Board Rentals I had 3 days in San Diego and all I wanted to do is surf. I had no idea how irritating it would be, I checked every surf shop on yelp in north county. 70% only rented soft boards, 10% could only offer a "demo program" with a deposit equivalent to the retail value of the board, and the 20% that had fiberglass, epoxy, or any other hardboard were $50+ for day rentals and $15+ on wet suits. Real surf shop Good selection - Good fiberglass boards with good range in size Great rates - $30 day rentals and $5 wet suit rentals. - only $10 more for additional day - $80 deposit (go ahead, call around, that's cheap) Excellent customer service - The owner is in the shop everyday and makes sure you walk away happy. At first, every shop felt like I was mall hopping and dealing with staff reading off a script, boards having to be returned on a 24 hour on the dot system. Here I felt like i had my own little surf shop, homey owned, that I can just go grab a board and catch some waves, simple and plain. Real Surf is the much needed middle finger in the face of everything that is wrong with surfing.It is sad that the mom and pop surf shops have given way to corporate mega stores & shaping machines.Its a good thing that Ambrose goes more for quality than quantity cause it shows in the boards that come out of here.Remember when you could talk to your shaper ?Take his helpful suggestions and get a board that really works well?You still can in Oceanside thanks to these guys,and I haven't put anything else under my feet since. This is my go to surf shop in Oceanside. The store is family owned and run, which is really nice in the modern day and age of big box stores. They shape some beautiful boards out of the backroom and and one of these days I'm going to get myself one! read more

DONT GO HERE!!! I can't believe this place got any good reviews. It is a cute store, but it's a serious scam. They draw you in with cheap rental rates and then say that any problem in your fUlt and charge you the security deposit. I truly believe this guy steals and scams pepper to keep his cute little shop afloat. He swears at customers on the phone and hangs up on them. ZERO customer service or regard for e customer. His rentals are super old and crappy too. PLEASE BEWARE,,, DONT GO HERE. He charged me for a crappy two ear old wet suit with holes more than you can buy them new for. The store one mile south toward Carlsbad was much, much , much better and safer!!!! Don't take the risk!!! read more

Do not do business with Sean the owner! My husband brought in some surfboards and Sean agreed to take them on consignment. An employee had told me that both boards sold when I had called to check on the status. I have been dealing with this man for over a year trying to work out some sort of payment plan. Whenever I call I get the runaround from him. He always tells me he is switching banks or he did mail a check ,but it must have got lost in the mail. I understand times are tuff,and have told Sean to just send me a small payment once a month. I have an autistic child at home and do not have time to call Sean anymore,and beg for the money he owes. We are going to take him to small claims court after the holidays. Sean is a shady person!!! read more

Been coming here since 2005, have always felt welcome. Currently own 2 house boards, one of them a custom 'quadzilla' which is a dream board. The last REAL surf shop in oside. Sean Ambrose is a innovative shaper who has some seriously sick shapes. He's always up to talk about the different shapes and characteristics of the boards in there. Whether it's one he shaped or a used board for sale he's looking out for the individual surfer and what's best for them. It's not bogged down with tons of apparell. It's full of boards. All sorts of cool retro stuff and yes the "Spuinik" parabolic stringers, epoxy, huge double concave's, bat tail, quad. The best board I've ever surfed overall. Being new to Oceanside I came into this shop with tons of questions about surfing and what equipment I need to get started. The owner was extremely patient with me and answered all my questions. He gave me his undivided attention which is hard to find in a lot of surf shops in the area. His workmanship looked great and I would strongly suggest anyone to visit his shop when in Oceanside. This place is a joke!! When I first went in a couple of years ago, I was made a really good deal on a board. Then the board broke snapped 18 inches of the nose off. No biggie s*** happens. Next I took my brand new Nirvana fish style board, and traded it flat out for a Takiama that needed a bit of work. He was going to sell me the board for 50 bucks. I said I will give you my brand new board, just because I don't like it, I will trade you flat out if you fix it. He agreed and told me 2 weeks. It has been 3 months, & I keep getting all the same excuses. I consider myself a pretty laid back and easygoing guy, but find myself extremely agitated and getting hot tempered when it comes to all the excuses I get. I have fixed all my own boards throughout the years, did not matter how extreme the damage. It still did not take me more than maybe one week to fix anything I have ever had to do on any board. I am NOT a professional shaper and do not profess to be one, I know some jobs can be difficult but you are not building the 16th chapel, you are fixing a surfboard. Today I go in and get my board no matter what. read more

my name is joey i went to real surf with my surfboard that needed repair and had a great experience and when i got there the owner was already busy on a project (he was shaping a board) and win i walked in and showed him that i needed a repair he not only stopped his other project that he was working on he also repaired my board in about 15minuets for about 5 times less then i was expecting the cost to be. he did an amazing job on the repair and he was very nice and i recommend this shop to EVERYONE!!! the customer service was amazing and i could not believe their prices. read more

I wish I could give zero stars for this place. I ordered a surfboard case online. I never received this order and left out of the country for my trip anyhow. When I got back a month and a half after my order, I called Shawn and he said he would check into it, he said he would call me on Monday, ( this was a Thursday). Monday or Tuesday he never called me. Wednesday I call again and the clerk said he would have Shawn call me. He never did. Thursday I call again and the clerk said he forgot to tell Shawn to call me. The clerk said he would have Shawn call me when he got back to the store today (Thursday). I then called the bank for the $245 and I had to file a claim and dispute the charge with my bank. The bank called him to speak with Shawn, to acknowledge the claim and the clerk said he was out of town and wouldn't be back till Monday. Whatever. Here is a piece of advise For costumers: try to have them refund the merchandise or the money. If no response The bank will get it back for you anyway like they did for me. read more
