This restaurant is more of a diner/meat & 3 place than it is a true NC BBQ joint - but the Lexington style barbecue served here isn't half bad. There was a location in Greensboro about 10 years back which had some of the worst food, BBQ and otherwise, I had encountered outside a 3rd World Country - it closed to popular approval years age. This is the original, and the food served here is nice - not blow your socks off great, but nice. The Chili Dog has a generous amount of rich, flavorful chili. The wiener is decent, the bun soft - this is a pretty good dog - I'd definitely order again. The Chopped BBQ Sandwich is of good size, and the pork is tender, moist, and clean of debris. This is Lexington style so the sauce is mild, and a touch on the sweet side, and the slaw is the red BBQ Slaw typical of the area - they make a good combination here. I'd also order the BBQ sandwich again. Folks are friendly here - owner thanks you for your business, which is a nice touch. 3 meals a day here, with breakfast and lunch pretty active times. And they have a Drive Thru, as well.

Lunch: Chicken n dumplings with hushpuppies and collards. so comforting on a cold day!

The chopped BBQ was very good. Different kind of coleslaw, ketchup based sauce, but pretty tasty. Definitely recommend.

Our order was taken and food prepared as we moved down the line towards the cashier. The food was absolutely delicious! The jumbo smoked wings were the BEST wings I've had in a long time. So good that we ordered wings to go as well. The turkey sandwich with slaw and pickles was really good! I usually don't eat slaw but it was good. The thick slices of turkey were juicy! We were surprised to see a bologna sandwich on the menu and had to order it.. and WOW.. it was delicious! A bologna sandwich with mustard, slaw, chili and onions.. The gouda Mac n cheese..DELISH! They offer an array of delicious sauces. This establishment is pretty big, it was nice and clean, including the bathroom. They also have a bar.

The restaurant looks new and it's very clean and organized. The staff are super helpful and friendly. You can actually smell the smokers from outside when you pull up and that's a great sign to me that the meats will have that delicious Smokey flavor. I have tried their Brisket, Jalapeño Smoked Sausage, Pulled Pork and Smoked Turkey. All of their meats are delicious and have great flavor, and I highly recommend the Brisket. Their sides aren't bad either. I've tried the Mac n Cheese, Baked Beans, Greens and Coleslaw. I enjoyed them all but I think the Baked Beans need more meat and BBQ sauce in them IMO. Their sauces are especially yummy. Try all of them and pick your favorite. I would recommend this restaurant to any visitors in town who are wanting good BBQ.

We tried a chopped plate and a coarse-chopped plate, both with red slaw and fries. We also received a small tray of excellent hushpuppies that were hot and obviously right out of the fryer. I received a very large serving of finely chopped, moist, and flavorful pork. It was excellent and a great value, given the serving size. My dining companion received an even larger serving of the coarse chopped pork. I got to try a bite, but I preferred the chopped pork. The red slaw was finely chopped and very tasty. It was somewhat tame compared to other variations of red slaw that definitely have a little kick, like at Whispering Pines in Albemarle. The crinkle-cut fries were not quite hot and moderately crispy but were upstaged by the rest of the meal. It's all counter service at Henry James, but everyone was very friendly and genuinely trying to provide great customer service. When I look at the quality of the food, the large portions, and the incredibly reasonable prices, Henry James Bar B Que is a winner. Highly recommended!

As for the barbecue, it was quite good. Certainly plenty of it though I found it a little salty and needing the sauce just a bit. Not great, but very good. I enjoyed it. The cole slaw was nicely chopped and very moist. I thoroughly enjoyed this meal and would get lunch from Henry James again. [Review 15003 overall, 505 of 2021, number 2865 in North Carolina.]

Well, I didn't have a great experience here yesterday, sadly, I had to drive over an hour for a DMV…read moreappointment, so I looked online and this place was highly rated. I had already chosen my "carved turkey Reuben sandwich", yum, when I first went at around 12:30-the line was out the door, so went to my appointment, hoping I could get back by the 230 close time. Returned at about 215 yay, and happily walked right up to the counter to order my lunch, when I was told they were out of carved turkey (the way the server explained it sounded like an ingredient in the Reuben was out, not the actual turkey. I asked if the "simple turkey sandwich" had carved turkey, and I was told no, it was deli meat-deli meat is so processed and unhealthy. I was super disappointed. So I opted for a Smashburger after asking how they liked it and she said it was "delicious". Well, it's not a Smashburger. It's a double burger on a nothing special bun. I was going to take the bun off and eat it with a knife and fork, and I was looking for those yummy crispy edges on a authentic Smashburger. They didn't exist. This was a double cheeseburger with very thick patties. I think they were grass fed so kudos to them for that,, but it was incredibly dry sadly, and when I saw that the bun had been toasted with butter, I put it back on and had a couple more bites, but was super disappointed-and trust me nobody loves a great cheeseburger more than I but now I love smash burgers as well!. I also ordered the Orzo cucumber and feta salad (as well as the french fries) on the side and while it was OK, it was nothing special. French fries were just meh. After all the stellar reviews I had I was very surprised that they would make a double cheeseburger and call it a Smash-burger-I wish these restaurants would stop doing that, it's misleading, other restaurants do this too. And for the money I spent, I should've just gone to Shake shack! I DO think it's worth a second chance, and I will say everybody there was very kind on the Service level and it's an adorable, really beautiful spot and vibe ! I strolled around and looked at the merchandise afterwards. So hopefully I'll be back but just super disappointed I didn't have a nice meal and left hungry.

