I got there shortly after they opened and there was no other customers in the store so I had no wait time. They do have a sign which is posted with all that's available that day. That was super helpful as a first timer. The store itself is super cute with an open kitchen so you can see them preparing to bake . It made me smile to see they use kitchen aid stand mixers because I have one as well. I came here about a week ago on my way to campus as an end of semester treat and my goodness was it an epic treat! This cinnamon roll was an absolute delight! It was soft, sweet, and had excellent filling and frosting! I visited The Futile Bakery for the first time yesterday and I had such a wonderful experience. At 7:00 am, I was greeted with a smile & a friendly welcome. Since I was a first timer, I needed some time to browse the menu and they allowed me to do so and told me to let them know if I had any questions. I've seen the cinnamon rolls on my IG feed and they looked amazing so that was my first choice. I also got a red velvet cookie. The young man was so kind and gave me the cookie free of charge & also tossed in a sample of a strawberry scone. I had only eaten a scone once before and I really wasn't very impressed. This one changed my opinion of scones. It was not overly dry, it had great flavor and the icing was simply divine. The Futile Bakery is about a block away from my office. This place continues to go downhill for me. I'm not woo'd like my first visit and leave thinking "eh." The employees never give me the warm and fuzzies and I don't feel like my business matters. The young girl who used to be there every time I came I haven't seen in a long while. I've mostly seen the same 2 staff members as of late. Their weekly menus posted on Facebook never match what I see in the bakery. I get items sell out, but when I look online I always pick a couple things I would like to get and then go to the bakery to get them. When I arrive usually the items I pick are usually not even on the menu for that week physically in store. They do write next to their menu what has sold out so I can see what was available. Sometimes I have arrived and not really wanted anything, but I have always picked some thing. The short breads are good, but I find that the majority of it is breading. I wish there was less crumble and a little more of the fruit compote. * the blueberry lavender (second shortbread I got) was significantly better as the employee gave me the slice with the least amount of topping and the lavender was a nice refreshing touch. The peanut butter brownie was my last choice from here. The brownies are good, but I find underwhelming. The peanut butter bites they put in them, however, were divine. They tasted like little buckeyes before they get dipped in chocolate. After learning that the owner doesn't even bake at the bakery and having underwhelming experiences with desserts and the staffs treatment and I just don't find myself drawn here anymore. Everyone has been raving about the cinnamon rolls at this place so I'm excited to finally try them! They are pretty delicious and I was lucky to get them fresh out of the oven. I did have to wait 20 minutes but I felt that it would be worth it and it was. My personal opinion is that I would love to have more white icing (I just love icing on cinnamon rolls). But the positive thing about not having too much icing is that you can really taste the cinnamon flavor and the true taste of the cinnamon roll itself. I had a coupon for a free cinnamon roll so decided to try this place on a Saturday morning. It was around 9:30 AM and there was a line 10 people deep. It's a very small place with no seating inside. There were three people working however they were out of several things. I ordered two cinnamon rolls and tried to get a green tea but they gave me a blue jasmine tea instead. It was odd drinking a Smurf blue colored tea but they added cream and sugar so it tasted ok. I took the cinnamon rolls to my parents and they absolutely loved them! So two suggestions for this place. I have no idea why they named it futile... Do they know what that word means? I hope this place lasts because they do make very good fresh pastries including scones And cookie sandwiches. Maybe change the name from Futile to something more positive? Also, they have a sign in front of the cashier that reads Please advise if you would like to add a tip. Good enough. There's also a large jar full of cash next to it. So then why the need for the cashier to announce to each person "Do you want to add a tip?". Maybe it's just me but I think that's over the top for a bakery. Of course everyone in line feels obligated so they are collecting 20% on each order. Futile has quickly become the go to cinnamon roll destination in Lexington. I can attest they were probably the best cinnamon rolls I've had in town. Pillowy soft and just the right amount of cinnamon and icing. I also tried their Apple and pumpkin which are good but just a notch below regular cinnamon. Holy grail of cinnamon rolls! This was my first time here, and my experience definitely did not disappointment. I called ahead of time to see if there were still cinnamon rolls available, since a lot of the reviews on here say that they sell out pretty quick. I was able to snag four cinnamon rolls, two coconut cream scones and was given a s'mores cookie on the house. Everything is absolutely delicious. The cinnamon rolls are gooey and have the perfect amount of sweetness that compliments a cup of coffee on the side. The scones are packed with flavor and the texture is on point. And the s'mores cookie brought me back to my childhood Girl Scouts camping trips where we made s'mores around the campfire - so, freaking, good! Definitely 11/10 would recommend. TLDR: Tasty, unique baked goods. On the weekends, expect them to be sold out of what you want and a long wait. Save the hassle, go to Magee's, North Lime, or Spaulding's. I've been to The Futile Bakery a few times now, but I unfortunately don't think I'll be going back. The cinnamon rolls are pretty good (when they're not sold out). They make really unique baked goods and specialty rolls (e.g. peanut butter and chocolate rolls) that sound and look amazing, but if you're not there within the first 15 minutes after they open on the weekends, don't expect to get one. They're open Wed-Sun, but I've only been able to go on the weekends and there's always a line. It's open 8-12 on Saturdays and Sundays. In the past, I've arrived at 9:45 and they've been sold out of all cinnamon rolls with only a handful of cookies remaining. This most recent visit, I was 10th in line after arriving at 8:30. I waited outside from 8:30-9 because they only allow 2 people inside the store at once. First come, first served for all of their items. When I finally got in at 9, they were sold out of almost their entire menu, including the peanut butter chocolate rolls. I asked why they always sell out so quickly and don't make enough supply to meet the demand. The employee was very friendly and said they're closed Mondays and Tuesdays, so they don't like to make too much and create waste. I understand that business model, but maybe they should project to have more business on the weekends so they don't sell out of pretty much everything within 1 hour of opening. Heaven forbid they make a few too many scones, rolls, or cookies and have to donate them to a local shelter. I hope they make some changes because I really want to like this bakery, but it's always a very frustrating experience. read more

Prior to the store opening, Daniel (the owner/baker) had made our anniversary cake and our daughters birthday cake (while baking from his home). Both were beautiful and delicious. I have been to the storefront three times now and enjoyed apple cinnamon rolls, a muffin, a cookie, and a macaron that I'm sure was good, but my 5 year-old was quick to claim it all for herself. Opening a bakery during a pandemic sounds immensely overwhelming and there are days that they sell out quickly or that it takes a little extra time to get your order, but this is a local business that produces a fantastic product created by a delightful owner.
