If you like Burma Superstar, you've GOT to try Burma Bites. I'm serious. I didn't go here for almost a year tbh, because I couldn't get away from Burma Superstar. Burma Bites is the fusion type of food you aren't scared to try things from. They have a platha quesadilla (I'll update my review when i find out the name)! They change their menu so check out the menu before you go if you really care. No joke I didn't take pictures because I ate it super fast. I ordered the Chicken Curry Bowl with coconut rice and it comes with steamed broccoli (that isn't steamed to death). I also ordered the platha and dip and it was 10/10. The platha was light and fresh. It's like a buttery tortilla if you aren't familiar, IMO. I will be back to try more stuff!

Burma Bites is such a sweet addition to the Temescal area in Oakland. I'm a huge fan of Burma Superstar and Burmese food, but now with baby in tow, I just don't have the time like I used to for sit-down meals that aren't pre-planned :) Burma Bites hits all the marks for the grab & go diner, or just one that may need outdoor seating with a stroller and eco-friendly to-go boxes just in case it's literally "go" time, ha. I love the Burma Bites vibe ~ Burmese street food mixed with the classics from Burma Superstar. And I hear there's a secret menu? Staff is super friendly and helpful, even though I couldn't stray too far from what I love and miss..the tea leaf salad. My husband was a bit more adventurous and ordered something unique and fun called the "Burmarito" which is Burmese curry braised beef brisket (cooked in a banana leaf) with Coconut Tea Leaf Rice, and a super yummy salsa/side dipping sauce wrapped in a tortilla. We also ordered a coconut curry chicken bowl with coconut rice to-go for later. No disappointments, everything hit the mark. There was a special going on if for mini samusas if you spent a specific amount ~ a super fun surprise to add to our spread. All in all, Burma Bites is perfect for those crunched on time but still want a quick meal that meets value with authenticity & flavor. I have my eye on a few other menu offerings like the Burmese Fried Chicken Sandwich and the Quesaplatha (similar to a quesadilla but using roti platha). Yum! Next time.

    Cute outdoor area too

I got the mango chicken rice bowl and it's a very clean delicious balanced healthy meal. Simple. I will be coming back to try all the other rice bowls. Service was so quick and they were kind. Also they have a lovely outdoor area.

    Quesaplatha Birria with consomme

Burma Bites is worth a try! I ordered the Quesaplatha Birria and Mini Potato Samusas! Highly recommended the Quesaplatha Birria! It's Griddled Indian flatbread with Oaxacan cheese and curried barbacoa. Served with burmese beef curry consomme. Loved the consomme! The Mini Potato Samusas was very good! Flaky indian pastry filled with peas and spiced potato, and served with a Cucumber Mint Raita. The cashier was very helpful, I believe his name was Fernando. Shout out to the cooks as well!

Ordered via Doordash and everyone that ate it got food poisoning. Think it may have been the Tea Leaf Salad, but it was definitely a bummer.

Things changed: more breading on the chicken (spicy crispy chicken) and reduced protein in some of the other dishes, too. But the flavors still hit and its popularity hasn't dimmed much on the nights I've gone over the last few years. I bought their cookbook years back but much of what I like isn't in it, so I keep coming back for the food and community vibes. There is a communal table, which I appreciate though I tend to sit at the bar when I go alone. It's worth it to get a view of what's happening all around you. The B S in Alameda doesn't have the same energy or coziness, but it is easier to access with safer parking (now windows broken there but I've had that here and been hassled walking to/from) and dramatically shorter waits. The diversity of the diners is much lower than this one though (Alameda is still mostly old white people) and the menu has more options here, so I'll continue to return again and again and recommend it to others ... and hope to not have to replace car windows.

The Roti Dip was OUT OF THIS WORLD (6/5). It exceeded my expectations. The Roti was very soft and crispy and the dip had an amazing coconut/herby taste. The waiter saw how much we loved the dip and brought us another one to use for our rice. Big shout out to her! The chicken wings were okay. Not that spicy for me (I have a high spice tolerance) but I expected them to be more savory. They were cooked very well though. I would give it a 3/5 Unfortunately, I was pretty disappointed with my main which was the crispy whole dried fish. I am a sucker for whole fish dishes so I was pretty excited and expectant for something spectacular. The fish itself was bland. It was very crispy and cooked well but not really seasoned. I had thought the sauce they serve with it was intended to impart flavor on the fish, but the sauce was just very tangy and not flavorful. I did finish the fish though but it's not something I would get again. Overall a 2.5/5. Their coconut rice was good though I was expecting more of a coconut flavor with it. I would rate that a 4/5. It was cooked very well. I think this is a really nice place though, perhaps I just did not order the right or more popular dishes. I'll be coming back for the ROTI WITH DIP (It was that good) and to try the other items in their menu.

Between the four of us, we shared a variety of dishes, including their Champa Wings, Nam Kaow, Lao Sausages, Yum Nom Tok, Champa's Fried Rice and Pad Thai. Of these dishes, my favorite was easily the Nam Kaow. This dish had so many layers of flavors and textures. I could honestly eat a whole plate of this myself and be satisfied. Every grain of crispy rice was fried to perfection and there was a wonderful sour and spicy tang throughout each bite. The other dish I really enjoyed was the Lao sausages. These sausages are packed with so many different herbs and spices. The lemongrass flavor was especially prominent. Like the Nam Kaow, this dish also went really well with the fresh mint and lettuce that's provided on the table. There's a good reason why this unassuming Thai and Lao neighborhood restaurant has a line out the door: the food is absolutely delicious. Years ago, I was turned off by this place's policies during the cooties insanity. I won't go into that in this review except to say that this was unfortunately one of many businesses that was duped at that time into adopting very misguided policies by the powers that shouldn't be, and now that it's common knowledge just how erroneous those policies were, I hope those mistakes will not be repeated in the future. Nevertheless, when the hysteria finally subsided, I decided to give this place another shot. The restaurant is attractive and very colorful throughout. There is an outdoor patio reminiscent of a tiki place, and the interior is very nice as well. Thumping, upbeat, clubby music, which I love! Other places, please take note: more unce-unce like this, less downer pop. The menu is a little on the pricey side. Happy to see there are vegetarian and vegan options. On our last visit we went with the fresh vegan rolls - very good - and a vegetarian pad Thai. They accommodated our request for no egg and no tofu in the pad Thai, just veggies. Service was fine, could have been a bit friendlier. Will probably return again, I enjoyed the plant-based options and the upbeat music.
