This place had high ratings both on yelp and g-maps so decided to try something new. Ambiance: The atmosphere is cozy with dim lighting and darker painted walls. It's perfect for dates or even catching up with family and friends. Quite peaceful along with some character. Service: The service was just okay. While the staff was polite, it did take a bit too long for the food to come out--about 20 minutes--even though the restaurant was only about 25% full when we placed our order. This is where I dock a star. Food: The food was mostly great! The lamb sizzling platter was a highlight, arriving at the table literally sizzling and smoking, with bold, delicious flavors. The portion exceeded my expectation --four lamb chops, a healthy side of steamed veggies (not just three carrot sticks), and enough noodles to share between two people. However, the chicken skewer was pretty underwhelming. It lacked the same punch of spices and didn't stand out, so I wouldn't order that again. The kids menu chicken wings had more flavor. Went to Rara for a work friend dinner in the Fall (and forgot to finish writing my review). Can't say the last time I had Nepalese food so can't compare it to other experiences but we all thought Rara was good. Chicken momos with dry spicy rub - 5/5 Vegetable pan fried momos - 4/5 Now, here's the test. I cannot remember what I ordered or what my tablemates ordered. I do remember liking my dish but the fact that i can't remember what it was (and I most often do remember what i ate months later) is telling. And i do remember one of my friends ordered something with chicken and he did not like it, and another friend ordered the vegetarian noodles and did not care for it either. Given this, I would not go back as there are other interesting places to eat in Palo Alto but if you have never tried Nepalese food, at least try the momos! read more

Such a quaint restaurant, we found parking in a structure about a block away. We made a reservation but there were maybe only two other parties so it wasn't necessary. Unfortunate that they didn't have much business, the food and service is very good! Apart from the traditional momos, we weren't super familiar with Nepali food. So we asked our server for recommendations. We settled on the buff momos, seasonal vegetable curry, goat taas, mushroom choila, and mango lassi. Everything was absolutely delicious and came out with great timing. Nothing was too spicy! The service was phenomenal. Tried Nepali food for the first time with my friend today around 4:30 PM at Rara Nepal Restaurant, and it was such a great experience! The food was incredibly flavorful. Every dish had a nice balance of spices and felt very authentic. You can really tell the food is made fresh. The staff were also very friendly and patient for a first timer, which made the experience even better for someone trying Nepali cuisine for the first time. My partner and I decided to get the following: - Momo Sizzler (4/5): This came with chow mein underneath. We got the momo with buffalo inside since we've never had buffalo. It tasted similar to lamb. It was a tad spicy but nothing too bad. Lots of flavor and comes out sizzling hot! - Chicken 8848 (5/5): If there's anything you need to order here, it is this! So creamy and delicious. Chicken is cooked tenderly. - Tawa Paneer Paratha (4/5): I like paneer so we decided to get this as a side. Delicious and a lot thinner than I expected. Paired with the sauce from Chicken 8848, this was good. However, nothing mind blowing and could be passed on it's own unless you want something to pair with another dish. - Asan Indrachowk ko Lassi (4/5): Creamy yogurt drink! Very thick and not too sweet, but provides a refreshing taste. Seemed to be topped with nuts, likely pistachios. Service was good, except for one part, which is the reason why I gave 4 instead of 5 stars. Upon ordering, we asked the server if any of the items we ordered contained nuts because my partner is allergic. The server said no. At some point, my partner started to have an allergic reaction, which kind of ruined our dining experience. We discovered it was likely from the yogurt drink, which I realized had small chunks of what looked like pistachio. It would be good practice to include any allergy information on the menu itself, since the description of the drink also did not mention nuts. I had a reservation at 1:30 on a Sunday/holiday (Mother's Day) but since we finished our previous event early, we ended up arriving at 12:45. We were still seated immediately since the restaurant wasn't too full. The water tastes