My partner and I recently found this spot on her lunch break because we were craving soup and wanted to avoid dealing with parking downtown. We both ordered the momo (buffalo) noodle soup and were blown away! The noodles were similar to mama/indomie rather than fresh, but I ended up loving it regardless. The broth was very light but super flavorful and savory. AND THE MOMOS!!! Absolutely to die for; I think they were the best I've ever had. Not to mention it was very fairly priced and lasted us both for two meals. Not to mention, especially in the South Bay, most Nepalese/Himalayan restaurants heavily feature Indian food. Rara stands out to me because Nepali food is absolutely the star here. We were a group of 4 VCs and Founders at an event down the street for Startup Taiwan. It was one of the VCs visiting from China, who was having her first Nepalese cuisine experience and an engineer from Denmark, has the cuisine once or twice before. My other friend was a local like me, so we knew our way around the menu. Anita, Johany, Dinash and Rishi took care of us. Anita was able to provide recommendations as I made sure to get chicken hot pot, mixed sizzler, buffalo momos, shrimp curry, roti, yogurt, masala tea, and a bunch of other options for family style. The hotpot was a fav from China. The team worked well together, were friendly, helpful and gave us dedicated service because we beat the dinner rush on a Saturday. As the place got full, as Anita was the point person for new recommendations, it might help for more of the team to also be able to provide recommendations. This is my first time at Rara. We found parking right at the front on a Sunday evening and they seated us immediately. Service was very quick and they have a great array of choices. We tried a Lamb Wrap which we felt was pretty mediocre, it was mostly just seasoned lamb with cabbage served with a side of thin fries and a dip very similar to thousand island sauce. I'm not sure that I recommend the wrap. We loved the Salmon Sizzler that we ordered. There was a decent sized filet grilled and served with a delicious sauce, on a sizzler plate with boiled veggies and Nepali Chow Mein! It was delicious!! The portion for this sizzler plate is quite large, more than enough for 1 person but maybe not enough for 2. I'd reorder the sizzler on a heartbeat if I'm back in the area! read more

They came by several times to take our order but not everyone was present yet and the menu is extensive. They are the same price so I left it alone and the food was good. I enjoyed the sweet creamy sauce on the salmon and it was cooked well. Coconut shrimp was delicious, the sauce it arrived with may have been the same as the salmon sauce. I was surprised by how tasty the fried veg momos were. Shaped like potstickers and filled with lightly spiced minced veggies. I've had steamed veg momos from Inchin's Bamboo Garden before and those were honestly tasteless. These were great! The paneer paratha is sliced like pizza and filled with chopped paneer and I think a leafy green. Enjoyable. I dipped it in the shrimp/salmon sauce. The chow mein had spice that I wasn't expecting, probably from pepper and they served the same noodles with the salmon. Pretty good. The veg thali was interesting, had lots of flavors and textures including a sweet rice pudding, paneer curry, black eyed pea dal, lentil dal, pickled ginger, and crispy papad (dried lentil) roll on top of the basmati rice. My friend made a reservation for us for 6 on a Saturday evening. There's a parking garage nearby so we walked over. At first they sat us for 4 people but my friend made it for 6 so they took us to a bigger table. We sat down and we were waiting for some friends who came like 10 mins later. the waiter didn't come to ask for drinks until about 30 minutes into us sitting down... so that was a little annoying. We ordered a mix of chai and We ordered mango lassi and chai, but they brought out all the chais and completely forgot the mango lassi. No one checked on our table, so I eventually had to get up and ask about it. When we finally ordered food, I got the thali, my husband got the lamb chop sizzler, and we ordered veg momos for the table. The veg momos were honestly not good -- very dry -- though the sauces were great. The entrées came out and I liked my thali, but they forgot the chicken curry that's supposed to come with it. Everyone else's food came out except one of our friends (who is vegetarian), which was surprising since that should've been quicker. When their dish finally arrived, they forgot the naan that was ordered with it. Overall, the service was extremely slow and disorganized. My appadum was also stale, which was disappointing. I personally liked the lamb chops (especially the noodles that came with them), but no one else at the table thought they were that good. PLEASE ORDER THE CAULI 8848 IF