Went for a tour for the kids and thought they would be sick from chocolate and have a touristy vibe for the day. Spent most of the tour hearing from the owner about how his workers kiss every one of your beans that come from plantations where even bullets were found in the beans the workers sort in the factory. Not once did he talk about the exploitation cocoa farms have for children in the country of origin, inclu ding child slavery or slavery amongst adults, nor the companies commitment to working with farmers who practice ethical trade. That lack of emphasis of the dialogue regarding human rights leads me to believe that acknowledging humans rights isn't something this company has even with their own workers. A bunch of people come in for a tour and the cafe workers who are pretty new to the front area have to be in charge of seeing about 15- 30 different orders with in 5 minutes and the front stage who makes below minimum of the cost of living has to be left felling supported? I wonder if all the staff working for you have even been on a sailboat or own one? It's on your logo after all. Or is it a simple nod to the slave trade being the reasons you are a millionaire? I think it would be amazing if this company could make products that do not include slavery or mistreatment of workers. read more

This is the place to be to satisfy your chocolate cravings! They offer many varieties of chocolate and goodies. They also had free samples available to customers. There were large viewing windows enabling you to watch the workers as they make chocolate. Handcrafted high quality chocolates [Eureka CA] Before heading home we stopped by this chocolate shop located in Downtown Eureka... they were open on Memorial Day! The shop has a cafe bar and a small bakery on one side with plenty of seating and on the opposite side guests can sample some of their award winning artisanal chocolates. The chocolate bars were somewhere between $10-$12 each depending on the flavor. From the cafe I purchased 2 pieces of their Browned Butter Rice Krispy Treats. The Rice Krispies were dipped in 68% Tanzania Chocolate. Nope, not your regular rice krispy treat... the chocolate brought it to another level with the combination of Rice Krispie Treats and brown butter. They are located right on the waterfront of Humboldt Bay in Eureka. From May to August they offer factory tours every Friday at 1:00p and 2:00p. This place is an absolute chocolate lover's dream! There happened to be some pretty significant construction going on outside when we stopped here, but nothing was going to keep us from heading inside and checking this place out. You know the saying "like a kid in a candy store"? Well I think it should be changed to "a middle aged woman in a chocolate shop". My jaw literally dropped when I stepped inside. You can sample their delicious small batch chocolates and find exactly what you are craving. Not only is this shop adorable and well laid out, I could not believe the sheer variety and uniqueness of their products... and that was just in the store section. They also have a "cafe" area with fresh made treats, drinks and baked goods... Really anything you could want! We purchased a variety of chocolate dipped fruits, truffles and some melted hot chocolate to wash it all down with. But my absolute favorite thing we got was their chocolate silk pie! Delicious!! I had such a fortune of visiting on a road trip from SoCal to Portland. What an amazing treat, my favorite chocolate that I discovered at my local coffee shop... actually was here, in the least expected sleepy, coastal part of Eureka. That trip happened in 2014. Here I am, a decade later still thinking about that visit, while enjoying a limited release 79% Dark Chocolate "Vanuatu Malekula" island origined bar. What decadence. I always enjoy every bar, with the Black Fig, and Brown Butter w/ Nibs being my all-time favorites of their staples. But this limited release is truly amazing. But Dick Taylor Craft Chocolate is just that. Many of their single-origin chocolate bars have even been recognized by the International Chocolate Awards and the Academy of Chocolates. And their flagship Eureka store hosts all of their critically acclaimed products, with a dedicated coffee shop and cafe to boot. The boutique makes its home in a vast converted warehouse. The space is immediately welcoming and accented by personal touches. Expansive windows and bright lighting fixtures amplify the clean, whitewashed walls. To the left, counters are curated with Dick Taylor chocolates and other local products, feeling more like an art gallery than a candy shop. To the right, light-wood tables (each decked with a flower standing within a glass bottle) are arranged in front of a vast coffee bar. Canoes, twinkle lights, and sound-dampening pads hang from