Raley's has a problem,...often there are not enough checkers. Prices are high. Self check out is often an issue because the machines do not provide clear directions...so for example, today....it would not accept my credit car as directed to slide it through. Tried twice no luck. Dealt with checking out two items which should have been quick. Ultimately, it worked. It seems there is a delay in these machines. Asking for and gettin help at these machines at any stores including this one....is like meeting folks who are reluctant to believe you had a problem with them. Bad attitudes sometimes. I get the impression that workers are not too happy here. Not surprising since the wages are not living wages. read more

Wow... long story short came in for the hot deli foods or the hot bar, you know, quick meal. I left with Stouffer's Spaghetti and Meatballs frozen dinner. Around 6 pm, Thursday night I looked over the hot bar. It's a steam table setup, the food looked like it's been there since last night. Dirty baked on crusted pans. Portions smashed by other customers, empty pans. I should've taken pictures. So I went over to the "Taco Bar", same story and I thought if this is the food they're showing the customer, what does the back look like? Hence, Stouffer's to the rescue. I went back today to get more suishi at Raleys in Grass Valley. I pre-ordered on the phone to ensure I got what I was craving for. Ordered 2 of the spicy crunchy rolls, a made to order poke bowl (I added tuna) and the chefs sampler. This is for 3 people to share today! A special thanks to KIMMIE for going out of her way to get my order in as the suishi station was not answering. For starters a nasty cashier and difficulty ascertaining correct prices. I have been in since the nasty cashier and experienced some very nice cashiers. The price confusion is still in place. Huge turnaround in staff. New faces at registers everywhere. Baggers are scarce. Fruits are never sweet. Grocers ignore you.

I'm writing this review while standing in line for the only open register behind eight other people. The meat counter has been closed after 5pm for months, and the deli now closes early as well. For people who work, this presents a special challenge. Any staff asked simply tell you they are extremely short staffed... being short staffed while a corporation like Raley's rakes in BILLIONS ($3.2b in 2023 alone) in profits is a decision being made by corporate that directly impacts its staff and customers. Not a good look! While in the store tonight, the staff randomly decided that they were closing at 8pm and locked the doors. The only reason for the two stars instead of one is because the staff is exceptional. It's too bad their corporate overlords do them so dirty and let them take the heat for what equates to plain bad management!! read more

After shopping at Raley's in Grass Valley on Tuesday night (11/28/2023), I left without collecting my $60 cashback. I didn't realize it until later that night. The next morning, I went back to Raley's with my receipt thinking that surely when the cashier closed out her register the night before she would have been $60 dollars over. I showed the receipt to a woman working on the self-service lanes, she went to the backoffice for a time and then came back and said there was no record of an overage. She said that the bookkeeper would have to call me back. I left my name, phone number, and the receipt with her but she left me feeling like I was trying to pull a fast one. It's been two days and I haven't heard from anyone at Raley's. I tried calling the store and no one would pick up on the general line. I am mad and sad. I know that most people who work at Raley's are honest but I will not be shopping there anymore because the whole situation has left a bad taste. Note to management: Safeway cashiers seems to have a policy of double checking receipts by circling the net amount with a pen (or the tip of their finger which leaves a mark). This seems like a good way of protecting the store from cheating customers and honest customers from cashback errors. 2nd note to management: I moved on. Please save your "We apologize for....Rest assured...." bullshit for someone else. read more

Raleys store 213 cashier by the name of James was very rude at checkout. I chose to go to a different line due to his inappropriate commentary and refusal to assist me without having a passive aggressive attitude. I would highly suggest explaining to him what appropriate and inappropriate jokes and commentary are for work. Highly disappointed in the service I received. Went to Raleys in Grass valley yesterday and they only had two checkers open along with the self check out area. The lines of people waiting to check out was SO long that it went beyond the produce area, which is nearly halfway to the back of the store! The same went with the self check lane. One checker had worked 9 hours and had to leave. Extremely short staffed and the district manager (Michael Vidot?) was not available. Unacceptable for a business that we depend on! And, this was NOT a holiday...it was Monday. read more

So tired of shopping at Raley and having to check the date to see if expired. So many times came home with expired food. So I started shopping at Safeway. I needed some quick items yesterday and got some juice. I checked the date on everything I bought (yes lots of things on the shelf expired), but I didn't check the date on the Naked Mango juice. Just opened it and it was chunks, checked the date and it December 9, 2024. I'm going there tomorrow for my refund and back to shopping at Safeway regardless of what I need or convenience. read more

