If you're craving some Colombian food, this is a decent place to check out of you are looking for somewhere that is not as commercialized as Noches. They have a parking lot so you do not have to worry about parking in the street which is a win for this area. The inside is spacious has a really unique and fun ambiance. They have a bar you can sit at, along with tables that are great for both small and large groups. Drinks here are taste good but are mainly filled juices- you can have three martinis and feel perfectly sober with a sugar buzz. The food is easily 4 star worthy and they are extremely generous with the portions- I have always left with a ton of leftovers no matter what I get. The service is horrible unfortunately. They either mess up an order or take forever to bring your order or even come to your table. I have been here quite a few times and it happens regularly. So if you come, be prepared to wave down your waitress or bartender. read more

I believe people go for the atmosphere. It's a big space, well decorated and has a pretty large bar. They have valet parking so that's convenient. They have music too.... sometimes a DJ or live band. And it's loud. But there is no place to dance. I mean people make room and dance between tables but that can be annoying for the other tables and waitstaff.  Also, the food is good but over priced. The drinks are good too but that depends on the bartender. Nothing unique about the menu.  They have a lot of staff and while many are working, I always see a group just hanging out/on break. I know they deserve this but perhaps not on the floor. I can't tell who is truly on break or who is just chatting. It can be a bit difficult to get their attention at times and many don't speak English.  This place isn't really my cup of tea. Don't get me wrong, it's almost always packed. And people get dressed up to go but I don't feel the place warrants it. I mean they should have an open space that can be used as a dance floor or tone down the music. They should manage the staff a bit better. Honestlu I loves what I got, but the service was awful. I asked for water to 4 different people and it was not given to me. I even went to the bar and they made me wait almost 10 minutes. They had a lot of typical Colombian food. the buñuelos were fresh and super soft in the inside with a nice cripy outside. The empandas had a great meat to potato ratio. The first you notice about any Restaurant/Bar place is their customer service and, Racho Mateo is the worse about it. From the moment you call to make an order to take or to be delivered and/or dining in whoever works in there treats you horrible!!!!! I live nearby and in this neighborhood we make orders and we all agree that the customer service is awful. They don't even have manners in responding to a simple "Good Morning/afternoon" or either "Thank you". Last month we made an order by phone and when we went there to picked it up and we paid in cash, the cashier automatically kept the change, and without asking she put that change in their tip box!. It is common sense and it is educated that you must return the customer their change and the customer himself/herself should decide what to do with their money, I could have left them more money for a tip, however, the cashier made her own decision with my money. This also happened to other customers in the area. If you're going to rancho, do yourself the favor, and seriously check the receipt, pay with credit/debit card and left the tip in cash and make sure you haven't been overcharged for something. When it comes to the food, I've had their breakfast/lunch and diner a couple of times and it's nothing special. Their bakery items are almost always stale and their arepas really suck. I always buy the picada and today I have decided that is going to be the last time because it is awful! the meat is undercooked. read more

Nice, festive atmosphere... I ate at this restaurant twice in one week; once alone and once with my wife. On my first visit, I ordered the skirt steak, which was a little chewy, but full of flavor. On the second trip, my wife ordered the columbian style steak, and I ordered the NY strip. My wife loved the columbian steak, and I also tasted it and it was flavorful. Huge location and great live music. Decided to have my birthday Dinner at the North Bergen Rancho Mateo. We had a big party of 30 guest. They do not do reservations unfortunately (too many people cancel). We decided to go on a Saturday night and it was very busy. They do have complimentary valet, but it you arrive after 9, you may have to find parking on the street. Quick snapshot of the establishment: Restaurant has an awesome Colombian atmosphere to it. The decorations provide a nice touch. Open seating in the main floor and plenty of seats around the bar. Televisions throughout the restaurant, great for the World Cup this summer (VAMOS COLOMBIA). Bathrooms could use a routine check up for maintenance. It was slippery and one of the stalls was out of order. Lights usually get dim around 11pm and the DJ takes over the music after the live band. DJ was also playing a good variety of songs and plenty of space to dance. Service: Although we were a big party, we did wait about 1 hour and a half to get seated. We stayed by the bar as the rest of our party arrived, so it worked out. Once we were seated, two waitresses took each half. Once everyone got situated, orders were taken right away. I was impressed on how fast we all received our food. We didn't wait more than 20 minutes to receive food for our large group. Drinks were brought regularly as well. Our servers and other employees ware very polite and attentive. Food/Drinks: My wife and I shared the Medium Picada and it was delicious. The salad had a distinctive taste with a little kick, phenomenal! Everyone's meals looked very tasty. Prices: Average plate is between 10 to 15 dollars. Overall experience went really well. Many of my family members have never been to Rancho Mateo and they all loved their experience. We danced, drank aguardiente, and had a great time. Would definitely come back again!! read more

