The owner is friendly and one can see how much he cares about his craft in the way he describes each item, offers to taste, and the presentation of the store. On our way from Chicago to South Carolina and Florida we stopped in Lexington and I had to try this highly-rated bakery. I stumbled into Al-Taj while looking for artesian bread and twisted my husband's arm to make a stop before our resting destination in town. My husband patiently waited in the car as I talked with the owner and selected various goodies. The owner was very polite and helpful, we had a delightful conversation and generously offered me two cups of Arabic coffee, one for my husband. The coffee was delicious, bold, and strong. The menu is extensive and they will prepare food when ordering. I was in a bit of a rush, trying to be considerate of my husband, so I selected items that were already prepared. So far the few treats that I had this evening were delectable - baklava, Fresh Baklava with cream ( وربات بالقشطة ), and various types of Turkish Delight (pistachio and caramel). I'm looking forward to tasting the rest tomorrow - Fresh dates cookies, Ghee cookies, Oreo Turkish Delight, and some savory items Fresh spinach pie with feta cheese and spinach pie with pomegranate molasses. One of those smaller strip mall places on the edge of town, but this place was as good as I could have hoped for in a part of the country where this sort of thing (an Arabic bakery) is not exactly easy to find. They had both savory and sweet options, and the owner turned down the music a bit to explain them to me. Faced with a choice of getting a spinach pie with feta or one with pomegranate molasses, I couldn't choose and got both. Their large sweet selection allows one to pick from many flavors and you get a slice to your liking and pay by weight. They offered matcha pistachio, and it was an intriguingly subtle flavor with a delightful spice dusting on the outside. I was intrigued by some other options as they had za'atar pies and cupcakes as well, but that was enough food for one outing. They definitely have the best baklava around. Just the right amount of sweetness, flakiness, rose water, etc in their product. I have had some really good and really bad baklava. Their pistachio baklava is one of the best I have had. I also ordered a Zatar pie that was delicious! The gentleman that owns this place really cares about his product and I hope that he will continue. I do wish this was a cafe so that you could sit at a small round table and take your time but it's not really set up for that lingering enjoyment. Not only does Al-Taj sell at least 20 flavors each day including my new favorite of Ferraro Rocher but he also sells a variety of savory items including meat pies, cheese pies, spinach pie and my all time best zaatar pie. His food is reasonably priced and truly delicious. The only savory item I have yet to try is his kibbeh but if all other foods are even a sample preview, I know I'm in for a treat. read more

We ordered multiple pies and good selection of sweets. Everything tasted awesome, meat pie, spinach pie , kibbe , za'atar pie. everything was absolutely wonderful. The desserts were very impressive as well, pistachio baklava, petit four, cookies, and harrisa. The owner was extremely friendly, gracious and welcoming; I just wish I brought back more with me. The first time I came here was Saturday and I'm back on Tuesday. Rami, the owner is a true gentleman host. He treated my daughter, her friend and I so graciously. This is the best Mediterranean bakery in all of Kentucky and south Ohio. I used to get my baked goods online because all shops are simply not good. Not after Alt-Taj opened though because they have reasonably priced goods and are way fresher than online ones. This shop has an authentic collection of Mediterranean baked goods, tea, and Turkish coffee. Their sweets are fresh and top notch. I had baklava w pistachio and w walnuts, Ghraybeh, and tried all types of Turkish delights. They were all so good and very balanced. Al-taj has delicious savory pie collection great for breakfast, snacking, and they are made fresh just for you upon order. I tried the zatar, labnah , and meat pies and the were all exceptional. Light, delicious fillings, good seasoning and ingredients. I recommend giving them a call to prep pies for you 10 min before you come. The space is spotless and the staff always wear gloves and everything is properly stored and organized. This business is owned very professional, knowledgeable, helpful, patient, and polite lovely family. They will give you the time you need to try things and ask questions. Truly outstanding in every respect. Having noticed the sign while driving by Easter Sunday, we returned on Tuesday to pick up dinner. We had meat sambousek and two types of spinach pastries (one with feta, one with pomegranate) as well as ma'amoul (date-filled pastries), ghraybeh (unbelievably yummy shortbread cookies), and two types of lokum (Turkish delight): raspberry pistachio and chocolate-covered mint and pistachio. The owner is super friendly and enthusiastic, and appropriately proud of the beautiful store interior and of his products. We are from Chicago, and I can with certainty that I've never had better middle eastern pastries there, or anywhere else in the US. Definitely surprised to find food of this quality in Lexington.
