    Delicious southern style comfort food
    Karl K.

I told you this would happen.  A few days back I stated that if May continues to rain on my parade that I would have to seek more comfort food. So on the 27th, with Tropical Storm Bertha dumping huge quantities of rain on North Carolina, it was time for comfort food, round 2.  This time I chose the 220 Grill just south of Asheboro. Here I was greeted and checked on regularly by an attentive and friendly staff (including the owner) and was treated to some excellent, home cooked comfort food. Hamburger steak: cooked perfectly with a nice char on the exterior yet still juicy inside. It reminded me of the way my Grandma Cleo made it for us when we were kids. Delicious! Lima beans and blackeyed peas: both were canned but tasted great. That's what comfort food is all about. Mashed potatoes (not pictured): you know it is southern food when they call them "creamed potatoes", and they were great. Moreover, they make them from fresh potatoes, peeling the potatoes daily. And it shows. Hush puppies: excellent; nice, crisp exterior, perfectly cooked, and delicious. Sweet tea: excellent; this is genuine southern sweet tea with nice tea flavor and enough sugar to give your pancreas a serious workout.  So whether it is raining or not, if you are in need of some genuine southern comfort food served alongside some genuine southern hospitality, I recommend the 220 Grill.

In a town loaded with small, worn, divey cafes and diners, this place is certainly one of them - small roadside sign, gravel parking lot, entrance to the bathroom facilities from the outside only, small & shabby interior. Some would argue that the dated inside and outside appearence indicated character, others that it indicated a need for a full remodling. I opt for character, but the clock is definitely ticking. Adding support for character is the ad on the takeout menu for a Deer Processing establishment - "You Tag' Em, We'll Bag 'Em. They serve breakfast and lunch here, closing at 2 PM. Usual breakfast items, with the addition of Brains & Eggs,a Crispy Beef Steak (I know, I have no idea either) and Grilled Weiners - not sure how you would want your eggs cooked with grilled weiners, but I digress. 2 eggs with bacon goes for $3.65 Some daily lunch specials, as well as a list of "Short Order" items, including BBQ Plate, Kraut & Weiners (grilled, I guess), Hamburger Steak (sm, med, or lg), Crispy Steak (2 pieces), and something called a Fish Square, of which you receive 2 pieces (squared I would guess), and a Shrimp Plate on which you get 17 - 21 shrimps, counting is optional. Food is generally good, not great. Skip the BBQ Plate ( BBQ Rule #1: if it isn't cooked there, don't eat it there), the Fish Squares would seem to be a gamble. The sandwiches are nice, burger and the chili dog is pretty good. Skip the FF as well, you'll be disappointed.

    Cajun style steak & cheese

The new owner, Harvey, is an award winning chef and has really done a great job with the food. The steak & cheese sandwiches are crazy good! He has 3 versions, traditional, southwest style an Cajun. He has also added a Beef Brisket sandwich to the menu as well. There are always daily plate specials that are really good as well. If you go on a Monday, try the Chicken & Dumplings. I have lived 2 blocks from this restaurant for 22 years and used to visit about once a month. Now that this new chef had taken over, I am there 2 or 3 times a week. The food is sooooo good. The decor is dated and not much to look at. The restrooms are actually outside. Go for the food and you won't be disappointed !

This place is money....right off 220 and not even a backtrack to get back to the highway...quick and delicious...cheesesteak is legit!