amazing. I wonder if there was some mint or cucumber or some other "refreshing" enhancer but it's very subtle. We ordered the gorkhali lamb shank and veggie (vegetarian) momo sizzler which came in about 15 minutes. We both thought the dishes were fairly spicy (on the tongue but not enough to sweat or be in pain) but very well-seasoned and salted. Since the noodles were on a sizzling stone plate, we had to transfer them to our plates quickly to avoid burnt noodles. The lamb was covered in some kind of tomato-based sauce (like a thick curry) that paired well with the cumin rice. It fell off the bone easily too. Service has good down substantially. I feel bad writing this review since this was our go to spot for Himalayan food. As they got more popular they weren't able to scale their operations or service. They are totally disorganized. They mess up your reservations, don't honor it, and if you manage to get the food it's slow or inconsistent. I got my hopes up due to the glowing reviews and was craving an amazing, wholesome Nepalese thali. The restaurant atmosphere and the service was lovely. But the food was disappointing. I ordered the vegetarian thali. It came with chai. Some curries in the thali that should have been served piping hot were barely lukewarm, which was a bummer. Black dal was insipid and bland. Vegetable kurma lacked salt and spice, also bland. The food did have that fresh, "homely" as they say in India, taste, but too bland and lacking in the umami, deliciousness that the best Nepalese restaurants offer. Chai was good, though, and I appreciate that refills are unlimited. I think this restaurant has potential, perhaps with some tweaking. Love this new addition to Cal Ave. The food was delicious! We shared 2 veggie appetizers - the cauliflower 8848 and the paneer choilla, both of which we really enjoyed. The choilla is made with a typical Nepali spice called timur, a Himalayan Sichuan peppercorn. The flavoring was unique - I've never had anything like it! The cauliflower was excellent - highly recommend it. We had a Kwati soup each (also vegetarian) as our main course. Loved this very traditional, warm, hearty and healthy soup on this warm winter day. For dessert, we shared the Shikarni which was absolutely delicious! It's a very thick yogurt that's slightly sweetened and topped with pistachio and saffron. The staff is very friendly, makes great recommendations and is eager to explain what makes Nepali food unique. Seating is comfortable with a combination of booths, 2/4 tops and some larger tables. Both were good but the chicken was definitely better. I came with a large party of 20 so I understood that the service would be slower than usual but there was over an hour gap between our appetizers and entrees. One of our entrees did not even end up coming out, and one of our chicken appetizers was severely undercooked. The staff were very nice and friendly, and I understand that these issues were due to us being such a large party. Yet, I still feel like there is a standard that must be withheld. This place is a great addition to Cal Ave and adds some more diversity to the cuisine offerings here. I went here on NYE with three others and got the last walk-in table. Everything we ordered was delicious and the service was extremely attentive and polite, especially considering two of us showed up half an hour late and we ordered sporadically. We got the Katahar Aalu (jackfruit curry), Chicken 8848, Buffalo Momo, Lamb Shank, and Dal Bhat Khana Set with chicken. The Katahar Aalu was less saucy than we expected, but the jackfruit texture was spot on. The Chicken 8848 was a highlight for me - loved the coconut and spice flavor combo. The Lamb Shank was tender and not too gamey. Dal Bhat Khana was interesting - I liked most of the elements but couldn't get on with a couple of the strongly flavored ones (e.g. the mushrooms). The ambience is pleasant and easy to have a conversation in. Not loud at all, and tables are spread out with comfy dining chairs. Price after adding a glass of wine and rice came out to $124 subtotal for four of us, not too bad for Palo Alto. All in all, a wonderful place to check out, and I will visit again. read more

