So, my moms kitchen light burned out in her kitchen the other day. When I say the light is older than I am, I'm not kidding. We spent like two days scouring the internet for a nice replacement and upgrade without wanting to spend 10 zillion dollars. I always drive by Ray's lighting when I'm on this side of town and it's not that far from where she lives. We wanted a specialty store for this sort of thing since we are tired of big box stores and being forced to hear "if you want to see more stuff, go look at our website" and "I don't work in lighting I work in plumbing, let me get someone for you." Walking in, the place isn't tremendously huge, but has a huge selection of product. Indoor lights, outdoor lights, big ones, small ones, chandilers, tiffany style, LED lighting, etc. We walked the store for a minute when a nice sales lady approached us and asked us if we needed help. We told her what we were looking for, and she showed us around a bit with what she had to offer. We also checked stuff out and discussed a few options while looking. Do we want domed? Glass? Fancy? Cheap? Gaudy? Hanging sconces? Wall mount? Dark colored or brushed nickel? We finally decided on a great ceiling light for the kitchen. The manufacturer was offering 15% off through the end of the month! Also, we asked about installation and were reffered to some electricians in the area. What I love about this place is the variety of lighting and price points as well. You can easily walk out of here for well under $400 for a really nice light fixture. If you want to get fancier, they have that as well. The variety in selection and price points is what make us want to come back for more. Plus, we didn't have to order anything. We worked with Mary to upgrade some existing fixtures in our home. Between different styles of switches/dimmers, light plates, fixtures and fans the number of options we had was pretty astounding and I was happy to have some guidance in making decisions to help turn our house into a home. Mary also worked with us to make sure that the fans we purchased had enough horsepower to move air through the rooms we were placing them in and even customized the height to make sure there were no sight line issues with our televisions. It was nice for someone who is not decoratively-inclined like myself to know that someone with a thorough knowledge of lighting was there to help in making good decisions in both the style and technical aspects of my purchase! read more

I went in looking for a hard to find bulb. First, the lady who 'greeted' me acted like I was interrupting her day. They didn't have the bulb I was looking for, which is ok. But as a person in the lighting industry and customer service I think you should try and offer a secondary solution or place to buy the bulb, the guy at HD did and I would too in most instances. Just a quick 'I don't have that one.' That's all o got. Maybe since you are a lighting specialty shop you should be able to order them for me? Crazy idea. My interaction there was super short but long enough for me to know that I won't be back, ever. read more

My husband and I went to look at lights and ceiling fans. They have a great selection. Amy helped us and showed us sale items that were a great buy. We purchased 2 ceiling fans and another light for our study. Amy was awesome and gave us great buys along with our military discount. simply can't say enough good about our sales-person, Susan. Not only did she help us choose the perfect piece for our living room (Quoizel floor lamp, style called: "Stephen"), she came out to our house personally to set it up for us....she then later returned, on her own personal time, to bring us a set of bulbs that she thought would look better than the standard-issue ones! I agree with the other reviewers that working with Susan was not the most pleasant transaction. She was indifferent, but not outright rude, to me. I came in to the store to see any Fandoliers that might be in stock and to order and buy one I had been looking at online. I wanted the help of a brick-and-mortar store in this transaction because I wanted the store to talk to the manufacturer and ask a couple of questions for me, before I bought. I knew that Ray's could probably give me this level of service, and I was right. This item is more chandelier than ceiling fan, but between the lights, up in the center, there is a fan tucked away. It is not a paddle fan as in most ceiling fans, but more like the fan in a box fan. I was looking at a Fandolier with eight lights. I was changing them from the compact fluorescent that came with the fixture to LEDs. I knew this meant I could not use the dimmer that came with the fan and I wanted to know if the manufacturer would tell me what model of wall dimmer to buy. (They wouldn't. And I voided my warranty by changing to LEDS!) I also wanted to know the real color of the glass around these lights, as it looked awfully dark in the photos. Also, the fixture itself looked brown-bronze online, yet another fixture in the store with the same color name, from the same line, looked almost gold. Which was it? Susan fully understood my electrical questions and easily grasped the color issues, as well. She was great in getting me the answers I needed and in calling me with my answers. Professional all the way! I ordered the fixture and received it as expected. I got it for the same price that it was being offered for online at the discount lighting places. Paying for the sales tax is only right. The stock guy loaded it in my car for me. I also decided that day to replace three hall lights. I got the inexpensive lights and dimmers that will work with LED bulbs, as well as new switches. Susan and a salesman went off and gathered all of these items for me. I thought it a bit odd that I was not asked what color I wanted, but I later learned that they only carried white. Well, the date the electricians came to install, I learned that I needed one or two more switches for something or other. So I ran to Ray Electric near me (the Troy store) and this time I needed an Ivory colored switch. Well, they only carried white. None of their stores had ivory. So I got back in my car and on my cell phone and I found an electrical supply store that did have what I needed, K/E Electric in Mt. Clemens. Once there, I saw the prices for what I had gotten at Ray. OMG. I paid $50 for my dimmers. They were $20 less at K/E. So watch the prices on the little things. I got a great price on the $900 light fixture and the $30 ceiling lights. It was the piddly little electrical parts that Ray Lighting really overcharged me on. read more

