It's been too long since I made the hour long drive to Menchey's in Hanover. It was always worth…read moreit for the incredible amount of sheet music, including such genres as classical, broadway, soundtracks, and many more. I would spend HOURS going through every row of sheet music books. I found many unique treasures that you would not come across at other stores. Sadly, I discovered that they moved (about 4 years ago, I was told) to a small shopping center next door. I was disappointed that their selection has dwindled to not much more than the ubiquitous Music and Arts stores. Most of their selection is unsurprising. "Easy" editions also take up much of the space, so in the event that you find something interesting, it may be too easy. Gone are the grand pianos. Gone is the room filled with orchestra and band music. Don't get me wrong, it's fine for what it is. It's an OK music store that can probably meet the needs of most young students. More seasoned players may not find much of interest. I suppose that interest in sheet music has been in decline and/or it's easier to carry a larger selection on line. The staff was pleasant. The store was neat.

In order for our child to learn an instrument, we invested in a bell/ drum kit - almost $600. It is still sitting here unused, which is typical for some kids to experiment before they find the right instrument. Menchey's offered to buy it back at their MAXIMUM price of - get ready- 75 bucks!!! Mint condition. They would have gone onto resell or rent this instrument for about $500 to someone else!!! We will sell it to someone else, thank you. Greedy, overpriced, and uncaring!!! Well established, entrenched in every school system- they may look good on the outside- but at this point, this "Family Owned" business seems dysfunctional. If we could rewind the clock, we'd never patronize this corporation.

Al's Guitar Workshop - Nice set up Al!!

Al, is an amazing luthier, who is able to work wonders on all types of electric guitar, from an…read moreEpiphone Emperor I Joe Pass model (hollow body) to a solid body Agile Pendulum Elite 92527. The Ephiphone needed a complete overhaul of the electronics (pickups and controls) and a setup of the strings afterwards since a new piezo bridge was also installed. Prior to this work, the pots were quite noisy, and there were issues with the 1/4" output where it was also crackly depending upon movement. The pickups were replaced with a fairly standard set of Seymour Duncans (SH-2N and SH-4B), the wiring harness was removed and replaced with a much quieter (read shielded) setup, new pots and a new 1/4" output jack. The sound of this instrument while plugged in has drastically improved and now has a bit more versatility when it comes to live and studio usage. There was a little less work with the Agile solid body, where it needed to be updated with stacked pots in order to give a more Gibson-esque control layout of two volumes and two tone pots (one pair for each pickup) to replace the standard master volume, master tone. This allows the guitar to have more tonal variation, especially when both pickups are in use. In both cases the work was done promptly and with an expected series of charges. Al is probably one of the better luthiers when it comes to communications (including pictures) on what is going on with the respective job orders. Like the others on this board, I highly recommend your repair/setup work come his way.

Al not only quoted me a very reasonable price but made some very helpful recommendations that I wound up having him work on doing the complete upgrade and set up, all within my budget. Went to check out their guitar gear. I like to support local music shops and hadn't been to this…read moreone before today. Most of their guitar stock is focused on entry level models rather than high trim models. On the plus side they had a good selection of nice Orange amps and carried a line of affordable pedals, by outlaw effects, that I've never seen elsewhere. The two young store employees were nice and friendly. On the negative side, I was really turned off by the store owner and didnt want to do business with him as a result. He approached me while I was checking out a Jaguar guitar and I asked him a few questions about how the controls on the guitar worked (because they were really different) and what the B stock label meant and how that could affect resale down the road if I decided to sell it. His conversational tone and somewhat combative statements were really off putting. The guitar was a pretty good deal but I really didn't want to do business with a guy like him. Shopping for guitars should be a fun experience, but this was just an upsetting one. This visit made me appreciate Guitar Center a lot more because they treat customers (including kids) so well there and don't make you feel bad asking questions about guitars or taking your time checking out gear.
