Classic Carolina style hotdog, served "all the way." Don't let the photo throw you off; it's excellent

Hop's has been around forever and it's perfect for what it does. The menu is small town Carolina and the service is friendly, engaging and efficient. Great spot for bbq or hot dogs or whatever. The interior is dated with worn flooring but sparkling clean, and as an oddity, the inside of the building is much larger and comfortable than the cramped hole-in-the-wall you expect from seeing it on the outside. It can easily seat 80-100 people and the openness is amazing. I give it a solid five stars because it's just what it is and it does it as well as anywhere you're going to find.

Hop's Bar-B-Q is a welcoming place to dine today. The restaurant is seat yourself and a waitress will bring you a menu and take your order. The restaurant opened in 1952 and was part of a sit-in on January 27th 1964. I knew about the Woolworth "sit-in" in Greensboro NC. I did not realize that the success of that sit-in led to other sit-ins. The Asheboro sit-ins on Sunset Ave happened four years later as those businesses were still segregated. When the peaceful protesters were not allowed inside they circled around the building holding hands while laying on the ground so nobody else could enter. They were spit on, beaten and called names. Eventually 60 were arrested. North Carolina has an ugly history but I wanted to go here because this was where civil rights were fought for. I ordered the BBQ plate with fries and hushpuppies. The sauce was different than I had before. The sauce that came on the bbq was thicker than the extra sauce in the bottle as that was watery. It still tasted really good. The prices are very reasonable here as well. I'd return here for another meal.

So a group of us (3 adults and 2 kids) were super hungry and ready for an early lunch; we were out & about in Downtown Asheboro and decided to give Hops a try. We sat ourselves and chose a booth; nothing else to choose from really so if you're a big party, be prepared to be separated. We didn't care though, we were so hungry all five of us shoved ourselves into a booth. Our waitress was super friendly and helped us go over the menu, this was our first time dining here and we are all still a little bit new to authentic Southern cuisine. Our kids were pleased with grilled cheese, chicken tenders and french fries. I chose the special of the day which was chicken and dumplings; it came with two sides and I chose onion rings and macaroni & cheese. The hush puppies were delicious. I really enjoyed my meal, all of us at the table enjoyed picking at the onion rings and I thought the mac & cheese was very tasty. I would absolutely come back to Hops, I would get the chicken & dumplings again for sure and I definitely want to try breakfast. Thank you!

Nice people. Mom and Pop atmosphere. They have a wide selection, short order style. My daughter likes their hot dogs. I get a tomorrow sandwich with fries. Small restaurant, but bigger than it looks on the outside.

I walked in the door at about 6:25pm not knowing that they close at 6pm during the week. I was welcomed in before i realized this fact. I apologized and told them I was not a local and they took care of me :) most of the food was put away but I was offered a couple of BBQ sandwiches to go. The bun size was larger than most with a good amount of meat. The meat was large pulled pieces that were tender and warm laces with a drizzle of sauce and slaw. The slaw was minimal and not to overbearing; a good compliment, which I liked. As I waited for my sandwiches, a local was raving about it for 5 minutes and how people would travel from miles and miles away to get it. So I had to grab some on the side too. If I had to describe this sauce, I would call it the Mason/Dixon of Carolina's East/West debate. The sauce was a contradiction throughout; sweet and vinegary, spicy and mild, thick and thin. I loved it! I don't like to get food to go on my first visit but I had no choice. I will definitely try this place again to see if I can love more than the sauce. At this point I would rate it a 3.5 until I can get back and get a meal. My photo was taken in my car and does the sandwich no justice.

Nothing spectacular but decent food. Extremely friendly staff. BBQ was decent but the dumplings were extremely good. Reasonably priced.

Just okay. Ate worse, had much better. Place could use a swarm of hamdymen to arrive and commence to being handy for a few days/weeks.

