Was invited here with a group of folks as a place to go to for great BBQ. From the moment I stepped in the door it felt like chaos, disorganization and kind of stale with a bunch of staff running around like chickens with their heads cut off. I ordered the chopped pork bbq plate which came with coleslaw, hush puppies, fries and a sweet tea. The person across the table from me stated they smoke their meat there and it's always good. My food didn't reflect the hype...at all. The pork tasted like a pork roast had been roasted in the oven in water without any seasoning, then chopped up and put on a plate with some bbq sauce that was also lacking flavor. The coleslaw was flavorless. The fries were edible, frozen crinkle fries. The hush puppies had zero flavor. The sweet tea was the star of the show. I didn't say a word because the locals seem to love it. But if you are accustomed to having good BBQ, you know when it's not good. I cannot recommend. read more

Hop's has been around forever and it's perfect for what it does. The menu is small town Carolina and the service is friendly, engaging and efficient. Great spot for bbq or hot dogs or whatever. The interior is dated with worn flooring but sparkling clean, and as an oddity, the inside of the building is much larger and comfortable than the cramped hole-in-the-wall you expect from seeing it on the outside. It can easily seat 80-100 people and the openness is amazing. I give it a solid five stars because it's just what it is and it does it as well as anywhere you're going to find. read more

Good hearty comfort food, served by friendly staff in a comfortable setting that won't break the bank. With the restrooms outside it's a bit of a trip back in time to the 1950s but we say enjoy the ride. Eat where the local folks do. Get some pineapple pie to go. read more

Hop's Bar-B-Q is a welcoming place to dine today. The restaurant is seat yourself and a waitress will bring you a menu and take your order. The restaurant opened in 1952 and was part of a sit-in on January 27th 1964. I knew about the Woolworth "sit-in" in Greensboro NC. I did not realize that the success of that sit-in led to other sit-ins. The Asheboro sit-ins on Sunset Ave happened four years later as those businesses were still segregated. When the peaceful protesters were not allowed inside they circled around the building holding hands while laying on the ground so nobody else could enter. They were spit on, beaten and called names. Eventually 60 were arrested. North Carolina has an ugly history but I wanted to go here because this was where civil rights were fought for. I ordered the BBQ plate with fries and hushpuppies. The sauce was different than I had before. The sauce that came on the bbq was thicker than the extra sauce in the bottle as that was watery. It still tasted really good. The prices are very reasonable here as well. I'd return here for another meal. read more

This was our first time coming here. I ordered a bbq sandwich with watermelon and my husband ordered hot dogs with fries. I sat facing towards the kitchen and noticed that the cook grabbed my husband's fries with his bare hands and placed it on his plate! Then he wiped his hand on his pants and grabbed the watermelon and put it on my plate. I was in utter disgust!! I saw he did this to someone else's watermelon as well and they did not say anything and proceeded to eat it, not sure if they noticed or not. After complaining they grabbed some utensils to serve me some new watermelon from the SAME bucket the guy stuck his hand in.. NO THANK YOU. We will not be coming back read more

So a group of us (3 adults and 2 kids) were super hungry and ready for an early lunch; we were out & about in Downtown Asheboro and decided to give Hops a try. We sat ourselves and chose a booth; nothing else to choose from really so if you're a big party, be prepared to be separated. We didn't care though, we were so hungry all five of us shoved ourselves into a booth. Our waitress was super friendly and helped us go over the menu, this was our first time dining here and we are all still a little bit new to authentic Southern cuisine. Our kids were pleased with grilled cheese, chicken tenders and french fries. I chose the special of the day which was chicken and dumplings; it came with two sides and I chose onion rings and macaroni & cheese. The hush puppies were delicious. I really enjoyed my meal, all of us at the table enjoyed picking at the onion rings and I thought the mac & cheese was very tasty. I would absolutely come back to Hops, I would get the chicken & dumplings again for sure and I definitely want to try breakfast. Thank you! read more

Went to Hops for lunch and got the large bbq platter with slaw and green beens. To be honest the meal was super lame. The bbq was really wet and had no flavor at all. The sauce on top was like bbq sauce from a bottle not homemade. I personally prefer eastern style bbq. You are better off to ride 28 minutes to Siler City and go to Smithfield's chicken and bbq. If you go to Smithfield's you wont be disappointed. read more

Bbq had no flavor at all. The sauce slathered over the top was just ok. Slaw was ok, green beans kinda sweet but ok. Trying to low carb so didnt try the pup's. The atmosphere was nice for a hole in the wall mom and pop. read more

Hops BBQ has new chefs in the kitchen now. The BBQ is delicious and a large plate makes 3 meals for me now. The onion flavored hushpuppies are simply the best I've eaten. My girlfriend brought home lunch while she was out and well, she brought me Chicken and Dumplins that was ALL dumplin with maybe enough shreds of chicken to fill half of my spoon once - super heavy and thick the cinnamon apples were good, hush puppies were good neither were anything special the peach cobbler, well, i don't know because after getting through the bowl of dumplin, i couldn't stomach another bite of anything - will try that later though read more