Their online service (Raleys eCart) in Grass Valley has always been hit and miss, but today tops all prior bad experiences. In short, I placed an order at 11:55 a.m. for the first available time slot (7 pm). I received a text at 4:12 that said 'we have finished gathering your groceries' and listing two items as 'unavailable'. I then received an email at 4:26 saying 'your order is ready for pickup'. I arrived there at 5:30, called to say which pickup spot I was in, and was told that because my time slot was 7 pm I couldn't pick up my groceries. I asked to speak to the store manager, and was given 'Cora' (who claimed to be the store manager but who was the least professional one I have ever dealt with). Cora told me that the email was a mistake, and that my order had not even been assembled yet and that I should call Raley's 800 number to find out why I had received the email. I pointed out that I had also received a text saying the order was assembled and that two items were out of stock (which indicates the order had indeed been assembled). Cora said she didn't know why that was. I then cancelled the order. The only thing she didn't say, but which was obvious, was that she just didn't care. And by the way, I was the only car in the pickup area at the time. This attitude and level of service is why, after decades shopping at Raley's, I months ago switched to doing the majority of my shopping at Safeway. UPDATE: May 10, 2024. I had hoped the cancellation of the order would end things. Over the next couple of hours, when I didn't receive a 'your order has been cancelled' email I called to see what was happening. Twice I was told it would be cancelled within the next hour, but it wasn't. Then much to my surprise I received a text saying 'Your Raley's order is ready for pickup!'. I called again and was assured that this time it really would be cancelled. Then, this morning, I checked my bank to see if the pre-pickup 'hold' had been reversed. It had, but -- surprise, surprise -- I found that I now had been charged for the 'completed' order which had never been picked up. I called the store and talked with Mike, the actual store manager. He said he was aware of my initial review and was baffled, but had been planning to talk with Cora when she got in, in about an hour. I told him the most important thing at this point was that the order be cancelled and the erroneous charge for $98+ be reversed, and that I understood it would take 3-5 days for the refund. After several hours I called back to confirm that it had been reversed (there's no such indication on my Raley's account) and was told by Mike that the order couldn't be cancelled because it had been 'completed', but they had indeed issued a refund (which would take 3-5 days to show up at my bank). I asked what he had learned from talking with Cora, and was basically told she had no explanation. I also asked how it was that I was charged for the order I never picked up, and he had no answer. Along the way through all of this, both Mike and Cora thought it possibly could be a problem with 'the technology', and Mike had said he had sent a message to the tech people to find out, but didn't expect an answer until Monday and that he would not be back at the store until Thursday. We agreed to pick it back up then. I also asked Mike if I could receive an email confirming that the refund was in process and he said that would need to be done by corporate customer service and that he would contact them to have the email sent to me. Finally I asked him what sort of recompense Raley's could offer for the hours I wasted as well as the expense of gas driving there and back. He offered a $25 gift card. I told him this in no way covers my time and effort dealing with Raley's various screw-ups, and he said I would need to contact corporate for any additional recompense. He also said I would need to come into the store to pick the gift card up and I requested he snail-mail it instead, and gave him my address. FINAL UPDATE: May 17, 2024. I replaced my order, with a pickup for 9 a.m. on Tuesday. Got an email that it was ready. Called to confirm, and asked what the final total was. Turned out to be almost $30 more than the original order showed ($146 vs $118). I asked why, and was told to call the 800 number as they would have the receipt. Called the 800 number and was told they wouldn't have the receipt until the next day. Not wanting to go on another hours-long chase, I cancelled the order. As for the earlier incident, I finally spoke with Mike. He hadn't heard back from the tech people, but would email them again. He also told me that the $25 gift card was in the mail. So here's what I think happened originally: it was no technical glitch. The order was ready but Cora decided that I had to wait for my scheduled pickup time despite the text saying it was assembled and listing the out-of-stocks, as well as the email saying it was ready. She then lied about it. read more

