It's a champagne store in a town where most people are on a beer budget. It's clean. Staff is indifferent and dismissive. Nice selection of high end items, if you can afford their prices. Raley's is definitely my favorite grocery store in Merced! A lot of people have told me that they avoid it because they think it's too expensive, but, honestly, they are about the same as Save Mart for a lot of their items. Obviously, the organic stuff will be a little pricier, but that is everywhere you go. I absolutely LOVE their deli! In the morning they make delicious breakfast burritos. They also have yummy sandwiches. Their lunch/dinner plates in the deli are super yummy as well! I love their fried chicken plate! Ready-made sandwiches, salads, and other food in the deli are all of good quality and delicious. Customer service at Raley's is excellent! Everyone is always extremely friendly and all the cashiers are cheerful as they ring you up. I love that I get money back every few months for the points I've earned! The Raley's Something Extra card is so convenient because you can accept coupons through your account online and don't have to remember to give it to cashier when you're going through the check-out. read more

I can review only the deli: I bought fried chicken (3 thighs, 1 leg,) potatoes and gravy, and crispy salad which I took home and enjoyed. The potatoes were so much better than one gets at KFC. I bought the stuff around 11:00 a.m. which I think is key for the best flavor because it was freshly cooked. Price was another matter. I thought it was awful expensive, but then I think everything in Raley's and most supermarkets is outrageously priced. (I'm a Walmart shopper and spoiled to their relatively low prices.) And I'm also an old geezer who remembers sugar at 63¢ for five pounds and 31¢ loaves of bread! read more

This is my 200th review. (Pause for drum-roll, applause, and clinking wine glasses). I saved Raley's for this momentous occasion because among other things, this is the place that led me to meet and date my boyfriend. Here's hoping it happens to you too! OK, aside from that silly tangent, this is hands down the best grocery store in Merced. It's well-stocked, clean, bright, has a great wine selection and fresh produce. There's always great customer service and the bathrooms are immaculate. It also now has a Peet's counter and a postal center inside. Parking and leaving can get tricky as this place can get crowded (by Merced standards). Also, a side benefit that probably won't help you if you don't live in the area, is that you can get all your socializing done while roaming the aisles, because everyone you know shops here too! read more

Raley's is always clean, and very well stocked. It has a large selection of goods including natural/organic health food items. It even has a post office and a pharmacy. The employees are friendly and helpful. Both the bakery and deli are great, and have the plenty to choose from, including hot food entrées. Love to do my grocery shopping here when I am in town. It is clean and staffs are friendly. However today when I order at the hot food section the woman was not very nice. I order a picnic pack with fried chicken, bread, cookies and salad included. After I told her the order, she said leg and thighs? I took a 1 second to think about her question. She looked at me very irritated and said those are what comes with it! Then why the hell did she asked me then!!! While she is packing the chickens she asked potato salad or Macaroni salad? I took another second to think and she asked me again! I was asking my friend that was standing next to me what should we get? And of course thus woman couldn't freaking wait and asked AGAIN! I usually go to Raley's to find better quality meats and specialty food items. I would use the self check out for convenience and the simple luxury of not having to deal with people. I took my time scanning my 4 items at the self check out, charged my card, got my receipt and proceeded to exit. When, I was almost out the door, this balding, short, unattractive male worker stopped me to ask if he can look into my bag. I said, "sure", and opened my my bag to have him look in. He told me that I only scanned ONE pack of steaks. I told him that was correct, since I only bought ONE pack of steaks. There were two packs of meat in my bag, but the other tray of meat were PORKCHOPS. At this point, he was reviewing my receipt and I knew he was accusing me of lifting a pack of steaks. This got me very pissed off. I had to take my time at the self check out because I had to locate my cards in my purse. Certainly, there could have been a more defined way to make sure that I was scanning my items appropriately. I was sure this short, balding and very unattractive man wanted to form some type of negative confrontation with me. After realizing he made a HUGE error, he exclaimed: "Oh...HAVE A WONDERFUL DAY." What a complete and ugly idiot. I paid almost $50 for 4 items in my bag and he thought I stole something. I left Raley's feeling VERY disgusted and RACIALLY profiled. I will no longer be shopping there any more. I advise that people should shop elsewhere before they experience what I have. This worker definitely needs to be retrained in customer service and just plain logistics. I ONLY HAD 4 ITEMS! Clearly, he could have counted to FOUR and realized that I paid for everything with a simple glance of the receipt. This short, bald, unattractive man would never be able get a job at Costco, that's for sure! read more