For a long period of time this place produced pretty good barbecue (not quite Eastern, not quite Lexington), but those times are past - similar to the declines of Kepley's in High Point, Short Sugar's in Reidsville, and Fuzzy's in Madison. Folks still come here, as they do to the others, out of habit, for convenience, and in fewer numbers, but the barbecue is just not that good anymore. They still offer daily specials, sandwiches, and hot dogs, in addition to barbecue, in the same location in downtown that they've occupied since around 1950. The digs are worn looking, the epitome of a mom and pop barbecue joint/greasy spoon. I still grab a hot dog here now and then as i did last week, but not the barbecue - in town Henry James or Blue Mist are better choices, and even these are middle of the road barbecue choices. read more

I walked in the door at about 6:25pm not knowing that they close at 6pm during the week. I was welcomed in before i realized this fact. I apologized and told them I was not a local and they took care of me :) most of the food was put away but I was offered a couple of BBQ sandwiches to go. The bun size was larger than most with a good amount of meat. The meat was large pulled pieces that were tender and warm laces with a drizzle of sauce and slaw. The slaw was minimal and not to overbearing; a good compliment, which I liked. As I waited for my sandwiches, a local was raving about it for 5 minutes and how people would travel from miles and miles away to get it. So I had to grab some on the side too. If I had to describe this sauce, I would call it the Mason/Dixon of Carolina's East/West debate. The sauce was a contradiction throughout; sweet and vinegary, spicy and mild, thick and thin. I loved it! I don't like to get food to go on my first visit but I had no choice. I will definitely try this place again to see if I can love more than the sauce. Service was fine and the historical nature of the establishment and unusual layout of the restaurant with bathrooms outside of the main area requiring patrons to walk outside like old gas stations, made the establishment....unique. However, the food delivered to our table wasn't as tasty and delicious as I had hoped it would be. If I had it to do over again I would chose another establishment. read more

Hop's has been in the same location for about 50 years, maybe more. It's a nice little restaurant, not at all upscale but tasty. Like most of downtown Asheboro, it closes early. Great spot for a bite of lunch. The barbecue is good! I remember getting chili dogs at Hop's for a dime when I was a kid, then going to the movies next door at the Sunset Theatre. Wow. read more

We haven't eaten here in a while and I was very disappointed. The BBQ sandwich was dry. No flavor, no sauce and very little slaw. The hush puppies were ok, but nothing to write home about. The young waitress was rude and acted like all she wanted was for us to leave. Probably won't return. read more

This is my new/old favorite barbeque sandwich place in Asheboro. The sandwich has lots of meat on it and one is quite filling. Delicious! The Friday stewed beef special is also very good. But if you want some of their peach cobbler, you better go in at lunch. By dinner time, it's all gone. read more

Yuck. BBQ was cold and tasteless and slaw was warm. Hoped the crinkle fries (my fave) would save the meal, but they were undercooked. The hushpuppies were ok. I love a good dive restaurant, often times they're full of surprises. This was just a disappointment. read more

I grew up in this place. The people are like family to us. Come and have some good food and some friendly conversation.

I would not suggest this place due to the Bar-B-Que. Lacked good flavor and was served with a sauce that smacked of ketchup. The service was good and the pork was average at best in an area known for good que. read more

Went there for dinner on a Thursday evening. Small place on "Main St.". Hoped to get some good BBQ since they have been in business since 1952. Ordered a large BBQ plate with fries, cold slaw and hush puppies for $7.25 plus 25 cents extra for sliced instead of chopped. Quantity of food was good but had little flavor since it was oven cooked. Home made sauce was ok. The meat was just warm and by the time I ate 1/2, the rest was cold so I had it to go for a sandwich the next day. They open early AM and have a good breakfast and lunch menu. Just ate at Hop's and had a fabulous home cooked meal a remembrance of my Mom and Grandmother. We had the pleasure of having the specials of the day which were the chicken and dumplings and chicken livers with two sides and bread of our choice. When you walk in it's set up to a family friendly eatery that has booth seating. Our waitresses Brooklyn and Cathy were very friendly and took our orders really right away. The food came out and cooked to perfection. The dumplings were creamy and fluffy as they should be.. very filling!!! The chicken livers were moist and crispy ( only thing I needed was a side of gravy). Our vegetable side had lots of flavor and cooked just like my Mama(a lot love went into the meal). I definitely am looking forward to my next meal!!! read more

This month i decided to stop in at Hop's bbq for lunch. It is what i call a hole in the wall, but has a good number of tables inside with table service. It looks like it used to be a gas station. To use the restroom, you must go outside and use the old gas station style bathroom. But there is no sink, so you come back into the dining area and wash your hands. It's a little awkward, but quaint at the same time. The service was quick and friendly. They don't offer a coarse chop, but the sliced bbq is pretty close. It is served with a rich tomato based sauce and was very tender and flavorful. I substituted the fries for hot chips with ranch dressing and also had cole slaw and hushpuppies. Everything was good, but some of the hot chips were soggy, which i really hate and that's why I took away a star. They sell nice T-shirts at a reasonable price, but we really had to search hard through the inventory to find a 2XL. They have an extensive menu including breakfast. They seem to do everything quite well. read more

For some of the best BBQ in Asheboro. The people are so nice and helpful to all the custemers and go out of their way to make every thing right for every one that comes in to eat.
