I'm happy with my haircut. Jason was my stylist. He was very nice and engaged in conversation. I'm always worried that they won't be able to do my fades correctly (salons tend to not know how to use clippers, barbers tend to make me masculine.) but Jason took the time to listen to me and asked me what type of fade and how I wanted the blending. He did a good job. The washing station is at the back of the salon and the shampoo was was good. Soft gentle head massage as she washed and it was pleasing. I didn't get her name but I will ask next time. My only complaint of this whole experience was the smell of the towels they used to wrap my hair in after washing... they smelled like mildew like they weren't properly dried after washing. I removed it from my head immediately and one of the ladies threw it in the hamper. Overall I am happy with my cut today and I might add that the entire service cost $25 so it was affordable! They do hair good, but i was just there today and they raised their prices due to "Covid" mean while it's been 2 years already since covid hit. My issue was more that they MADE me pay a tip to the hair washer while i already tipped the lady who blow dried and styled my actual hair, the same person could have done both, it wasn't my choosing to have to seperate people to wash and dry my hair Also TIPS ARE NOT MANDATORY! I think I can officially call this my go-to hair salon. I made the mistake of taking an easy route and visited a salon near my job. Let's just say, I had to come to Hair Culture a week later to fix the mess. Each time I'm here, I am reminded of the reason I go out of my way and take an additional 30 min bus ride. The service last time I was there was quick, easy, friendly, and 100% satisfactory - starting with the wash/massage with Cece (she's one of my favorites!) to the cut and dry with Leon (my first time with him. He's great.. works fast, precisely and confidently!! I would go back to him without question.. highly recommended) I must add, I went in looking for Sammy or Bobby. Both were out. But when Leon was working my brunettilocks, he said I can rest assured that all the stylists at the salon are very good and all have similar lengths of experience. Talk about team representation.. way to go, Leon! I agree with him. So far I've taken my chances with a few of the stylists there and I have not been disappointed. Don't let the pictures fool you. These people do not know anything about modern highlighting technique or balayage or blending. If you want zebra blonde stripes circa 1995, go for it. See pic- I now have to fix this myself, or at another salon. I suspect much of the issue lies in the fact that a) they clearly don't care about hair color education and b) there is a huge language barrier - I couldn't effectively communicate what I wanted (or rather, I did, but they didn't understand me) but I did show around 3 photos. They also have NO idea how to use the Olaplex system they advertise - step 2 is not a conditioner, but they apply it like one. They also massaged it into my neck and shoulders at the sink and I had to tell them to stop. It's not a body lotion, not a body oil, and I didn't request a massage. I just found this part invasive and unnecessary. Buyer beware - maybe they're ok for blowouts, but I'd never go back for color. read more

I rarely venture into hair salons like this due to too many bad experiences from my childhood. Circumstances forced my hand this time. So everyone on yelp said to go with Bobby. But I didn't find him in the salon that day (I came on a Wednesday afternoon) so I just took my chances and went with anyone. The lady who washed my hair was too rough and it just felt like she was scrubbing carelessly away - not happy about this. She also seemed like she was rushing... why?!?! There was no one else in the shop to be rushing for. Ugh! The lady who cut my hair did a decent job surprisingly! She took off two inches and gave me long layers - it turned out really well. What was not good was that she's really aggressive with the hair brush. It felt like she was yanking my hair out. Next, the hair brushes are so dirty with layers of other people's hair! Lastly, when she blow dried my hair, I felt she was burning my hair and my scalp. There literally was smoke coming from my hair. Overall, they get the job done but it isn't an enjoyable or relaxing experience . You have to tip twice - the lady who washes your hair and the person who cuts your hair. They will ask for it which is sooooo annoying (I think tipping is a privilege, not a right... anyway...) My cut cost me 20$ plus tip. 6$ for the lady who cut and 3$ for the lady who cleaned my hair. I don't know why I tipped so much when it wasn't deserved. I guess I'm just scarred from those many times where I've been chased down the street by a server because I didn't "tip enough". This place amazes me. I've run in for a quick wash & blow and they've always done a great job. I never trusted to get anything else done because their prices are pretty cheap and as the adage goes .... you get what you pay for. I tried a simple hair cut here once and loved it. I keep my hair in a short bob so they trimmed it, trimmed side bangs and added laters. It was a professional style salon hair cut for so much cheaper. I had a balayage done a while back and the color started getting unruly (some parts brassy, other parts way too blonde) and the color felt washed out. My usual spot was closed for a few days so I came here to try darkening (felt like going darker is a safer gamble at a new place than going lighter would