occasionally I'll bring and book and read before I shop. Christina is amazing. Jessica too. I just got back from the Raleys in Benicia, and as usual, I came back missing something from my list. Nothing in demand anymore this weekend than any other, a can of corn. They had NO canned corn on the shelf except their organic corn for 3 times the price, or cream style corn. I told an employee on my way to the check-out that there was no corn on the shelf, he just shrugged his shoulders and said he doesn't know anything about that. Didn't tell me it wasn't his dept., didn't offer to look in the back, and didn't offer to even tell someone that could remedy the problem. Customer service is not a priority in this store. Since the "Fabulous" remodel they greatly reduced the products they sell. The things we used to buy there they no longer carry, guess they had to make room for that deli bar in front. I've never seen more than 4 people sitting there, and one of them was an employee. And why is their "fresh" chicken frozen? I do all my shopping at Safeway now and only use Raleys when I'm short on time as I live just down the street. Raleys you were once a store I bragged about having anything you could want from a grocery store, now I dread even going there. read more

Raleys USED to be known for its great produce and meat selection. No longer. Over the past couple of years, the selection has been whittled down to the standard supermarket selection. Furthermore, the quality has taken a fall. Several times in the past two years, my wife (who used to work for Raleys) and I have gotten rotten produce contained in bags of potatoes and in containers of tomatoes. As far as the meat and seafood selection is concerned, that also has been reduced to the standard cuts and selection that you can find and any other chain. Adding to this decline is Raleys seeming corporate policy to change the location of items within the store every few months so that one can never find items one is looking for quickly and easily. Yes, I know this strategy is supposed to increase sales but I find it extremely frustrating and annoying. Add to this constant shifting of product the reduction of stock and you have a once great store chain sliding into mediocrity. To give you an example, Raleys used to pride itself on carrying local, California produced items whenever possible. One brand they used to carry was Rouge et Noir french cheeses, made locally in Petaluma. A while back, they quit carrying that brand in favor of the "President" brand that every other supermarket in the world carries. The deli manager at the store didn't even know that Rouge et Noir was a local brand when I spoke to him about it. Now, this may seem a very small nit to pick but it is these small details which separate the great stores from the average. If you want to try a really great store, try Vallergas in Napa, Andronico's in Berkeley, Mollie Stone's in Sausalito or Brown's Valley Market in Napa; then go back to Raleys and see just how far the mighty have fallen. Honestly, for the money, there are better places to shop just outside of Benicia and that is where I now do most of my grocery shopping. read more

So long Raley's, it was nice knowing you. The recent stock reduction/remodel has turned shopping here into a dreadful experience. The store is now a creepy, dark, cold, drafty echo chamber that doesn't sell the things I buy. Gone is the clean, bright, white tile floor. It has been replaced with... nothing. They just ripped up the tiles and polished the brown concrete beneath it to a dangerously slippery sheen. Gone is the false ceiling which trapped warm air in the space where there were people to enjoy it. Now they have... gray painted air ducts venting into tens of thousands of cubic feet of nothing. What little lighting remains is now spot. Great for eating a romantic dinner. Bad for trying to shop for one. Express lane? Also gone. Yes, a grocery store without an express lane. I'm not kidding. It's been MIA for over a month since they down-sized the check stands, which also don't line up with the impulse buy racks, making you zig-zag just to give them your money. They did add more self check out though, so I can do their job and not get paid for it. Brilliant. I'll get right on that. Some aisles run the full length of the store, while others are split down the middle, making navigating the store like running a maze. Not that it matters, since they probably no longer stock what you're looking for anyway. Most of the diapers, toothbrushes, and many other drug store type items have disappeared. Want Robitussin? Too bad. You get house brand. A dozen types of Bertolli pasta sauce is down to two or three. Green, red, and Romain lettuce? De-stocked. It's iceberg or nothing now unless you want to pay more for smaller heads of "organic" lettuce. As if regular lettuce were somehow inorganic. Albert's corn meal, present in every grocery store in the Western hemisphere will not be found at this Raley's anymore. You can pay more for a designer and non-resealable bag of corn meal, which will invariably spill all over your panty. Half gallon cartons of milk? No so fast. Gone. One liter bottles of soda? Nope. Not here anymore. Buy the 2 liter and drink the last third flat. Need to print some photos? Not here. The Kodak machines gone. Head to Target. Don't forget your bullet proof vest. This would be a one star experience now, but some of the staff seems genuinely pissed off with this mess of a store, so they get an empathy star. Also you can shop here and not feel like you have to take a shower like after standing in line next to most of the other customers. Wish I could say the same about Benicia's Safeway. read more

I can't say enough good things about this store, the staff is smart, friendly and helpful, the produce is great, they have all of my favorite brands of food, clean bathrooms, etc.... I've ordered cupcakes from the bakery for my kids last three birthday celebration and received compliments each time. I really love this store, I always shop with my two little ones in tow and never once have I felt rushed at the register, they always compliment my girls even when they are being crazy, nothing fazes these guys and it makes me feel comfortable, welcome and appreciated. My husband and I were home shopping this summer and one of the reasons that were on our list of why Benicia is a great place to live was how much I love shopping at the Raley's, I always run into neighbors and friends and I feel like it's the heartbeat of this small town, as cheesy as that sounds. read more

