I stupidly broke the tip off of my Shun chef knife. I texted Evan (at 8pm!) and he quickly replied with a very reasonable quote. I have been looking at both hewing spears versions at Museum Replicas. When the wide variant came up on Deal of the Day, I pulled the trigger on two of them. Even if never used in real life, I like for all my weapons to be battle ready, rather than just accurate 'facsimiles'. To bring them up to their full battle potential, I shipped them to Razor Edge Sharpening in Laguna Niguel, CA (https://www.razoredgesharpening.com/). Although these spearheads come with very good points, they have extremely dull edges, which also get quite thick as you move toward the socket. I sent inquiries to half a dozen Internet sharpening services. However, only Razor Edge was willing to accept the challenge of working with the extremely dull and heavily curved blade profiles. They started work as soon as the blades were received, texting me several photos and videos of their progress. When the blades were returned, they were literally razor sharp and easily shredded a sheet of paper into thin strips. I found the quality of the steel and the workmanship of the spearheads to be first rate. Initially, I was concerned no sharpening service was offered. Nevertheless, it worked out in my favor to have a professional sharpener put a top quality edge on my spearheads rather than settle for potentially mediocre production edges. In fact, the whole experience has raised my personal awareness of what 'really sharp' really is. Since these spearheads are now formidable weapons, I am considering turning them into showpieces with custom engraving and tooled leather sheaths. However, my next priority is mounting the heads on stout ash poles and balancing them with heavy Greek spear butt caps. read more
