Good haircut and highlights - terrible communication about the cost. If you want to spend lots of money on your curly hair for a good cut - not amazing, not great, this is the place to go. Don't expect clear communication about the pricing. Instead of being told what I was going to pay, I was asked twice if I had read the website. The website includes photos, and four tabs. One of the tabs is services and that does include pricing. The fault is mine for not reading more carefully. That being said, the person doing my service literally never said a number. If you are willing to charge that much, you should be willing to say it out loud to your client. I was told I had to submit a deposit for half of my appointment. When I looked back, I only had to submit a deposit of $89 which was half of my $178 for partial highlights. This didn't help me to realize I'd be charged an extra $550 for my haircut. It was a cruel shock to leave with my hair looking nice to realize my total for the day was $728. Again, the fault is mine for not reading all of the website more carefully, but I hope no one else has to have this cruel shock. This salon is not willing to use spoken words to convey their fees. I went here the first time for a Yelp Event it was so crowded and busy that I could not really get a feel for what Raw was all about. Then I came back for a second smaller more intimate Yelp event and got to see first hand what Raw service is all about. I was so impressed at the second event that I made an appointment on the spot. The service is always excellent. Everyone one the staff is always so cheerful and happy. They always greet me by name and treat me like I am a very important client. They make me feel special. The price of the haircuts are very reasonable and they do a great job. Never rushed. Then add the complimentary shoulder and head massage and the mini facials and I feel like I've gone to heaven. Anna is absolutely crushing it at Raw. She has COVID standards and top notch care down at raw from ensuring social distancing when needed but usually only having one client in at time. She thoroughly is cleaning stuff between customers. Now that the COVID stuff is behind the real thing that matters is her pro skills!! I came in wanting to go blonde and get a nice fade. Being military I can't go platinum like the main COVID hype has been but it has to be semi natural. Being the rebel I am trying to push it and go as blonde as possible cause we all know blondes have more fun. I have gone to her three times now and each color has been slightly different but that's because we are working to the color I truly want and hot dang we finally found it. She crushed each color adjusting with my terrible input and thoughts that can't express it. Through it all she has dissected my rumblings and found the beautiful light blonde within me. That mixed with the fade she gives is incredible. Most haircuts they chop the top off when I'm trying to grow it but Anna just adds that texture and layer I want and is crushing my hair. I booked an appointment through Yelp which seemed odd but on the confirmation email it said it uses Vagaro, which I'm used to using for hair appointments. My email from yelp said that the appointment had been confirmed for the specific date and time so I showed up, and it turns out they were closed that day. I drove 30 minutes there and back for nothing. When I called to see what was going on I was told that they were closed and my appointment was pending not confirmed. I booked almost a week ago so if they were closed and my appointment was pending then it should have been declined so I could at least get some notification not to show up. Ok, I have only written one yelp review and it was negative. So I guess I need to balance that out. Here it is... I am Aveda-obsessed, so naturally I stalk every Aveda salon to find my next hair home. I have gone from cherry red to the platinum I have now. Unfortunately, I went to hotbox for the first year I lived in San Antonio (read on). & then I stumbled across Raw Hair Studio & I am beyond thankful I did. If you have any doubts...COME HERE! First, they do a consult where they treat you just like you're getting your hair done with the pampering and drinks (I chose champagne, of course). But they also give you a quote and my quote was spot on to the very dollar. Most places won't do that & will give you an estimate instead. Second, they are a part of the Aveda rewards program where you earn points for every product you purchase. Not every salon is & the rewards are worth it. Third, and the most important...my first hair appointment. My stylist was Naomi and she was nothing short of caring and talented. I first arrived and we began to talk about my hair. I asked her about the baby hairs in the nape of my neck and if it was breakage or just my small hairs. She said it was mostly breakage. Now normally I wouldn't think anything of this because going platinum takes tolls on ones hair. But then Ana (I think, sp?), the manager, causally mentioned if my prior stylist would overlay/overlap my bleach. I was confused but explained that my prior stylist would bleach not only my roots but also my whole head of hair and put it in a wet little bun at the top of my head. They were horrified. They couldn't understand why he would do something against his training and expertise. I also mentioned that he would massage the bleach into my hair and let sit (wo a cap) until it basically foamed. Continuously, I would leave hotbox with a red scalp and days later 'scabs' would