On top of that, they run special sales on Mondays and Fridays and then don't staff up appropriately so we wait in line FOREVER!!! They have 3 maybe 4 checkouts open out of 8 and no baggers!!! I was in the store August 25, 2024 and there was a man with a Great Dane blocking an aisle. He dragged the dog to one side, but I wasn't inclined to pass that dog. I learned that the dog was not a service dog and I sought out a manager. Her name was Cora and she stated that "technically" she couldn't "ask for papers." Papers? How about just telling the man that Raley's can't allow pets in the store because it's a health code violation." I wondered how she might handle if someone was wandering around the store smoking a joint, a cigar, a or a cigarette because "technically" that's legal. A Of course Cora could do something. She could ask to see a rabies tag and if one was not displayed, then ask the dog owner to take the dog out of the store. It's a Nevada County Code violation for any dog over 3 months to be outside the home without a rabies tag and any dog not displaying a rabies tag can be impounded. Cora could have done something and chose to do nothing. Okay, so here's why you don't want dogs in a grocery store. First, they pee. They pee in the aisle and you could slip in it or simply step in it. They pee on the shelves - on food and other goods. A man died not to long ago from drinking out of a soda can that had animal urine on it [wash all your cans before opening them and especially if you shop in a store that welcomes dogs]. A grocery store in the Bay Area got a visit from the California Health Dept. who sprayed the lower shelves of the store with luminol and found so much urine on the goods that the store had to throw out $1000s of stuff. Also, dogs defecate in the aisles. That's the "clean up on aisle two!." Dogs carry bacteria in their saliva [they eat their own excrement]. Here are some of the infections that you can get from a dog: Giardia, Cryptosporidium, Clostridium, E. coli, Salmonella, Pasteurella, Leptospira, and Campylobacter. And they carry viruses like Covid in case that is a concern. But, technically, that's not Raley's problem. If a dog bites you and the owner and dog stick around, you had better hope the dog has had a recent rabies shot because, if not, you'll be getting several. And they are very painful going into your stomach. Ever had ringworm? Just pet that strangers dog and you might get it. And, if you are wondering how your indoor pet got fleas. Well, you might have carried them home from the grocery store. But, hey, technically Raley's is not interested. read more

How is a customer supposed to shop in the store when there are so many displays it becomes a-trip and fall hazard, or the source of grocery store road rage. So today in addition to all the blockage in front of the deli and Meat Dept there were four people stocking shelves with their stocking carts. No one noticed that the customers couldn't get through. We were just in the store this evening, and the Panera Broccoli Cheese soup we were purchasing, which was signed at $6.99, rang up at $7.99. We were originally at self-checkout, but there was nobody working at the front of the store and no one in sight,, so we walked over to the refrigerator case where the soup was to make sure that we'd read the sign correctly (there were no other customers). Once we were sure that the signage was correct, we canceled our transaction at self-checkout to go in search of an employee who could straighten out the pricing discrepancy. After a few minutes, an employee showed up, she approached us (a woman with short, white hair), and we explained what was going on. She rang up the item at $7.99, we had a picture of the signed price at $6.99, and she was obviously very annoyed that we requested a price adjustment for the advertised price where the soup was displayed, and said that the date on the signage was "like a year old or so." We understand that adjusting pricing can be frustrating for employees, but we as customers have no control over Raley's signage. It is up to the store to ensure their pricing is correct, and if it isn't, please don't be rude to customers who point out the difference and request an adjustment. We know we're not special, but we have shopped at this store for decades and have always been respectful to employees of the store and don't deserve to be treated poorly for YOUR oversight. We were understanding but expected to pay the signed price without being treated like crap. Most employees at the Grass Valley store are friendly, and we've known many of them for as long as they've been employed at the store and have a great rapport with them. We know that customer-facing jobs can be a challenge for some people, but as someone who works in customer service, this woman should be aware that behaving in a civil manner towards customers is a requirement in her position. We did not deserve her unprofessional, ill-mannered reaction. read more

This place rips us all off. there sales are a total joke. Example, avocados 5 for $5 dollars, really? your taking advantage of people that don't know better. We make the trip to Walmart and Costco. The distance very much makes up for the rip off that Relays offers plus we get our gas there or at Costco for much less than grass rip off gas stations. Folks try it out and see for yourselves. There sales are an insult to anyone that is trying to make it on retirement checks or is not of the means to afford much. You can get all you dairy products and great vegetables at Walmart or Costco for much less, meat at either with Costco have the advantage of good meats, chicken or fish. read more

