I loved my experience at Rapunzel Rapunzel! I went in to get some highlights and I was attracted to the salon because of their offering of semi natural dyes. I walking in around 2:30 on a Saturday, drenched in sweat from the gym and a heatwave, but Marc still took me in right away! When my hair was dried at home there were a few streaks that were too blonde so I went back and they took me in again and fixed it up to perfection in less than 10 minutes! Not your typical salon, very basic but run by true Brooklynites who mostly work with returning customers of 20 years. For my highlights it cost $120, which can't be beat in NY! I am a little high maintenance about my curls but I cannot afford those Deva cuts or any other "specialty" ritzy salons. Get Rose to cut your hair. Ever since I discovered this place, I have gone three of four times for a cut and she always gives my hair exactly the cut I described. I bring photos to show her and we talk about details that she gets clear with you before she begins (where the bulk of the volume sits, where the shortest layer is, etc). She works super efficiently so it's notl hard to squeeze an appointment into a day with other things going on. I also just love that this salon is on the casual side- it's not sparkling with shiny metal or over-bright with fluorescent lighting. It's got character and I feel very comfortable and spunky there. Ultimately, it's my fault for continuing to go back- they claim to be experts in curly hair, which is why I go, but it seems they are more interested in chatting than cutting hair. Rose at Rapunzel is the best!! I have curly hair and she does my color as well. She really is a master colorist and a curly expert! snd, I just found out she's fully vaccinated! My wife has short straight hair and comes out of the chair with sharp cuts too. Rapunzel had also adjusted really well to Covid. She has dividers up, cleans between every client, has UV C filters and great social distancing. I'm usually the only person there and theres never more than one other person. I have very curly hair and decided to get a haircut here after reading so many positive Yelp reviews from other curly girls. My old stylist who used the Devacurl method moved out of NYC and I refuse to go to Devachan because it's so expensive! Rose was easygoing and fun to talk to, but if you are looking for an actual curly cut, then this is not the place. She brushes out all of your curls and then cuts your hair while it is a massive poof ball. After, the assistant washes it, she puts product in, and sends you home. My hair was fine, it wasn't a disaster, but I know it could look a million times better with an actual curly cut, where the stylist cuts each curl instead of brushing them all out, and then after your wash they dry you with a diffuser or under a dryer and then check your curls again to make sure it looks good. I think after this mistake I'll just have to pay the higher prices elsewhere =( I hope this review is helpful to other curly girls! read more

Had the BEST curly haircut from Rose yesterday. I've never been able to find a stylist outside of one specific person at Devachan who would be able to cut my hair in the style I wanted and/or avoid cutting off all my hair. Rose did both in like 20 minutes!!! I couldn't believe how fast and as my hair air-dried on the way home I didn't know how it looked for a couple of hours. Somehow she managed to not only get the style and length right, but fixed the curls so they're shiny and perfectly shaped. I highly recommend her work! read more

I look forward to getting my haircut the way a 10-year old looks forward to going to the dentist. I hate making awkward conversation with the stylist, I hate how my nose always itches, I don't like the chemical smell. I went to Rapunzel because it is $48 for a wash-cut-blow-out, while most places in the Slope are $60+. The fabulous Arturo worked on my head, I told him I wanted a trim and to shape up the layers and he explained in detail what he planned to do and why, which was appreciated. I didn't have to worry about awkward conversation because Arturo just talked the whole time at about 3000 words per minute. I learned everything about this man, where he lives, how many times a year he makes pasta sauce, how Maggie Gyllenhaal always says hi when he sees her on the street... but he was so nice and hilarious I enjoyed every minute. The resulting cut is great as well, he kept the length but cleaned me up well, and the layers and texture are definitely a step up from my last cut. Arturo now has a monopoly on my head for as long as I live in the neighborhood! read more

OKIE, i don't yelp often anymore but now i have to because unfortunately this place didn't live up to the other reviews as i hoped. 1) i was looking for a salon that was midrange - not chinatown cheap , but not 80 for a cut.. this place was 50 - so i was expecting a decent experience. 2) i have short hair , and i'm very experimental with my cuts/color so very rarely am i completely dissatisfied with my cuts.. usually they are shorter than expected or maybe another "variation" of the picture i come in with, but generally i get like 80% of what i was expecting. i got rose the stylist. she's a friendly lady and totally nice, i just think she gets so busy that she doesn't pay attention during her consultation. She glanced at my pic, and told me she understood what i wanted - a choppy piecey short bob haircut. she washed my hair unthoroughly and not to mention that she also got water all over my right side. and i'm pretty sure she didn't condition it at all, and then i was walked over to her station. normally this doesn't bother me, but since my cut sucked too - this doesn't help the situation. and then comes the scissors - she starts cutting and i'm noticing that it's not going in the right "direction". but i figured she's got great reviews i should at least wait til it's blowdried or when she's done with the scissors. basically, instead of a piecey choppy bob haircut - i got this weird angled bob, mullet thing. i tell her that this isn't the picture.. and she then asks ME how to rectify it, and explains that "well, your hair's too short to achieve the longer pieces that are shown there".. uhhh.. well, considering she had already chopped off the hair, i'm sure i don't have the length NOW to have that cut. and then I HAD TO DIRECT her on how to fix the back of my head to avoid the mullet looking fiasco she made. she tells me that she misunderstood what i wanted with the picture ( which i don't understand how you can mistaken a picture) and then starts to tell me how "you know the best haircuts usually comes from mistakes" ... which is icing on top of the shitcake that is my hair. what i end up with is not what i wanted when i walked in and now i am scrambling to find another cut that will work with the length i have left. I'm not a bitch - i paid for the cut anyways, and now i'm heading to badlands to fix what she's started.. badlands is pricier but i know that they do a good job, i was just trying to give other salons a try in the area. lesson : don't cheat on your regular salon because you're trying to save some money. and i will say though - that the stylists were all really friendly, and it was amusing listening to the banter and conversations, but it's not worth a bad cut. sorry rapunzel.. i just had a crappy experience. read more