begin to fall off-basically, really thick chunks of scalp/dandruff. Well I am not trained and I did not know this wasn't supposed to happen. I just thought, hey that's the pain of wanting to be platinum ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ . Little did I know how close I was so many times to losing my whole head of hair. With that in mind, Naomi was so thoughtful in every step of the (5 hour) process. She was honest about my damage and about the goals of my hair. She told me I needed a cut and suggested the best cut for my hair. She also talked about products I should have been using this whole time to protect my hair. All while not being demanding or pushy, but genuinely concerned and informative. When she turned my chair around to see my final hair, I teared up. I never cry over my hair, ever. But it just looked so shiny, so healthy, so natural, and so beautiful. My scalp didn't burn once and I left with no redness or irritation on my scalp. I could go on about the details, but I'll spare you if you made it to here. Wow! Roxi has been my stylist for almost a year now, and I just got some amazing face framing highlights. Let me tell you, I am very particular about my hair and use to pay $80 for a basic haircut somewhere else. I really love coming to Raw Hair. My fiancé and I are getting married in just a few short weeks. She wanted to make a change to her naturally brown hair and the first photo is what we ended up with. Her hair came out with a yellow tint, multiple streaked, chunky highlights, and it just looked and felt completely dried out. I did not receive a phone call two nights before, I did not receive services on the 19th and I didn't even have an idea or know what a balayage was until the appointment when the stylist and I talked about how to color my hair. Also, I'm just trying to share with fellow yelpers what I experienced. I kinda felt like the buisness felt the need to justify and point out to everyone what I should have known or checked with yelp email or how quickly I should have wrote a review to bring to their attention. Lastly, I do reviews for fellow yelpers to read and consider, not to complain to a business. As I noted before, lots of people DO rave on their grand treatment here. Love love love Raw Hair Studio! Came here for the second time today and I had a great experience both times. My daughter & I both got our hair done by Aaliyah, my mom as well and she did amazing! I would highly recommend her. She is very talented, super sweet, and will do all she can to make sure you are a happy customer. The service here is great, Mercedes is so sweet as well and very helpful. The hair studio is very cute and homey and very clean. They even give you a complimentary head massage before they start and your choice of water, champagne, or hot tea. So Relaxing. My daughter loved it here as well. We had an appointment scheduled at 1 and they got started not long after, they even squeezed in a waxing for her. AMAZING experience!!! From the adorable building, friendly staff, and non-stop pampering this salon went above and beyond my expectations(and with as unruly as my hair is, trust me I've been to a lot). I was drawn to this salon after searching for "curly hair salon" in the San Antonio area, and after reading several reviews and noticing they do dry haircutting(which I prefer for my tight curls) I decided to check out Raw. When I entered the door I was greeted by a staff member named Sandy she seated me and treated me to a exceptional complimentary head massage while I waited to meet my stylist. Next, I was greeted by my stylist Norma, who listened to EVERYTHING I asked for.. I stated that the ends of my hair where lighter than the rest of my hair quite noticeably and that I wanted to blend the two colors, and that It was very important to me to keep my length as I was in need of cutting off the damaged ends. She shaped my hair wonderfully and then that's when I met Mari and Mercedes who brought me water and tea and began in dying my massive amount of hair. Lol. At the shampoo bowl Norma applied a dry masque treatment after listening to my needs when I stated my hair has been very dry. In the meantime I received an exceptionally complimentary hand massage by Mari. I felt so relaxed! Lastly, I met again with Norma who applied product to my hair while giving me aveda product recommendations for my hair type. The final condition of my hair was everything I asked for and more-- it felt soft, it was voluminously, it was still long, and the color was blended! I felt and looked like Beyoncé, lol. For these reasons I couldn't help but get out of my chair and giving Norm a a hug! She was incredible, she made me feel pampered as this visit my a treat to myself for my birthday... And I know the salon was busy, never once did I feel rushed or forgotten. I also received an Aveda freebie just for checking in on yelp! It doesn't get better than that! Hands down, this has been the best salon experience I've ever had. I was so fortunate to have Alex do my hair. I brought in several pictures because I had an idea of what I wanted but I wasn't certain. I was completely open to her expertise to guide me as to what would look best & she totally did. She was so patient & she actually listened to what I wanted. I love that she gave me different options with different prices BEFORE she did anything. The whole process took several hours but I didn't mind because she explained everything she was doing step by step. Another thing that was so refreshing about the place was the strong sense of teamwork! It wasn't until I was halfway through my appointment that I realized the person doing my color recently graduated school (judging by our conversation and the owner's relentless guidance). I feel this should've been disclosed when making the appointment, I would've politely declined, half price is still more than the majority of professionals charge in the city. The balayage has obvious technique flaws; chunky areas and quite a lot of lightner bleeds which appear bright orange, what you'd expect from someone who is learning. However, I did not agree to be anyone's dummy and I will be filing an official complaint with Aveda and the better business bureau. read more

