This is a really great and unique store, I have been going to them for over 20 years now and they never disappoint, they do an excellent job and very quick and are very precise. I see some of the reviews on here complaining about their labor charges, Welcome to 2023 , their labor charges are right in line with what you would expect any sort of service like this to charge. Some people start talking about Home Depot and Lowe's then I suggest you go there. This is a specialty shop with professionals working on lamps and helping you. Took them over 3 weeks to return my lamp for one arm repair and some replacement crystals. I was told I would get a call for crystal prices before they ordered the crystals and never got that call. They then gave me my lamp back with no bulbs in it stating that none of them worked when I brought it in even though they all worked when it left my house. Was also told when I let them know how I felt about their customer service that my lamp was, "a nightmare to work on." Never once did they apologize for not calling me back after I left 2 messages during business hours or for having my lamp from 6/17 to 7/10. Communication goes a long way, if it was going to take longer they could have called and let me know. Why they weren't answering the phone during business hours is beyond me. Dissapointing. Made me feel like since I don't look like I'm a rich I don't matter. read more

These guys do great work. I know that they are not "cheap" but it's up to the consumer to get an estimate first and if you can't afford it, don't leave your lamp. Running around town and itemizing the parts at a hardware store, is meaningless unless you are going to do the work yourself. People have to be paid for their labor as you are. I have had many lamps done here over the years and the results have always been exactly as we discussed. This is where the design community goes and that says a lot. They are reputable and will try to do what you want. Sometimes what you want is just impossible, but they will spend time researching that and you won't be charged for their efforts. Dishonest business. Scam artists. I'm a Detroit known musician, vintage collector, and a Nurse Assistant. I first came to them 3 years ago after work. I had to get my vintage lucite gravel swag lamp from my studio a new cord. Cost me $25. They were very friendly. I talked to the twin brothers for awhile about collectibles & things. We even talked about my recent surgery at Beaumont, and how it had changed for the worst for their employees, etc. We developed common ground because they had a similar experience with someone in their family that worked for Beaumont in the administration dept. So we knew mutual people. We talked for quite some time on that personal subject matter. Then 2 years later on August 18th 2018, I took my ceramic lava swag in to get a new socket & cord. It cost me $25. They remembered me from before. But today, 1 year later, still looking the same, they denied remembering me. And insisted that I had been dealing with someone else in the past. And that "parts went up in the last 2 years"...Really!? They tripled in cost that much!? Because when I picked up my swag ball lamp which needed the same thing - a new socket & cord. They charged me $36 for labor & $40 for parts a total of $80.23!! Trying to pull a fast one!? If you go to Lowe's, Home Depot, or Ace Hardware you can get the same parts for UNDER $20 and do it yourself in 20mins or less if you know how to. So, I was shocked & deeply offended. I will not be doing business with them anymore. And I will let the owners that I know of at vintage antique shops in Ferndale, Royal Oak, and Berkley know of this scam. I regret ever referring them to Michael's. Luckily, I had saved all of my invoices & credit card transactions to prove the outrageous difference in charges. Don't let them pull your chain! I have been going to Michael's lamp shop for years. We are very lucky to have this gem in our own backyard. When you walk through the door, you are quickly transported to an eclectic shop with a very vintage feel--think Soho or San Fran. Everyone who works there is knowledgeable. Sometime they can be a bit persnickety, but with their years of expertise, flair for style, and attention to detail, they have earned that right. Anything that pertains to lamps, you can find here, or it can be ordered. I have purchased lamps, lampshades, finials, harps, changed cords, sockets, switches and have had lamps repaired. Their turn around time for repair is quick. Michael's is not inexpensive, nor should it be. This is NOT Home Goods. Remember, you get what you pay for. This place doesn't even merit a single star. Their attitude and service is non-existent. The guy who took my lamp, promised a call within a few days. I waited a week-no call, so I called to get an update. The guy questioned why I expected a call, they keep people's items for weeks at a time without calling, etc... His snide attitude at my simple question was unjustified. I told him I was told someone would call in a couple days (as I had 4 more lamps to bring in) and he just kept cutting me off. He gave me a quote of anywhere from $50-70 to fix the lamp, and I simply asked why the range and his sniveling response clearly showed his irritation at being asked a very reasonable question. He then hung up on me. Well, for a spend of $350-400 you would think a business would provide a little better service ? I drove straight over to pick up my lamp. The guy was mid30-40's...no kid. Anyways, I told him it was his attitude-neither he nor the other guy in front of the shop could have cared less. This guy smirked and literally said " I don't care" and denied he had any attitude. Well, you have an " I don't care" shoddy attitude buddy. So, I can't trust you w my antique lamps, as I have to wonder if you have an "I don't care" attitude with your repair process too. I'd rather drive another half hour to find someone serious about helping people with their personal heirlooms. Frankly, not calling people, no follow up process, irritation at ordinary questions-not a good business practices. I don't know how you stay in business. read more

Worst place to go. Disorganized, not serious, and a mess of a shop. Took a lamp shade to be covered with a textile in May, just got it back first week of November after numerous calls, personal visits, and endless excuses from the owner Michael. Finally, I requested lamp shade and textile be returned even if unfinished. Not one apology or 'excuse us for the delay', and the job which took so long was done very sloppily, it must have taken less than 1/2 hour to finish. obnoxious owners, they shouldn't be in business read more

It started out by trying to get a lamp repaired, which they did for a good price - can't beat that - but took a good look around the shop and bought a few,, too! I worked with Dave who was incredibly hospitable and he helped me find the perfect lamp shade to match! Best part? Discovering they have the most UNIQUE and VINTAGE lamps around!!