First off I was nearly 45 mins late to this appointment and was afraid that i would have to reschedule. It was a bit tricky for me to get there but really R train is ur best bet even if you have to travel through NYC. Ok so back to my experience... I have extremely curly hair like 3c-4a or as Rose put it a 9 from a scale of 1-10. When it comes to getting my hair cut, I dread it. I usually read all the reviews on a salon before making my choice. I choose this place both cause of the price and the positive reviews. I had set up my appointment with Mark and was nervous like crazy as the day drew near. Cause of the type of hair I have I'm super picky about who cuts it. I had this stylest from another salon I'd normally see but since she moved out of state it's been hard to see her when she was back in town. So for over a year I went with out cutting my hair. Also now I'm going to beauty school so I'm even more aware then I was before. I pay even more attention and ask more questions. Once I explained that to both Rose and Mark, it was like getting a curly lesson from both of them which I was thankful for. Mark listened to my concerns about not chopping off the length that I so desperately wanted to keep and both of them assured me I didn't have what I was told a "triangle shaped cut". He fixed and adjusted the shape without taking off much. In the end my hair looked amazing even later on when my classmates straighten out my hair. After a ridiculous amount of research, I nervously chose Rapunzel as the place for my long awaited (almost a year and a half) trim. I was really looking for somewhere that would meet the following criteria: -Under $50 (I only want a trim, and I'm just not willing to pay more for something that does not require that much time or expertise) -Stylists that listen to clients (I've been growing my hair long for my upcoming wedding, and I was really nervous about a stylist "ruining" the length by getting a little too carried away) -Knows curly hair (my hair is super curly and its always better to work with someone that knows how to cut it - or at least is aware of the differences between cutting curly and straight hair) Rapunzel was definitely the perfect place for me. I was able to get an appointment with Mark on the same day that I called. He was friendly but professionally, and listened to what I wanted while also giving me advice. He slightly restyled my hair and DEFINITELY got rid of all the split ends, but overall kept the length I wanted. My hair looks way healthier and better and I'm not worried at all about it being too short for the wedding. Even though I didn't want a blow dry, Mark still dried it slightly with the diffuser, which was nice because it was FREEZING today! The price for a women's cut is $48 (before tip) and all their prices are posted on the wall and on their website. This matters to me because there's no worrying or questioning how much the cut will be - its very clear and the stylists are very honest. I can't wait to return for my next cut and have Mark change it up a little bit.... I definitely recommend Rapunzel Rapunzel for those in the Park Slope area looking for an affordable, good haircut. read more

Curly Hair is nice and cute when done right but, as Rose put it, "curly haired little girls are treated like orphans." Being such a little girl, I learned to blow-dry and tame my hair with the advent of YouTube and Conair however, when you live in the frozen tundra of NY winters and the dry humid desert of NY summers, blow-drying can seem like cruel and unusual punishment just for being born with spiraled tresses. Twenty three years into a life of whipping my hair into a heated frenzy, I walked past Rapunzel Rapunzel while strolling through the Slope. I spotted the chalk board reading 'Curly Hair Expert' and decided to try it out but first I decided to check Yelp and saw the amazing reviews and Roses's amazing, un-NYC pricing ($48). Done and done. When I got there Rose sat me down and asked me what I wanted, I told her my curly hair confession and she got to teaching. She noticed that I used the curling iron to smooth my hair and create banana-curl-esque waves. Then she said the magic words, "I can show you how to do this without heat." I sat there befuddled. Smooth curls without heat?? Could it really be? After a dazzling cut, trimming the ends and shaping the frame of my heart/round shaped face with cascading layers, Rose began what she named "My Mermaid Session." Without even realizing it, I had been making my hair like a Mermaids' for years but, it took nearly an hour every morning holding a curling iron upside down in front of a mirror (with countless hickey looking burns on my neck to prove it). After explaining the products she used and the technique of twisting my hair, in less than 10 minutes, she let me sit to see for myself how it came out. I couldn't believe my eyes, my hair looked better than when I used the heat and for the first time since high school, I walked out onto concrete without using a curling iron or blow dryer. While my Mermaid session was mind-blowing and Rose has singlehandedly changed my day-to-day routine, it was the whole atmosphere of Rapunzel Rapunzel that made me write this 5+ star review. It is a cozy little shop that gives the feel of a hometown beauty salon with the quality of a ritzy NYC salon. I don't see any reason to use any other salon for as long as I live in New York. Honestly, the cuts are fantastic (everyday I realize more and more how perfect a cut Rose gave me), the staff is beyond friendly and funny, the price is unbeatable and the location is perfect for Brooklynites and not too bad for a trip out from Manhattan. Sent my husband here for a reconnaissance mission, i.e, we're new to the area, and I wanted to see how they did with a simple, easy cut. Sadly, not well. My husband had longish, wavy hair that he asked to keep in a somewhat messy, longer style. Rose basically gave him a bowl cut with a military buzz on the bottom. He said she did the whole cut with clippers, and it was like she was racing against the clock. The cut is not flattering, and worse, it will take months to grow out and be able to get it fixed because of how ridiculously short she cut it. Not good. Definitely will not be returning. read more

