What a great and friendly staff you have at this location! I came in today for a cookie and a coffee, and I was treated so nicely that I had to post about it. I come in to the McKinleyville location occasionally and am always greeted with a smile and my order is always deliver promptly and courteously. Kudos to the staff! I just wanted a 12 oz cup of coffee (not a latte or cappuccino or anything fancy). But I wanted some warm soy milk on top, maybe about 3 oz. MUCH less than what goes into a latte. Well! The cost was $4.60! For a cup of coffee with a bit of soy milk. Their upcharge for non dairy milk was $1.00 and this was the same whether you got 8 oz. of soy milk or 3 oz. Ridiculous. Located inside the Wildberries Market grocery store, this bakery counter is often a complete zoo waiting for help, service, acknowledgment that you would like to purchase something, etc. I usually only stop here out of sheer necessity, as it is often overrun by college kids. As was the case at my most recent visit. You can definitely tell when school sessions are in and not. Three people behind the counter, with two working on the same coffee pot? and the other young girl running around like crazy trying to wait on as many as she could. After about 5-7 minutes, I finally make eye contact with the one running around (both of the other two looked over but neither bothered to ask if anyone (8- 10 people standing around the service counter waiting) could be helped, or a we will be right with you. Customer service has become a thing of the past here. Finally got the couple baked goods I came in for, which was not that big of a deal but then my box of baked goods get put to the back of the line of things waiting to be checked out (most of which came in behind me?) - every time I go in to this Ramones, I tell myself never again.... Arcata is lucky to have a bakery with the quality of Ramone's. They make extremely good cakes and tortes that you just can't find anywhere else (SF, NYC, etc.). The Basque cake is truly amazing. We buy a cake from Ramone's whenever we pass through Arcata and it is a highlight of our trip!! read more

Yay, Ramones seating area is now open! It's even open at 6:00 am for us early risers. One downside is, the restroom remains locked until 8:00 am so if you have a small bladder take note. There is however a house across the street with some good bushes to pee in lol read more

This little espresso bar is inside Wild Berries Market. The business is separate - so you can't pay for your latte at the regular cash registers or merchandise at the espresso bar/cafe register. Despite a lack of vegan pastries, I was very pleased with my experience at Ramone's Bakery & Cafe. Excellent service with friendly smiles and great espresso drinks. Located inside Wildberries- ugh no mas! The espresso shortbread cookie was tasty until I got to the center and it was under baked and tasted terribly like plain flour. That ruined the entire over priced cookie. Then the eclair- very very bad- stale AF. The choux was tough & chewy, not light and airy like a good choux should be. I didn't really want the over chocolated cream filling but got it thinking it'd be a new treat...nope. Maybe if the pastry itself was fresh the filling would have been good along side but no- it was another over priced mess. Very disappointing Ramone's....need an infusion of new pastry chefs, this ones got the market kinda cornered and is failing us in some aspects. Or maybe they could step up a few notches. read more