be...) and I am so happy that I did. She sat with me and looked through photographs of the color I wanted to achieve. She never rushed me and took her time finding the right shade. Finally, we looked through the book together and I ended up combining two colors to get the shade of dark blonde/ash brown that I wanted my balayage to become. Perfection. I am soooo happy with it. The lady who blew it out did a wonderful job as well. I'm a little picky when it comes to blow outs (not straight, wavy, no curling irons and no C shaped curls, but nice bouncy volume) and she gave me exactly that. I can't recommend this place enough. The ladies who work here are absolute sweet hearts and even though English isn't their first language they will take their time, listen, view photos and be sure you're on the same page so you get what you want. I couldn't be happier with my results and I will definitely be back for hair maintenance :) read more

Ok...so I stroll in at 7:20...Granted that's not enough time to blow dry someone's hair right? To me it is I have the most complicated hair texture. My hair is super thin, it can get very curly but it can also get really straight. I walk in and asked if I could be serviced. No hesitation and was soon seated to wash. After wash I was asked to have a seat up front and waiting a mini second for the stylist to come. Her first approach to me was..."Are you cutting or what"? ....wait what is that how to talk to customers? She untangled my hair in the most harsh aggressive manner pulling and tugging like if her life depended on it. Ok am over that lets get started.... I asked her to cut my hair an inch She shows me a length of about three inches and asks if that's ok?? NO THATS TOO MUCH JUST ONE INCH PLEASE I originally came in looking for Bobby apparently he is the best but to my luck he want there. OK SO... I asked her to apply a lot of heat because my hair is really thin she says it's ok... I said no it's not I feel it's still wet and crinkled not fully dry please do more... I told her I would take pictures of the results after I stepped outside and here they are. I had long, thick hair and a sudden urge to cut it short for the spring. I came here on a whim because its close to my house and I pass by all the time. I am so glad I did because I got one of the best haircuts of my life. The woman washing my hair gave a scalp massage while I waited instead of just having me sit around and bobby (I think that's his name) asked me a lot of questions about what I wanted and clearly communicated that he would have to thin out my hair to give me a layered bob and what length it would be. I absolutely love it and I get a ton of compliments all the time. I can't say enough good things about the experience, the hair cut and the price- it was so inexpensive. ****EDIT I called, explained my situation and they told me they understood. I believe I was speaking to Bobby on the phone. He said there are two types of perms; a cold perm or a hot perm (digital perm). My hair type is not suited for the cold perm but I'm guessing the other workers did not realize. I did stress the whole day and spent a lot of time but they were very nice and patient about my situation.*** --- Non-edited review- I saw pretty good reviews so I decided to come here to get a perm for my long bob. They told me 2 hours but it took 4. I asked for the price and the ladies told me $120 when the sign says perms are $55-$110. I mentioned that and they said I would pay $110. I would get it if my hair was long but it's literally up to my neck. All I wanted for my perm was my ends curled in but they told me that wasn't really possible so I agreed on more curls and showed them a picture. I have super straight Asian hair so this was just to add more volume. My hair came out frizzy looking and not very close to my picture. The reviews I read mentioned that bobby was great but I didn't see him in the place until later so he didn't help me. I'm giving two stars because my hair did not come out as I wanted and I paid way too much for a short hair perm. The ladies probably had good intentions and they were really nice but other than that this was not a good experience for me. I could also tell that since I look younger they didn't really bother to give me any head massages like I saw in the reviews and saw the ladies give other older customers. Been coming here since 2011, after a botched job in a salon downtown. Bobby is the only stylist I trust, pretty much in all of Brooklyn! And has come to my rescue ever since. I can always count on his honesty, which means so much to me since I tend to go off the deep end with my crazy ideas and expectations. Even better, when I suddenly decide I want a super short cut, something extreme, he always asks if I'm sure and reminds me how much I love my long hair, the way I like it styled, Time it will take to grow etc so I can really consider if it's the risk I'm willing to take, which I love!!! He's so talented, really loves what he does, takes his time consulting and making sure it's the length/style you want. His hands are magic!! If you're like me, super picky, don't trust ANYONE with your hair (so at times you decide you might as well cut your own hair and be mad at yourself) then Bobby is your guy. This is a very clean salon. Not much decorating, but who cares, you are here to get a haircut. They do not sugar coat anything, they are down to business. They wash, cut, prim and make you pretty and you are out the door to enjoy the rest of your day. It's cheap, compared to the neighboring salons. Plus it's open 7 days