The sidewalk sign that makes you aware that this New restaurant is there.
    Manuel M.

It was something right out of a fairytale. Two close friends with a passion for Indian cuisine and a dream of one day owning their own restaurant. And nowhere else but in the Star City of Roanoke could this dream have come true. Two weeks ago they opened their restaurant which they named "Rasa Nirvana Spice and Spirit," in a wonderful location on Salem Ave in Downtown Roanoke, right across from the Wells Fargo building. And today I had an opportunity to visit it for the first time and I was mesmerized with what I saw and tasted. Still without a restaurant front sign, but just a sidewalk sign hand written with color chalk on a blackboard material, no one would expect to find what I did when I opened their door and entered. A small but elegantly designed and decorated space, with what looked like original, rustic red brick walls, and a magestic wooden bar with mirrors and beautiful lighting treatment, under the original high ceilings painted black with ceiling fans and simple, but charming chandeliers that gave the place lots of character and warmth. Comfortable and elegant booths lined the wall opposite the bar with tables and chairs all around. A friendly, unasuming, relatively young gentleman with a distinctive look, welcomed me at the Host's station, (whom later I would find out was one of the co-owners of the restaurant), and took me to one of the booths, handing me the menu, and taking my drink order. Since it was lunchtime I ordered a soda and took my time studying the menu. This Indian fusion restaurant featured a modern menu blending coastal and Goan influences with traditional Indian spices, complete with tandoor dishes, vibrant curries, shareable plates, and with a strong focus on spice-driven craft cocktails. I ordered from the Main Rasa section of their menu a Tikka Masaka with Chicken and a Garlic Naan. It also was served with rice. Something that I liked when ordering was that the server gave you the option of choosing how spicy you wanted your sauce that came with the food. You could choose from 1 not too spicy to 10 very spicy and hot. My server, who doubled as my host, and was one of the co-owner of the restaurant, along with his friend, the chef, brought me my order when it was ready. It came freshly cooked to the point of smoke coming out of it when you stired it. My entrée was amazingly delicious. It was chucks of chicken breast seasoned and cooked to perfection and placed inside this amazingly tasty sauce. The Garlic Naan was so fresh, soft, and tasty as well. The best I've ever had. When I was finished and paid was when I found out that my server was also one of the co-owners of the restaurant along with his friend and cook. We talked about how it had been their life dream and here it had come true. I asked if I could take a portrait of him to include with my review and he replied in the affirmative and asked if I could also include in another photograph his friend co-owner and the rest of the staff that was there at the time. Surely, I replied, and asked how to say Thank you in Hindi so I could tell them. I took the photograph and told them: "Dhanyavaad." I invite you to view my photographs accompanying this review to get a better sense of the place and the high-quality of their food. And highly recommend you give them a visit. Their ambiance, food, and customer service is such that will provide you with an exceptional dining experience.

Wanted to try the new spot. The menu is a bit confusing as they list options but without descriptions, I had no idea what most of them were. Ended up with lab something or other; can't remember the name but it's the chunky version of chicken tikka masala. Also got korma. Asked for medium and they were both very milk. Server was friendly but my water was never refilled and the backing of the booth was loose so every time the woman behind me moved, I did too. And she was practically yelling and singing so loudly and terribly that it ruined the mood. It would have been nice not to be seated with them directly behind me when the rest of the dining area was open and no customers. Would I return... maybe. Honestly, I prefer the Nawab around the corner. I just felt it was more upscale and intimate. They don't offer papadum or chutney while waiting and allowing people to yell and sing like that made the entire vibe of the place down. They also serve utensils with paper napkins. Not a Big deal but it's something to know if you're bringing someone out for an upscale place. Beer was only $4 for happy hour. Be sure to use the left door coming in and right door going out. Street parking available and theres a lot half a block away across the street

Really good food! Have to recommend this restaurant. Have had several things on the menu now several times, and it is consistently good. Nice to see what they have done with this space, and outdoor seating is wonderful. There are definitely some interesting options on the menu that you cannot get at other Indian inspired restaurants. Yet - my standard chicken tikka masala is available and absolutely fantastic!

