No, I don't think so. The barber's electric clippers hadn't been sharpened for some time, producing a red rash on the back of my neck; if this is what is meant by "old school," count me out. Another poster commented that the barber asked him what he wanted, but didn't listen to his request; in my case, this was because the barber didn't speak much English. I wish the experience had been better--and had it it been just a bit better, I would have given them another chance. But as things stand now, I'm afraid I can't. read more

Place is a total shithole... most of the barbers are terrible and ray the owner is a drunk. One guy there looks like he hasn't shaved or got a haircut himself in over a year...you will see him...avoid him because he cant cut well either. They basically just cut your hair and ignore what you tell them you want for a cut. I told the guy I want my hair parted on the side and he started to shave a line in my head!!!! I'm white. I'm not black. why on earth would you do that!!?? I also told them I didnt want the face to be high and he totally ignored me and did it anyway when I brought it up his response was " look my job is to just cut your hair and make it look good! Dont complain about details".....what a prick. Never going here again. Rays Barber Shop has a great atmosphere that offers a true old school barber shop feel. The best part of the haircut might be the warm shaving cream used to clean up the edges. This morning I had my first experience at Ray's. I say my first, because: 1: I finally found a good, honest, reliable, and not to mention native English speaker close to where I live in Washington Heights. I have found that this can be quite hard to find in Northern Manhattan. I do not know of another. 2: The service was superb! Great customer service combined with someone that knows how to do what does. I know this not just because the family has been cutting for 50 years, since 1965 from my understanding. My barber happened to be Ray Jr. the newest generation cutting hair and well trained. But because throughout the day people kept congratulating me on my new hair cut. People can tell a good haircut when they see one. 3: The Price and Customer Service are also Perfect! He greets everyone as they come through his door and it all happens for only $15. So as long as I'm in New York City, I'll be coming back to Ray's Barber Shop on 207th Street whenever I need my hair cut. Thanks, Ray! read more

I got a shave here. It was excellent. I've been shaving for a long time, and tend to grow a pretty hefty beard. I've never been able to shave close enough (or get a shave at any barber shop, for that matter) such that I wouldn't have stubble the next day. Today, it's day two. No stubble. They don't joke around with giving you a great deal here in terms of cost, and it's clear that they treat their customers well and nicely, not so they can get a tip, but because they clearly love what they do and they're genuinely interest when they ask you things. Sure, one is never sure if the person cutting the hairs is going to be an absolute bore, or if they're going to be awkward when you're having a bad day - but I assure you, it's not at all like that at Ray's. I was having a bad day, and they were great. Dare I say, I felt cared about in this barber shop. I'll definitely be coming back here for monthly shaves, at least. read more

Probably the worst experience I've had at a barbershop. i was greeted by a guy at the entrance and told to go to the last chair. At that moment the barber looked like he didn't want to be there. Not one Hi or hey from him , just a sigh and what do I want. From the start You can see he didn't want to work and only wanted to finish.As I gave him instructions, he got on his phone, and continued on like nothing happened. Few minutes later he picked up his phone while Cutting my hair with one hand. At that point I just wanted it to end. he then finished off without showing me the back which I had to ask him. Then i asked if i can have some hair product to which he opened up the product for me to put it on...just a horrible haircut experience. I don't even know his name for me to not recommend. and Yes the haircut is horrible. with uneven hairs all over the place. I don't mind a bad haircut at times because it does takes skill and some are more talented than others, but if you don't even try and make the customer feel relaxed and like they're getting their moneys worth... read more

Got a great haircut today at Ray's barbershop. Unfortunately, I didn't ask the name of my barber. I just called them and asked if I could walk-in and they were really welcome. It was fast and EXACTLY as I wanted - I just showed my barber photos of my previous haircut (that I did abroad) and he nailed it! The only one thing why I rated 4 stars, but not 5 is that I also asked for hot towel shave and he did not perform it. I am not that hairy on my chin, but I really wanted to treat myself. Somehow he finished the haircut and announced the price for it and did not mention the hot towel shave. So I just decided to forget about it. It important to say that this shave skip was not done in rude way so it was OK for me. Will come back. read more