I booked an appointment online for a baylage service. they called me back and left a message saying they wanted to "ask me some questions" before my appointment. So I called them back and the receptionist proceeded to tell me I need a consulation before any baylage services. That would cost $40... just for the consult, and it wouldn't go towards the cost of the service. Then she said I had to put a $70 deposit down at the time of the consult. Sooo $110 before anything is EVER done to my hair? Wow how ridiculous. I have been to high quality salons before and have never run into such a policy as this. In San Antonio on a last minute travel. I didn't have time to get me hair done before I left home. Did some reviews in Yelp and made appointment with Rox. I had pictures of what I wanted which was a lot of chocolate brown ( natural hair color but old highlights turned red) and highlights on the ends. I told her I need a grey patch covered up and that was important . Roxi was the stylist. Did Bayalage and my hair was blonde and a ball of frizzy mess. Went back the next day and they but a darker toner on it. It was better but still nothing like what I wanted. It was the worst experience that I have had. They make you sign a contract and charge you for a test to see how your hair will turn. Roxi charged me for a hair cut that she spent all of 3 min on. My hair wasn't even in the front or the back. Total cost $424.00 Had to wait to get back home to my regular hair stylist to get it fixed. I spent another $210.00 to get my hair what I wanted. Omg this salon is the WORST salon I have ever been to! I will NEVER set foot in it again. I was there from 10am until 7:30 pm just to get my roots done!!!! I had 4 different stylist doing my hair INCLUDING the owner of the place and they still managed to ruin my hair and make it orange instead of blonde. They knew they messed up my hair so badly they said they wouldn't charge me a thing and wanted me to go back in a few days so they can fix it . BUT I was there for 9 1/2 hours!!! What makes me think going back another day will fix my roots??? Ridiculous place!! I ended up going to the store and buying a color box and I fixed it myself!! How sad is that??!!! Every single person here is so kind and goes out of their way to make sure you have an enjoyable, relaxing experience. I'm a college student and was stressing about an upcoming assignment this past visit. Fantastic service from Mary the minute I walked in. I felt welcomed and pampered during my entire visit. Chelsea gave me a great cut too! Looking forward to coming back in four weeks! I was offered a drink in the lobby before Chelsea came in to introduce herself. She was very attentive and patient and very clear that she wanted me to be happy. To get things rolling, Chelsea gave me a relaxing scalp message. I could have fallen asleep right there in the chair. Throughout the cut she made sure to ask my thoughts and to see if I had questions. Near the end I was taken over for a shampoo, hot face towel and hand\forearm massage. Very nice. The place is clean and smells really nice. They have gift cards and small gifts if you need to pick up a present (like I did) on your way out. What I love about Raw is the high regard given to the customer which includes appointment reminders by email and text...I appreciate that having come from a salon with no tech, no credit cards, no reward system; you were lucky just to be considered a customer. LOVE the way Raw has treated me...complementary scalp massage, facials, hand massage...just incredible. My stylist is Rox. I like her as a person and even more the way she has re-styled my hair. Anna the owner first cut my hair when she was still a stylist at K.Charkes and company. She did a great job and her talent was apparent even then. She also cut it again in 2010 when she remedied a self inflected hair cut. She won me over then and so I revisited her at her own salon on San Pedro. She got me blonde and did numerous touch ups that summer. I recall spending a ton of money that summer. Once fall began approaching I explained to her how I wanted to slowly but surely go darker. I basically didn't want to lose all the money and time we incurred getting it so light. I explained I wanted to go strawberry blonde, I imagined a light reddish pink, but instead my hair was colored violet. She could tell I wasn't happy, but offered no remedy. I basically paid the cost and left. When I called her to cut my hair, she basically told me that she couldn't bc of my attitude of not liking what she did. This struck me as odd, because I though I was the client and had a right to share my thoughts and concerns, it in this case just be disappointed. She never made an attempt to fix it or offer some sort of compensation. Nope, instead she turned this around on me, and me feel like she was holding her services