YOU LIKE CAULIFLOWER! This takes the cake for my favorite cauliflower ever. It's fried cauliflower coated in a delicious curry-like sauce that looks spicy but is very minimally spicy. The outer texture is vaguely like orange chicken? Whatever it is, it's absolutely incredible. I'd come back just to get the cauliflower again. We also got the dal bhat khana set with chicken curry. I appreciated the variety, but I was less impressed by the flavors in the set. It was solid still and very filling, but the flavors weren't particularly strong nor diverse within the set. We went to Rara 3-4 times in the first year after they opened. The place was always crowded, great service and the food was awesome. I'm not sure what happened since then but we just visited and the experience was below par. The restaurant as maybe 1/4 full yet we sat at our table for 15 minutes with no one stopping by. I got up and walked over to the waiter to ask if we could order some drinks, the waiter came over and we ordered drinks and momos. Then we waited another 15 mins and I could see the waiter just hanging out and surveying the room. So I got up a second time to ask the waiter if he could bring us the beers we ordered. He finally brought us the beers 30 minutes after sitting down. Wow. We received the momos in a reasonable time and they were awesome, as I remember. Then I received my main dish which was a salmon kabob over rice and it was overcooked like a piece of cardboard. I try not to do this, but I had to send it back it was so bad. They cooked a new one and it was much better but still on the edge of being overcooked. At the end, again we did not have a waiter come over so I had to get up to ask for the check. Came here in a really large group for a Thursday business dinner. We ordered a whole bunch of food and drinks. The menu has a nice variety of vegie and non-vegie options. Plenty of street parking nearby. Service was wonderful. I can't tell however if they were intentionally pacing serving the food or if there were too many orders, but I felt food came pretty slowly. Onto the food, I can tell the food is pretty authentic, but several items were too heavy for me. For instance, the potato was really salty, almost bitter. The lamb shank was not the most tender I've had, but decently flavorful. The cauliflower appetizer was pretty good. They've got a couple varieties and I ordered the Nepali Fried Chicken Wings, figuring I'd get something exotic. No, they were basic fried wings, with a small cup of sauce it was hard to get the wings into. OK, next time I'll get something else. I was in the mood for something larger, and ordered the Gorkhali Lamb Shank. Again, a little mixed, because much of the meat on the shank was tough and chewy, not tender. The sauce, however, was intensely flavorful without being hot-spicy, and was absolutely delicious. I scooped that up and actually didn't finish the meat. Named after Rara lake in Nepal, which is the deepest and pristine lake of Nepal. You can see fishes in the lake due to the very clear water and it is part of Rara national park a protected territory. Now will the restaurant justify the name. We were there for a weekend dinner, crowded, but we had a reservation and we were also tad late, but we were seated right away. I was not able to take any interior pictures as they all came washed out due to well lit. Restaurant was crowded and noisy, but people were enjoying, thst is a good sign. We ordered and they started serving after 10-15 minutes. Cauli 8848 Crispy cauliflower soaked in coconut milk and spices. This was the best dish of all! Kwat Soup Sprouted bean soup, not all beans were sprouted though different nothing standing out. Very mildly spiced and a bit salty. Veggie Momo Fried, 2$ more for fried. Disappointing for Nepalise restaurant. Egg chowmein decent and fried eggs were nicely done. Rightly spiced and seasoned. Vegetable Thenduk is Nepalise version of noodle soup very bland. Seasonal mix veg curry was ok nothing good or bad to say. Tawa paneer paratha, paneer filing had no spice, green chilli would have made it better, needed little more seasoning. Paratha was better than the panner one again less seasoning. Juju Dhau is sweet and sour whipped yogurt. Very good. Pistachio and Mango kulfi were decent but rabadi made up fo whatever the kulfi was missing. Overall more salt in liquid dishes like soup and gravy and less salt in main dishes themselves. Seasoning makes a big difference in food. Just the names are Nepalise neither the dishes had the authenticity or the flavors, you can get both of that in other himalyan/Nepalise restaurants. Spice is almost non existent! So if you are a Indian or Nepalise who likes spice, this is not the place. Happy Hour at Rara to experience Nepalese cuisine in Palo Alto. They have an extensive menu with many dishes to choose from. We ordered a variety to