the exposed ductwork and beams high overhead. Mellow instrumental plays around the room. My partner and I visited soon before closing on a weekday, but Dick Taylor still boasted a surprising stream of customers. We opted to try the Belize Single Origin Drinking Chocolate. Even though it was billed as the lightest hot chocolate option, it remained deliciously intense. The heavy clotted cream was more reminiscent of ice cream than Starbucks whipped cream. Meanwhile, our Tanzanian-sourced Chocolate Mousse was light yet full-bodied, and we enjoyed the accompanying vanilla-forward whipped cream. Neither creation channeled the bitterest of dark chocolate, and neither was overwhelmingly sweet. Our bill was just $10 -- in the city, I could easily imagine a store charging double. After our eats, we perused the shop section and were quickly drawn in by some dangerously delicious samples. Before we knew it, we were spending another $30 on chocolate Christmas gifts (which ended up being hits!). It just so happens that the Inn she booked for us is within walking distance to DT Chocolate. We ended up coming into DT Chocolate before doing the Madaket tour where I enjoyed 2 cups of hot chocolate (the European & the 100% drinking chocolate), I preferred the 100% drinking chocolate as it has 0 sugar and is true-to-form. I really did not expect there to be a full-fledged chocolate shop and factory in Eureka, but here we are. This was one of the must-do items in Eureka so was excited to come. Inside the store has a lot of different chocolate items as well as a lot of samplers to try. I ordered the Vanilla Bean Hot Chocolate and it was unlike any other hot chocolates I have ever had. I felt that that it almost had a bit of a bitter taste to it, like they used dark choclate or latte-esque techniques. The foam on top as well as the homemade whipped cream was what added to the sweetness. It was definitely very interesting and I do appreciate that it was not overly sweet. Overall, I would recommend coming here to try at least one of their drinks or menu items as well as the free samples. The chocolate here is fantastic. We stopped in right before closing and I am so glad that we made it in time. We picked up three different bars of chocolate and two chocolate chip cookies. Everything was soooo good. I'm tempted to go back and get more cookies before we leave, they were that good. The space is well designed and allows you the time to browse. There is plenty of seating for the cafe, which has many appealing treats and beverages. As we continued our after lunch trek along the Eureka Boardwalk, we saw this warehouse structure that was screaming at us to stop by. Going in, I was expecting an older fixture, much like the candy stores of any old towns. The factory had newer decor with tilted boats hanging from the ceiling and paintings adorning the walls. It was nevertheless another snap happy visit inside this less than two year old factory. As I was sampling the chocolate bars of varying cacao content, my wife and son couldn't resist ordering dessert. They got the raspberry chocolate cupcake and chocolate covered strawberry marshmallow. These two sweet items were really good. The crew were really nice. My questions were answered with a smile and we even got free 4th of July wristbands As we'll be in Eureka over the weekend, we'd probably stop by again for coffee or hot chocolate. read more

Lots of hype, but to me the cost, the amount of product for that price, and the unique flavor wasn't worth it. I actually found a couple of the flavors too strong / bad. Additionally, I purchased an assortment as a gift and paid by PayPal. Weeks later I had to follow up to ask where the order was. It was supposed to be a gift but did not arrive in time. Here is what I received back: "Hi Tom, Thank you for placing an order with us. I was able to find your order (#128938) placed under this email tom@---------.com and a confirmation email should have been sent to that email. Your order was placed on June 15th and was held to ship until the beginning of July because it contained a microbatch subscription. New microbatch subscriptions placed after the 7th of the month are held to ship until the following month. Often, our microbatches sell out very quickly, and this buffer helps ensure that no customer places an order for the current microbatch when it might be sold out. I apologize for the confusion! We will be shipping this order early this coming week. It was held to ship after the 4th of July because of the shipping delays (and this often leads to melted chocolate) that occur when packages are shipped before a holiday. This place is truly magical, from the atmosphere to the decorations, and all of the goodies, they have something for everyone. Definitely try the dried fruit dipped in chocolate.
