To start -- the older negative reviews are probably from the previous owners' time. For the last few years I had meals, both in the cafe and to go, numerous times. The food never disappoints. My partner, who is extremely particular, says their hamburger (with homemade bun!) is the best he has had. The chef, Mario, also bakes the pastries. It's a small unpretentious place, 6 or 7 tables and the family that runs it is extremely friendly, cheerful and accommodating. A real jewel! read more

BEST FRIES IN THE BRONX. No lie, get 'em a little golden. The small size was a lot larger than expected. If you're going with someone get a small order to share it'll probably be just right. Try their homemade hot sauce, it's terrific. Honest to god, the BEST BREAKFAST SANDWICH I think I've ever had. How can such a good BEC be so...light? The roll was delicious, toasted and flaky. It was so good I was telling everyone afterwards. If you only know BEC=greasy gut bomb, you should treat yourself to an exceptional one here. Knocking a star off for this festive update. I really can't figure this place out. I salivate as I pour over the menu but am always disappointed. Thankfully some, key word some, of the food is quality. Yesterday we needed impromptu rice, beans, and chicharrones de pollo for a get together. Instead of going to a cuchifritos in the South Bronx we figured we'd give Ray's a good 'ole second try. After all we love to support our local businesses. The primary reason for knocking a star off is for the girl who consistently has a nasty attitude and could really care less about what she does and how she treats the paying customers. If this is the first person you deal with at any establishment it really says a lot. This is not the South Bronx, it's City Island, a place with a wonderful ambiance and people that care about one another. She couldn't be more out of place and honestly we won't return because of her! Oh, and the food. The rice and beans were decent. The chicken was bone dry and an embarrassment at our get together. And... for $33?? I'm feeling like somebody got a Christmas bonus thanks to our ambivalence... Check your receipts against the menu prices at this place. read more

We were staying on City Island with family, and it was recommended we check out Ray's for breakfast one day, so we did. It's a small little place, but I imagine they don't get too busy being on City Island. Food is cheap and good, just what I like in a diner. There is kind of a weird ambiance (I think they serve Mexican food at night?), but the staff was very nice and friendly. We'll definitely be back next time we're in town! read more

I like the food but rarely order because its cash only which is very inconvenient. Cant figure out how places are still cash only in 2019.

This place has a warm and inviting atmosphere! The employees are very friendly and do all they can to ensure your comfort. I only had water, a small salad and coffee, but they still treated me like I was royalty. Next time I'm in the area, I will return! read more

Only reason I'm giving this place 2 stars is because the food is decent. Beside that the service in this place has gone absolutely down hill. Used to come here all the time but the last few visits have not been good. Ordered to go over the phone, arrived 25 minutes later and they forgot to start making the order, so now I had to wait and extra 25 min in the store. The cashier then over charged my order an extra 15$. When I asked her how much everything was she went on to say the computer made a mistake. When I got home the sides (guacamole and our cream) were missing even though it's supposed to come with the order and I reminded them to add It. Sad to see a place I used to love go down hill. It took 25 minutes to get food to table from order--and we were the only people in the cafe when we ordered. Apathetic waitress kept apologizing for the delay to us and to the other diners that eventually came in after us who simply ordered hamburgers with fries. Burnt nachos covered in AMERICAN CHEESE SLICES. Cold, greasy mofungo. Really awful experience. Avoid like the plague. Never again. You've been warned. read more

Living on the island we're pretty limited on places that deliver...I like Rays, they have good tacos,burritos and chicken fajitas. Sometimes they dont use enough seasoning but most of time its really good read more

This place is very nice and friendly. My husband picked up dinner from there for us to eat at home and everything delicious. We had the roasted chicken, pork and steak with fried plantains and flan for dessert. It all tasted homemade and wonderful. read more

If I could give 0 stars I would! First sign...dirty floor upon arrival. We seemed to be the first customers of the day. After that, I got to send back under cooked eggs. They took my plate and just heated the eggs up. Didn't cook fresh. When I asked why was I being charged for something I can't eat (feared getting sick) I was told ok, I understand. What does that mean? I had to ask for the owner/manager multiple times to be told he just left. What? They agreed to take $2 off. On a lighter note the waffle was good, but the ice cold butter was even better. (Insert sarcasm). read more

This place has great Spanish food and the tamales on Sunday is a nice treat! The quesadilla's are excellent, get either the chorizo or chicken or beef. The beans have a great taste served in a small bowl in gravy and the rice is fluffy, so you can mix it together. Glad this place is on the Island!! read more