Henry James Bar B Que is serving excellent Lexington-style barbecue, so just ignore the 1980s decor…read moreas it adds to the charm and I'm sure keeps the prices down. We tried a chopped plate and a coarse-chopped plate, both with red slaw and fries. We also received a small tray of excellent hushpuppies that were hot and obviously right out of the fryer. I received a very large serving of finely chopped, moist, and flavorful pork. It was excellent and a great value, given the serving size. My dining companion received an even larger serving of the coarse chopped pork. I got to try a bite, but I preferred the chopped pork. The red slaw was finely chopped and very tasty. It was somewhat tame compared to other variations of red slaw that definitely have a little kick, like at Whispering Pines in Albemarle. The crinkle-cut fries were not quite hot and moderately crispy but were upstaged by the rest of the meal. It's all counter service at Henry James, but everyone was very friendly and genuinely trying to provide great customer service. When I look at the quality of the food, the large portions, and the incredibly reasonable prices, Henry James Bar B Que is a winner. Highly recommended!

Her drink recommendations were spot-on--thoughtful, tailored, and clearly backed by real knowledge of her craft. You can tell she takes pride in what she does, and it shows in every detail, from presentation to taste. Even during busy moments, she never seemed rushed or overwhelmed--just focused, friendly, and completely in control. What stood out most, though, was her attitude. My first time here and I came in through the side door by mistake so that killed first impressions…read more Plus you can tell this place has been around for many years so either the food is good or they give you huge servings. It's hardly ever both in my experience. Service met the expectation. She was attentive and kept my drink full. I ordered Chicken Pie or Chicken Casserole (I'm honestly not sure what the difference is. It's a LOCALS favorite, not found in surrounding cities. I think some places call it pie and others call it casserole and I've even seen both items on the same menu). It may have been either the last serving left, scraped off the edges of the pan or it was made on a previous date and re-heated. The same with the mashed potatoes. There were hard crunchy bits of potatoes like it had been sitting out for a day or so and I got the scrapings from the side of the pan. They were not fresh. The gravy wasn't bad. The green beans were straight out of a can and seasoned with bacon or some kind of pork. They served both biscuits and cornbread. I took a bite out of the biscuit and didn't eat the cornbread. From the outside, I thought this was going to be different than what I saw on the inside. They serve breakfast here too and from the reviews and pictures, looks like breakfast may be what keeps this place open. Or the desserts. They do have a huge selection of desserts at the front entrance and they looked good. I don't think I'll be back. Not because of the service but because of quality and cleanliness.

I have never been treated so badly as a customer at a locally owned establishment…read more I ordered a Double Cheeseburger "Carolina Style" with Onion Rings and a sweet tea. The person taking the order asks "what size?" I repeated my order, the dbl cheeseburger Carolina style. She asks, "what toppings?" I say, Chili, slaw, mustard and onions. She says back something but I couldn't understand what she was saying but I heard her say "pineapple". So I repeated the toppings again. She wraps uo the order and I get my food and head home. When I open the cheeseburger, it's just a soggy mess and I see pineapple chunks. I don't understand how pineapple got into the equation but pineapple is what she was determined to give me. I drive back to the restaurant and at the window, the same girl (tattoos all over with pimple patches on her face) who gave me the order greeted me. I said, my order was prepared incorrectly with pineapple on the burger but that's not what I ordered. She says, "You said pineapple". I said, "No, I ordered "Carolina Style and repeated the toppings three times." She grabs the bag and says "you don't need to have an attitude". I said, "I don't have an attitude, I would just like it remade". She says, "that's not a problem, we were gonna remake it for you but you dont have to have an attitude!" The window closes and as I sat there waiting, I call the restaurant and ask to speak to the manager. The woman they put on the phone asks how can she help. I tell her I'm in the drive thru returning an order where pineapple was put on the burger and she interrupts me stating she was the one who took my order and that I had said pineapple and that she is remaking the order herself and it will be a few minutes. I tried to let her know about the conversation with the girl at the window and how she told me I have an attitude. The manager repeats herself again stating the order is being remade and it will be out soon. I thanked her and just waited on the food. A different girl hands me the bag. I check it and they still didn't get it right, leaving off the mustard but at this point I'm not going to say anything in fear of how I'd be treated. So I went home and the more I thought about it, thought these unprofessional types probably spit in my food so I just threw the burger away. The onion rings were dripping in grease and the batter was falling off and they were just soggy fried onions soaked in grease. I will never spend another penny here and after reading other reviews, it sounds like a common issue. My advice: Maybe you need to get a new intercom/speaker/microphone system so people can hear orders correctly and spend some time training your staff on professionalism, customer service and quality.
