Place was good enough, I would definitely try it again, but there were pros and cons. Don't let the location in the outside fool you, it's very big inside. As I was walking up, there was a guy walking out of the tae kwon do studio next-door. I asked if he ever ate there and he emphatically said "yes it's delicious." Salsa was good, but about every fourth chip was stale. El Pastor taco was very flavorful, but the meat was a little overcooked. Got two à la carte enchiladas, one cheese, one beef. The cheese was fine, the beef one had a strange taste, almost like a cleaning agent. I asked the waitress if the tamales were any good, she shrugged her shoulders, and said yes. Normally, I would take that as a no, but I read a bunch of reviews that said the tamales were good. I tried one of each. Chicken comes with green sauce, pork comes with red sauce. Both were fantastic. I would definitely return just to buy tamales. Prices are cheap, I got all this and a beer for 28 bucks. read more

Tacos El Norte has been a favorite of mine growing up, every time I visit town I go back here. The staff is very friendly and provide great service. Good for all party sizes and has a more casual vibe. Carne asada is a go to, I also love their quesadillas and coca cola chicken. My friend love the torpedo burrito and tacos. Every time we order from this restaurant the order is made wrong. When we call them to report the issue they tell us either to return to the restaurant with the food to show them it was wrong, or report it to Doordash, who is the only option for ordering online. read more

What looks like a hole in the wall delivers some of the most flavorful authentic Mexican! Staff was attentive and quick to deliver food. Margarita was amazing (don't skip out on making it spicy). This is a great family owned neighborhood Mexican restaurant. The food is fresh and delicious, while the service is fast with really nice servers. The chips are made fresh and all the staples of Mexican food taste great. We love the flank steak, tacos, burritos and the homemade salsa. Both done in and carry out are great. read more

First visit while passing through the area. Busy Saturday afternoon but we got one of the few tables remaining. Service was friendly and prompt. Seems to be a "go-to" place for customers in the area. We ordered the large Burrito Suisa with chicken which was large enough to split. It was really good! The chicken wasn't dry and the other ingredients were ample. I wish there was one of these restaurants closer to home! The salsa and chips were really tasty too. I'd like that salsa recipe! read more

Food is fantastic. I've tried enchiladas, suizo burrito, flautas and their guava drink. The two ladies doing customer service are very helpful and welcoming. This place is a bit hidden away so pay attention when driving for it. Service is A+ food is A+. Worth your time! It should become your new normal Mexican food restaurant. It's hard to find, but well worth the "struggle" (boy, we sure love in a great world). Anyway, great food, great service, and a great environment. I've been coming to this particular location for 20 years. Out of a 10 mile radius of where I live. I find this to be the best, Mexican food. The reason being everything seems to be fresh, consistent, the wait staff is friendly and very prompt that goes for the kitchen as well. They pop out your orders fairly quick. They have a big menu and unlike some other Mexican restaurants are very generous in allowing to make substitutions in various combinations of your liking. The pricing has always seemed to be, very fair and reasonable. The seating is always cleaned and ready to go. read more

The salsa that was brought to the table was cold and bland. I thought maybe the green salsa would be better but it did not taste like anything, they definitely skimped on the tomatillos. I got the Sope, it was not bad but I ordered Asada on it and I'm not sure what kind of meat was on there but that was not asada. At first I thought maybe it was carnitas but the more I ate it the more I got Taco Bell steak vibes from it. I can't comment on the burrito because my husband ate it, he said it was okay but not the best burrito he's ever had. Overall, the food was not horrible but I won't be returning. My family and I love this place. Starting out eating too much of the chips and salsa is my problem. Their spicy and green salsas are great. Plus guacamole is a must. Loaded Steak tacos are my go to. Their coco cola chicken tacos are not bad just love their beef. I added their Pozole last time I was there and I would not recommend it. I have had lots of great Pozole. Their meat was unique not as I expected. Stick with their tacos or burritos. read more

The food here is excellent. I have used both take-out and eat-in services. My only negative is DO NOT ORDER ON LINE unless you want Doordash to deliver (or they charge you even if you pick it up). You have to call in your order if you want to pick it up. They answer right away and the order is ready within a half hour (usually 15 minutes). Very nice people and great menu. As stated above the food is excellent. read more

