This is the only place that offers the electric scooters that allow you to ride in the areas that prohibit bicycles. Surrey bicycles are not legally allowed on the boardwalk, but bicycles are. Bicycles are not allowed on the sidewalks in Balboa alongside the beachfront areas and I was able go through that area which was a nice ride. The scooters rent for $35.00 an hour and can seat a driver and two rear passengers. They also rent out bicycles and stand up scooters too. They accept all major credit cards and the employees were very nice. I would recommend them. read more

Don't bother spending money here. The owner has zero pride in the rentals he provides and there's several other shops around as well with nicer bikes. They're literally rusted and in need of basic repairs. When we turned our bike in, they gave us back a photocopy of our credit card that we weren't informed they even took. Recently, we rented the Surrey bike for our family of 6. We had a great time. With that many people, the pedals are seriously needed. Some reviewers complained about the owner. Sure, he might be a little salty, but he was VERY helpful. He doesn't seem like the type of person to be sugary-sweet, he calls things like they are. Some people may be too soft and easily offended. My family wanted to rent one of their Surrey Bikes today. We have rented their regular bikes and their trailers for our little ones. And we also rented one of the Surrey Bikes 4yrs ago. It a small shop. They been there awhile. The last time we rented here, we were told that they contract with the hotel adjacent to them. Today all his Surrey bikes were out. And he said the other ones are broken and cant the parts. He offered to rent the fun scooters though! Bikes are high in demand during this pandemic. Stores have been wiped cleaned. This place is almost hidden! Look for the black gates of Balboa Inn and the entrance of the shop is to the right. Their windows and doors are blocked off with souvenirs and bikes. I almost missed the door because a huge surrey was right in front of it. The shop is across from BJ's (brick building). You'll find lots of bike rental shops at Newport. I came to this particular one because it was open on a Monday afternoon and stayed open until 7 pm. I called two places that were closed and two others closed early evening. They rent out beach cruisers (that brake when you pedal backwards) and family-size 4-6 surrey bikes. Not sure about pricing for the latter, but bike rentals are $10 for the first hour and free for the second hour. All-day rental is only $15, so you better bike for at least 3 hours to get your money's worth! They will take a copy of your credit card and driver's license; they said they would shred them after they get their bikes back. The designated rider signs a waiver, and then you're off with your rentals! *Note* They charge $1 for credit card purchases. The guy who helped me was very helpful, and I really appreciated it. He had a small map available to show me some bike route options. I feel like he went into more detail than an average salesperson would. I ended up biking north toward Huntington Beach because the weather was just really lovely. He gave me an LED light, which is going to be really important when it gets dark. There are nice bathrooms just behind the shop, which I found very handy. The women's is further past the men's. They probably belong to the Balboa Inn though.. We reserved two 4 person bikes. When we arrived there was only one 4 person and one two person. We made it work with our little ones. Upon getting to the bikes, they were extremely dirty and rusty. Every pedal rotation was met with a squeak and left us wondering if this thing was going to crumble beneath us. When I went back to Martin with my concerns, he showed no customer service and just said "sorry". I don't recommend this company. Went out on a double date with a few friends & after we decided why not get a cool electric bike rental! We walked up on the street & immediately I could tell this was going to be a bad experience... The wonder (because we verified with the hotel) told us at 3PM he was closing. I was like okay? Mind you I never make anything about race-- I'm not that kind of person. But that man was so cold! This business has the absolute worst customer service and business practices. My husband went in to reserve an electric bike 2 weeks in advance. He was charged in full when he made the reservation. Unfortunately the day he picked it up it was raining. Understandably they weren't able to rent him the electric bike due to the weather. However they did not want to refund the $500 my husband paid up front! (Yes dumb for him to do that) Reasoning was because he had to have someone go in to work that day. Finally the guy was somewhat reasonable and refunded $450 of the $500. He held on to $50 again because he had to pay someone to work that day. You know the usual thing you have to do when you own a business and don't want to be there yourself. It also took almost a month for him to refund our money. Be smart and use your credit card not your debit card so your money is protected. Or better yet use one of the 50 other bike rentals in this area. read more

