Update: Full menu is finally live and I cannot wait to try all the new additions + add uni on everything! ---- Finally a good Japanese restaurant in downtown Oakland, and my new neighborhood favorite. Izakaya Shodai quietly had their soft opening the last few weeks and I've already been there 3x. The soft opening menu is still a fraction of what the full will be so I cannot wait as everything I've eaten has been amazing. Some favorites are the mentaiko udon, where you can add uni, the beef tongue skewers, chicken wings, and hamachi ceviche. Everything is made with quality ingredients and assembled with precision. Definitely going to become a regular!

The clam risotto was definitely the stand out star from everything we ordered, along with their skewers which I forgot to take pictures of. I loved the Smokey flavor from the skewers and they were well seasoned! Parking in the area wasn't bad and the servers were very attentive. Super excited about a new izakaya restaurant opening in the area!

A new spot opened in Oakland and I wanted to stop by for date night. Love the vibes of the interior it definitely looked like a spot you can go for a date or hang out with friends. Everything is like tapas style, but we still got full. I asked the chef and bartender for recs and they didn't disappoint. I loved their drink that was recommended. My favorite standout dish was clam risotto, uni pasta, and the croquette. The staff are super friendly and helpful. Made the dining experience memorable. We parked on the street and it was in a safe area. Would come back again

Service: 5/5 they were really attentive and nice. Even gave us some freebies for the wait (which was not too long). Food: - Clam Risotto: 5/5 really good and tasty. A must try. - Scallop Skewer: 4/5 really tasty, but really small. - Pork belly skewer: 3/5 nothing too special - Nigiri Moriwasae: 3/5 fish was fresh, but definitely could use some more flavor. - Moriwasae Donburi: 3/5 same rating for the fish above, but the rice could use more flavor (perhaps some rice vinegar). - Red Dragon Roll: 4/5 great flavor and the eel was cooked well. Ambience: 5/5 great decor and inviting. Perhaps adding some bag hooks to the tables would be cool!

What a great addition to downtown Oakland. Great actual ikazaya but also good fusion dishes, unlike Good Luck Gato, which I thought sucked. We got the yamayimo noodle salad, hamachi ceviche, cajun alberco tataki, sashimi platter, hamachii maki, and clam risotto. Sushi quality was great, would go bad just for that. Luckily got some amazing uni on our sushi platter. Fish quality lends into how good all the appetizers were. The cajun was a great surprise, as I'm usually not a fan of fusion type dishes but it was done extremely well. Similarly the clam risotto was a recommendation, and it didn't disappoint. We only got one skewers but also great. They are charcoal grilled and will need to try more next time. This is all on top of great service and a chill space. All in all, we'll be back!

Best things we had: salmon maki and the crab risotto. The orange house made sorbet was also very good. Scallop with ume was okay - 3pcs only, the sashimi was fresh also. No gluten free soy sauce so I recommend they stock that soon. Black cod appetitzer was cold and it failed to wow - might be better warm. The mountain yam noodles were good but also tiny in size/portion. The two main disappointments of the meal were the pork belly skewers (hard and chewy) and the French fries with curry. They did give us a bowl of rice to eat with the curry which was really nice and appreciated, but the actual fries were clearly frozen crinkle cut fries. Good sake selection but only a house red or white wine -recommend they stock a few more options for people who prefer wine. Service was very nice and friendly/attentive without being annoying. The vibe inside is good for dates and friend meet ups. There was a family with two young kids tonight so it's good for families also.

The worst pork belly I've ever had

This might be because the restaurant is new but the black chicken wings that were undercooked scared me deeply.

We tried the enoki chips, kurozu karaage and unagi roll. I really like the karaage, especially its's paired with eggplant and shishito peppers. I got the A5 Wagyu ramen and my bf got the signature Toripaitan(with extra duck chashu on the side). They are pretty good given I'm not a super ramen person. My soup base tastes very smokey in a good way. I tried my bf's, it's a rich creamy soup base. It was good but might be too heavy for my liking. Overall, I can see the hype and definitely want to come back to try other new dishes!

The appetizers were all phenomenal. The wagyu nigiri came not seared, but gently warmed so the bite was very buttery and rich. The tartare came in a monaka and was very flavorful. I wasn't sure if you are supposed to eat the third wafer, but it was a bit stale. The house special ramen came with wagyu, duck, and pork chashu in creamy tori paitain broth. It was a very decadent dish, although I have had better paitan broth elsewhere. The premium smoked toppings though were incredibly tender and I loved the contrast of the crispy enokis and oyster mushroom memma. The hostess was super friendly and we got seated immediately. But, a line started building up as we left so plan accordingly. I would 100% come back to try all the appetizers!

