This place is very nice. I don't live close enough to it to enjoy it, as much as I want. I actually don't drink much coffee, because I don't like it. However, friends and family enjoy their coffee very much. I don't mind buying the coffee when I do go. Normally, I will just buy a tea or something other than coffee. Yes, there are places that make good tea and places that make bad tea (such as Starbucks). Really, I just enjoy going to sit in a quiet spot and socializing. I also enjoy their pastries, which are top notch. This is a much better experience than going to some crowded place like Dunkin Donuts or Starbucks and overpaying for burnt coffee that leaves a bitter taste in your mouth. read more

I really liked Raven's Nest. My mother-in-law was in the hospital and we had only but a few minutes to grab some coffee and breakfast to go and some snacks for her. We were able to get some teas/coffees, breakfast croissants, pastries, and a delicious salad. The barista/server was very nice and helpful and was patiently waiting while I thought about all of the things I wanted. I was also able to check-in and get 10% off which is always a bonus. I'm not often in culpeper but its good to know a place like this exists... I will say that not many of the places near there have so many options... so take advantage. read more

This is a really nice coffee place to grab a light bite on a Saturday morning, which is exactly what we did. The place has a cozy atmosphere and a lot of people were working on their laptops too. In my opinion, They don't have a lot of options for food. Also, I felt the price was slightly on the higher side given the portion sizes. We were a group of about 7 and we were all famished. I liked what I was eating, but wished there was more of it. The person at the counter was really nice. Really easy to talk to and friendly. He made nice patterns on our coffees. We went to this place for breakfast the morning after a hike in SNP. This place is in the middle of the historic Culpepper downtown. We had a relaxing time here. This place had a handful of options out of which I chose a Southern Chicken Salad on greens and a Latte. The portion sizes were not too big but it was satisfying and just the right amount of food before a long drive back home. The salad tasted fresh and nice. I felt the food was slightly overpriced. I hate to write this because the people seem nice and I love local places instead of the usual Starbucks, but I have to report when my experience was so bad. Four of us went with the thought of having hot drinks on a cold, rainy evening and playing a quick board game on the comfy couch. The decor was lovely and I was looking forward to spending time there, but the woman behind the counter let us know that they were closing in 5 minutes (at 5 pm). Disappointing, but we were ok and ordered the drinks to go. For four of their smallest drinks we were out $15, which seemed high, but figured we would get something great for the value. Wrong. Drinking my chai latte, I wondered if it was just a weak chai, or if she used green tea without realizing it. It was bitter and thin, and even though I saw her use milk, it seemed like she used skim for all four of us when only one ordered it. Maybe she didn't just want to heat more milk since it was so close to closing, but jeez. The girls who ordered the hot chocolate reported the same taste, bitter and thin and wholly unsatisfying. They actually added a packet of Swiss Miss to the beverage to make it drinkable when we got back. All this would lead me to a two star rating, but I'm giving it one star because one of the girls found a FINGERNAIL at the bottom of her hot chocolate. After spending all that time and effort to get it down, that was her reward. SO disgusting. We will not be going back, I'm sorry to say. read more

I stopped here after ferrying an airplane to the local airport. The place was a half block from the Amtrak station (for my trip back). I first had a latte and selected strawberry pie for dessert. Both were made well. The pie was of the style of rhubarb pie; not canned strawberry filling. Both were offered on real dishes. They keep a supply of plain paper plates for microwave (no plastic) with which to warm the pie. Since I had a bit longer to wait, I got an iced mocha. Also well-made. They pour coffee into the ice cube trays; the server said so as not to dilute the iced coffee. The place has a couple of outside tables, which seems to attract dog walkers who want to sit with their dogs on the two days in VIrginia when it's not too hot or too rainy. It's a nice place to stop on the way to/from the train. read more