My family wanted to ride bikes along the beach path but I am disabled and unable to ride bikes. A local business told me to go see Martin at Seaside Bike Rentals. I asked Martin if he had anything for me to ride to enjoy the day with my family. He took me right over to an electric scooter/wheelchair (I don't know the technical name for it). I called it a scoot and it goes everywhere a wheelchair can go. I am morbidly obese, but this scoot was extremely durable and took me everywhere I wanted to go. I was worried about it when it came time to go up a ramp, but it sailed right up it. This scoot took me all the way from Newport Beach to Huntington Beach and back. If the charge runs low you can exchange it for another one. For anyone with mobility problems or balance problems, this is the ideal thing! This is the only way I could spend this vacation day with my family. If I am ever in Newport again, Seaside Bike Rentals will be my first stop! read more

This review is long overdue. I chose to celebrate my May birthday by exploring Balboa Island with my family. I called Martin, the owner, and asked if I needed a reservation to rent the bikes. I chose Seaside Bicycle Company because of their AMAZING Yelp reviews and their AMAZING prices. We had yet to find out that the most AMAZING part of our experience was Martin. We needed 5 bikes. It was a beautiful day and we were leaving Seal Beach in a bit to make the 25 minute drive to paradise. Martin explained that the parking fills up quickly. He even went out on his cell and checked parking availability. A+++ I blurted out that it was my birthday and I am impressed, greatly impressed, that he checked the parking for me. I thanked him and he said he would take care of us. About 40 minutes later, Martin called me back on my cell phone. (Clever) He asked where we were as parking was filling up quick. (Super Wowie Kazowee). We got a late start and wouldn't be there for another 30 (traffic was H- E- double hockey sticks). Again, no worries. Instead of parking directly into the lot, he told us to pull up along side the store and he would 'hook us up' with a close parking space for FREE. My family & I were so impressed. When we got there, Martin did indeed hook us up with PRIMO parking. We got the bikes and my son & his girlfriend want to trade the two singles for a tandem. I knew there was an additional cost, and that was totally OK with me. Martin said "Happy Birthday" and didn't charge us. He then told us to pull the bikes around so he could take some family Birthday photos. I love those photos! We had an amazing ride all around Balboa Island. So fun! We shopped, ate, drank, and traveled down most every street admiring the Dutch Doors & the beautiful homes. We then returned to the bike bath in Newport Beach. It was late afternoon and I just felt so carefree and happy. Words just can't express my joy. We returned the bikes. Martin wasn't there to say goodbye. I wrote him a Thank you letter right there on the spot. It was lengthy ... a page ..but I just wanted him to know what an impact he had on our bike riding birthday experience. I enclosed a $20 tip because..... this was an extraordinary experience. My entire family will be loyal to Seaside Bicycle Company. My mom asked him where the "kiddie land" was, and he just snapped back "I have no idea what you are talking about". Upon arrival we were greeted and advised to follow the gentleman in. You are surrounded by old bikes with a narrow walking space to go sign the rental contract. You have 3 options, I chose a 2 hr rental which was $11. Not bad, but other places have a full day rental for $15. After my card is charged I'm told my bike will be brought to the front. I was given a black rusted bike... the kick stand was rusted and broken. For the price, I suggest you find a place with a better rate and better bikes. This place has it going on!!!!!! Not only do they provide you with great bikes, but they'll also give you some tips as to where you get your grub on. You can actually rent your bikes out after hours if you'd like the option of riding along the beach at night. They can give you a basket to attach to your bicycle and some lights as a safety measure at night. This makes for a great cheap date. Surreys are hazardous! The customer service is horrendous! I would have given them a negative five stars for all around poor service. I should have yelped this place before renting. By the reviews with less than two stars, it clearly sums up the experience. I would encourage you to read the rest of the reviews to give you a sense of what to expect. Such a mediocrcy of a business. As for our experience, let me tell you, it was a first class shit show! First, when we approached the young guy outside of the store he ignored us. Then, while on his cell phone, not making eye contact, and with a bothered attitude he says, "how can I help you". We decided to ignored his poor customer service and bad attitude which was a big-big mistake on our part. We proceeded to rent a two bench surrey. This thing was so busted it made the loudest squeaking noise as we peddled because of all the rust. In addition, it was very difficult to peddle. (Keep in mind we are active people, so absolutely NOT out of shape) As we peddled I had noticed one of the tires wobbling like a broken wheel, and all of the tires looked cracked. 