and talent hostage. Because I struggle with OCD, and Anna gives great cuts, I felt I had to do whatevever it took to make her willing to cut my hair. So I went by salon, gifteda bottle of wine, and pretty much begged her to give me...me a second chance- yet all the while thinking to myself, "have I really sunk this low that I have to beg someone to do business with me?" After groveling, her response to me was, "I'll think about it and let you know!" After a few days, she called and left a vm stating she would take me again. To be honest, this made me feel relieved, yet questioning my judgement. I mean who makes you jump through hoops like this for a non relational relationship. Needles to say my Grandfather passed the day before and I became engulfed in planning his funeral and consoling my Mother. I too, fell into a dark place as he practically raised me. I honestly forget to make calling her back a priority, and when I remembered a week later, I was too fearful to call knowing I'd probably be subject to another strip down of my dignity. So I let it go and sought services somewhere else. Fast forward 6 years later: I recently went short, and wanted to revisit her and her talent(which I've always stated she has lots of). Honestly, I was a bit weary reaching out but figured it had been 6 years, and she could not be still harboring a grudge Again, one in which I will always question it's (the grudge) validity. Called up and spoke with Jennifer, who was an angel. Her empathy and kindness resonated through the phone. I explained my haircut situation and she scheduled me. I was nervous, but still excited to move on and get a great haircut. But that excitement was shortlived. The night before I was to get my haircut, Jennifer called and regretfully told me Ana could not take me. I told Jennifer this saddened me because I thought that after 6 years she could move on from whatever it is (which I'm still trying to figure out) I did to her. I understand terminating a toxic business relationship, but this unfortunately isn't that. This appears to be an ego trip gone terribly wrong. "I'm the one in power with all the talent and accolades, so therefore don't you dare question my magic!" This attitude does not reflect what she states are the Salon's core values, with the most important being Love. Love does not treat people this way. Love forgives. Love moves on. Love does not make people feel like that are less. Again, if someone is treating you in a way that is unhealthy that's one thing, but this is just so unfathomable. If we are truly embedded in Love, then we do not keep records of wrong in this manner. She is very successful right now, and that is great...very well earned I'm sure. But what good is it to gain the whole world and lose your empathy. Plato said it best. Be kind for everyone is fighting a hard battle. - Clean and beautiful studio. - $55 for a first time customer is a fantastic price... So Rox is great at cutting hair but missed the mark on what I wanted. - Booking online is super convenient I came in my military uniform and I'm beating myself for forgetting to bring civilian clothes to change into because I had a feeling that the uniform would influence the stylist...(sigh) I was unfortunately right. I absolutely detest the standard military bob that's why I showed a picture of very textured and layered hairstyle and I explained I wanted the length to be angled. She asked me if I was sure and that's when I knew the uniform was already affecting her judgment on my own judgement (sigh). At the end I said I loved it to save face... - I did not the get the dramatice angle bob I wanted, the length is almost the same all around. - There was"some" texturing at the top but none underneath. - The volume in my hair is mostly going towards the bottom because the layers underneath is all the same length instead of a thinned out textured layers. - I didn't ask for blending in the back but this is standard thing to do for military bobs. It's clear in the picture that there isn't any blending but that that textured layers are in the back but I got a VERY HIGH BLENDED cut.... The receptionist said, "It's the popular military haircut the girls come in for!" That's all I needed to hear for the final nail to shut the coffin. I came in with ~15 inches of hair, which is more than ideal to get the textured layers I wanted. Paying $55 for a cut I could of gotten for $20 in base makes me down right pissed. Now I will need to wait for my hair to grow maybe 4 inches to get it fixed. I'm livid that at 1:01AM I'm editing this review. read more

This place is really cute and smells AMAZING. You get two complimentary treatments with your haircut, such as scalp massages, aromatherapy, etc. I would go back to sit and smell the place. The customer service there is amazing, everyone is really friendly and helpful and seem happy to be at work. Carol was fantastic! Very meticulous and detail-oriented. Didn't feel rushed. I could honestly exclaim "I love it!" when she was done, and didn't need to ask for any last-minute detail fix-ups. She was as great as senior stylists I've paid way more for at other salons in the past. I expected to pay $55 as a new client and put a $20 tip on top of that, but I was surprised when I went to pay and was told they are a no-tip salon. Booked my mom to come here next because I'm sure she will love it too. Would def recommend this place when you want to send someone to get pampered and have a nice treat. From the moment you walk in you're pampered with a complimentary scalp massage, and