I am deeply saddened to put a 1-star but for the benefit of all possible customers, I wanted to warn you of this shop before you come so you know what you're getting yourself into. I waited 40 min for my tea leaf salad. There was no one in front of me to order so I thought it would be fast but turns out a lot of ppl were just hanging around but most importantly, they don't have a good kitchen system. Since it's an open kitchen, you can see how they operate and communicate. There isn't really a system for how the staff cooks and you often hear them say "we need one more ___ order". If you like Burma Superstar, you've GOT to try Burma Bites. I'm serious. I didn't go here for almost a year tbh, because I couldn't get away from Burma Superstar. Burma Bites is the fusion type of food you aren't scared to try things from. They have a platha quesadilla (I'll update my review when i find out the name)! They change their menu so check out the menu before you go if you really care. No joke I didn't take pictures because I ate it super fast. I ordered the Chicken Curry Bowl with coconut rice and it comes with steamed broccoli (that isn't steamed to death). I also ordered the platha and dip and it was 10/10. The platha was light and fresh. It's like a buttery tortilla if you aren't familiar, IMO. I will be back to try more stuff! read more

Burma Bites is such a sweet addition to the Temescal area in Oakland. I'm a huge fan of Burma Superstar and Burmese food, but now with baby in tow, I just don't have the time like I used to for sit-down meals that aren't pre-planned :) Burma Bites hits all the marks for the grab & go diner, or just one that may need outdoor seating with a stroller and eco-friendly to-go boxes just in case it's literally "go" time, ha. I love the Burma Bites vibe ~ Burmese street food mixed with the classics from Burma Superstar. And I hear there's a secret menu? Staff is super friendly and helpful, even though I couldn't stray too far from what I love and miss..the tea leaf salad. My husband was a bit more adventurous and ordered something unique and fun called the "Burmarito" which is Burmese curry braised beef brisket (cooked in a banana leaf) with Coconut Tea Leaf Rice, and a super yummy salsa/side dipping sauce wrapped in a tortilla. We also ordered a coconut curry chicken bowl with coconut rice to-go for later. No disappointments, everything hit the mark. There was a special going on if for mini samusas if you spent a specific amount ~ a super fun surprise to add to our spread. All in all, Burma Bites is perfect for those crunched on time but still want a quick meal that meets value with authenticity & flavor. It's only a takeout place. Since Burma superstar was delicious. We ordered items from here thinking of the same quality. We had Samosa, which was too oily but tasted good. Then we ordered spicy tofu which was terrible and then we ordered some chicken sandwich. It was disgusting. I still give a three star because probably we ordered the wrong items here. Was so excited to see Burma Bites as a quick takeout option. I love Burmese Food and Burma Superstar. But man, was I disappointed! And so was hubby. I ended up throwing away most of my food. We got the Burmese Fried Chicken Sando, Salt & Pepper Garlic Fries, Regular Fries, Popcorn Chicken, and Coconut Rice (always gotta have me some). Hubby said the chicken sandwich could have been good, but it was really soggy. Granted, I live about 20 minutes away, so by the time i got home, the slaw had soaked through the bun. Perhaps this takeout/delivery place should take into consideration travel time, and put the slaw on the side. Next to the fries--very limp. Even if there was no travel time, they weren't cooked very crisply. The Salt & Pepper fries were nothing like the description online. They were supposed to be: "French fries tossed with fried garlic and our Burmese chili crunch.." There may have been a little garlic, but not much. There was NO Burmese chili crunch (which was the whole reason I ordered these). There were a few slivers of jalapeno. Sooooo disappointing! The popcorn chicken was flavorless, soggy, and in large pieces (popcorn indicates to me small bitesize pieces). The soggy could probably have been rectified by venting the takeout container. Only redeeming item was the coconut rice which I love, and it was yummy. Perhaps we just got the wrong items. Perhaps we live too far away to be getting takeout from here. It's Griddled Indian flatbread with Oaxacan cheese and curried barbacoa. Served with burmese beef curry consomme. Loved the consomme! The Mini Potato Samusas was very good! Flaky indian pastry filled with peas and spiced potato, and served with a Cucumber Mint Raita. The cashier was very helpful, I believe his name was Fernando. My friend and I came here to celebrate her birthday and we didn't realize it was outdoor dining and take out only and it was a cold rainy day but luckily their outdoor dining was covered so we didn't get wet. We ordered the mango lassi, vegetable semusas, eggplant and tea leaf salad to share. All were tasty and delicious. Parking wasn't a problem and I was lucky to get a space near the post office. If I come here again, it will be on a warm day! Love Burma Superstar, but at this burma the quality wasn't the same at all. The dishes were not cooked with attention or care for the diner's experience. My son ordered a meal one evening when I was tired after a long day. The eggplant dish with chicken was very uneven, couldn't eat half of it. The eggplant tasted great, cooked perfectly , the best part of the bowl The sauce was too sweet and one note- tasted like a bottled sauce was poured on it, soy/teriyaki flavored. The chicken was in shreds that were dry and hard. The pieces of broccoli were huge, should have been bite sized, not big enough to feed livestock. The broccoli also had no flavor, the most egregious error. The pork burrito was okay, pork was cooked well, good quality meat I appreciated that it was nice and tender, but It could have had a bit more flavor and a few veggies would have been great , as most burritos do. The surrounding area is a very fun place to walk around and Burma is right next to North Star; they have a joint patio area right outside which makes it perfect for casual dining. ** The following review reflects my delivery experience DURING the COVID-19 pandemic. ** Fifteen years back, Burmese food was more of a dining novelty, and as a virgin to the cuisine, I had my first tea leaf salad at the original Burma Superstar on Clement in the Richmond. I was a witness to the table side preparation which required a great deal of practiced dexterity with utensils by the server. I assumed if a server couldn't graduate in Tea Leaf Salad 101, then they were back to House of Noodles. I was hooked back then and now Burma Superstar has spawned a number of similar spots including their own progeny. In fact, they're so popular that the progeny, the Oakland location of Burma Superstar, has spawned their own progeny dedicated to takeout and delivery just a couple of blocks north on Telegraph. I found it on DoorDash, of course, and was thrilled I could get both the Tea Leaf and Rainbow Salads for Jamie W. and myself for dinner. The $15 Tea Leaf Salad is a classic. They vastly changed the menu, which isn't a problem itself, I assume they were cannibalizing business from Burma Superstar, but the new food is awful. I ordered the shrimp kebat with coconut rice, the shrimp taste burnt and if it weren't for the one forkful of rice I got with the slightest hint of coconut, I swore they sent plain rice - how do you mess of the damn coconut rice? They don't have the chicken coconut curry for the paratha and you can no longer get the tea leaf salad. I have always been a long time Burma superstar customer. Of course I had to then check out this fast delivery alternative. What a great idea with covid limiting dining. They have some eco friendly takeout boxes so I was happy to try it out. When you go it literally is just a walk up to the store.The people at the takeout counter were very friendly and helpful. The tea leaf salad even for takeout did not disappoint! Sometimes I'm wary of takeout quality. The mango chicken and spicy shrimp had good flavoring. I was hoping for the chicken curry soup but they had the Nan Gyi Dok. This is a great dish but the takeout didn't turn out as good. I'm not sure if there was enough sauce. The noodles were stuck together and didn't have enough curry sauce. Next time I'd ask to drizzle more. read more