from 9am-8pm. It was busy on a Saturday afternoon, but you did not have to wait long. I got a layered cut with side bangs and I wanted to get rid of the excessive weight of hair in the back of my head. The saying "you get what you pay for" has never been true. I was in such a hurry to get a haircut that I just walked in a salon that would take me without an appointment. BIG MISTAKE! If they don't have rush then that means they are not great. The shampoo part was when I realized I should have walked out. The shampoo lady scrubbed my scalp with her nails and didn't stop when I said 'OUCH'. Instead blabbers to the stylist in her language. The shampoo itself had weird plastic odor with mold on the dispenser. When the haircut started, I noticed she brushed my wet hair. Not a wide toothed comb. And the brush already had hair stuck on it from previous use. She didn't consult me, didn't ask what I wanted. I had to shout 'LAYERS' & 'Long Hair'. Throughout the cut she was talking to another stylist in her language. It could have been 'look, i got a dummy to practice'. The 'layers' were just randomly hair pulling in any direction and cutting. No precision, No checking or double checking and not gentle at all. Every time she combed, my scalp would burn because she was so rough and didn't care when I said it's hurting, she was busy chatting with other stylists. Maybe, I should have just turned my hair upside down and cut it on my own at home, like one of those Youtube tutorials. The worst part was that my hair was smelling by the end. I couldn't wait to get home and get in the shower. I am certain they don't clean the combs at all. If you are looking for cheap no frills hair cut, without caring how it looks because you just tie it up then go for it. At least, I didn't pay over $20 including tip. If you are looking for that salon experience where it makes you feel good about yourself for days to come and you wish you never have to wash your hair afterwards because of the fabulous blow dry and great smelling products, the soothing hair wash, possibly a massage while they wait for the conditioner to work, gentle friendly caring stylists who want to make you feel comfortable, then stay away from this place. I've been to this place so many times, before summer 2022 they used to charge me 35$ for wash and blow dry. I went on august 20th, and they upped the price and charged me $55. I didn't say anything that time. But today I went back I was given to one of the ladies in the front and I told the same thing I tell everyone else. I like to have my curled at the bottom with a blow dryer not flat iron. By her reaction I could immediately tell she probably didn't have much experience doing that so she decides to tell me that she is going to charge me 70$!!!!!! FOR A WASH AND BLOW DRY. I was so confused I told her I have never paid so high before. She kept telling me it was because of my "hair length" which made no sense because again I've been there before was never charged that price. I WAS THERE 2 WEEKS BEFORE AND WAS NOT CHARGED THAT. So after going back and forth a couple times, she decides she can charge me 60$ I said NO once again because now you're clearly just making up prices. She then tells me she can charge me 55$ instead but she's not going to do curls she is going to do it straight. I was so confused and frustrated. I just said that was fine because my hair was already washed and I was not leaving like that. So I meandered up 5th Ave and found this cute little place. The wash by this place was phenomenal. The woman who washed my hair could seriously get hired by me to wash my hair indefinitely. Omg it was so relaxing. And she like massaged my scalp and everything. I swear, if this is what it's like every time you go and get your hair cut I'm doing it more than once a year! I waited and hour and a half!!!!! After I water for so long I was finally seated (after they took multiple ppl who came after me) I asked the lady to put a partition for me and she refused and said some of my hair was already showing !!! My hair didn't even last the whole night it got frizzy and curly again HORRIBLE STORE!! If I could put zero starts I would. For all my hijabis I definitely DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE. My friend recommended me this place and I decided to go since I wasn't doing anything the day I went. I called before going thinking I needed to make an appointment but instead told me to come before 7 and it'll be ok, so I said fine I'll be there in an hour. Sat for about 1 hr and 25 mins. Then another guy asked me what I needed and I told him I was waiting for ***** and he mentioned it to the hair dresser and told me it'll be about 15 mins. I said ok that's fine. Finally getting my hair wash and it was the worse. 1 minute wash x2 then 30 second conditioner.. (Not exaggerating) worse wash ever. Also I'm not a bad tipper I use to do nails and wash hair, therefore I'm supper fair. Finally... Getting my haircut and it was going find at first until he had another customer waiting for him and he rushed. After he showed me the back I asked him if it was even because that's a pet peeve of mine. I hate uneven haircuts. He said it's good, so I said ok, thanks! Paid $21 for wash, cut and dry. $7 tip for hair dresser and another $3 for the washer. Total of $31. I can't be the person that's upset at them and top them $1 or nothing at all, I just can't do it. Don't ask why. Came home and really got to see my cut and how it was while I flipped around my hair. My right side was longer..... Anyways I'm over writing this review.
