My dining companion received an even larger serving of the coarse chopped pork. I got to try a bite, but I preferred the chopped pork. The red slaw was finely chopped and very tasty. It was somewhat tame compared to other variations of red slaw that definitely have a little kick, like at Whispering Pines in Albemarle. The crinkle-cut fries were not quite hot and moderately crispy but were upstaged by the rest of the meal. It's all counter service at Henry James, but everyone was very friendly and genuinely trying to provide great customer service. My food didn't reflect the hype...at all. The pork tasted like a pork roast had been roasted in the oven in water without any seasoning, then chopped up and put on a plate with some bbq sauce that was also lacking flavor. The coleslaw was flavorless. The fries were edible, frozen crinkle fries. The hush puppies had zero flavor. The sweet tea was the star of the show. I didn't say a word because the locals seem to love it. But if you are accustomed to having good BBQ, you know when it's not good. I cannot recommend.

I think some places call it pie and others call it casserole and I've even seen both items on the same menu). There were hard crunchy bits of potatoes like it had been sitting out for a day or so and I got the scrapings from the side of the pan. They were not fresh. The gravy wasn't bad. The green beans were straight out of a can and seasoned with bacon or some kind of pork. They served both biscuits and cornbread. I took a bite out of the biscuit and didn't eat the cornbread. From the outside, I thought this was going to be different than what I saw on the inside. They serve breakfast here too and from the reviews and pictures, looks like breakfast may be what keeps this place open. Or the desserts. They do have a huge selection of desserts at the front entrance and they looked good. I don't think I'll be back. Not because of the service but because of quality and cleanliness.