try and, to be honest, liked the appetizers more than the entrees. Chicken 8848 was the table's favorite, hands down. The meat was tender and juicy, and the sauce made it even better! The Sizzler dish portion was generous, but the noodles tasted a little plain. This is only my second time trying Nepalese cuisine and overall I'm impressed with Rara. The menu has lots of options so both adventurous and less adventurous diners can find something that appeals to their taste buds. They had a small kids menu also which was perfect for our toddler. We ordered a bunch of appetizers, but the hits at the table were were: - Chicken Momo - little flavor bombs. These dumplings were sooo good - Rara Special Fries - couldn't taste any specific spice, but these were super crispy and we polished off two baskets lol I got the grilled salmon kebab which came with yellow rice and a "creamy butter sauce" that tasted exactly like butter chicken sauce (my fav). Thought the salmon would have come out on a skewer, but it was just one whole piece of grilled salmon. Fantastic nonetheless and a hit with my 3 year old too! I've only had Nepalese food once and it was Momos from a highly rated food truck in the area. Those Momos were good but the Momos at Rara were on an entirely different level! We had the steamed and slightly pan fried Momos with a red spicy sauce and a delicious orange sauce, the orange sauce is amazing. We also had Momos in a saucy/soup-ish form and these were also a 10/10. We had the non-veg Khana set and this was such a great option to try different foods and flavors. It also comes with your choice of buttermilk or chai. In the set there was a serving of fermented mustard leaves and it was so good that I want to try and recreate it so I can have it regularly. I came here with a friend from Nepal and she loves this place and says the flavors are almost spot on to the ones in Nepal. She also pointed out the lamps and decor that can also be found in restaurants in Nepal which is a nice touch. The filling was soft and a tasted great with the sauce that was on top. The service is horrible here and the food is average. When we first arrived for our reservations, the guy in charge tried to seat us at a table between two other tables of people eating. We asked to move to a quieter area and he was annoyed by this request. The front of the restaurant was not busy so we sat by the manager's station. Clearly, sitting there should've meant that the guy running the show would see our empty water glasses without us flagging him down or he would see our dirty empty dishes piling up on the table but unfortunately, that was not the case. As dishes came out, we asked him to take our empty dishes and he replied to "just leave it." Since our table was full and he didn't oblige, we decided to put the empties on the table next to us where they continued sitting all evening. Given his apathy, I won't be back for their Tofu Chili, Grilled Paneer Sizzler, Chicken Chhoila, and Pulao which were the only items I somewhat enjoyed. The spicy level is on point. My friends said the Momos were not good and were really disappointing. We thought about trying their Mushroom Soup since it was cold outside but the manager recommended their Kwati Soup Bean Soup. He said it would be like a lentil soup and he was wrong. The Kwati Soup was green watery broth containing a few beans. The only good thing about the soup was that it was hot in temp. Before we left, we asked someone to take a picture for us and that person was really friendly. My friends and I wanted to try a new type of cuisine and we stumble upon Rara in Palo Alto. This small restaurant serves Nepalese food and to our surprise everything was delicious and the customer service was really good. The restaurant was a little dim with accent lighting on walls. I really enjoyed the akabare wings (spicy!), gorkhali lamb shank (fall off the bone tender), and buffalo mono (juicy). It's a little hard for me to describe the flavors since a lot of the dishes we ordered was something we've never had before. It was like unlocking new flavors to my taste profile. Rara and the service was good. The ambience is a little darker lighting and it feels like a finer dining experience. Food is Nepalese style so it's a fusion of Asian and South Asian flavors. Food ordered: 1. Bhatmas Sadheko (4/5) This is a spiced roasted soy beans dish and had a little kick, but was mostly crunchy and savory with a sprinkle of zest freshness. A good sharing and veggie friendly appetizer. 2. Chicken 8848 (5/5) The dish is fried chicken topped with a nice creamy house, almost tikka masala like, sauce was maybe the highlight of the meal. There's also a cauliflower version two for veggie people. 