This place now accepts UC Merced student discounts! The produce is always fresh, the sandwiches at the deli counter are amazing (and decently priced), and their bakery items are always super good (especially the fresh baked goods section). Yes, it's pricey, but that's high-end grocery stores for you. Also, this is literally the only grocery store in town that carries vegetable bouillon and seafood stock (yes, I checked). I only shop here when I have a recipe that requires specific ingredients that I can't get anywhere else. They also have a pharmacy, a post office and an atm, which is really convenient. While it's not my favorite grocery store ever, it is my favorite grocery store in Merced. I may be biased because my brother-in-law is a manager and my husband used to work there as well, but the bias aside, Raley's is a fantastic grocery store. The biggest complaint I hear about Raley's throughout conversations with people, is the price. However, I challenge those people to purchase their food at Save Mart and then go to Raley's and purchase the exact same items and compare prices. On the staple, everyday items, Raley's has the same prices as Save Mart. We will not even compare to Food 4 Less because they do not even rank in the same category of standards...ew. Raley's offers an organic section, which Save Mart does not. So if the prices are higher in this area, I understand. Raley's also offers their own store brand, which runs at a lower price than brand names. The quality of the store brand is good, nothing too far off from the brand name product. I have noticed that the baggers, and baggers in general I suppose, sure have changed from when I was younger. When I was younger, you used to see baggers getting their work done quickly and actually RUNNING to get a product for a customer who was waiting in line or checking out. Now, you're lucky if you see a bagger speed walking to get an item for you. read more

This is a great store. I am biased because I bagged there for 2 years when in college. But, the bias means nothing. The majority of the staff has been there for years. The manager probably earns low six figures and could sit in his office but pays attention to detail every day. The A-managers are service oriented and not aloof in any way. Very friendly staff, from the coffee counter (which serves Peet's awesomely), to the produce department, to - as I mentioned - the managerial staff. There is very little rotation, seeming proof that it is a good company to work for. But none of the staff seems aloof, and therefore rude. Even the checkers and stockers I did not work with make me feel comfortable, as if I am a friend. Just today I had bagging complaints. Chemicals with meat and produce. If you think this is evidence of a bad job, think this: I have worked there for 2 years, and shopped there for almost a decade since. It is ONLY today I saw poor judgement. From the bottom up, the people are trained. Friendly, hoping to help, able to find something in a split second. You pay more here if you don't shop the sale items. BUT you can find a sale item for almost anything you want: wine, toilet paper, carrots... so you do not have to. The staff is friendly, the product is good, and you feel happy walking the aisles. My mom and I were shopping and we were looking for an organic cantaloupe. We asked the produce guy if they were in season and if they had any and he simply said no. As we walked around the produce section we came across regular cantaloupe. To my surprise , none were ripened or good enough to buy. As we were leaving the produce section, I noticed more cantaloupes in a smaller section. To my surprise I found organic cantaloupe. How did the produce guy that worked there, not know they had organic cantaloupe? I was upset because he didn't even try to help us find any or ask someone else. The Raley's deli needs a few real Vegan items like some baked tofu, and some mapo tofu, hummus and some tiny breads to dip it with, and a few other Vegan choices, not just some lettuce and some heavily grease soaked vegetables. We're human beings, not rabbits and we didn't come in for a lube job on our car. Also, the addition of more tables in the deli area was a great idea, but the metal chair bars that attach to the backs are torture chambers and really hurt a lot. I tried to tell Raley's how places like Whole Foods have their deli food services set up, but they don't even know what Whole Foods is. The nearest Whole Foods or even a Lassens is way down south in Fresno and the nearest Sprouts is even farther south in Bakersfield. It's like living in a ghost town here in Merced. There are no Vegan cafes, and zero health food stores here. Tons of Starbucks, but zero Peet's Coffee unless of course you go to the Raley's bakery department and wait in line behind a grocery cart with a screaming kid while mom orders a birthday cake and a large box of cupcakes, not to mention her toilet paper, and other grocery store items. I have been using e cart and then delivery service for quite some time now. Got my order tonight and the substitutions they gave me were not anything equal to what I had ordered. They normally call me and ask me for my substitutions but today they didn't as they were running late and nobody contacted me until I got a text from that the driver saying they were in route 30 minutes late. So I get charged for 2 bags of grapes when I asked for one, got charged for four tofu only got 3, got frozen regular strawberries instead of organic strawberries, and corn tortillas that have gluten and I cannot have gluten. Raley's is expensive and they have really good deli meats. I literally just come here for the high scale roast beef. I was there on a Wednesday at 7PM it was CRAZY. They have this terrible number system, where you take a number and then they help you in order. I got there and it was on #15 and I was #28. They had 2 people working and it was crowded. Every single person before me wanted handmade sandwiches. I waited over 45 minutes to ask for my roast beef. WHY!? I literally came into this store for one thing. They should go and help the deli if there is only 1-3 people there as it's a quick 1-2 minute thing. Or maybe have 3 people working, 2 people on sandwiches and 1 on deli/sandwiches. Was at the deli today, and for the second time I was there a young man named Jared started making comments about me to his coworkers while I was standing there in earshot. Raley's contains a variety of grocery foods that you can't find at Target or Wal-Mart. I'll be in mood for mochi sometimes and I can't walk down the street to Wal-Mart for what I crave. One of my items was a gallon of milk as I was checking out I noticed that the gallon of milk was leaking so I told the cash register person in the self check out.
