This place is a Palatine icon and my family loves coming here! I was in town visiting and when I said I would like Mexican for lunch, we had to come to Mexico Uno. They recently reprinted the menus (the food offerings are the same) and it's very colorful, matching the colorful, fun interior! There were three salsas ranging in heat, but I stuck to mild and medium- both delicious! My mom and I split the 3 taco dinner and got shrimp and fish tacos with rice and beans. Very tasty! Cute, clean, neighborhood restaurant with excellent service. The food was good and hot but uneventful. For my palate I felt the salsas were not very spicy, more of a neutral flavor. The chips were served hot as was one of the 3 salsas. We had the enchiladas verde with Chicken. The chicken was very moist but otherwise not seasoned. The burrito bowl with steak was plentiful but also lacked exciting flavor. So, if you need a Mexican restaurant for folks who don't like spicy, this is the place. Decent little joint for American style Mexican food. The nachos have American cheese on them, which is not a deal breaker for me - but definitely different. The margaritas are ok but they tasted like they came from a store bought mixer. I would like to try some of their other cocktails next time. The pitcher is definitely the way to go if you're going to have more than one drink - great deal! The shrimp tacos were good. I asked the server if they have any habanero or extra hot salsa because the ones they put on the table were pretty mild, and she really delivered! I would recommend asking for their extra hot salsa if you like heat. It was very good but not hot enough to burn your face off. The Pico de Gallo also had a nice little bit of heat. I'm happy I found them and decided to try them when I was in the area. The service is good and good tastes good. I ordered a strawberry margarita and it was very good. The salsa is good and comes with a warmed type of salsa (not my fave, but not horrible, pico and a typical red salsa (this was my fave). I ordered chicken fajitas and got a good amount of chicken and the rice was very good. My mom ordered steak tacos and a shredded chicken tostada and liked all of her food. Fairly standard mexican restaurant that I've gone to a few times mostly because of proximity. I got the chorizo Tostada, which was pretty standard and came with beans, making it a little more filling than ones I've had in the past. The chimichanga with cheese was tasty and good size for the price with a generous portion of meat - I got al pastor, which was done well. The steak quesadilla looked pretty good, but unfortunately I never got to try it since my son ate his own and then proceeded to eat mine before I got a chance, so I assume it was really good? I would recommend getting the appetizer or dinner portion rather than the a la carte order since it was on the smaller side, but I probably should have guessed. read more

I phoned in a Carry-Out Order for (1) Chicken Enchiladas Verdes Dinner and (2) Steak Taco's, (A La Carte) the order was $26.00 ~ WOW! I got home and the Enchiladas was a Red Sauce, not Green, terrible, very try, and the rice was really dry, not tasty at all!! Looking so forward to this dinner, and completely disappointed me, after many years enjoying their Carry-Outs! and will have to think twice on returning back for another try! read more

Picked up from this place few times before and the food was very promising, so decided to step by for a dinner on a weekday night. First, the thing I liked best was the service. It wasn't quite busy there at the moment, but they weren't short handed and could've cover even if all tables get taken. Although we had a dedicated server, others also offered help with refills and other immediate needs. Everyone looked happy and friendly and that's what I like, you guys rock! Again, the food was great as I expected. Complimentary tortillas came with 3 side salsas: tomato, pickled veggies and pico de gallo - all of these were legit. I got my favorite Chiles Rellenos, while my girlfriend went with Tostadas; check both out on the pics below. All of these were freshly made, super flavorful and very tasty. Kitchen 5 stars too, no questions asked. What I will have a question about though, is a Margarita. Using drink mix in a Mexican Place is outrageous! This has to be authentic! This is your national drink guys, you have to fix this! Moreover, we're talking about the place with a full-size bar, not just someone pouring in the back... One more detail, the interior does look a little outdated... Not sure how old this place is, but I think its a right time to implement some small cosmetic changes. I've been here a few times before but never reviewed it. Mexico Uno is a little of the beaten track - on a side street off of Palatine Road in downtown Palatine. So, if you don't know where to look, make sure to google the address or check the yelp map. This time, we met friends who had dinner there already. We joined them for Margueritas. There were a few chips left over and some salsa, so we nibbled some too. Their Margaritas are okay. I'm not sure if they use a mix or they make them fresh. They had a little bit of a metallic taste to them, but they were strong. I think that made up for it. When we have been there before, the food has always been consistently good and the service very good. We are not "regulars" here, but go at least a few times a year. Let me preface this by saying I like my Mexican food pure Mexican, which means fresh and simple ingredients. The wait staff here are really nice and take care of you, so the service is great! It was just the food that was a bit of a let down. The chips and salsas (you get three when you sit down) were fresh and quick. I had ordered their enchiladas verde. I chose the chicken filled ones, as I felt like having chicken. The enchiladas were stuffed with chicken, and the salsa was good. However, the rice and beans were bland and nothing special. What really bummed me out is that a lot of their food is "American style," meaning some menu items had American cheese on them. Tacos came with lettuce, tomato, and cheese instead of the onion and cilantro. Overall, I would try this place again, as the enchiladas were good, but I just wish for more authentic choices. read more