I normally do not write reviews but I just received my lights last week which are now all installed and i couldn't be happier with how great everything turned out. When I first came into the store I approached a sales lady Mary who claimed she was the manager and told me she was busy and blew me completely off. She was absolutely RUDE! Acted like I was a bother. I then met Marti who said she could answer my questions. My wife and I just went into Ray's Lighting. We're at the tail end of our kitchen remodel and knew what we wanted and were ready to buy. There was only one other customer in the store, and at least 4-5 workers. We were never approached. We are young (mid 20s) and after we were there for 15 minutes, an older couple (in their 40s) walked in and were greeted and helped immediately. We walked around the store for another 15 minutes, still without being approached once. I guess we look too young to be considered serious customers. We were ready to purchase a chandelier and two pendants. Thanks to this experience, I will take my business elsewhere. I wouldn't advise going to this location. read more

Rude!!! We walked in to buy lights for 4 rooms. Browsed the showroom for almost an hour, at no point did anyone even say hello to us, even when we tried to get their attention. People who came in after us were promptly helped, but we were totally invisible. Shelby Design Center is not far away and were MUCH nicer!! read more

We are so happy with Ray Lighting that I'm posting my first review online. Our salesperson, Susan, made what I thought would be an unpleasant task into a fun experience. She had us both laughing within minutes. Before I knew it, we had picked out three light fixtures that we both liked. The prices were much better than I expected--we got a discount for buying three at once and the quality of the delivered products lived up to our expectations. Susan, who explained she's a designer, helped us pick out lights that went with the other furnishings and lights we already have. Not only was she funny, she also was informative and helpful. I'd go back there with my wife without grumbling about it. read more

However when i arrived there was a new women and she DROVE US NUTS! my husband and i were in the store for 5 minutes and she had already asked us 15 different questions would not leave us alone to browes after i told her we were just looking around. i will NOT be returning nothing but a head ache! read more

Today was the 2nd time we did business with Ray Electric on Hall Rd. and both times they've been GREAT. This time we had Michelle helping us and she couldn't have been any more helpful. She even took a glass shade off of a ceiling fan light that wasn't connected and put it up against a lit lightbulb so we could see what the color of the shade would actually be when the ceiling fan light was on. Previously we dealt with Marti who is just as helpful. I could go on and on about Michelle and Marti, but I think I would run out of space! read more

The first salesperson who helped us was very helpful and friendly. Unfortunately, she had to leave us, and another sales lady took over. I found this new sales lady to be somewhat condescending and very pushy. I wound up ordering a light fixture from her anyway, because she did give us a better price; significantly lower than on the tag, and lower than the prices I've seen online for the same fixture. We were there very close to closing time, and did not experience feeling "rushed" as the other reviewer mentioned.In fact, we even stayed a little past closing time to make a decision, and were unaware of it until were leaving and they locked the door. However, we did not appreciate how we were treated by this sales person, and for this reason, we may not be making any more purchases at this store. read more

My wife and I went to their Sterling Heights location to purchase 2 new lights for our kitchen. We were working with Susan and at first she seemed a little put off like we were a bother to her. We ended up buying 3 lights for a substantial amount of money, all of which had to be ordered. the 2 kitchen lights came in and one was described in their ordering book as silver and was actually gold (not their fault). Then we were told the outdoor light was discontinued but she would sell us the floor model. I asked since it was a floor model with no box, instructions, warranty, been on everyday for who knows how long and possibly missing hardware, would she discount it? She said no! So their hours are terrible and I had to get off work early to be there before 6pm. She then tells me on the phone to hurry up because they close at 6pm and need to close promptly at that time due to the store alarm! While we were there the other salesperson told someone over the phone that she would be glad to wait past 6pm for them if they came in now. Apparently he was more important than us. So, while we were there returning the miscolored light she asked if we were interested in picking out another light and my wife told her we wont have time if we absolutley have to be out by 6pm (it was 5:50pm at that time). Susan advised us to go online and pick something out!!! She asked me if I still wanted the floor model for the outdoor light and I asked once again "are you discounting it at all"? She said to me "why would I, it has just been hanging there. Nothing is wrong with it." I told her it's been discontinued AND she wouldn't even attempt to find a box, paperwork or the parts bag for it! She then tells me "I'm just going to refund you your money, ok!" I said fine, got my money back and would never do business there again! RUDE, RUDE, RUDE! read more