This has been our #1 choice for Tex mex and tacos for over 20 years. They used to make the best guacamole you can find BUT the last two visits things with the guacamole have changed. It's like an avocado purée without onions and maybe a teaspoon of tomatoes at best. So I think we will go elsewhere now. read more

Incredibly HORRIBLE service. My son placed an order for 11 people and after 10 minutes and doubling checking, they told him, "We're out of rice & beans." He handed me the phone and I 1st asked @why didn't you tell him that at the begging of the call? I then asked, since all the "plates," included rice and beans in the price, how much will you reduce the price for not having 2 of the items? They put me on hold and after waiting 20 minutes total they came and said,"we won't give any price reduction and we just decided it's too late to make you any food," 2 days before Christmas. It's the 2nd time they were rude or messed up in 3 months, and they raised their prices to the point where they're very expensive. They've had a lot of success in the last 10 years and it's clearly gone to their heads and don't care about customers any more. Very sad, and I'd avoid the place unless you enjoy added stress when you just want to relax and have a meal. read more

I've been to this restaurant numerous times. Their ribeye steak (minus the onions) burritos, chimichangas and ribeye steak or chicken quesadillas are very good. Their guacamole is always fresh and delicious. Their frozen mango margarita is fantastic. The wait staff is normally friendly and they are usually always packed. There's a reason for that. I will definitely be back (once we can) or for carry out in the meantime. It is very important to support our local businesses right now!! read more

Staff is like family and anticipate your needs. No frills. Unique torpedo taco/burrito & coca-cola chicken (if u like Spicy) are signature on menu ( which I love). Good skinny margarita that u can easily turn into spicy with a side of jalapeños. read more

Excellent food, first time coming here make sure you do a reservation before coming because it is packed. The inside is decorated nicely and clean. I had a shrimp cocktail and it was very good and had some jumbo shrimps. We also had 1/2 steak and 1/2 Chile relleno with shrimp. The steak was good and the Chile relleno was auténtico. The beans and rice where delicious even my kids ate them and they never do. Also we had steak taco and Al pastor taco there both very good. read more

This is the only place in Lake Zurich that I will have at least once every time I'm in town. Tacos El Norte is located in this strip mall and you wouldn't think much from the street, but this place has incredible tacos, great margaritas, and fresh and delicious salsa and guacamole. Also - they are so speedy in the kitchen. I sometimes call for a to-go order and it's done within minutes. Fast, friendly, moderately priced: 5/5 every time! read more

Date of visit: 4-7-2026 - early evening…read more I've never been there before. I usually go to other Mexican food restaurants in the area. The place was clean and roomy. I took a booth and was given an extensive menu. The server offered chips and salsa. I was brought a small basket with about 10-12 large chips and a small shallow dish of watery commercial grade salsa in the basket with a tablespoon in it. Not having been given any additional plate, I guess I was expected to spoon the salsa onto the chips over the basket, because the dish was too shallow to dip a chip into other than the very tip of each chip. I ordered what I usually order at most Mexican food joints - taco dinner al pastor with onions and cilantro no cheese on anything including the beans. Service was prompt. The beans had cheese on them which I returned, and a dish came back without cheese, except when I took my first fork full, there was a strand of cheese left. The cook had just lifted the cheese off the original dish instead of replating the beans. The rice was formed into a perfect half moon shape on the quite large square plate. That is usually a signal to me that the restaurant is into portion control, as the aesthetics as can be seen from the photo attached make the rice look like a small amount. There was little flavor in the rice but something I did not expect - a slight fish flavor in the rice. Every fork full (only a fork and napkin provided - I guess the spoon from the salsa can be used as double duty) tasted like fish. That was a big minus. Either they use a fish base as part of the rice cooking process, or the cook used the pot for fish and didn't wash the pot prior to cooking rice in it. Or he was using a spoon that he was using for fish as well. Either way, I don't find fish flavored rice appealing. The beans were not puree and also contained whole beans, but were bland. I ordered the tacos with corn tortillas because I like the tortillas a little crispy, but these were somewhat soft. The al pastor meat has plenty of sauce and was minced. The meat sauce was very average in flavor, hardly any spice. Maybe the meat needed salt, but it sure needed something. There were two squirt tubes for sauce on the table, one green and one red. I tried the green sauce, it was too creamy, wasn't spicy and didn't do anything for the tacos. I finally used the remainder of the red salsa from the chips. I was given a few tiny wedges of lime (probably sliced also for the bar drinks) for three tacos, another indication of portion control over focus. I took a photo of this meal, not for reviews, but to show my girlfriend who was out of town what I was eating since she hadn't been here either. So I looked at the photo before leaving, and I then noticed that there were NO onions on the tacos despite asking for onions and cilantro. The kitchen wasn't slammed, so I just chalked it off to further inattentiveness by the cook despite the server's instructions. That may have added to the lack of flavor of the tacos, but it was really the al pastor sauce and seasoning that didn't cut it. All in all, I was disappointed in the meal. I didn't go to my regular place just to give this place a try. It seems the ball was dropped at every turn for this very simple staple meal at a Mexican restaurant. I would give this place a 4 out of 10 for the reasons given above. I wouldn't go again. The food was not terrible, but lacking in flavor, and the cook was obviously not into what he was doing. There are other places close by where the food is superior to theirs.

