Yelp recommended this spot as being 1) close to me and 2) great! It was very close to me and I would say it was good, but not GREAT. I ordered a carne asada burrito (no beans). The girl at the register was very friendly while helping me and taking phone orders. I think everyone is biased towards the Mexican food they have eaten the most of and for me that's San Diego. The carne asada meat is cute us into tiny bits at Raul's and seemed to be much saucier than I am used to. I might try this place again if I am in the area but I would order something else. read more

My mother in law lives in Wauconda and I've passed this place so many times. Finally got a chance to try it this week. Right off the bat, I had a feeling this place would be 5 stars all day long. The place next door to Raul's is a liquor store and when I got out of the car there was an abuelita in the car next to me with scratch off lottery tickets, so already the tickets pace has street cred. The woman at the taking orders was attentive and friendly. Ordered 2 tacos de Chicharron and 2 chile relleno tacos. The chile rellenos were ok. Not much flavor, but ok. The tacos de chicharron were some of the best I've had in a long time. Why the two stars? Well, the place is pretty wide open and you can see where the food is made. One guy is working the grill and another is dressing the tacos and bagging the food. I asked for onions and cilantro to be put on the tacos. I happened to look over and the guy behind the counter is not wearing gloves and just raw dogging his hands into the onions and cilantro and putting that into the tacos. I'm no stranger to taqueria's and that dudes hands right in there was jarring. Put some gloves on and I'll drive from Evanston to Wauconda regularly for the tacos de Chicharron. read more

Have gone here twice already and have gotten the carne asada taco dinner and it is delicious! I love the salsa verde so make sure that you ask for it! It's not to spicy but has great flavor. Would definitely recommend getting the taco dinner! read more

This is my favorite for Mexican. Here's why: cooked by Mexicans in the kitchen, the restaurant is full of Mexicans eating in, they switch tortillas to corn to accommodate my GF allergy! Friendly folks, bathrooms out in front, plenty of chairs and tables to dine in, and as for food, I got a couple of steak tacos with cilantro and onions (very tasty) and a king sized steak burrito. Service was a tad slow, at least compared to their nearby rival at Alonzo's but they managed to belt through a bit of a lunch rush - well done! It's a bit of a small place with some parking, so I would say get what you need and then eat at home, work, or elsewhere. It is nice there but can get crowded quickly. Again, the food was good, especially the tacos, the burrito was a bit smaller than I expected and the veggie balance was a bit off for me (I had some crunch for lettuce but didn't sense much else?). Still, aside that good eats are not anywhere else, Raul's is definitely a keeper to go back to. 4.5/5 is my review. read more

I havnt had enough of their menu to validate the 5th star however I've had enough to say the following: there's arguably 2-3 Mexican food places in town to pick from and two of them apparently have history with each other, this being one of them. I'll let you dig on that tidbit if you want too but for what really matters... I've had multiple burritos, enchiladas, nachos and tacos, all top tier. This is the busiest out of the three contenders by a substantial margin however street tacos down the street is more family oriented and gets busy as well. Place is clean, consistently. You can tell unlike the other named burrito express down the other street that they invested in media and their branding. This is shown through their photos on yelp, their clean sleek modern menu that could be successful in downtown LA CA let alone a small town in rural IL. They have a patio deck which is fine, not scenic but it gets you outside. Inside could use some decor to further back up their branding angle as it's more sterile than spirited but does a far better job of relating to the modern consumer than the other express in town. (I have a review for them as well) Dine in experience lacks really any experience worth staying for, togo would be recommended. Really the thing I wish I can speak too is their horchata. I've had it at the other two places and street tacos has the best of those two, anxious to see if it gets bested here. In all can't go wrong here to get your Mexican food fix for togo or a simple functional dine in one. read more

I visit this place 3-4 times a month. Great food and greatly priced! I usually get the fish tacos because they are the best fish tacos outside of the city. Sooo good! The chips, salsa and guacamole are so good I don't want to share. The salsa has a kick. The taco salad is great. Following a keto lifestyle, I like the steak taco salad with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes with guacamole and sour cream on the side!! Yum. The kids meal comes with French fries. Once again near Wauconda & needing a good meal before a round of serious Golf (Company sponsored Event) remembered Raul's was near by, so off I went. Too many authentic Mexican Delicacies to choose from, but went with their King Burrito with Steak as my protein. Staff was extremely welcoming and wanted to know if I was planning to eat it their. Extra's were in the works...next time. A hidden gem and known to many Drivers, Locals and Hispanic's near and far. My Brother recommended this spot. Satisfied my hunger requirement. Consistently the best quick Mexican food in Illinois in my opinion, and I have been coming here my whole life. The steak tacos are always tender and juicy, never too greasy, and seasoned perfectly - a good steak taco is the standard by which I always judge a taqueria (every solid place should have one!) Their shrimp and fish are always fresh, and never have a fishy flavor, and their salsa is liquid gold. Wife and I stopped in one night as she wanted Mexican food and we had never been before. It's certainly a little hidden, but plenty of parking space. Walking in we were the only ones there so we surveyed the menu and ordered. Coming in, I wouldn't call it a place with a welcoming feeling. Service was fine. I wouldn't say friendly as there were certainly no smiles or anything of the sort. Food came out fairly quick. I had a burrito dinner and my wife had enchiladas. Food was good. No complaints there whatsoever. The woman that brought us our food was pleasant. Took us a second to get our drinks communicated, but it all worked out. I think the only downside was that there was certainly a funky smell in the place. Not quite sure what it was, but it was a bit off putting. We also would have liked to see a fountain soda machine, instead of having cans. Place had 5 or 6 people come in after us and order so it seems like they keep busy. We'll most likely stop back in if we're in the area, but it'd probably be in the summer so we could find our way outside to a bit more of a favorable eating environment. read more

Best Mexican cuisine in Wauconda period. Homemade tortilla shells unlike other "authentic" restaurants nearby. Tacos, Burritos, Tamales, Enchiladas, Quesadillas, etc have all been fantastic. For the price, amount of food, and taste you cannot beat it. Definitely call ahead, it will save you 10 minutes of waiting for your food. read more

Well I love this place. I have been here many times over the years. Today I ordered a plain boring king burritos with Carne asada. I drove home. The burrito was very healthy. It however was missing one key ingredient. The carna asada. Now one piece. Did not know that until I was three bites in and 6 miles away. Not sure how a burrito with no beans and extra rice can Carne asada does not include the Carne asada. I Called and let them know. They said I'm sorry. However I still ate my vegetarian burrito which is fine if you are a vegetarian, which I am.not. at a minimum they could say please come back and have a Carne asada burrito as you had ordered. Update 5.13 Well i had to put it down another star. We have finally given up on your restaurant. Today our order was wrong, my husband steak tacos were awful and dry and the meat was completely burnt! The guac in no way is freshly made it reminds me of the guac you can get from walmart or jewel premade but just add more cilantro to it to try and make it seem legit. The horchata tastes different every time. There are just to many better places for Mexican food and after the 5th time we give up with this establishment. Will not be back read more

We ordered nachos, a burrito, two steak tacos, pork taco, chicken taco. TACOS: the shells were hard! Almost like rubber and they has the nerve to double-up on them. They tasted old and stale. There's no way whomever preparing them did not know that they were stale. BURRITO- Beans were not good and it didn't have any rice.
