3.5* This is a trendy spot on college avenue and has a really fun vibe for sure! Ramen is always such an irresistible dinner choice that I was actually really excited to eat here. The first time I ate here was pre pandemic and we sat inside. They have a great interior space and used to have a very charming bar space connected to the restaurant space. I came back recently and we sat outside. They have picnic tables outside with heaters making it a fun dining experience, casual and relaxed. We tried the Tempura and Dumplings as appetisers and both dishes were great, packed with flavour and delicious with drinks 10/10. For drinks I got a 2019 red wine recommended by the host and it was delicious 10/10. For the main I got the Spicy Tantanmen ($22.50) and the one thing that stood out for me was the egg. It was a soft boiled egg but one of the tastiest I have every had, must try! The noodles had good texture and the broth itself was ok ok. It was hard for me to differentiate flavors in the bowl making me feel the ramen was overpriced for what I was eating. Great vibes at the Ramen Shop. Wouldn't call this a specialized ramen place, but it is definitely an awesome place to get food and cocktails or even go on a date. This place is INSANELY expensive for just okay food. We went last night and spent 230 dollars for ramen for 4 people. I'm sorry but that's insane. My friend and I came here on a Saturday early evening after hiking. We were able to find some street parking nearby and were seated right away. The ambiance was nice for the most part. We ordered an appetizer which was sliced deep fried eggplant topped with some pomegranate sauce and an order of the beef shoyu ramen. The appetizer was extremely delicious! It was unique and flavorful. The ramen however was really disappointing. It didn't taste especially bad but it wasn't anything special. Given it's price ($16), I expected something more unique. The broth was just okay and they didn't really add a generous amount of ingredients (ex: meat) to it. I do think the portions are more than enough to call it a meal but I wasn't really satisfied. My dad got the vegetable ramen and the rest of us got the duck shoyu ramen. I tried some of the Filipino Breakfast and it was kind of salty. My duck shoyu ramen was just okay. The noodles were cooked well, but the broth tasted like standard shoyu broth. For $20.50, I didn't think the duck shoyu ramen was worth that price. Pricey (bowls start at $20+) for basic ramen. Their appetizers and drink selection were more impressive than the soup for me. Tried this place out because Ramen Kitchen on Solano (Berkeley) went out of business and now I am desperately searching for a good ramen joint to get me through the winter! The chicken and seafood dumplings were well made- great homemade texture and the seafood/chicken flavors were balanced- I just wish there were more than 3 dumplings for $9. I was actually blown away by how delicious my drink (the Cure) was made! It's served in what looks like a beer glass, but is a hot blend of spicy ginger, lemongrass, turmeric, chamomile and cinnamon (see photos). Great sipper if you like a strong ginger kick! And lastly, the ramen. Looked beautiful-gorgeous presentation and soup bowls (loved the creative use of shaved radish en lieu of pork for the veggie ramen!)- but was just OK in terms of flavor and texture. I ordered the tonkutsu pork belly ramen. It wasn't exactly what I expected. The broth is probably richer and thicker than what I have had before in other restaurants but I really like it. (I spoke to the chef - the base is pork broth with shoyo, dried fish, and a dash of sake). Spicy greens and small cherry tomatoes were never my first guesses in terms of accompaniments but they work really well with the ramen. We belly up to first available table which is at the Ramen bar itself. In uncomfortable Bizerkely elementary issue stools, we settled in for what would be an epic meal! So, the 3.5 star rating is SPOT ON. Not quite four, but deservingly a little higher than 3 stars. The place is sexy and is a spot that local 'industry' people love and if you're looking for where the beautiful hipsters eat ramen, it's here. They have a legit cocktail bar next to their ramen house and it's dark and woody. Ambiance is so key here and their cocktails are so good, so kudos! And I actually don't mind the prices as much. Yes, they are more than comparative other ramen spots, but I get it. However, the ramen was good, but I wouldn't say great. We also opted for the pork and seafood dumplings which was 3 for $9, and they were fine, but again, overpriced as the dumplings were fairly skimpy. The meyer lemon was unique and a bit lighter, but didn't find the broth too robust and the noodles were buckwheatesque. At $19.50 it is pricey and could have used a little more veggies to add some substance. As mentioned in many reviews, the bowl is beautiful, but small, meaning not a ton of noodles, broth or accoutrements. The food is good, and a nice night out with friends and a perfect place to catch up. There typically tends to be a wait, but food comes out quick. It's not cheap, and although I trust they are using the best ingredients, for some that value may not be there. High key this was the best duck confit of my life. I felt silly not getting ramen but they made me a HOT cocktail and I haven't had duck in so long? Highly recommend! My friend got the veggie ramen and that jawn looked like it came straight out a Miyazaki film. I can't wait to go back. Service was great. The service from Jackie was kind and very helpful. I had the Tantanmen, which is hard to find. The piping bowl was