I have been going to Winchester Optometry for 3 years, this year being my 4th and unfortunately my last year. The doctors and staff has always been nice. This year I was not happy with my glasses, they did not fit well and I just did not like them. Before even attempting to return them I typed into google (can you return prescription glasses) the answer was yes, most business will refund your money if you are not happy with your glasses. Winchester Optometry is not one of those business, they do not stand by their work. I asked for a refund but settled on new frames. When I went to pick out new frames the Optometrist was rude and spoke to me in a condescending matter. He lectured me treated me like a child then said, I would have to pay to change the frame's on the glasses. I ended up walking out and will never go back. to Winchester Optometry. read more

I have been going to Dr Baretto for years. Unfortunately, he has passed. I ended up going to another optometrist who was next door to where I worked. Since leaving that location, decided to go back and see Dr. Levine, who was Baretto's partner. He gave me the most thorough eye exam I had ever had. He explained the effect of my astigmatism on my vision and how that effects the my nearsightedness. I told him I had prescription glasses for reading and work but they only work at a very specific distance and make me feel nauseous when looking farther away. Dr. Levine is my favorite doctor ever! He prescribed my first pair of glasses for me when I was twelve years old. (More than half a lifetime ago!) A few years later, he fitted me with my first pair of contacts. More than just taking care of my eyes, Dr. Levine is a pleasure to visit. He greets me with an old-world kiss on the cheek. We talk about all sorts of things during the hour it takes to examine my eyes... travel, work, life, family. The rest of the staff in the office are wonderful as well. I went in for my first appointment today and am very happy with their service. I'm not sure if this was because this was my first visit and I have not been to an optometrist for years, but Dr. Mary Shui did a very thorough job checking everything. She explained each step of the process as we went along, and when there were several additional tests to be performed, she explained what they were for, whether they were necessary, and even called up my insurance provider on the spot to see how much I will have to pay so that I could make an informed decision. When the need for a follow-up appointment was discussed, she was very willing to work with my budget because I was paying out of pocket and she felt that taking care of the health of my eyes was far more important than charging their full fees. My only minor complaint--and it's minor enough not to warrant 1 less star--is that the assistant who did two of my tests seemed a little absentminded. When I did a periphery test, I had to tell her I didn't have my contacts on. Then later on when she wanted me to pick out a pair of glasses, I had to remind her again that I did not have my contacts on. But overall, I'm very pleased with my experience. With the exception of the assistant, I found the staff and doctor at Winchester Optometry to be careful, thorough, and professional. Would recommend. read more

Super happy with the team at Winchester Optometry! I learned more about my eyes than I ever have from Dr. Higson. Everyone, especially my doctor, were patient and very informative. Many medical professionals just flip the bozo bit with every patient that comes through and assume they won't understand anything they might say, so they never bother trying. But when Dr. Higson realized that my responses were informed by some knowledge of optics and physiology, she increased the information content to a much richer level than she might use with a less informed patient. This is a very rare trait and something that warrants an extra star beyond five! Besides all that, their prices were very competitive and I felt that the value was definitely there. I had insurance and I don't know how much they paid of the bill, but I ended up with a complete eye exam and new glasses for under $100. Because the medical system in this country is so distorted, it's rare that I go to the same provider multiple times, but I will definitely be back to Winchester Optometry in the future! read more

I really love the optometrist, Dr. Mary Ann Shui. She spent a long time with me during the exam, explaining exactly what she was doing and what was happening to my eyes. She is a gem and I trust her to take care of me. The office staff, however, isn't perfect by any means. When I went in for my eyeglass fitting, the receptionist directed me to sit at a chair against the wall. When I moved to get a magazine, she made me go back to the chair. OK, I guess they really want me in that chair. Then the assistant fitted my eyeglasses in the chair, and never offered me a mirror to see what they looked like. Call me vain if you will, but I spent more than $100 on these things, and I picked them out under the hazy fog of those crazy eye drops they give you during the exam. I should be allowed to sit in front a mirror and see what the darn things looked like! Never offered a mirror or even asked if I liked the way they looked. It's not the biggest crime, though. And I could have asked for a mirror. But if anyone from Winchester Optometry reads this, please in the future conduct your fittings in front of a mirror so the patient can see what's going on. Oh, and return phone messages too. I left a message on a Wednesday (when they're closed) asking to schedule an appointment for the eyeglass fitting. No return call. read more