OMG -- the food and the service were top notch!! My wife and I stopped by after church for Sunday lunch. It wasn't busy since this was only their second weekend after opening, which made for a nice relaxed experience. We sat outside on the patio and the weather was perfect. We started with the Tiger Prawns appetizer (I originally called them jumbo shrimp... but I was educated Apparently they're technically a different species). Pictured below -- and absolutely delicious. After that, we were hoping the rest of the food would be just as good... and it definitely did not disappoint. I got the goat, and my wife ordered the curry chicken. We also added garlic naan and a dosa.  Yeah ... we'll definitely be coming back.

A notable reason to do that would be that they offer dosas on Saturdays, but not to go (a thin crepe tends not to travel well). I got takeout, and despite ordering on their website they did not seem to be on top of that order when I arrived. It didn't matter to me, and I would suggest that seekers of food that has that home-cooked taste would be well advised not to be overly time-sensitive. I was offered a handful of pakodas while I waited to ensure that I had something fresh to eat despite taking most of my food to go. Attention was also paid to my dietary needs, as they asked me if adding a dairy-containing raita on the side to my otherwise vegan order was okay. Their menu is not huge, the portion size is not huge for the money, but the flavor was huge. From the curry leaves sauteed onto the little side of potatoes they gave me to the rich spice mix of dal to the flaky indulgence of the paratha on the side, the experience was dynamic. Their appetizers come in bulk, but I'll have no problem finding a use for the extra onion pakodas that I vacuum sealed. I probably tried half of the vegetarian things on their menu, but I left wondering when I'd find myself back this way again so I can try the other half.

I ordered some chickpeas and bread, not knowing the chickpeas already came with bread. That said, the thin, grilled, potato-filled bread is delicious when done right, which it was here. My chickpeas were delivered in a tomato-y preparation and provided needed substance to get me through the day. It's the sort of family run place where the kids were hanging out (perhaps a snow day for them). I could imagine them offering more on the market side, but the food I got was a good deal and I saw enough vegetarian options to be worth coming back.

For some time now, I've been looking forward to eating here because I've been hearing many good things about this restaurant, that had been open for less than a year now. When we arrived it was already dark outside, but during this time of the year it gets dark early. The restaurant was well lit from outside and its sign on the small parking lot was lit from inside and had photos of some of their food. It also mentioned that their food was Halal quality. This means that it did not contain pork. Inside, the place was clean and decorated very simple with large size poster prints of photos from some of the cultures of the food and cuisine served here. The dining room was on the left of the building and had booths along the left wall and two persons tables and chairs as well. The owner and host came out and greeted us with a warm welcome, handing us copies of the menu which was very well designed with glossy photos next to the food entrées listed there. This was very helpful because it gave a visual sense of the food, of which many I didn't know, making it easier to order. To drink there were some large display refrigerators full of different drinks for us to reach and get one. To start with since this was our first time eating there, the owner brought us bowls of their Chicken Soup from thebAppetizers section in the menu. This soup was amazingly delicious. Simply the best Children Soup that I have ever had. I urge you to view the photographs that I took to accompany my review and you will get a better sense of it deliciousness. For it is said that a picture is worth a thousand words. Then we decided to get several dishes to share among all of us imitating the culture of the cuisine. Among the entrées we ordered were: The Fresh Lamb Tikka Kabab, the Bulani kachalo, Chicken Beryani, the Qurma Potatoes, Chick Pea, Eggplant, Salad Afghani Style Plate Mix, and some Special bread. All the food looked wonderful and tasted even better. For dessert we had the Sherpayra (Milk Fudge) and Afghan Mixed Cookies with a cup of a Special Tea. Afterwards we took a tour of the Grocery, on the right side of the building, and observed all the items available, from foods, to rugs, to jewelry, to an indefinite variety of Afghan items. I highly recommend this restaurant as one of a kind, of its kind. The atmosphere is comfortable and relaxed, the food was amazingly delicious, and the service provided was very welcoming and friendly. I definitely think we should all support this new restaurant and tell our friends about it. I know I will enthusiastically.

And they serve your food with a heaping bowl of basmati rice. I was with my mother, and she ordered a mixed grill. It had a little bit of everything--lamb, chicken, shrimp, fish. It was well-seasoned. I also ordered a side of mango chutney and some naan. The naan was soft and buttery, and the chutney was delicious--it was also sweet enough that ordering dessert became unnecessary. The restaurant was decorated with beautifully embroidered decorations depicting Indian scenery. There were also statues as well (see photos below). The one thing that could raise this review from 4 to 5 stars is that the service was rather ordinary. Not bad, just ordinary. I highly recommend this spot to lovers of Indian cuisine!