you can sip from a fresh glass of water or tea. Not only is each stylist incredibly skilled at what they do, but they're also very warm and welcoming. The first time I had my hair colored there I went with a bright red, and it's been my favorite shade ever since. I get a lot of compliments from random passerby telling me how much they love the color! (Quite a nice confidence boost!) Another cool thing about Raw is their complimentary blow outs. Just make sure you call ahead to see if they have an opening! Walk-ins are welcomed too if you're near the area. Megan is great. She's very nice to customers and pays attention to details. In my experience it was a bit overwhelming to see several hairstylists work together on the highlights of my hair but Megan definitely knew her work. I like the cut with lots of layers that she gave me. One thing I don't understand is the No-Tip policy. I'd love to give some to Megan since she was spending quite a few hours with me but they don't receive tips on credit card and if you give cash, it will go to a jar for the Aveda school. Jessica was amazing!! I live out of the country, but was in need of a good cut & conditioning treatment. I try to stay away from harsh, unnatural chemicals so I was pleasantly surprised to find this studio! It was my first time in an Aveda studio, but it won't be my last. Initially I was hesitant about the cost, but it was well worth it! I got a cut, botanical treatment, and a gloss treatment (WORTH IT). Jessica was calming, attentive, listened to my wants/needs, and was happy to suggest product which I inquired about, but never pushy. Really appreciated my experience with her today, and look forward to getting my hair done here with her again when I visit the states again next year. Note: it's a tip-free salon. I have been getting my hair cut from Ana for 3 years now. There is no denying her talent as she would give me some of the best haircuts I ever had. However, her unprofessionalism has completely convinced me to no longer give her my patronage. I booked an appointment with her a month ago for February 9th at 1:15 pm and she called me on February 8th at 9:15 am telling me she wasn't "feeling well" and needed to cancel my appointment. Keep in mind Ana has a 48 hour cancellation policy or else she charges clients for the services. Even worse, she said she wouldn't be able to reschedule me until June 2021, which was not an option for me since the last time I got my hair cut with her was in June 2020. It's disappointing to read recent reviews from people who have experienced the same lack of professionalism from Ana. I was the biggest fan of Ana and Raw, but now that she's let go of every one of her stylists and refuses to step up her professionalism, I see absolutely no point in returning. Thankfully, I reached out to another Aveda salon/stylist minutes after Anna canceled my appointment and they were able to fit me the very next day. read more

Best curly haircut I've ever had! I have (did have) very long, thick, naturally curly hair and moved to San Antonio a year ago. It had been around 3-4 years since I'd had a haircut or trim and it took me forever to research where I wanted to go get it cut. My hair was getting ridiculously unmanageable...tons of split ends and just an overall pain to wash, detangle and dry. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my hair! So after reading review after review on salons and stylists, I tried out Raw Salon and chose Anna as my stylist. First of all, the salon wasn't too far away from where I live. It was easy to find, right off 281 and St. Mary's. I was promptly greeted, asked if I wanted a beverage and a hand massage. Yes, please! Everyone was extremely friendly. I was impressed from the get-go. After my hand massage, I received a scalp massage. Wonderful. And after that it was time for my cut. Anna was very friendly and professional. She sat me in the chair and sat next to me and listened to everything I had to say about my hair...what products I use, what I wanted done to my hair, etc. I felt like she really listened. She dry cut my hair, which felt like it took forever, bless her heart, she didn't know she was going to get my big mane to work with! My hair felt 100 times lighter and healthier. Then, she washed it and explained every product she was using and then every product she used to style it. It was such a great experience. I can't wait to return in January for my next appointment. I 100% recommend this salon to any curly girls out there. Staff was friendly and professional. Anna really knew what she was doing and listened to me...I didn't really have anything useful to say and I let her take control because she's the professional, haha. I had my follow up session last week and it was amazing! I decided to go even shorter with my hair and Anna did a fantastic job! Again, she listened to me and we talked and I showed her pictures. Really these past 2 haircuts with her and the Raw Salon team have been my best ever. From being greeted, my scalp massage, my cut & wash...it was all in the details. I think I have found my forever hair home!! I live in Austin, and because of time restrictions, my roots had gone out of control!! I walked in, not expecting for them to be able to fit me in, and walked out with the softest, smoothest, most beautiful honey colored, multi-dimensional highlights that I've ever had in my entire life. Nay, Jen, and everyone there accommodated my schedule, fed me snacks, GAVE ME WINE, on top of the best head/scalp massage, AND hand massage.