We shared a Dal Bhat Khana Set with fish, some lassi drinks and a paratha bread. It was interesting to try so many little bites of things in such a short time. TLDR: my experience was a bit disappointing given the glowing Yelp reviews I had recently had an amazing Nepalese meal in Roseville, CA, so I was excited by all the positive reviews of Rara and the prospect of a superb spot for momos and the like close to home. After trying Rara for lunch, I felt a little let down, in part because I've had great versions of similar dishes recently and the good reviews on Yelp had gotten my expectations up. I'd say our experience was 3/5 for the Bay Area, and 4/5 for Palo Alto. The ambiance and plating is nice. We ordered: Mango lassi Chicken momos Cauliflower 8848 We didn't realize that the dishes arrived "as they are ready," which works well if you're eating family style but can be an issue if one person's dish arrives 15 min before the next dish. Heads up that you won't want to wait till all the dishes arrive to start eating. The cauliflower looked like it would be spiced and flavorful, but turned out being pretty bland. It could have used salt, as well as spicing that offered punchiness or nuance. Surprisingly, despite the bright coloring, the thick sauce tasted like bland cream, without any prominent flavor from coconut, spices, or other seasoning. This dish really needed something. The texture of the crispy cauliflower seemed good - I love cauliflower dishes like this generally, and I think this could have been a solid dish if the sauce had any notable flavoring. As is, it mostly felt heavy but not particularly interesting or satisfying. The chicken momos were mostly fine. About half of the momos were missing bottoms - it seemed like they had stuck to the pan or otherwise broke during steaming - which meant most of their tasty juice had leaked out before it got to the table. The ones that arrived whole had a pleasant soupy inside that bursts in your mouth when you dig in (although watch out, they can also end up exploding onto your clothes, as we discovered). The tops of the momos seemed a bit gummy compared to momos we have had elsewhere - it seems like there was an issue fully steaming them while still keeping them intact. However, the dipping sauces that come with the momos were the best part of the meal, and they made this dish. I think the chicken momo filling would have felt a bit plain on its own, but the punchy sauces had the layers and nuance I had been hoping for from this meal. I can't tell if we caught Rara on an off day, given how enthusiastic prior Yelpers have been about this spot. As a whole, I can tell Rara is using quality ingredients and good spices - but the execution today seemed off and made for a blander experience than I was expecting. The food looks pretty, but I'm not sure the taste will call me back. We might give them another try to see if we have better luck next time ...but we also might end up defaulting to other places we know consistently wow us with flavor. read more

Went to Rara for lunch and truly enjoyed the flavorful unique dishes. They have many vegetarian as well as non-vegetarian dishes. We tried the Momo (dumplings) and they were amazing. Rara is the upscale Nepali restaurant that Bay Area needed. We had an opportunity to attend the soft opening of Rara and we sure were delighted. The place is cozy with beautiful art work representing Nepal, the mountains, the temples, the people and sheer beauty. Here's what we ordered: 1. Akabare Wings : 5/5 these flavor packed chicken wings were absolutely delicious. The sauce has just the right amount of heat. You'll definitely want to order this. 2. Goat Taas: 5/5 - wow! This was one of my favorites dishes and trust me it was really hard to pick a fav. The goat was tender and cooked to perfection. The hint of spices as you enjoy each bite jut builds up and leaves you wanting more. 3. Chicken momo: 5/5 - I'll be honest, once you've had momo in Nepal it's really hard to match the flavors and tastes. I have yet to find a restaurant that serves momo like they do in Nepal. Well my friends, you are in for a great. First of all, the momo wrappers are hand rolled and this is key because at most places you get machine wrapped momo. They're ok too but something about the hand rolled and wrapped momo that connects you to the real flavors of Nepali momo. The filling inside was so juice and the flavors again reminded me of the momo in Nepal. The chutney was delish as well. Needless to say, you have got to order these momo. The waiters were really friendly but the service was not the best, the drinks we ordered were forgotten and we had to remind them to bring it out half way through the meal. The fish chhoila 3.5/5: this would have been my favorite? The flavors of this were really good but unfortunately it came out a bit cold. The waiter explained that the sauce is cold but the fish itself was also lukewarm. This would have been my favorite if