Ray's is a neighborhood institution. Ray is a third generation barber who takes his profession and customer satisfaction very seriously, but himself. His grandfather and father cut hair in this building and he carries on the family legacy with pride. I've been going to Ray's for about four years and it is consistently the best haircut I've ever gotten at a barbershop or a salon. I've paid $60 for haircuts that weren't even close to as good. Ray is kind, and he learns his customers' names. He cares about making you feel comfortable and he's incredibly accommodating. Ever since I started going to Ray's, anytime I've had to get a haircut somewhere else it's been a drag. I really can't recommend it enough. No matter where I live in Manhattan, Ray will always be my barber. (And because he's so good and cares so much, the other folks he hires to cut hair at his barbershop are also fantastic. I've only ever worked with Ray, but the fact that he treats each and every customer with flawless respect and honesty makes it clear that the minute you walk through those doors you're more than a customer to him. And to go with that, he's also as professional as they come, both in customer service and as a barber. Even after a nine-month hiatus due to covid, and I'm sure hundreds of customers, the guy remembers my name, the way I like my hair cut, and each of our previous interactions. He works quickly, efficiently, precisely, engages in exactly the right amount of conversation, and really clearly just knows what he's doing. In all honesty, going to him for a hair cut makes me wish I needed them more often. For as long as I live in this city I'm going to Ray's for a hair cut. These guys gave me a good cut at a great price! My only true gripe is that I would have preferred a cut from the owner... reason being he seemed to be the only barber to speak fluent English ( for specific requests with the hair cut like bang length and around the ears and such.) and at the end of my cut, the back of my neck was a little irritated by the man's buzzer. Since I moved uptown ten years ago, I have been searching for a great and convenient barber. I continued to go downtown to my old shop in Chelsea, I tried places in Hell's Kitchen, and the upper west side. By happenstance I found Ray's in Inwood and thought I would give him a try. I have finally found my local barber... I still have to travel a bit--from Washington Heights up to Inwood, but Ray's shop is worth it. His cuts are consistently great. His prices are reasonable, and most importantly, my wife is happy when I come home with a Ray's haircut. If you're looking for a great gentleman's cut go on up to Ray's! read more

Horrible customer service On Saturday May 4th, I stopped at Ray's barbershop, in Inwood for a haircut. I didn't have an appointment but was sure they would take walk-ins. I was greeted by one of the two barbers working and he asked if I had an appointment. I told him I didn't, he then asked me to have a seat. Both barbers were working with clients. After one of the barbers was finished , he was asked by the other barber, in Spanish, to go ahead and take me next since I didn't have an appointment. He shook his head no and told him his back hurt and he sat down. By this time the other barber was done with his client and told me he would take me and asked me to take a seat. As I'm about to sit in the chair, someone walks and claims to have an appointment with him at 3:30pm. It is now almost 4pm. The barber goes back and forth with the guy about being late and proceeds to tell me he can't take me. Now the other barber springs to life and says he'll take me. I guess his back was feeling better now. Needless to say I walked out. I have never been made to feel so uncomfortable and treated with such disregard of my time or the potential of becoming a new customer. It seems that at Ray's barbershop the only way to get a haircut or attention is to make an appointment or be besties with the staff. Lesson learned! read more

What a find this place is. I've been working in the area for over five years and never thought to look for a barber near work, I always have gone closer to home. The barbers are very nice, the customers always seem happy that they're there, and there's a whiteboard for walk-ins, good for if you want to get some errands done if there's a wait. When a barber fills all four chairs there is only ever a minimal wait. Couldn't recommend this barbershop enough, given how finicky getting a haircut can be. read more
