I stumbled upon this beauty on accident. Driving past Joshua tree, I saw the sign that read "BOOKS" on the side of the road and had to make an immediate U-turn. I am so glad I went in! It was way more than what I had expected! At first glance it seems like it's the tiniest thing, but once you start wandering through you'll notice that there are so many sections with tons and tons of all sorts of books, new and used! I only had a limited amount of time so I had to rush through but I was still able to find 3 books for myself... all used but in GREAT condition. $15 for all 3! The owner of the shop was also amazing... super warm and welcoming! This will definitely not be my last time visiting the store because I plan to return on my next trip back to Joshua tree :) read more

I was extremely disappointed in this bookstore due to their scam like behavior. I was in JT for my birthday and my partner knows how much I love bookstores so he took me here as it wasn't far from our Airbnb. I didn't want to leave without a book, but couldn't really find anything that stood out to me. I love supported local spots like these. I found a tiny little $3.95 book I thought could be fun. The sticker on the back reported that the $3.95 was as of 2018. However, when we checked out, the woman at the register just said she would charge the penciled in price of $7.95 which was dated 2007. It just felt like we were taken advantage of and I didn't want to say anything. In retrospect, I wish I had just said I didn't want it, but I didn't want to stir anything up. If any of my fellow yelpers make it to this place, check it out if interested, but be cautious and ask ahead of purchasing which price(s) they will charge you for each of their books. read more

This book store is the real deal. Run by book lovers, there are so many treasures in this magical space that just keeps revealing more and more shelves. It's like being in the library at Hogwarts. They are kind and take books off your hands too for store credit. A book lovers gem in the desert. read more

What a lovely treasure this bookshop is! An enormous variety of books in all shapes, sizes and subjects. I found 3 Tony Hillerman's I hadn't read, and because it was a flying visit, I only glanced at the large, tempting selections on California history, desert and wildlife. This is the place to spend a couple of hours in peace and quiet with the very well informed librarian. Highly recommended. I especially liked the fact that there are a couple of copies of many of the books both in hard cover and paperback. read more

I really like this book store, it's a little unorganized but the owner is working on it as she purchased the store from someone else. you can get lost in here for hours. It looks small from the outside but once you get in there are hallways leading to the back area where there are shelves and shelves of books. They also have rare books if you take the time to look you will definitely find some treasures. My daughter loves the little kid section, although it is quite small, she would have me sit there with here forever and just read all the books if I let her. The owner is very kind. Note: As of yesterday (10/2/10), this place is for sale, and the owner seems eager to unload it. It was a decent browse. But the collection seems like it should be culled a bit -- there are too many books taking up space that are the kind of outdated (not timeless) junk that you can't imagine anybody actually buying (e.g. AAA travels guides from the 80s, 70s books on ESP, some textbooks in not-good condition). Of course, there are good finds too: my traveling companion picked up a poetry collection he'd been looking for. But if you only have time for one used bookstore in this area, I recommend the Sagebrush Press Book Store in Yucca Valley. read more

Ravens Bookshop is still open, but only on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. It's also still for sale, and the owner jokes (or is he serious?) that you get the inventory too. It's a well-stocked place, full of all sorts of books, organized by categories but a bit of a jumble within those categories and very, very dusty. There are lots of mass-market paperbacks but also tons of old classics and pretty high-brow works. I found two fairly esoteric translations of literary works from Edo-era Japan. I wasn't looking for current books, but it looks a little skimpy on those (though I did see some Twilight titles). If you're an Edgar Rice Burroughs fan, they have a huge collection of old titles, both paperbacks and hardbacks. read more

Raven's Book Shoppe is a treasure trove! My boyfriend and I decided to stop in here on a whim and we were so glad we did. We thought we'd have a quick peek and ended up staying for well over an hour. The place is absolutely packed with books! All kinds of stuff, and pretty well-organized by subject, too. It's so peaceful inside--great to browse and just lose yourself in all the twists and turns of the place, looking high and low for the expected and the totally unusual. We were sucked in by the extensive sci-fi section--incredible selection of retro sci-fi to be found here! I've always driven by this place and wondered what it was like inside. It looks so random and sketchy looking from the outside that I was nervous to go in. However, once day I put my big girl panties on and decided to go in and have a look around. I'm glad that I did. There are so many books. The owner has them pretty well organized. It's a little overwhelming when you first walk in. I looked for about 5 minutes before I decided I'd be better off asking the owner where my genre was. She was able to lead me through the maze of books to my section where I found a lot of good books. Then I wondered around checking out the other sections. There is literally something for everyone. There are bibles, sci-fi, romance, history, horror, cultural and everything in between. There are old books and then new books. There were some new Stephen Kings, Dean Koontz, Sherrilyn Kenyon, and George R.R. Martin. I can't believe it took me so long to go in there. I will definitely be popping in from time to time to see what's new. read more

I've come here a lot over the years, now less then I would like because my work hours clash with their business hours. But I love this place, great deals, and a supply that is better then the 29 palms library. I own a lot of books, and probably half of what I own has come from Ravens. Stopped by this cute little book shop on my way to Joshua Tree...only, it's not so little: the interior is an awesome labyrinth of books! If you love books you might be as delightfully overwhelmed by the towering shelves of books as I was. The attendant was extremely helpful and nice and I would definitely come back. A little gem in the desert. Stayed in 29 Palms last w/e for my wife's birthday & she forgot her book for the trip. Googled this place & went to take a look. There are a load of books, lots of variety, they seemed to be in generally good condition and (perhaps?) unexpectedly well organized for a used book store off the beaten track. The owner assisted us and we both found books by authors we were looking for within 5 minutes. Great condition and bargain prices! Could not ask for more. read more

Going in to look at all the little cubbies filled with books and overflows of books in the building could keep you busy all day just browsing.