I had already chosen my "carved turkey Reuben sandwich", yum, when I first went at around 12:30-the line was out the door, so went to my appointment, hoping I could get back by the 230 close time. Returned at about 215 yay, and happily walked right up to the counter to order my lunch, when I was told they were out of carved turkey (the way the server explained it sounded like an ingredient in the Reuben was out, not the actual turkey. I asked if the "simple turkey sandwich" had carved turkey, and I was told no, it was deli meat-deli meat is so processed and unhealthy. I was super disappointed. So I opted for a Smashburger after asking how they liked it and she said it was "delicious". Well, it's not a Smashburger. It's a double burger on a nothing special bun. I was going to take the bun off and eat it with a knife and fork, and I was looking for those yummy crispy edges on a authentic Smashburger. They didn't exist. This was a double cheeseburger with very thick patties. I think they were grass fed so kudos to them for that,, but it was incredibly dry sadly, and when I saw that the bun had been toasted with butter, I put it back on and had a couple more bites, but was super disappointed-and trust me nobody loves a great cheeseburger more than I but now I love smash burgers as well!. I also ordered the Orzo cucumber and feta salad (as well as the french fries) on the side and while it was OK, it was nothing special. French fries were just meh. After all the stellar reviews I had I was very surprised that they would make a double cheeseburger and call it a Smash-burger-I wish these restaurants would stop doing that, it's misleading, other restaurants do this too. And for the money I spent, I should've just gone to Shake shack! I DO think it's worth a second chance, and I will say everybody there was very kind on the Service level and it's an adorable, really beautiful spot and vibe ! I strolled around and looked at the merchandise afterwards. So hopefully I'll be back but just super disappointed I didn't have a nice meal and left hungry.

It's hardly ever both in my experience. Service met the expectation. She was attentive and kept my drink full. I ordered Chicken Pie or Chicken Casserole (I'm honestly not sure what the difference is. It's a LOCALS favorite, not found in surrounding cities. I think some places call it pie and others call it casserole and I've even seen both items on the same menu). It may have been either the last serving left, scraped off the edges of the pan or it was made on a previous date and re-heated. The same with the mashed potatoes. There were hard crunchy bits of potatoes like it had been sitting out for a day or so and I got the scrapings from the side of the pan. They were not fresh. The gravy wasn't bad. The green beans were straight out of a can and seasoned with bacon or some kind of pork. They served both biscuits and cornbread. I took a bite out of the biscuit and didn't eat the cornbread. From the outside, I thought this was going to be different than what I saw on the inside. They serve breakfast here too and from the reviews and pictures, looks like breakfast may be what keeps this place open. Or the desserts. They do have a huge selection of desserts at the front entrance and they looked good. I don't think I'll be back. Not because of the service but because of quality and cleanliness.

Large menus also give me the impression everything can't be great. My son ordered the kids spaghetti with French fries. He like the spaghetti it was seasoned well however his French fries came out cold. My daughter got fish and chips her French fries were hot my son stole some of hers. She didn't like the hush puppies said they were too hard. They were fried a little harder than she was use to. The coleslaw had great flavor but looked like it was sent thru a blender and gave it a weird texture. My husband also got the fish and chips had the same complaint about the coleslaw didn't like the texture. I got a breakfast sausage plate. It looked like it was made in house I didn't ask but it was delicious. Eggs were cooked perfectly nice and fluffy with cheese and the grits cooked well needed a dash of salt but that is my preference. Everything was good not great. Personally would we come back, but not at a first choice. But if you're in the area looking for a quick diner that is priced well I would suggest it to others.

Brewskie's offerings are quite expansive, with a HUGE selection of flatbreads, wraps, quesadillas,…read moresides, smoothies, coffees, teas, as well as, much to my confusion, cosmetic treatments such as facials, waxes, and massages. I really didn't know what to make of it all, and worried the food wouldn't be very good, since their focus seemed split in several directions. However, I tried several different things on the menu, and most of them did not disappoint. We split a Green Bacon Flatbread and Cajun Chicken Quesadilla, and I also got a side of mac and cheese and a strawberry smoothie. The flatbread was pretty good, although it did JUST taste like bacon. I ate it with ranch, which they do well. I suspect their other flatbreads (which they have a LOT of) are less one-note, but I'll never know, because I would just order this one again. The quesadilla was great, and the chicken was well-seasoned. They also season the outside of the tortilla, and I appreciated the extra kick of flavor. This came with sour cream and a salsa verde. The mac and cheese was mild, creamy, and chock full of pepper. Usually I like a sharper cheese flavor, but I enjoyed it. Smoothies were extremely cheap (under $5 for a 16 oz), but unfortunately we got what we paid for. They were wayyyy too sweet for our tastes, and not a lot of any fruit flavors came through. Our server was kind, attentive, and quick. The interior was very spacious and I noticed several people with laptops out doing work while they drank coffee. It's a nice space.

It was a really nice combination of flavors with the sausage and peppers. I sampled my boyfriend's flatbread (pickled) and thought it was great as well!