Coffee house/cafe with great fresh brewed coffees, DELICIOUS scones and pie! Friendly service. My fiance and I go frequently after the gym on Sunday mornings for a cup of coffee or two and a scone to share. The scones are warm and soft with sweet icing, delcious. The guy that works Sunday mornings is really nice and friendly. I've gone in the afternoon after work and have been served by a lady that is equally friendly, so it seems like they pride themselves on great service and having helpful folks behind the counter. I like that they make ice cubes with their extra coffee, if you want your coffee cool you can ask them for these special cubes and your coffee doesn't get watered down. The Raven's Nest is so cozy and has a ton of places to sit, which is atypical for almost coffee shops. The space is excellent and allows for conversation, work and relaxation. Let me start by saying it's more of a solid 3.5. This has become a halfway meeting point for my sister and I and I've been a couple of times. Here's the nitty-gritty... Location: We love meeting up here! The coffee shop is located in a charming historic building and has maintained many of its features including an exposed brick wall. We like that it's towards the end of Davis Street near the train station and LOVE sign. The blue Adirondack chairs out front are the perfect place to lounge with a tasty treat from inside. Coffee: The selection is pretty wide including all of the standard coffee shop lattes, etc. Each time I tried a different espresso drink and have just determined I am not a fan of the bean/roast they use. It's a little on the weaker side. Pricing was typical of this type of establishment. Other drinks/snacks: My sister has had their peach smoothie during both visits and really raved about them. We have also tried scones and muffins and all were decent but nothing spectacular. Service: The barista was friendly and efficient running the whole show by herself during both of our trips. Good thing there wasn't too much of a rush or things could have gotten sticky. Bottom line: We'll probably continue to visit during our halfway sister gatherings and will try different items until we find something we love. Pop in if you're shopping Davis Street. read more

Been stopping at this spot fairly regularly for the past two years. Great homemade food and great coffee. Favorite dishes include the smoked salmon bagel or French toast casserole for breakfast, the southern chicken salad if going for lunch, and the scones for anytime of day. The staff are the most consistently friendly people I've ever met in food service. You'll notice they have a lot of regulars and are deeply connected to the community. It gets busy on Saturday mornings so some patience may be needed, but the staff keep things moving. Some people mention pricing--they may seem higher on some items, but overall they aren't really out of line of what the larger coffee chains charge--and the quality and experience is much better. read more

Whenever, and I mean every time, I'm in Culpeper on Davis St, I stop in for a coffee here. I think it's for two reasons. One: it's a hell of a great coffee house making great coffee and offering sweets to beat the demons. Two: It's not Starbucks. It's the type of building you want to be a coffeehouse. It's old and brick and wood, with large windows, comfy seats, worn wood counters, antiques, vintage brass post boxes stuck in the wall from some by-gone era. It's a bit awkwardly arranged, but then so are most of the great coffee houses in the world. The coffee is as good as you'll get anywhere really. It might not be the single best cup of coffee I've ever had, but it doesn't need to be. When was S'Bucks the best coffee you've had? Odds are, never. So, when in Culpeper, drive down Main St, turn onto Davis St, find a spot to park, walk along the south side of the street, and somewhere right around the old hardware store, you'll find a great cup of coffee and really nice people waiting for you. I have been to several coffeehouses from Greece to the USA and to the Middle East. I think that the key to a successful local Coffee Shop is a "warm and cozy" feel, which is why I don't typically frequent a Starbucks unless I have to. For example, I don't visit McDonald's unless I'm on I-81 and there's no other option so the same with Starbucks. So anyhow, the Raven's Nest in Culpeper, VA. I have been here three times and I like to give a place the courtesy of at least three visits before I write any kind of review. So, after three visits here are my overall thoughts. Upon entering my first impression was how nice everything looked. There's local bands selling CD's on the counter, local artists on display on the brick walls and just a nice overall local feeling. There are pews, a couch and plenty of tables to sit at as well as outdoor sitting as well. The outdoor seating is nice as Culpeper has made strides in the last 20 years to restore the whole area, I looked over their menu which can be found behind the counter on the far wall. They also have a small flavor menu on the counter as well, I don't know about you but I like being able to have the whole menu right there in front of me and easy to spot. But they have a great selection from Mocha's to Breve's and cappuccinos. I ordered a Peppermint White Mocha Breve and it was perfect. I like the hint of a taste in my coffee not a lollipop. The staff was great, I like the way they interact with their customers in a friendly way - which is a complete opposite from most corporate coffee shops where there's a lot of teens who work behind the counter and when you walk in you get the feeling as if you're an inconvienece. BUt at the Ravens' Nest I have never felt that way and I like that. The Pews are nice to sit on which is where I like to go as there's a nice view of the store from there. Also the newspaper is laid out right there so you can catch up on all the local stuff. Overall I think this place deserves a 4/5 and the only thing I think that could be changed is the way the music is done. I heard a lot of musical varieties and it'd be nice to know who's playing.Yet that does not diminish my view of the place, it is nice and I appreciate the local feel. read more