It was conveniently located across the street from the venue, and the unassuming outside of the restaurant did not hint at the amount of fun, ambiance, good food, and warm hospitality contained inside. First, there is the name. Not sure if it's some sort of play on words, secret joke, or if it's someone's actual name, but it works, kinda. It's kinda a restaurant, kinda a bar, kinda of a hangout, and kinda fun. The tiny entrance and plain facade reveals a bustling world of delicious food, tasty beverage, and lots of decorative eye candy to keep you looking around the space while you are hanging out with friends, on a date, or just relaxing after a long day. The decorations there are very upbeat, eclectic, fun, and distinctly Japanese pop culture. Posters, banners, flags, lanterns, toys, and trinkets can be found all over the restaurant, and made it fun to keep looking around and discover new novel things to look at. I did feel like I was in an authentic Izakaya somewhere in Shinjuku, Shibuya, or Ebisu in Tokyo. The place had a lot of personality & personal flair in an otherwise, tiny & industrial small warehouse type space. Service was excellent. The host was the cute & personable Mina, who couldn't have been more accommodating, patient, friendly, and engaging. It was very busy, and even though it was our first time there, Mina made us feel welcome into their home and was also very helpful to guide us around their experience. The other staff were less engaging, but still professional, efficient, and polite. Service was quick, attentive, and friendly on all accounts, and they as a team, managed to serve an entire full house of hungry & happy patrons during the entire Saturday night dinner rush. Fun place with a good staff. We opted for Izakaya-type, shared small plates to satisfy our hunger cravings without getting too full and weighed down on big portions of heavy, rich foods. Everything on the long & expansive menu looked great, but we mostly stuck with small appetizers to sample & savor. It was nice that there were plenty of lighter, fresh vegetarian options as neither of us were really in the mood for seafood, fried food, or big heavy entrees. We ordered the Kinda Tofu, Kyuri sliced fresh cucumber salad, and Kinoko butter-grilled mushroom hot platter and washed it down with some green grape Jinro soju. Everything was pretty good! Not overly fried, greasy, salty, or seasoned. Lightly cooked, delicately glazed, with just enough seasoning & oil/sauce to make it taste good, but not end up too complicated or messy. The taste really came through using these minimal cooking & seasoning techniques. The taste of the original vegetables & tofu came through perfectly, and were only complimented by their light hints of adding flavor. Portion sizes were ample for two people, and presentation was appetizing and organized. The bill for 3 apps + 1 bottle of Soju was less than $50, so it was a good value for the fun experience & good food. Wait times during the dinner rush are long, and there isn't really anywhere to sit or stand, so reservations are recommended. You can also enter and go straight to the 10-seat bar if there are openings, but we got a table for two after around a 20-30 minute wait. After that, everything moves pretty quickly, from ordering, getting food & drinks, to wrapping up and getting your check. Perfect system if you're trying to get to a concert, movie, or appointment with a specific start time. I really liked this place, not Kinda, not Sorta, but Definitely, or Absolutely! Kinda Izakaya will always be our destination to eat & hang out next time we come back to Berkeley, it is a true gem of a Japanese Izakaya/light meal fare right in the heart of downtown Berkeley. It's fun, tasty, busy, and friendly. Small & cozy, yet also airy & comfortable.

I had to look it up, and once I realized it was basically the chicken equivalent of rich, fatty oxtail-style meat, I knew I had to try it. Holy hell, it was easily the best chicken skewer I've ever had. I would honestly come back just to order multiple of these. The squid ink rice was incredibly savory and filling, and paired with a few beers, this made for such a great evening out. All in all, Ippuku is a must-visit in Berkeley if you're into izakayas.

It was good, but it felt like it was missing something to really make it pop. I really appreciated the variety on the menu, especially the starters and curries. There are so many options that I'd definitely come back to try something different next time. If you're vegan, this is actually a great spot. They have three vegan ramen options, which felt special since most places only offer one. My partner ordered the spicy vegan ramen and thought it was terrific, though we both agreed the broth wasn't as rich as we're used to. I ordered the Tonkotsu ramen, but unfortunately, it didn't quite hit the mark for me. The broth felt a bit underwhelming, and the pork flavor came across stronger than I expected. That said, I'd definitely come back, especially because of the thoughtful vegan options. Next time, I'll probably try the Chashu Bowl, which looked really good when it came out at another table. The space isn't very big, so it's probably not ideal for groups larger than 4-6, but it would be great for a casual date night or cozy lunch.
