After getting tattoos (My first! Thanks Ty!) Me and my friend were in the mood to chill out. After passing up a few spots, we stumbled upon Ranoush. It wasn't overly crowded and had food! Stepping inside, you immediately get into the Middle Eastern vibe from the wonderfully decorated interior. Even on a semi-packed Saturday night the bathrooms were very clean, which always gives me confidence in the rest of the establishment. The only negative I have is that it became quite warm after hanging out for awhile. We visited Ranoush twice (within 48hrs), and both of our servers Ben and Brandon were excellent. Both were very attentive, patient, and extremely friendly. On our second visit I was in a bit of a rush to get to the airport and Brandon totally hooked it up. I have never had food delivered so fast at a sit down restaurant. Thanks Brandon! The Food - On our first visit we ordered stuffed grape leaves, hummus, and the mixed meat plate. We also ordered the Tropical Fruit and Mango Peach Hookah. Our hummus with olive oil was yummy. In fact, it made it into my all time top 5 yummy. It was creamy and buttery but not too smooth. (I like a little texture to my hummus! I'm a crunchy over creamy peanut butter kinda guy). The mixed meat platter was excellent and the chicken included was a standout. That had to be the tenderest, juiciest, most flavorful chicken I have ever had. My friend agreed too! Place the mixed meat plate on your "must have" list when visiting. We agreed that between Tropical Fruit and Mango Peach, the Mango Peach Hookah was the tastiest. On our second round we pretty much kept to what we ordered on the first visit, with the addition of cinnamon coffee to warm us up while we sat outside. The mixture of cinnamon and coffee packed quite a punch (smell and taste) and kept us warm while reminisced about old times. Great service, good food, and a very nice laid back atmosphere. I don't have a significant amount of experience with Mediterranean food, but I really enjoyed everything I ate here. The babaganoush was outstanding and the beef Shwarma was tender and well seasoned. The service here was quick and our server was really helpful in all the questions we had about the menu. We went on a Monday night so the restaurant was really quiet, but the food served timely, and we were in and out in a timely manner. The atmosphere is about what I would expect at a Mediterranean restaurant, very authentic across the board. I'll definitely be back to try some other menu items. read more