15 minutes in, we noticed the front tire was completely deflayed, and one of the back tires was low on air. We called the place, and instead of taking our word for it they kept questioning the integrity of the flat tire. The young guy finally came out to inspect the surrey. It would have been a good idea to have brought a replacement surrey instead of, once again, questioning if the tire was flat He then called, what seemed to be the owner, and by the sound of it he wanted us to peddle it back to the shop. The young guy kept insiting it would be a bad idea because it would ruin the rim. For that reason they didn't make us peddle a broken down surrey. The guy went back to pickup another surrey. We waited 25 min before we saw him and the owner with the replacement bike. The owner was towing the bike on a large electrical three wheel scooter while the young guy peddled, so I know it shouldn't have taken 25 minutes. For the inconvenience, I nicely asked the owner if he could provide a discount. He would not take ownership of a flat tire. Instead he said, it wasn't his fault that we got a flat tire, and normally other bike shops would make us peddle a defective bike back to the shop because they dont have a towing scooter. Implicating that he went out of his way to bring us a replacement. My friend then replied with... what does bring a replacement surrey with an electrical towing scooter have anything to do with a flat tire and wasted time. He got a bit agitated and repeated that he can't help a flat tire. I then said, part of owning bikes for rent is to make sure to do the maintenance in order to avoid these mishaps. He had the nerve to say it was a new tire, when clearly all four tires were cracked along the sides. Let me add, that one of the springs that helps to steer the bike was broken off. Our surrey ride could have ended much worse if the other spring had broken off. (Wish I had taken a picture of the broken spring and cracked tires) We peddled the replacement bike back, for 15 min. Keep in mind we stood around for 25 mins, we only rode a total of 30 mins of the 1 hour that we paid for; to experience a bad attitude, busted surrey, no discount, and waisted time. What a nightmare!!! This is an inferior business., and very surprised they're still in business. WHATEVER YOU DO...DO NOT SUPPORT THIS BUSINESS! read more

We rented 2 electric 3 person scooters one day @ $126.00 each and we were happy with the lenght of time we got outta of them. Rented them for 4 hrs each and they made our day. Started dying out after 3 hours and barely made it back to return them. We rented another scooter a couple days later in the afternoon for another 4 hr trip. No returning discount offered, but still rented a 3rd scooter for same price. This was a whole different story and lack of professionalism by the owner. This 3rd scooter started running low on charge 1hr 30 mins after renting. About 3 hrs into our trip at 545pm trying to head back from newport beach peir the scooter died on the boardwalk and we couldn't push it. I called the business card and the owner was quite upset we were bothering him and told me to call the shop. I didn't have the shops phone number on hand. Had to sit off the side of boardwalk looking up who to call since the only number I had was the business card in it's cupholder. After looking back on our prior rental I had to call the manager on his cell at the shop. The manager at the shop was helpful but his owner was quite rude and honestly didn't care about our situation. Now running late for other dinner plans with family and friends we couldn't wait around for roadside assistance. I told the shop manager we will have to refuse some or all the charges on my C/C due to major inconvenience. I told mgr were it was and we'd have to leave it. The next day I received a demanding voice message from the owner. No I'm sorry? How could we have made this better, or let's work something out? NO just saying how I was in the wrong to leave it on the side of boardwalk and that if I were to refuse the charges he would just report it stolen and he has me under contract. I never loose charges like this since I have have a signed contract. NO ONE STOLE IT! I can tell you... your shop towed it back. The renters outside the house were the scooter died felt bad for us and even said they would look over it till someone picked