DAMMIT JIM! I'm an Optometrist, not an Ophthalmologist! Well... I have been trying to be more healthy now that I am in my mid to late 30's and so on top of the regular doctor visits, I went to the eye doctor. OK, so I have not been to an eye doctor since, well, not to show my age or anything, but let's just say that the Thundercats cartoon was at the height of it's popularity. So here I am trying to choose a doctor when I finally decide, AW heck, I have this VSP plan and their website says this guy is practically across the street from me, so I will choose this one for convenience sake. I made my appointment and went in and I was "assigned" to Dr. Saul Levine. I felt like a high school freshman all over again for a second, but that feeling passed quickly enough. I filled out my paperwork and practically immediately, Dr. Levine called my name and my exam began. This was the BEST exam ever! Dr Saul Levine is a GREAT and pleasant man to speak with. He was nice enough to explain every test that he was giving to me so that I was aware of what he was looking for and it demystified the whole exam process. He has been doing this for years ( you should see his wall of awards and certifications) and he had by far the best customer service and warm presence that you enjoy being around. He was totally friendly and joked around and all in all a real pleasure to interact with and he was happy to answer any questions that I asked of him. The staff that handled my processing and eye glass frame selection before and after my exam were also phenomenal! Got an appointment with them last week to get some new glasses. It's been two years since my last one and I've been having trouble focusing my eyes because of long hours behind a screen. When I got there there were a few people sitting around but I was still able to go in within 10 minutes. (They took my info over the phone so I didn't have to fill much out, just one short form) The exam was pretty standard, the doc listened to what I said, tried a few things specific to the fact my eyes randomly get out of focus, and added something special to my lens (forgot what it was called). I'm not 100% sure it's made a huge difference since I just got my glasses now but the overall image is sharper so it definitely didn't hurt. Price was standard and service was great so would definitely recommend. read more

Oh helllllllll no!!! The doctor prescribed me some eye drops while i was pregnant and the label stated DO NOT take if pregnant or breastfeeding. My husband and I flipped out!!!!!!! They also tried charging me with a "medical exam" instead of an "eye exam".....EFF U!!!! We threatened to sue them for mal practice and they omitted our bill right away. read more

This is a review of my husband's experience. I found this office on yelp for him when he received an injury to is eye. Is is practically blind in one eye and the other has a severe stigmatism. They actually made two tentative appointments, because I was not so sure which one my husband could do, because he was on a plane when I scheduled. When my busy husband got there, he texted me, 'couldn't you find something closer to home'. I replied annoyed of course that he was questioning my efforts 'yes, but, I sent him there based on the Dr. Levine's good reviews'. So, the next text I get from my husband is 'this guy is very old and probably is not up on anything'. Then I was really annoyed, but kept my thought to myself, but wanted to say 'go find your own doctor next time'. After a few hours, I received another text that said, 'I have never had such a great eye exam, we have to get this solution, and he was so patient and blah, blah, blah' . I replied to my husband 'So do you want to find a doctor closer now'. He did not get my sarcasm or chose to ignore. Anyway, that was all meant to advise that my very picky, busy and with all my love semi snobbish husband loves this doctor and respects even is age actually thinks Dr. Levine knows a thing or two. Let's be honest, there are probably HUNDREDS of places to get eye exams, medical checkups for your eyes, get lenses, glasses, etc so the deciding factor for me at least is going to be something that is not listed as a charge but you gladly pay for... excellent service and while this office is not perfect (more on that later) Dr. Mary Ann C. Shui is the reason I will come back here. I went here previously and while I enjoyed the Optometrist (he has since moved on) there were several things that just irked me to no end. I loathed the lag in service. 1:00pm appointments would turn into an actual "1:30pm" appointments with no apologies. They display or tell you the office would open at a specific time and you schedule your day around that and they would sit in plain view eating lunch for an additional 15 - 20 minutes past the time-frame given while you stand outside. Or have three different people ask you the same thing over and over again and have each one of them tell the other person they just asked the same question. However, I had two emergencies that changed my view of the office. First, I had to get emergency contacts since there was a screw up with my contact order online. I was going out of town and asked to buy a box since I knew no one sales individual contacts. However, the woman I talked with saw I was a past patient and provided me with free lenses. NO ONE I called would do that I called so to have someone understand the entire dilemma and work around that to save $35 was excellent. Secondly, I had an infection in my eye so I called and was scheduled to come in the same day. Dr. Shui was courteous, professional, informative, and reminded me of what customer service USED TO BE LIKE. She patiently answered all my questions, showed me in detail what was wrong, and even cracked jokes to make me feel more at ease when I thought I caught the Ebola virus in my eye. =) I informed her that I lost my job and was tight on money and see if there was a cheaper alternative for the prescription she wrote and she took the time to research a cheaper alternative. She even gave me a sample of the expensive solution to get me going until I got paid and afford the cheaper one! THAT is going over and beyond what is required. In this economy everyone is worrying about themselves so to see someone think about others when it's not her concern was amazing. Is this place perfect, no. But when you find a Dr who gives excellent service you want to hold on to them like Donald Trump holds onto his patchwork hair. If the worst thing is waiting a few extra minutes or other trivial things then I will deal with it since its hard to find Dr's who care as much as what was shown me today. read more