Small family owned and run authentic jewel tucked in downtown Palatine. This is a must try place. Very quaint, extremely friendly family there to greet you as you walk in. 3 Home made salsas arrive at your table, chips are warm... and they'll bring more if you ask. So nice since everyone is charging for everything from bread , to even making reservations !!! Move on to a pitcher of yummy Margaritas!! We love them there , so tasty. The food , so in my opinion ... the food is so delicious, everything is homemade. Excellent authentic Mexican food. It comes out quick and hot! I had plans to meet friends in the area for dinner, so I suggested Mexico Uno based on the great reviews I read and I saw that they were featured on Chicago's Best a few years ago (and the fact that they were open, because I swear most restaurants in Palatine are closed on Mondays!). I have to be honest, I was a little disappointed. My experience did not live up to the hype I read. It's a small, family owned restaurant which I knew, so no surprise there. There were only a few groups in on a Monday night, so we were given a table for 7 people right away. Our waitress was nice and prompt, although it took a little while to take our first drink order. We started with chips, salsa, and guac. The chips were good, but not the best I'd ever had. I liked the salsa, but was confused by the combination we were given. That may have just been because I missed the explanation of salsas though, since they were on the table before I got there. We were given about six salsa cups and half were junky and half were watery. A couple were spicy while the others were mild. They all were pretty good (my favorite being the spicier ones), but again, not the best salsa I've ever had. The guacamole was oddly flavorless. We finished the tiny serving we ordered, but there just wasn't too much to the guac. I'm not sure exactly what the issue was though. The basket of chips were small. I'm talking like 10 chips small. Of course our waitress was happy to refill them whenever we wanted, I just thought the size was a bit odd. To eat I had the enchiladas verdes with chicken. Typically when you go to an authentic Mexican place you are given a huge plate with large enchiladas, tons of rice an beans, and toppings like lettuce and tomato. This entree was like half the size. Granted, what I ate was probably a regular sized portion for someone to consume, so I'm actually not upset about that. I cleaned my whole plate and felt perfectly content rather than stuffed. Plus, the meal was only $9.50 so the portion seemed fair. The enchiladas were good, but again just lacked some serious flavor. The star of the show here were the margaritas. Our table of 7 split a couple pitchers - one with lime on the rocks and one strawberry frozen. I really like the lime on the rocks and they went down easy. The margs were strong, but not in a gross overbearing way. They had a nice flavor and I appreciated that they were super sweet like some of those pre-mixes can be. Overall, I thought this was an okay spot to grab Mexican food with friends. You can't beat the prices and Mexico Uno is conveniently located near the train station for any friends coming in from the city. I've been dining here for the last 15 years! The food's very flavorful and authentic (I took my Mexican friends here for dinner multiple times --they definitely vouch for this place)! I usually order the House Special Dinners, like the lengua, parilla, and birria! I also love the tostadas, flautas and the Huevos Rancheros! Another thing I LOVE about Mexico Uno is that you can order Menudo every day (most restaurants only serve it on weekends, which really annoys TF outta me)! Plus, I love that their Menudo also comes with pozole in it--So, I always include it in all my orders! The service is great too--both dine-in and take out; It's quick, efficient, friendly and professional! I love how the restaurant's walls are now mostly painted white (they used to be dark brown)! So now, the inside looks more airy and has a more relaxing vibe to it! I will definitely keep coming back here for my Mexican food cravings!!!! read more

My husband and I have been customers for years. What we really like about Mexico Uno is that the food is very authentic, not to mention delicious. I especially like their fish tacos which are much better than those I have ordered elsewhere. The tamales are homemade and always get rave reviews from everyone who dines there. The chef is very accommodating - I am kind of like Sally in "When Harry Met Sally" and sometimes make requests that aren't exactly on the menu. The particular thing I order there required a little innovation at first (didn't realize it at the time), but they made it perfectly for me every time and actually tried it for themselves. The other thing that keeps us coming back are the friendly owners and servers. When you are there, you feel like you're with family. Hello friends This was a cute little Mexican restaurant that I looked up. What you see is what you get but the food I have to say was pretty good! To be honest it was not on the level of when I was in Mexico City and also stayed in Cuernavaca, But pretty close! what pushed it over the top was the excellent service that the ladies displayed and knew their menu extremely well; so if you are a first time visitor like I was they got your back and will be extremely helpful.