It's hardly ever both in my experience. Service met the expectation. She was attentive and kept my drink full. I ordered Chicken Pie or Chicken Casserole (I'm honestly not sure what the difference is. It's a LOCALS favorite, not found in surrounding cities. I think some places call it pie and others call it casserole and I've even seen both items on the same menu). It may have been either the last serving left, scraped off the edges of the pan or it was made on a previous date and re-heated. The same with the mashed potatoes. There were hard crunchy bits of potatoes like it had been sitting out for a day or so and I got the scrapings from the side of the pan. They were not fresh. The gravy wasn't bad. The green beans were straight out of a can and seasoned with bacon or some kind of pork. They served both biscuits and cornbread. I took a bite out of the biscuit and didn't eat the cornbread. From the outside, I thought this was going to be different than what I saw on the inside. They serve breakfast here too and from the reviews and pictures, looks like breakfast may be what keeps this place open. Or the desserts. They do have a huge selection of desserts at the front entrance and they looked good. I don't think I'll be back. Not because of the service but because of quality and cleanliness.

Large menus also give me the impression everything can't be great. My son ordered the kids spaghetti with French fries. He like the spaghetti it was seasoned well however his French fries came out cold. My daughter got fish and chips her French fries were hot my son stole some of hers. She didn't like the hush puppies said they were too hard. They were fried a little harder than she was use to. The coleslaw had great flavor but looked like it was sent thru a blender and gave it a weird texture. My husband also got the fish and chips had the same complaint about the coleslaw didn't like the texture. I got a breakfast sausage plate. It looked like it was made in house I didn't ask but it was delicious. Eggs were cooked perfectly nice and fluffy with cheese and the grits cooked well needed a dash of salt but that is my preference. Everything was good not great. Personally would we come back, but not at a first choice. But if you're in the area looking for a quick diner that is priced well I would suggest it to others.

I have never been treated so badly as a customer at a locally owned establishment…read more I ordered a Double Cheeseburger "Carolina Style" with Onion Rings and a sweet tea. The person taking the order asks "what size?" I repeated my order, the dbl cheeseburger Carolina style. She asks, "what toppings?" I say, Chili, slaw, mustard and onions. She says back something but I couldn't understand what she was saying but I heard her say "pineapple". So I repeated the toppings again. She wraps uo the order and I get my food and head home. When I open the cheeseburger, it's just a soggy mess and I see pineapple chunks. I don't understand how pineapple got into the equation but pineapple is what she was determined to give me. I drive back to the restaurant and at the window, the same girl (tattoos all over with pimple patches on her face) who gave me the order greeted me. I said, my order was prepared incorrectly with pineapple on the burger but that's not what I ordered. She says, "You said pineapple". I said, "No, I ordered "Carolina Style and repeated the toppings three times." She grabs the bag and says "you don't need to have an attitude". I said, "I don't have an attitude, I would just like it remade". She says, "that's not a problem, we were gonna remake it for you but you dont have to have an attitude!" The window closes and as I sat there waiting, I call the restaurant and ask to speak to the manager. The woman they put on the phone asks how can she help. I tell her I'm in the drive thru returning an order where pineapple was put on the burger and she interrupts me stating she was the one who took my order and that I had said pineapple and that she is remaking the order herself and it will be a few minutes. I tried to let her know about the conversation with the girl at the window and how she told me I have an attitude. The manager repeats herself again stating the order is being remade and it will be out soon. I thanked her and just waited on the food. A different girl hands me the bag. I check it and they still didn't get it right, leaving off the mustard but at this point I'm not going to say anything in fear of how I'd be treated. So I went home and the more I thought about it, thought these unprofessional types probably spit in my food so I just threw the burger away. The onion rings were dripping in grease and the batter was falling off and they were just soggy fried onions soaked in grease. I will never spend another penny here and after reading other reviews, it sounds like a common issue. My advice: Maybe you need to get a new intercom/speaker/microphone system so people can hear orders correctly and spend some time training your staff on professionalism, customer service and quality.