it up.. We stopped after dinner and knocked on the door at house where we left it out front of. The renter said someone showed up 15 mins or so after we left it and your guy took it away. This was now @ 925pm when we stopped by. WOW! So that's how you conduct business? Just simple enough to know I would never rent anything ever again from your business. The bikes at this rental place are old and crappy. My bike chain fell off twice and when I called to ask what I should do the owner told me that they would be able to send a truck later in the day to grab the bike. Hours later I was called back and told to go to a bike shop around me (as I was 2 miles away from this bike shop) and get the chain fixed. I lost a day on my bike. When I finally was able to get the bike fixed and ride it back to the shop they did indicate I could get a new bike however for me that didn't help as my day was well half over. I asked for half a refund of which I was spoken to in a rude manner and told "no! And that's not how he runs a business" I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS SHOP simply because of the owners extremely rude customer service. read more

Wow! After reading these reviews about Martin, the owner, I think I must have gotten him today on a really bad day! For my daughter's birthday, I took her and two of her friends ages 8 & 9 down to Balboa for a ride on a surrey bike. That was what she really wanted to do for her birthday. We went in and rented the surrey bike from another worker, Martin wasn't there at the time. We paid $35 for an hour. He gave us directions about where to go and took a picture for us. Everything started out great! I took the driver's side, not trusting the girls to steer for us. We got all the way down to the Newport Pier and then on the way back, I noticed that the pedal on the driver side was coming loose. I kept stopping to wiggle it back on but wasn't able to keep it on. The girls were so concerned about getting the bike back on time that they pedaled their little hearts out while I could only steer. We were almost to the shop and we felt something hit the ground & ran over it. We looked behind us & saw that it was the pedal. We parked the bike & walked into the shop, pedal in hand. The worker called Martin who came by right away and took us to the bike. I expected an apology or some kind of compensation for our trouble. But Martin started accusing me of running into something and breaking the pedal! I was very careful and never ran the bike into anyone one or anything. He said that the mechanic just put the pedal on this morning, it was a $45 pedal, they don't just come off like that, "this is not my first rodeo", etc.. I assured him that I did not run into anything, it just starting coming loose as we rode. He wanted me to come and talk to his mechanic! He was so incredibly rude and condescending. I told him that I am here with my daughter for her birthday and I don't have time to go talk to his mechanic. Why would I do that anyway? These 3 little girls are standing there having to listen to all this! He finally said in anger, "It's your daughter's birthday? Ok then, here's $20" I went back to the shop to get the copy of my driver's license. As we were walking out, Martin drove by on the bike pedaling on the right side and reaching over to use the steering wheel on the left. He yells to me, "Is this so hard to do?!" I yelled back, "Yes! If you have three 9-year olds on the bike with you!" Yikes! I wish I would have met the Martin that the other Yelpers did! I was going to recommend that no one support this shop. But seeing that everyone else had such a good experience with Martin, I would like to chalk it up to catching him on a bad day. However, I don't think that I will ever come back again. read more

I can't even express what a great experience I had with this establishment. On a whim, I decided to take my Mom to the Balboa pier. We started walking down the pier, but at 85, she quickly tired. I noticed people riding the surreys and asked Mom if she would like that, so I found a gazebo for her to sit in and went in search of the venue that rented these. I ended up at Seaside Bicycle Co. After casually chatting with Martin, the owner, about wanting to take my Mom around the grounds, he suggested this electric scooter for two. A Pedego Electric bike, I think? I was excited that the price was right, so I got it. As I drove up to my Mom, the look on her face was priceless. Martin was right. It was perfect for us. It was easy to drive, my mother had a blast and I didn't have to peddle a bike. I was able to take Mom to the end of the pier and all around the area. When we were finished, I dropped my Mom at the car to return the scooter and Martin kindly gave me a ride back to the car on the scooter. He was just wonderful and even gave me the suggestion to call and reserve the scooter next time to ensure availability and no wait time. This was an unexpected, fantastic experience!