Our family LOVES the Benicia Raley's. I myself have been shopping there since I was 14 and my family just moved here in 1986. I have my own family now, and we still shop at Raley's. The bakery, deli, meat department, produce and Natural Foods departments are absolutely stellar. People that have worked in that store for years keep it a family atmosphere, and the new employees bring savvy, friendliness and knowledge to their departments. Kristine Rowles, Kerri Hansen, Robyn Meitz, Colleen Garcia, and Elizabeth Reyes - are among the few amazing employees. Raley's Benicia has gone through numerous remodels over the years, however this one is SO exciting! We can't wait until it is finished. I work in San Ramon and have Whole Foods, Trader Joe's and other super expensive grocery stores- however I choose to buy my groceries at Raley's for the quality and expertise of the employees. If there were 10 stars I would give them that! read more

I have shopped at this Raley's for 15 years now. On a par with other local grocery stores in the area( Benicia and Vallejo Safeway), but consistently higher prices than Vallejo Safeway. Meat dept has a comparably small selection and the meat is not as fresh as it is at other stores. The dates on the meat are usually only one or two days away when put out, and even then the meat usually smells like is starting to go off, not rotten , but meat has progression of braking down and the smells change (worked as a butcher for 28 years) If the meat is not used / or frozen quickly it goes bad. Meat and fish prices are also high compared to other local stores. The meat that is on sale is poorly trimmed of fat ONLY when it is on sale ( tri tip for example ,really negating any sale savings). Sales on any really wanted or needed items are few and far between. All stores have problems from time to time , but the ones I listed have been consistent for years now. I would rather have better prices, than the huge remodel they are doing now. Can't please everyone , but I am going to start shopping at Vallejo Safeway more. read more

I've gone here since the 80s, so it's been my default market for awhile. I like all the older employees, but the younger ones are hit or miss. I don't spend my money here to field their attitudes because I'm "interrupting" their socializing/skylarking with one another. I'm sure you're only working there until "your album drops" or whatever, but kindly keep the disdain for your employer and its customers to yourself. read more

Awesome organic foods selection! Closest we have to a Trader Joe's or Whole Foods store. The cashiers are friendly and the store is always stocked and tidy. The veggies and fruits are always the freshest around. That being said, I have to say that the set-up is confusing for a new shopper! It's sometimes hard to find what I'm looking for because they will have for instance, gladware and rubbermaid on two seperate isles when they are really the "same" thing. That's kinda annoying. Also, Raleys is EXPENSIVE. By all accounts the most expensive grocery store in town, BUT they provide costumer service which is rare these days. read more

This store is down the street from my house. so the accessibility is great. Years back i would not shop at Raley's. Prices has come down in years. not my first grocery store of choice. But it's cool. the store itself is perfect for the community. Has a full deli, seafood and very large fruit and vegetable section. Alcohol and wine section is large also. Service is great, parking is cool. Wells Fargo Bank is inside, also. Propane tanks are also available,onsite. read more

I have mixed feelings about this Raleys. On the plus side, it has a Wells Fargo inside and has a ton of nifty things like a deli and non-food stuff. Its also in a shopping center with a lot of other business I use. However, prices seem steep. Somehow, Safeway seems cheaper, maybe because I always focus on the onsale stuff when I'm there (or at any store.) Raleys seems to have less on sale and the sale prices seem silly (9 cents off an item costing 3 dollars?). I'll do a few more runs and use the weekly ad and see how it compares. I'd love to convince myself its cheaper that Safeway but I'm doubtful. I definitely agree the aisles here are much more spacious than at Safeway though! read more

I ordered a premade sandwich from the deli, a number 8, Rubicon Bbq. The lady behind the counter who made it Jazmyn, absolutely butchered my sandwich and completely drowned it in bbq sauce, it was seeping through the bread all over and there was no place I could hold it without grabbing a handful of bbq sauce covered bread, not buying another sandwich while shes behind the counter. read more

A bit on the pricy side, but it's better than Safeway due to a generally smarter staff and a section devoted to organic food (Which alone is enough to push it up to four stars.) Oh, and if you bring in a reusable bag, it takes five cents off your purchase. read more

Whatever you do make sure you get there more than 10 minutes before they close because I got there at ?:52 on my cell phone which has to be correct and the manager already locked the door and would not let me in! I'm super sad that after the remodel this store is now ugly, cold and boring. It's more difficult to navigate as well. The only good thing is the sky lights. Most of the time they are out of at least one item on my list. I find that when I buy bread here (the same brand I get at Trader Joe's) it molds faster. Maybe because when they take it out of the freezer they let the condensation collect inside the wrapper? Every once in a while it's still really wet on one side. Prices are not great. I'm generally happy with the produce I buy here, but I've had a fair amount of bad avocados and citrus. They best thing is the nice, pleasant staff. read more