I love me some Burma Superstar so it almost goes without saying that I love me some Burma Bites! I do wish that their prices were more reasonable than Burma given they only offer takeout and delivery and not all the items on the menu. I have gone to their brick and mortar location and have been disappointed with their long wait times for food even in moments where they don't seem busy or have one or no people in front of me. Be prepared for 15-25 min wait times which defeats the point of "take out" for me. I mainly order from Burma Bites on DoorDash at least once a month and their variety caters to all the eclectic family tastes I have. My favorites are their rainbow salad, coconut rice, garlic noodles. If you are wanting to try Burmese food, I would recommend Burma Superstar instead and you get more variety and more bang for your buck so to speak. read more

I've been going to Burma Bites since they opened and have witnessed their evolution over the past few years. This review is not about their food (which is usually quite good), but about the changes, mostly in portion size and cost. Originally you could order a nice dish that came with chicken or beef (+$2), rice and string beans for around $18 with generous portions sizes. I was in heaven living down the street and eating there at least once a week and could usually get 2 meals out of one order. Then they raised the prices; fair enough as it was a super deal to begin with. Then they made it a "bowl" with much smaller portions of protein and rice, no string beans, but an OK little side salad in a small carton (which was usually only about 1/2 full). Then they removed the side salad and started charging $1 for it. Then they charged $1.50 for the side salad. Then they started charging $1 order processing fee for online orders. (They should be giving a credit of $1 for online orders as calling in an order uses up valuable employee time.) Now no beef dishes. Almost all of these changes happened far before inflation became so high and seems to be their business model; increasing charges while decreasing portion size and expenses. FYI the A La Carte order of Wok-Tossed Chili Chicken was a total $28.54 (no rice - 10% tip). This is just too expensive for what it is. There are too many great restaurants in this area. and unfortunately this is probably my final trip to BB where every visit I'm again disappointed. read more

This restaurant was busy on a Monday night. I placed an order for 6 dishes thru Ubereats and it was ready within 20mins. Very reasonable. Dishes had great flavor and I would reorder them again. It fed 4 adults and we had left overs. Some of the dishes despite sound spicy, you can opt for mild and that's what we got. I was surprised to find walnut shrimp on the menu since it's found in Chinese restaurants and that was good. The spicy noodles is very similar to pad thai minus the tofu. The chili lamb was not gamey at all. Each entree came with a side of rice. I liked the addition of the fried shallots on the coconut rice but one of them was missing it. read more

It's a take-out to-go spot only with no seating available, even though right in front is a parklet with tables and chairs that look like they belong to Burma bites. Apparently this misunderstanding happens often. There is also no bathroom available. On Yelp, it looks like Burma superstar is located here, but Burma Superstar, with the full menu and large outdoor seating, is down the street a little. This is important to know when planning to dine out during COVID times. The listings here on Yelp are very misleading. I love when a tea leaf salad has the flavors of garlic, fish sauce, and dried shrimp coming through & this was a miss. I remember the salad at both the Oakland and Alameda Burma Superstars being a lot more flavorful. My partner got the chicken with fresh basil and a side of jasmine rice. I don't eat chicken so I didn't try it myself. He also wasn't impressed with his dish though. This place is absolutely not the best of Burma Superstar. And for what you're getting, it's pretty overpriced. Our meal with drinks came out to around $50. It may take longer but just go to the sit down restaurant. read more