the fish was actually hot. Cauliflower 8848 4/5: this was pretty good! Very crispy and saucy. I enjoyed it but it is battered and fried which was a bit heavy. Flavors were still good though. Lamb sizzler 4/5: the lamb chops were cooked well and had flavor but the noodles were just okay, a little bit on the plain side. This dish comes with lots of vegetables. Pretty dang good! Biggest takeaway is that the Buffalo Momo is lit and I will def be getting again, and that overall I was surprised by how not-spicy it was. We made a reservation for dinner but didn't have to since there were many empty tables on a Saturday evening. The food was good and my toddler loved the kids menu items. We ordered lamb shank, chicken chowmein, kids chicken wings, cheese roti and Chhoila. We enjoyed everything except Chhoila which had a very strong taste of ginger. The food was good and flavorful. However, the service was biased to say the least. Despite ordering same dishes prior to another table that came in after us, our dishes were served to them first and when asked why we hadn't received appetizers even after 20 minutes of ordering, they said they "mistakenly" gave the order to the next table. There were multiple waiters hovering over next table whereas we repeatedly had to flag waiters down for basic requests. I would advise prospective patrons, particularly those from diverse backgrounds and neighboring countries of whose cuisine the restaurant purportedly celebrates, to exercise caution when considering a visit. It's a shame we won't be returning to try other items from the menu. read more

We arrived on a Friday evening around 7pm. The restaurant was relatively full on left hand side upon entering. It was also very loud for most of the night so it was hard to converse. We ordered cauli 8848, Veg Dal Bhat Khana Set, kids fried rice, Kids Chicken Wings with Aalu Wedges, chicken momos, lamb chop sizzler and chicken chow mein. The cauli 8848 was the best part of the entire meal. Everyone enjoyed it. It had a hint of sweetness and wasn't spicy. So, it is perfect for those who can't handle the heat! The chicken momos were bland and warm. It comes with ketchup and some sesame sauce. But because the person eating it was expecting it to taste like xiaolongbao, they didn't enjoy it. It also took a really really long time to make. Everyone was mostly done eating by the time it arrived. The kid's chicken was ok maybe a little too spicy for the kids though. :( He had to drink his enter glass of water after he took a bite of it. But it did look like he enjoyed the potato wedges since he only ate those. The fried rice, as it was too much food for the kids, wasn't eaten. It was later finished off by the parents. I myself ordered the lamb chop with noodles. I thought that it was pretty good. I enjoyed every tiny bit of it. It also retained heat very well because of the heated platter. I would get this again if I ever came back. I don't know much about the dal khana set since I didn't taste it. But @ least the presentation was good! I was told the chicken chow mein was curry style if that is your kind of thing. I personally didn't try it so I don't have much to judge on that part. We were able to take most of that home for our family member to finish off though. I also didn't try the soup but it looked like a healthy home cooked soup. In summary, most of the foods we tried were ok. I did enjoy my lamb plate though. We thought the service on the slow side though. The average cost per person was about $33. Ordered Momo sizzler - rating 4/5 Chicken momos served on a sizzling bed of veggies and chow mein and drizzled with the common momo dressing. One of the good dishes on the table Goat curry - rating 3.8/5 The curry was good, reminiscent of flavors back home in India. Goat meat was hit and a miss - few pieces were ok, most were chewy Gorkhali yakhni pulav - rating 2/5 Mild flavored non spicy pulav made with meat, made a good companion for goat curry. I was super surprised at the little quantity of the rice dish served. Almost 1/4th or 1/2 of what you generally get in a plate of rice dish at any other restaurant. Main complaint - the goat that came with it was so chewy ( adult goat meat ) that you'd need pliers to pull the meat out. Very disappointing Shrimp chilli - rating 4/5 Crispy fried shrimp in a saucy gravy - little hot from crushed red chilli paste but nothing overboard. Cauli 8848 - rating 3/5 Crispy batter fried cauliflower chunks in a gravy similar to what you get with butter chicken. Was too mild for my pallete. Food came after ~20 mins of ordering.