I've had a lot of good Arab food (Dearborn, Michigan, Jerusalem, villages in the Gaillee), and it's something I miss so much that I stopped trying places like this in St. Louis due to the expectation of gross disappointment. Friends dragged me to Ranoush. Great surprise! I'm almost willing to shout All-e-que-fak! Falafel, hummous, tabouleh, pita, were all excellent. Been there twice now, and have always left satisfied. Sandwich was superb. Accessories are always good. Only the prepared, elaborate entree I tried at dinner was a bit of a let-down. But that's ok. This was one of the first places that I went to on the Loop with a friend years ago. We thought we would try it out and I've been wanting to come back ever since. Which, I have come back another two or three times since then. But since I can't remember all the food, I'll just give details about the most recent dishes that I've had. This place offers some good and I mean really good food. I went with the chicken shawarma and was very impressed. The chicken came with a Syrian side salad that was huge. I ended up filling up on the salad and taking most, if not all, of the chicken home for later. The salad itself was very flavorful. It was very refreshing with the dressing used for the salad. Plus the fresh vegetables on the salad made it that much better. The chicken had really good flavor as well and was delicious both in restaurant and reheated for food the next day. My friend and I also split an appetizer. We got the spicy potatoes, I don't remember the name of the actual dish. Those were good too. The potatoes had really good flavor on them and an after-kick for that spicy effect that I don't mind. The potatoes came out with a flat pita bread that I just put the potatoes on to eat because I don't know if you are suppose to do that or not. It tasted good either way that you should do it. Service is always friendly and attentive. The servers are always helping customers and are able to explain when you don't understand what something is. They have hookah here and I always saw two people carrying everything or one person making two trips. They were trying to be careful with the coals, which is a huge burn risk, so kudos to them for knowing that. I went with a large group once and the servers that we had were really kind and got everything out in a timely manner. Clearly I have a lot of positives to say and I would tell people to give this place a chance. The food is very good and not to tourist-like for a change. Really good Mediterranean food on the Loop. The hummus was really great with chickpeas and olive oil on top. The vegetarian platter was really good, my favorite included dishes were the babaganoush which had great flavor and the batata harra, which is spicy potatoes with coriander, garlic, and red peppers. One of the best dishes I've had here has to be the Batenjaan bil Foren, which is baked eggplant with onions, peppers, and a tomato sauce, which is just so good. The service is actually really great for being on the Loop and their lunch specials are awesome, the amount of food as dinner (which are already huge portions) for only $7.95. MMM MMM MMM... The food here is really good! The hummus for $5.75 was incredible, the flavors were just right and the helping was pretty big. The Shish Tawuk which is a chicken kebab costs $15.50. It seems a little pricey but it came with a salad and pita bread. Can't go wrong with this dish if you have no experience with Middle Eastern food. It seriously tastes so good. I also really loved the tahini and garlic sauces that came with it. Only complaint here regarding food is that the pita bread is a little flat and I'm a little perplexed that rice couldn't be substituted for the pita bread. Maybe I should've just asked but I just didn't see any indication on the menu at all that they even served rice here. As for the service, we were seated right away by the hostess and our server was really friendly and present. The only thing was that it was getting a little busy and it took her awhile to give us our check while she was doing her rounds for the customers in the patio. Went here for lunch recently and it was a great change of pace--had a falafel sandwich with a salad and green mint tea, a very good lentil soup was served as a complimentary starter. The sandwich is not on the menu, in fact they don't appear to have a lunch menu but they do have lunch specials. The falafel sandwich was good, it was served as a wrap in foil and cut in half in the middle. There was garlic mayo on the side which went great with the sandwich. The salad was ok, it was mainly lettuce, cucumber and tomato served on a rather large bed of lettuce. Service was very good, and the interior decor is intriguing, a luxurious tent-like atmosphere with a large mural of a street scene on one wall. Also two very large video screens playing mid-eastern music videos. I was here (and also at the now-closed Kirkwood location) for dinner a long time ago and the food was as good although the nighttime ambience is very different. read more

Went here a lovely afternoon with my mother and the two kiddies. Quite cozy (small) and dimly lit. I ordered the vegetarian platter wich offers hummus, babaganoush, a parsley and tomato (very, very little tomato) salad, and two falafel, and of course pita. The hummus and babaganoush were yummy and I enjoyed mixing the parsley salad in with it. My falafel would have been good too but I didnt enjoy the way the outside tasted. They serve a very refreshing mint tea which I'd enjoyed unsweetened. Surprised that they did not have any Persian tea. My mother ordered the chicken shawarma. We stumbled across this place on a date night in U City, and we loved it! We ordered the Ranoush mixed grill and the traditional mezza for two. The waiter threw in some basmati rice for good measure. My favorite dishes were the Kibbeh and the hummus (awesome hummus). My wife's favorite was the falafel. The service was excellent. The atmosphere was fun. When it comes to restaurants in the Loop I always find myself looking for something that stands out and I will enjoy coming back to. Since eating in the Loop I never expect anything to be empty or fast. So with that in mind I never mind a wait and just enjoy the company I am with as I wait for food. Saleem's has a great selection of food to choose from and since I was eating with a group of friends, we all sampled from each other's plate. A great veg friendly restaurant. We have not been here in a while and I HAVE NO IDEA WHY! The food was so incredible! We started out with the Warnek Inab (stuffed grape leaves-$5.50) and even took a few home because there we so many...then followed it up with the heavenly Moutabal (baba ganoush-$5.50) I have never had a more dreamy creamy baba in my life! It comes served on a big lettuce leaf accompanied by a large basket of pita bread. If you get anything at Ranoush-get the baba!! The Man had Chicken Shawarma (grilled chx veggies on pita-$13.50) and he really liked it. must have- finished it all! I stick with the plants, so I ordered a salad: Fatoush ($6). It was HUGE! Beautiful greens, onion, radish (If you are not a fan of the radish, don't be scared...you really cannot taste them) and cut up toasted pita all mixed in a sumac dressing. This is their house and it is very tasty. And, for dessert, which BTW we did not order, but came complimentary: watermelon! Perfect ending to a great meal. Drinks: I had the Sav. I've been hoping to find a good place for Middle-Eastern food. I'm still looking but this place is the best I've found so far. I had the falafel. It was alright but a bit crunchier/crispier than I like. I prefer mine a little more moist. Also it was served cold, which I don't think is quite right. I also got the Mezze for two thing and that was pretty good. You get a little of the falafel as well as hummus (really good) and tabouleh (also pretty good). The service was good and I liked the space but the food wasn't what it could have been. If anyone knows a better option, I'd love to know about it. read more