At self check out at 2:30pm September 5, 2020 I asked if checker could scan the 25 lb bag of carrots. I thought she had a wand but she didn't. Instead she came over and said yes she could telling me as she lifted the bag "YOU have to lift it" and then slammed the bag with all her strength back into my cart on top of my groceries. It was a stunning display of an anger management issue out of control. We wanted to just walk out but didn't because we'd then have to go shopping elsewhere. We are new to the community but certainly will not be returning. For management she was about 35, brown hair, and neither the union nor manager should be tolerating this type of behavior that costs customers. Thanks to managment for responding. I worked at a large grocery chain for more than a decade so I understand that people have bad days, and customers can be a pain but this was so over the top I had to respond. read more

I am not local to Grass Valley & I am here for the weekend. Came to Raley's because I needed a few things. I was impressed with their wide selection of non-traditional grocery store items like outdoor collection, stationary needs, & even the large selection of laundry supplies. Specifically they offer many Seventh Generation products, which was important to me. The produce that I purchased was quite fresh & delicious. My only comment would be that their prices are a bit on the high side. read more

The store inside is nice and remodeled. Some or most of the workers are pretty nice.The deli sandwiches are quite good. Bakery items really nice and fresh. Selection of "with it" items like natural products and organic items, etc are excellent compared to some of the other stores in the area. Meat and produce are just "OK". The checkout could be better. For example, a family member was told she had to pay for lettuce that came with a deli sandwich but was packaged separately (marked "free") from the sandwich. The assertive checkout clerk insisted she pay "but would let her go this one time" Oh brother. Is this how you talk to a weekly customer? The checkout system itself is very slow due to not upgrading the POS equipment at the last remodel two years ago. If someone ahead of you writes a check you may feel like you are in a time warp, since day can turn into night while they make certain the check is "alright". However the far biggest problem with this store is the parking lot, which often has no decent places to park during peak hours, nor room to get out of the car due to how narrow the Honda Civic sized spots are. This is a town full of large pickups and suv's due to the rural nature of the area. In addition, there are spots where a normal, average vehicle can park where literally no one can get in or out of the car (very worst example of this is the "plant pot parking spot" on the left side.) This is unacceptable. On two recent occasions I've had people slam their doors into my vehicle with no care if it dinged the car. This behavior is unacceptable anywhere, but it is much more likely to be a problem at this Raley's with the small, tiny, narrow "Corbin Sparrow" sized parking spaces. This shows very little regard for the customer experience on the part of management. Raleys needs to re-stripe the parking lot so that people can get in and out of the car safely, and much further down the list, not worry about their cars. Shopping at Raleys should be something to look forward to, not something to be stressed out about. Oh wait.... the prices are stressful here, too. Forgot about that. At least the deli is good! read more

Oh Raley's! Please charge me a nickel for water, simply because you can. The health food section, vitamins, personal care, you're gorgeous honey! Some of the merchandising is confusing and the store layout. Soap, flowers, and produce, oh my!! Improving on the friendliness of the cashiers. Has a sensitive, self-checkout that isn't usually well monitored, unfortunately. The patrons are less aggressive than in other stores as well, maybe because they're juiced up on the healthy foods they sell here! Meat and bakery is always well stocked, organized, and convenient items are properly displayed for quick access. read more

I like Raleys as a store but the ecart set up is a joke. Arrived at my designated time for pick up, checked and sat for 26 minutes. Watched them deliver one car at a time. Finally was approached by an employee and told it would be another 15 minutes at least!! "They're pulling my order now"!! I'm sorry but heck no I have things to do. She then said "it's Christmas time (Dec23), didn't anybody communicate to you we would be behind?" Um no lady. I placed an order and am here to pick it up and nowhere in my confirmation email does it say that during the holidays expect to wait a dang hour to pick up my groceries. Your store is very nice and clean. It has a great selection of quality items. The staff however has a lot to be desired. The workers do not even acknowledge your presence while strolling through the store. The checker (a short, heavyset, middle aged Hispanic woman) did not utter a word to me other than "paper or plastic" with a disdain. I realize we all have bad days, but this behavior was unacceptable. If a "hello" or "did you find everything" is too much for her she might be better off working on the loading dock. I'm not asking for my butt to be kissed nor do I need to be treated special. I do expect a little common courtesy while patronizing your business. I hope this is not the image you wish to project of your store. If so, I will gladly convey my experience to everyone I know and take my business elsewhere. read more