That is, that the output can range from delicious to somewhat average (and sometimes overcooked), depending on what you order. For example the birria was super flavorful and served with very crisp tacos and a delicious consomme, but the cilantro-lime rice and refried beans felt like an afterthought. The smoked pork belly quesadillas had a great flavor and just about the right amount of fattiness that was short of perfection due to the pork being overcooked. The tres leches cake also had a great creaminess and flavor to it, but parts of the cake weren't really soaked in the milk at all, which created an inconsistent experience - depending on where I took the bite. On everything I tried though, the presentation was excellent and there were enough great things about each dish to overcome some of the shortfalls. Overall though, I feel with improved execution on ensuring that all elements of the dishes are equally good in terms of texture and flavor -- there's a lot to love about Ancho & Agave. But even in its current state, it's still an enjoyable spot to take a group of friends for tasty food in an impressive looking spot.

When we told our name for our reservation we were told it was going to be about 10 more minutes- even though the restaurant was half full. I was super confused because the entire bar was open and there were at least 10-12 open tables. The person checking us in goes "what you've never had that happen before?" - referring to having to wait for a table - SO incredibly off-putting and condescending. I told her she was being rude and she got defensive and giving us all these excuses- that the kitchen was backed up, etc. We immediately walked out. We were fine with the waiting but the way this employee handled things was insane. The way this should have been handled, and how it's handled in hundreds of other restaurants we've been to is: offer to sit us at the bar or ask if we want to get seated and then tell us there's a back up. or even say "I'm so sorry" Like at least show SOME hospitality. I emailed the location to say all of the above, and they did offer to send us something in the mail, but I will not be accepting. There are so many businesses in this area, go somewhere else that appreciates you as a customer.

Here are some quick thoughts on the items I tried: Honey Walnut Shrimp - Very generous amounts of shrimp which are large and have a good firmness. This is nice and crispy and the broccoli on the side is fresh. Dry chili chicken - One of many great versions of this dish you can get nearby. This was fairly crispy and not too spicy with a low amount of numbing oil. There was a good ratio of chicken versus chili in this dish. Sichuan string bean - Quite surprising, excellent flavor and the string beans were very fresh. This was packed with so much umami that it filled in the gap of another meat dish for me. Pea tips - I had the preparation with garlic and the flavor with excellent, with very good quality of vegetables as well. If I ate a fully vegetarian meal, I wouldn't mind having this with the string beans as both were super fresh and full of flavor. Fried fish with sweet sour sauce - This was presented in a very large portion size with tons of fish. This isn't as good as the expensive specialty ones you can get at some other restaurants, but definitely punches well above its weight given the price point. A must have for any lover of sweet and sour seafood as this really hits the spot for that specific crave. Braised pork belly - If I could order only one dish for a meal, this would be it. The meat is crazy tender and the sauce is super flavorful. This is one of the best options for comfort food you can get and you won't be disappointed. Overall, great food and a very nice setup. Bring a group if you can to try a variety of dishes. Make sure to come hungry as you'll get plenty of food no matter what you order.