filled with ground pork belly, a shoyu-marinated egg, fried baby artichoke, flowering baby bok choy, King Richard leeks, fiddlehead ferns, cilantro, and shungiku. My partner and I stopped here for lunch. They offered 3 types of ramen for lunch: Duck shoyo, vegetable, and butter miso ramen. The duck ramen was a duck broth, with no duck meat. They also don't have gyoza. I ordered the duck ramen and my partner the butter ramen. The duck ramen had no duck flavor in it. I was very disappointed in this ramen. The broth was a shoyu broth and just lacked flavor. The entire ramen just lacked taste. The noodles texture was good though. My partners butter ramen tasted much better. The broth was flavorful and it was full of corn and ground pork. I wish I ordered this one than the duck ramen. RAMEN VS. PHO I enjoy soup, but I'm not a soup aficionado. In the past when I was craving for soup I would go to Vietnamese eateries for a bowl of pho. I like the broth with the noodles and meat incorporating in it. The one thing I never understood is when I see people putting sriracha and hoisin sauces as they thicken the broth. There is something missing about pho that I couldn't grasp until I found out why people put sriracha and hoisin in pho. About three Saturdays ago I ate at the Ramen Shop after the football game between UC Davis and Cal. I didn't order a fancy vegetable ramen as I wanted meat in my ramen so I ordered the Stemple Creek Ranch Beef Shoyu Ramen, which had smoked brisket and braised oxtail. Unlike pho I didn't put any additional sauces. What I came away was I liked ramen more than pho. This ramen soup I ordered had a salty, miso texture. Salt is the difference between ramen and pho. Thomas Keller said, "Salt enhances the flavor of the food you are cooking." A lightbulb had turned on for me for my appreciating of ramen. I am not saying I don't enjoy eating pho but I enjoy soup the most when there is salt. As the broth in pho isn't as flavorful I see why people put sriracha and hoisin sauces. Since the smoked brisket and braised oxtail have salt they flavored the broth in the ramen without thickening it. The price for ramen at the Ramen Shop isn't cheap, but I'm glad I came here to eat reveal my preferences of ramen over pho. read more

I read some reviews and wonder if it's the same place. I can't relate to anyone who dislikes the Ramen Shop in Oakland. My daughter and I go here when we want to celebrate. We were there on Saturday and had a great time. The Ramen is very tasty and the fried rice which is an appetizer could be the main meal. If I lived in the area it would be worth a trip for a beer and the fried rice. The drinks are good too. Sure, it's expensive it's worth it. The longest wait we have encountered was 20 minutes and we had a drink in the bar area. If you don't have patience for waiting they do open fairly early for dinner 5pm and 4pm on weekends. Ok, I see everyone's 4+ star review of this place, but I believe there's traditional ramen catered towards Asians, and non traditional ramen catered towards...everyone else. For starters, the fried rice was pretty good - sweet, sour and spicy, it had a good kick of flavor with a good amount of substance. We ordered the small and it came out surprisingly larger than we expected. I wish I could say good things about my ramen though. The only word I can come up with tonight was saltyyyyy. The broth - salty. The noodles - salty (probably from the broth). The minced pork and egg - salty (again, probably from the broth). I'm salty even for writing this review since I had higher hopes for this place. I only ate about half my ramen before taking the rest to go so I could dilute it at home. I give them props for new age ingredients and experimenting, but I can't give it to them for execution. Def not the bowl of ramen I wanted. Only saving grace for the night - their bar. One of the few ramen shops that I know of that has a full bar and their drinks menu looked pretty bomb. It's been years since I've been back to Ramen Shop. The first time, my friend and I put our name on the list and drove elsewhere to eat. When we returned 1.5 hours later, they still haven't called us. After we were seated, we both ordered the vegetarian ramen since we wanted something lighter after having meat at the other restaurant we pre-ate at. I remember liking the vegetarian broth that time although the flavors didn't taste like what you'd expect from Japanese ramen. This time, I put my name on the list before meeting friends nearby for drinks. When I returned I was quickly seated at the counter, and given a menu. I didn't realize their ramen costs $20 now! I decided to try the tsukemen, which is a dipping ramen, that the bartender said they only offer on Mondays. Their noodles and eggs are served chilled, which is typical of tsukemen. The broth is piping hot, but I really didn't like the nettle flavor in the tsukemen. I asked for the soupwari early hoping I can dilute the nettle flavor, but it didn't help. Given where this place is now it's incredible to me that it was once one of my favorite haunts. I came at least twice a month. Now out of the three Ramen options two are usually pork, out of the three donburi options two are pork. The remaining options are veggie, and don't have balanced savory flavors. It was "interesting" because the rice and a couple other things in the dish were warm, but the tuna was cold. Although it was half warm-half cold, I was still happy with the choice. I somehow expected more soup options since the restaurant IS called Ramen Shop. My friend ordered the Yuzo Duck Ramen and loved it. I got the veggie ramen and was quite pleased.