This review is for a new patient appointment for a contact fitting, eye exam, and glasses. I specifically chose this place because it worked with my insurance and it had great reviews on yelp. The receptionist for the initial appointment conversation was very friendly. On the day of my appointment, I got there right on time and after finishing my paperwork, I was seen right away. The doctor was super friendly and knowledgeable and helpful. The office seems way more personal and relaxed than one of the mall eye shops. They have a good selection of glasses and I found a pair. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone (especially if you have VSP insurance). read more

i"ve been checking out yelp review for a while now but too lazy to actually write anything. This place is sooo good I'm so happy with their service I signed up so I can give them a good review and tell people about their fantastic service. They deserve 10 stars! The doctor I had was Dr. Chui, she's a clinical professor at UCB so you know she's good. I've been wearing glasses and contacts for years now and have had some medicore service. This places is NOT an assembly line. Everything go by appointment even the glasses fitting. She is so nice and knowledgeble, she would stop what she was doing and Listen to my questions and answer. My eye glasses exam took more than 1 hour! Now I understand this is not for everyone. some people just want to get it done fast but those are youe eyes. I appreciate how through they are, to understand your medical history and explain every step of the way. I've been doing the same test every year and now finally understand what they're for. After i got my glasses, they're a little uncomfortable so I went back. They did not get annoyed and Dr. chui went though the whole process again to check BOTH of my eyes to make sure: 1. the power prescribed is correct, 2. i did not need the astigma i had on my previous glasses. (she said she always do extra tests when it comes to take it off prescription, we did 3 tests.) 3. make sure my glasses are straight. turns out my old glases were crooked so when i put on the brand new ones my eyes had to readjust. I'm telling all my friends and co workers how wonderful this place is. It's not every day I found a place so good at what they do. Going back to get my contacts exam soon! If you have vsp like me, it doesn't really matter where you go because insurance pay for it so why not go here where they're not just about selling frames. If you have no insruance, judging from the price of the frame, it's pretty fair, even a little lower than other places. I'm also going back for my contacts exam and pay out of pocket, and the price for evaluation is good. These people are professionals. The only reason I give them one star is because the staff is nice, but other then that they seem like they dont know what there doing and they take very long on getting you what you need, I ordered contacts and they called me a week later saying they forgot to order them cuz they needed my credit card number which i asked if they needed before and they said no, so they ordered a week late then after they ordered they took a whole other week to tell me they came in and they were in for a long time before they told me :( the front desk lady julie or sumthin she is so clueless dont speak to her i dont know how she got that job. read more

I had my first appt today with Dr. Shui, as did my two sons-ages 4 & 7. I have no complaints from beginning to end! It was smooth and everyone was wonderful with us! From the start with the beautiful red head at the front ( I believe her name was Jennifer) to Dee and Jasmine and finally Dr. Shui herself. Especially when you have young children you expect things not to go perfectly....but they were great with the children, explaning everything as they went. This made my children calm and comfortable. And with me they were extremely thorough and patient. I will be going back to finish picking out glasses and I look forward to going in. They are a good group. I would recommend!! read more

Just got my new glasses and the vision is perfect, the price was LESS than Costco for the frame lenses. Best of all, they didn't push me for all the upgrades like anti-scratch, anti-glare, edge polishing and the like. They told me about them, but didn't twist my arm.