I moved here a few months ago, and I come here several times a week. Definitely has a small bakery vibe. Their croissant dough is just perfect. Of all the coffee shops in Arcata, Ramone's has to have the rudest, snobbiest staff. I ordered a latte and then, before the cashier rang me up, asked if I could have it with soy milk and she looked at me like I had just committed murder. "We have to know these things right away," she said. How soon am I supposed to tell her? Not once has the staff smiled or said hello or even shown the slightest signs of friendliness. A bit over priced but Ramone's offers very good quality sandwiches, coffee, and bakery goods. I don't often pay $12 for a tuna sandwich but I did here. It came on a croissant and was quite flavorful. I happened to be there on a rainy Monday in late February and the place was so packed that we were lucky to snag a table. This school year started with long lines and slow service for the early morning coffee drinkers. I thought: sure, about 90% of the staff is new. It got faster and normalized. I value my first coffee of the day. At least 40% my double espresso is made wrong. If it is not hot enough then it has the favor of a coffee that has been sitting there for longer than it should, like today. So it was my first time trying this place and I wanted to buy a cake for my friends birthday. And so we went in and I told my friend to pick a cake from the glass window in the front, and so she picked a chocolate cake. We were so excited to go home and eat it. But when we got home and sliced it a hair came out of the cake!!!! A HAIR I REPEAT A LONG STRAND OF HAIR CAME OUT OF THAT CAKE! And so I called the place and they told me a manager would call me back they called me back a couple of days later saying they aren't able to refund us which is total BS! Because that cake cost me $30.! And that they could give a gift certificate with that amount. I told them okay. I went to go pick it up next time I stopped by and it was just $14 when I had spent $30 on a cake that had strands of hair! I patronize the Eureka Old Town location mostly, but have hit up all of their cafes at least once. Hands down, they have the best cakes. Sort of. Vellutini probably has the best value but when you bring a Ramone's cake to a party, people will be pleased because they're beautiful, creative and good. Plus, you can get their cake decorators to write just about anything on a cake. Seriously. Once, a decorator wrote "Happy Birthday, Fucker" on a cake for me without batting an eye. How cool is that?! Their best cake decorator is Valerie, without a doubt. She is not the one who wrote "Fucker" on the cake, though. Valerie has created the most AMAZING cakes for me. She made my friend a cake that looked like a cat. See the picture?! I didn't expect this quality at all, I just thought I would get an orange cake with a cat face on it. She also made a cake for me with my friend's face on it. That girl is awesome. Enough about the cakes. Their coffee has improved considerably. They must have changed it since I first tried it in 2001 because it was crappy then but good now. Their pastries are great, on the inside and outside. Good atmosphere, there's always art and stuff to look at. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and I have never seen them stress out when there are a million people in line or there is some lunatic giving them a hard time (hello, Old Town?) or even during Arts! Highly disappointed. We ordered a cake for a work birthday that was really important, ordered it 3 weeks in advance. Went to pick up the cake and they forgot to write Happy Birthday on it. They took it and wrote Happy Birthday on it but they wrote it really small and it was on top of caramel so by the time i was back the few blocks at work even being super careful i came back with the writing looking like a bowl of alphabet soup! Really ridiculous. When it came time for cake i opened the box to see that they made the incorrect cake. I called and asked what they could do since they made the incorrect cake and it looked absolutely unpresentable for a work function. They said they would have to talk to the owner and get back to me. Lady at the Arcata store was nice however she called back letting me know all they could do was give me 10% off my next order. Seriously, it was a $40 cake for a special event that was pretty much ruined, woowee $4 off isn't going to fix that. I would not order a cake again from here if its an important event. I come often, with a particular drink order every time. Even though I ask for it to be heated at a certain temperature, nearly half the time it isn't made the way I request. I have thought about not coming anymore because I've had conversations about it with different staff and I feel like I'm doing the best that I can on my part, and somewhere down the line the ball gets dropped. I just want my beverage made at a certain temp; not the standard (which I was told was around 130), not extra hot, but what I ask. Sometimes it's not called out with the temp, sometimes it is, and I'm left feeling crazy because I'm already particular about the drink, do I really have to touch base and ask if it was done at the temp I want? I do. I because it isn't done at temp every time. I said it's like drink roulette, and it's given me anxiety when I come. It's crazy, but it's true. I come anyway because no one else makes the drink the way they do; not Co-Op, not Los Bagels, so, what is a girl going to do. On a side note, I ALWAYS come for their little cakes. They are the best. One of my all time favorite things is the pandowdy. I think I might fight someone for this dessert. While recovering from surgery, a kind friend sent me a few pieces and I think it may have cured me!! I now live far from Humboldt county and Ramones is one of the only things I really miss. My husband and I come three times a week. I love the cookies when they get them right, but recently they have been inconsistent with the quality. There have been multiple times when the cookies are very hard and old tasting. They seem stale. Recently I got some cookies that were so small that they were almost bite size. I love this place but if I am going to keep spending money here I want to know that I will be getting fresh and decent size cookies. This place is sooooooooo good. I went there just to pick up a snack while doing my laundry across the street. Whoa, not what I was expecting from this lil' old bakery in the market at Wildberries. I had a spinach and ricotta croissant or something close to that, and it was above par what I have had in some pretty fancy places. My boyfriend had the cheese roll, which in general, I don't care for. Not here. The roll was very savory, great balance of flavors all while being a soft spongy roll. Every time I'm within 30 miles of Wildberries Market I MAKE the time to go and get some good old hippy food and an alt-milk mocha from Ramone's! Both stores focus on local and sustainable sourcing with high quality products. At Ramone's I usually get the almond milk and a few times I've gotten the lavender mocha which was on the sweet side for me but still very tasty. I didn't get her name but I wanted to give a shout out here. I've always had really great experiences with customer service. Usually the only frustrating experiences are when there are a lot of people in line (or line clump rather). Dear Staff (especially Matt) Thanks for trying!! Last week I called from way out of town tp place an order for a large basket of mixed pastries to be prepared for pick up. It was to be a Thank you gift for a local business for a service they were providing. I didn't realize this business had so many locations, and as a result their staff person went to the wrong Ramones. My bad. :( Unfortunately an impropmtu basket could not be prepared. Or maybe a substitution wasn't even offered, or at least a call put in to another Ramone's location in attempt to rectify the situation?? I don't know But Matt followed up with a call and an apology on Monday and the charge to my credit card was reversed. All is forgiven. I don't come here very often, but I love their iced coffee and short bread cookies! I'm only giving them 4 stars because my boyfriend said that every time I bring him cookies they have a strong lemon flavor (for white chocolate chip macadamia or regular chocolate chip that is strange). I go in to Wildberries quite often to buy groceries. I don't get coffee at Ramone's unless I have to. Not that the coffee isn't good, it's okay, but the "customer service" always leaves a lot to be desired. I went in today to get a coffee while I waited for my laundry to finish across the street. Not only did they help the two people in line behind me first but I actually had to ask to pay because the one person who was at the register was so focused on counting out their tips for the day that I went ignored. Another girl was so busy gossiping she couldn't be bothered to even LOOK at me. Huckleberry Pie is rare under any circumstance. There are not many bushes left and the berries are very tiny and have even tinier stems. It is hard to believe anyone would even share their berries much less a whole pie! Just had a tiny sliver along with about 15 other people. Everyone went nuts it was so good. Not kidding.