I'm a fan of Ranoush. It's good that there's a more upscale Middle Eastern restaurant on the Loop, more than just a falafal/shwarma shack. It's not perfect, but it's a good place to stop in for a casual lunch or dinner if you're looking for some great Middle Eastern flavors. If you're not super familiar with Middle Eastern food, definitely try one of the traditional mezzas for two. You get a great selection of lots of their smaller plates, so you can figure out what you like and what you don't. The last time I went we tried the vegetarian mezza and loved it, even though no one in my party is a vegetarian. The falafel is particularly good, as was the baba ganoush (nice and smokey from the roasted eggplant). I'm now a huge fan of their labneh, a yogurt sauce that goes great with everything. I also tried the Shish Tawuk and loved it. The chicken had been marinated in a really flavorful citrus sauce and the meat was really tender. The main meals come with a garlic paste that is incredibly strong but amazingly delicious. DO NOT eat this sauce if you need to have nice breath for the rest of the day, it will stick with you for a long time. If you like garlic though, it's fantastic. My biggest gripe about Ranoush is that their pita bread isn't very good. It's bland, thin, and often really dry. Since most of their dishes are served with or on this bread, it dampers how good the rest of the food can be. It's really too bad, because I can't imagine it's that hard to make good pita bread. read more

Yum, yum, yum. Ranoush was introduced to us as a favorite spot of some of our St. Louis-ian friends, and it didn't disappoint. We stopped in here for lunch on the same weekend as the Loop's Ice Festival, which was looking like it'd make finding a quick-ish lunch spot a task, but we were seated immediately at Ranoush. I was kind of surprised but the number of strollers and young kids that were eating here. Might have been because of the Ice Festival, but still - neat that it's family-friendly. The four of us split the hummus appetizer, of which there was plenty. On the advice of our friends, husband and I ordered the Shawarma platter to share. The flavor was excellent and there was plenty for both of us, especially after the hummus. But the most delicious part was their garlic mayo sauce. Positively infused with garlicky goodness but not in a way that makes you want to chew on toothpaste (even if you should), instead in a way that somehow melts in your mouth and covers each taste bud with a velvety texture. I hear they have belly dancers on the weekends during dinner. TL;DR - Great portion sizes and try the garlic mayo sauce stuff. read more

Located in the middle of the loop it's a prime spot to enjoy the scenery and people watch. Every few weekends they have a belly dancer which adds to the overall ambiance. Lots of tasty and diverse options for vegetarian and vegans, but also plenty to satisfy the omnivore. The chicken schwarma was amazing but a bit greasy. The good portions are generous but I guess they're not huge when you look at the price. It's a bit steep in that department but I guess you're paying for authenticity? I rather enjoyed this one. The food was pretty good, but probably not a 5. A good solid 4 is probably accurate I would say. However, their service pushed it up 1. I asked for some hot sause and he went and made some since none was at hand. Also, I didn't want dessert, but they brought out a free piece because I had never tried it. As far as food, it's solid. The menu isn't the biggest, but there is enough variety for most pallettes. For people who aren't that familiar wit medeteranian stle food, don't expect heavy seasonings. It can be a bit bland (but tasty) for those who are expecting something more spice laden. (Hence my request for lebanese hot sauce). Give it a try, I think you'll enjoy it. read more