Great ambiance, food, drinks and service! I went there with 3 other people on a Friday night around 8pm, and we got seated right away. We ordered guacamole with tostones and avocado stuffed with shrimp as apps. I ordered the bandeja paisa for dinner and the portion was massive- took half of it home with me! It came with steak, chorizo, fried pork belly, an egg, avocado, corn cake, rice and beans. Everything had great flavor, others at my table were happy about their meals as well. First of all we ordered appetizers and within seconds our entrees come out. My husbands food was all wrong and he spoke with the manager and he took the appetizers off. I ate my food and thinking i was fine after i ate the bandeja paisa well i ended up with food poisoning. So bad the pains in my stomach and the vomiting for 3 days straight was unbearable. The doctor told me it's definitely food poisoning. So i almost ended up being in the hospital because of this. I would not recommend to come here. Worst experience ever. We had to ask 3 TIMES for them to sing Happy Birthday to my dad. Since its Hispanic restaurant I accidently Sadi excuse me instead of saying it in Spanish and I don't see a problem in saying it in English and the guy ignored me and rolled his eyes at me which I didn't like at all. After what seemed like forever when they sang happy bday to my dad the woman singing gave us a mean and dirty look which looked pointed directly at us. if you don't know who I am talking about it's the woman who was old and wore way to much makeup for her old age. I was here for a soccer game last summer and I couldn't believe the mistake that one of the bartenders had made while I was asking for TWO Coronas. He comes up to me with my debit card and says that he "accidentally" charged me for TEN. I repeat TEN. How does that happen? And then he tells me that there is nothing he can do and just walked away. I was furious. My $12 purchase had just jumped to $60. Another issue I had at the bar another day was that I had ordered two margaritas and a woman gave it to me in these tiny plastic cups that you find near a bathroom sink. I paid $24 dollars total for those two tiny drinks. When I went to rancho Mateo another time after that, I had a coronita (margarita with a tilted corona) in a legitimate glass this time, and a second regular classic margarita. Also totaling to $24. It seems like this bar is a total rip off and bartenders are overcharging customers for their benefit. If you're going to rancho, do yourself the favor, and seriously check the receipt and make sure you haven't been overcharged for something. Absolute rip off this place. When it comes to the food, I've had their breakfast a couple of times and it's nothing special. Their bakery items are almost always stale and their arepas suck. You can definitely get better food at another Colombian place and for cheaper. This one star can go to the good calentado I had that one time. read more

I like coming to this place and I have often but what happened on Monday night was just shady and tacky. My girl friend and I went to have a beer and there was two guys next to us who bought us a second round. When the check arrives the bartenders had put the beers the guys had got us on our tab. I didnt realize right away but then questioned myself as to why the tab was almost 56 dollars for only two loaded coronas. I should have said something then and I regret I didn't. Aside from being over charged double my tab, the female bartenders who work there apparently know a mutual friend and they told that person we were there that evening drunk. I think that's an invasion of privacy and that employees shouldn't be playing private detective. That's aweful and truely makes me feel uncomfortable. It seems this place has no boundaries on people's personal space and I have a feel now the check was probably done out of spite instead of a mistake. A place where me and my coworkers would enjoy often has not become a place I have to second guess going to. read more

I have hesitated to come check out this place since it opened , but I knew at some point I was bound to check it out I drive by this place every day on my way to my business. What really made me want to check it out was the fact that their parking lot was full every time I left my business and headed home. Today I had a few extra hours to kill and decided to grab some lunch. The name says it all RANCHO MATEO (Mateas Ranch) You walk into exactly that a ranch. Fist of all the place is huge. I guess that is why it was under construction for about 5 months. They literally built this place from scratch. The decoration is amazing I guess u have to check it out really appreciate it. You can tell they put some serious money into it. They have tvs everywhere so you can also come watch some sports, and have some good food with it. Thier menu has all your typical Colombian dishes, in addition to alot of grilled dishes, they use real lumber. This place is more like a steak house. Think of almost any type of steak cut and they have it. I tried thier Mateo salad (I'm on a diet). It was really good. I contains shrimp, skirt steak, and chicken accompanied by letuce tomatoes and avocados 13.45 USD. It was delicious it was also big enough to feed 2. I want to thank the owners of RANCHO MATEO For bringing such a great establishment to my home town of NORTH BERGEN. I will surely return to try out your other foods on my cheat meal. read more

They have someone the best empanadas and orange carrot juice. It's always made to order and it taste super fresh and delicious. When I walk home from the bus, I usually stop here for a chicken empanada and a orange juice because it brightens up my day in the morning. This time instead of the chicken empanadas I ate a guava and cream cheese empanada and a cheese white corn torta and it was so delicious. They are super addicting and you can't just have one. OK...so last night I tried the red snapper to take home for dinner plus chicken with mushrooms....the snapper was still going strong today for lunch...it's a go for sure.... I will definitely get the snapper at the Rancho when ever I feel like eating one....there is only one other place in the area that has a great snapper - we all know which restaurant I'm talking about....this one is better...and served a day after - much much better...it came back to life very well. Unlike its competitors like Noches de Colombia they offer a selection of BBQ style traditional meals. My family frequents this establishment and they've become regulars according to the staff it's kind of funny . On this visit I ordered the Tostones with Guacamole as the appetizer(salted fried plantains ) and for my entree I enjoyed the delicious grilled chicken with white rice and French fries! Let not forget about Happy hour: I ordered Grapefruit sangria(highly recommend )! The food was good but the service was horrible . Only customers that were there was 1 other family besides us . Took forever to get our drinks we requested water with our meals as well . The water never came so I couldn't finish eating had to take the rest home to finish it . The scramble eggs barely had any eggs in it it was filled with tomatoes and onions which I love but I would like some eggs with that please . The worst part of this experience was the nerve to underline the suggested tip and obviously he underlined the 20% . Had they given me good service I would have left more then that as the meals are really cheap here. But instead I left 15%.