I'd like to give this place two and a half stars. Just a meh hair cut bordering on bad. My hair was cut wet so my bangs are 3x shorter than I like, I look like I have a bowl cut. I asked for some layers and for some thinning out. I don't think either happened although she kept saying she did. And it's just a weird cut. It doesn't lie right and it's just not working. As soon as I got home I had to rewash my hair. She just slopped shampoo and conditioner on my scalp and sprayed it off. The hair cut took a half hour. I felt rushed the entire time. I lost all this weight and I was so looking forward to a cute summer look. What I got is a bland weird bob with super short bangs. Hopefully it'll grow out and I can find another place to get it cut. For $48 it's a bargain but I left with wet unstyled hair, that I had to wash and redo when I got home. And now I'll have to pay again in a few weeks to get a more stylish hair cut. If you are looking for a trim or just maintaining a look. I'd go. But to create a new look....I'm going somewhere else. read more

I recently cut 10 inches off of my hair to donate, and I definitely didn't like my hair short. I felt like I needed bangs to fix the situation until my hair could grow back. Do you know how hard it is to find someone that cuts bangs well? It's nearly impossible. They either cut them crooked, or too short, or make a variety of other mistakes that make you regret you ever wanted bangs. Despite this fear, I knew I needed the bangs. Rapunzel had good reviews, and it was two blocks away, so I gave it a try. Arturo is a bang master! Yes, he's talkative. No, it's not a quick experience. No, you can't understand most of what he says. But is he a master stylist that knows exactly what he's doing? YES! The man is a skilled artisan! He gave me the best bangs I have ever had. I could not be happier with my hair right now! As a side note: $10 for bangs is a great price, considering most places only charge $10 for a trim, and it's $20 and up for bang "styling". Great meeting Marc the master colorist. I am generally very apprehensive to have people color my hair since it is super dark but I put my hair in the trustful hands of Marc. I got a beautiful end result. I Usually don't write Yelp reviews even if requested but I had to immediately write this review right after the color while sitting in the salon!! My advice: know your curl type, come in with reference pics, and don't be afraid to tell them exactly what you want as they're going. I have a thick mass of loose curls that I'm very protective of. I've gone to higher-end salons where there's more ego than stylist, telling me to "keep an open mind" or "try something new" and then they'd cut my hair wet and blow dry it straight to look like everyone else. I told Rose what I wanted, showed her a few reference photos, and within 20 minutes she gave me just that. She cut my curls dry, then asked me what kind of products I used at home so she could wet my hair and actually style it how I would on a normal day (which I've *never* been asked at a salon before, what a concept). I swear I was in and out in under 40 minutes. She's no-nonsense with her cuts, doesn't get scissor-happy, and tells you what she's doing as she does it. I recently moved to Park Slope and naturally was in search of a great new hair salon. In preparation, I read almost every yelp review on every salon in Park Slope and decided on Rapunzel Rapunzel. Well, that was easy- I'm never going to another salon. Mark was wonderful, he trimmed my hair while still retaining the length and got rid of my nasty brassy highlights (replacing them with a much more natural mahogany)! I left the salon feeling like a new woman. Plus! The atmosphere is great and everyone is a pleasure to talk to. AND! Even after washing it and lazy-styling it myself, a coworker commented that she loved my hair; "the layers! You look like one of those hair commercial girls! It's so healthy". Indeed! I've had my hair cut and colored by both Rose and Mark. They're both great at what they do! Rose especially has an impressive, almost academic knowledge of her craft- she can tell you exactly why she's making all her decisions, from the chemical make up of the dye she uses, to the structure and proportions of various cuts. I can't believe I'm only first writing a review for my master colorist that I went to for so many years before leaving NY a few months ago. Rose is the BEST. Among other things I love that she was using organic products before organic was even a thing. Rose gave me a goody bag of color to leave town with in case I couldn't find a salon that carried these gentle products and I am so grateful for that because I am still using those products. Rose does wonderful hair cuts and wonderful color and walking into her friendly salon is like walking onto the set of Cheers where everyone knows your name.