Food was great, service not so much. I was dining alone so was placed in a small room that was more like a hallway with one other table and a larger room in the back that held a single large table. Defnitely out of the mainstream. A waiter arrived promptly and took my order for appetizer and entree. After a bit of a wait, both showed up at once. My appetizer was grape leaves so not the end of the world but not exactly what I wanted either. Chicken shwarma was tasty with a nice garlicky sauce. The accompanying salad was pretty good but the dressing as a bit heavy. Grape leaves were good but again, a little heavy with some kind of dressing. When it came time for the check, my waiter finally came by and brought me the check when asked. We went for the lunch buffet on Saturday. It was not a top kind of buffet but I should say it was ok. Especially if you like Middle East food and you like Persian like us, it is a place with closest taste to the food that you are looking for. The rice was good. There were a few stews which tasted good and the quality was good. The eggplant stew was a favorite for my friends but personally I am not a fan of eggplant!! Don't look for kebab at the buffet menu. My wife and I were in town for our annual getaway and this year it was St. Louis. Both of us come from Mediterranean and Middle Easter background where a lot of the food is similar and each country in that area like to add their own twist, so when it came to trying the Syrian end of the table, we were all up for it. Nestled in The Loop, Ranoush offers great food, a great atmosphere with great sights and smells along with a belly dancer. While the presence of a belly dancer always makes one blush, it did round out the atmosphere and almost would have been wrong had there not been one. Unlike most belly dancers I have encountered, she was quick to know which tables were into it and which were not and did not give anyone that uncomfortable feeling of where do I look and should I make eye contact, etc... Since it was a very cold and windy night, I started off with the hot mint tea. Served in your own personal teapot on top of a unique hot plate and accompanied by the traditional small glass tea cup, it hit the spot in the gullet and warmed me up efficiently. My wife and I shared the house made pita with the Labneh. I think we confused ourselves thinking it was going to be the Syrian version of the Greek tsaziki I grew up with, but it was not the same although it was delicious. I later turn over the menu and on the back side was the version I was looking for. Perhaps the next time we drive on through, I will have to try it. My wife had the chicken shwarma and I had the beef. Each was served with an overflowing salad that could have been cut in half. I don't like it when my food is overflowing and falling off my plate onto the table and then I can not eat it. The chicken was tender and the beef was tasty and quality products were used. They did not have to rely on over spicing the foods because the natural flavors of the poultry and meat spoke for themselves. Our server did a wonderful job although he was absent at times. I saw this happen a few other tables as well with other servers. I think too many smoke breaks are given and tables are left hanging. But all this was not that big of a deal because the food and the wait was worth it. The owner/manager came over to us to see how we were enjoying the food and it was nice to know she cared about her customers and her product. If you want to take a magic carpet ride to the Middle East, take a seat in the back room lined with pillows and blankets and I am assuming a few carpets as well and enjoy Ranoush. read more

I came here on a Saturday night around 7:30pm with one other person. They were a bit busy so we sat at the bar for 15 minutes while waiting for a table. They staff were friendly and gave us water and a menu to look at while we waited and were very apologetic for how long it was taking. I ordered the Beef Shawarma (I get that too often but I just love it), and my companion ordered the Batenjaan bil Foren, which was a baked eggplant dish. We got our food in good time and we were both very pleased. The food was delicious. I loved the garlic sauce that came with my beef, and his eggplant was so rich and complex. Towards the middle of our dinner, a belly dancer came out to perform, which was great and really added to the already ethnic atmosphere. The music was awesome. The prices are decent and the food is good quality, but things would have gotten pretty expensive had we not stuck to just our entrees. Appetizers + drinks + entrees would have put this in the $60+ range for two people. Just an FYI. If I ever go there again, I would love to try out their late night hookah.