3. Skewer Lamb Kebab (3/5) The lamb kebab plate came with cut up cubed Lam that was cooked very nicely on top of a bed of yellow rice, and with sides of vegetables and salad. Chicken Momo (4/5) The chicken momo had a really good outside dough as it wS was not too thick and chewy, and there was plenty of delicious filling. It came with a side of two dips which were good but not anything too special imo. Tawa Roti (2/5), Paratha (3/5) The roti and paratha were very similar, but with the Paratha being a little tastier because it had more butter and more layers when you pulled it apart. First time having Nepalese food. They have some really delicious things on the menu here! Unfortunately I have to give them a low score due to an allergy issue which was the restaurant's fault. Superb: Cauli 8848 - breaded and fried cauliflower served in a creamy curry sauce. Delicious and cooked perfectly. Rara Special Fries - Not sure what I expected from this. It's a basket of fries served with a Thousand Island style special sauce. I will say, the fries were cooked perfectly, and the lightly battered surface gives a pleasing crisp. Not to mention it is a prodigious sum of fries. Lamb Chop Sizzler - grilled lamb chops served with a heap of chow mein and some vegetables. These were succulent and had a lovely charred flavor from the grilling on the exterior. Incredible. Good: Buffalo Momos - my first time trying momos. The filling is a little greasy but good flavor on the filling and the 2 sauces are good as well. Nepali Fried Wings - Crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. I think the spices they put on the wings was a little light, and it needed the sauce accompaniment. Overall solid option. Nepali Roti - these are fresh and have a good homemade flavor to them. The item I had an issue with is the Nepali Jeera Pulau. On the menu it states that the item contains "cashew nuts". This dish was served to our party with peanuts, which I am allergic to. Now I don't have a particularly severe allergy to them, but this could have caused a more serious situation for someone who could have an anaphylactic reaction. I did feel my mild allergic reaction (itchy throat, stomachache) after eating a little bit, but I was otherwise fine. After visually confirming there were peanuts in the dish, we notified the staff of the incident, and they checked with us to make sure I was OK. They pointed out to me that I did not mention my allergy before ordering, but I did not think it necessary since peanuts were not even mentioned in the description of the menu item. For that reason alone, I have to give this place a significantly lower rating. The restaurant needs to be more careful with their menu items. Mixing up cashews and peanuts could be a potentially fatal mistake. read more

This is a strong 3-star review. The restaurant and service were great, and the cauliflower appetizer was incredible. However, the Momo sizzler was underwhelming. I'm a big fan of momos, but these made me want to get them elsewhere. The plating was off, the momos weren't hot, and they lacked both flavor and filling. This dish was one of the main reasons I came, so it was a letdown. Maybe next time I'll try something else. read more

Recently tried this place and it was not as we thought it would be. A cozy spot, easy to find seating even on Saturday evening. We ordered the Mushroom Chhoila, momo sizzler, tofu skewer kabab and Chowmein. The Chhoila and Chowmein were amazing, other two quite underwhelming. We also got the kids some paneer paratha and fried rice. While the rice was good, the paratha was rather chewy. Overall, the service was SUPER slow and all the items took forever to arrive. We were having dinner for close to 2 hours, mostly only waiting for the food rather then ordering or eating. Their food is good, but the service definitely needs to improve by leaps and bounds! read more

This place had high ratings both on yelp and g-maps so decided to try something new. Ambiance: The atmosphere is cozy with dim lighting and darker painted walls. It's perfect for dates or even catching up with family and friends. Quite peaceful along with some character. Service: The service was just okay. While the staff was polite, it did take a bit too long for the food to come out--about 20 minutes--even though the restaurant was only about 25% full when we placed our order. This is where I dock a star. Food: The food was mostly great! The lamb sizzling platter was a highlight, arriving at the table literally sizzling and smoking, with bold, delicious flavors. The portion exceeded my expectation --four lamb chops, a healthy side of steamed veggies (not just three carrot sticks), and enough noodles to share between two people. However, the chicken skewer was pretty underwhelming. It lacked the same punch of spices and didn't stand out, so I wouldn't order that again. The kids menu chicken wings had more flavor. Maybe I'll come back for takeout, pricing is quite reasonable for the neighborhood and portions. read more
