Upon entering the establishment, I was a bit skeptical. I felt as if I have stepped into an all-in-one Chinese household clashed with bad 80's furnishings. The decor was nothing worth mentioning, but I decided to give it a try anyway. Despite of all the superficial aspects, I must say I was in for a surprise. It's not your lovely spa atmosphere, yes, but you definitely get what you pay for. Carol takes extra steps to make sure you are comfortable and informs you about every step she is doing. The facial is very detailed accompanied with a nice hand treatment, wonderful 15-20 mins massage from face to shoulders and arms. The whole facial lasts about an hour and 20 minutes. I arrived there late and she was very accomodating, even staying past closing to finish my session. I originally went in for the one facial price, but I loved it so much I purchased a pack which is good for facials and eyelash extentions for the low low price of $39 per session. You can always split that with a friend or use it for yourself in a span of whenever. ---- UPDATE 01/08/09 ---- They have moved to their new location on Valley and Garfield. I like the new location MUCH better than the fallen old location. Carol is the one who usually gives me my facial and I've always enjoyed her services, but on my last visit I have another staff member who's name I fail to remember. Let me start by saying that just because I have pimples on my face DOES NOT mean I want every single one of them extracted, popped, douched out and left as a carcass. YES it's painful so please DO NOT ridicule me if I flinch and say no more. I don't know about you, but personally I do not enjoy blotches of facial scars. ALSO, please do not casually bring up some new diets that you know of. Thank you for your blatant concern, but I'll take care of that part. Believe me, I've heard and know just about every single fad diet plans available to the market out there. You just worry about my face and nothing more.

The quality of the massages has varied. One time the masseuse didn't give me the full hour (I was charged for the full hour). There can be a language barrier/lapse in communication depending on who's working the phone or front desk at the time which is frustrating. They seem to cater to Chinese tourists/Mandarin language speakers. I wish they would offer prenatal massages/treatments but they don't so I've had to take my business elsewhere the past year!

But I totally see what she meant after my visit) PROS: Friendly staff who was super helpful in accommodating my schedule despite a last minute change on my end. I appreciate that! Also, long facial massage. Unfortunately, that's... kind of it for the pros. CONS: Like Tanya said, the massage was pretty lame. It was more perfunctory rubbing rather than thoughtful massaging. My thoughts usually wander during this relaxing part of a facial, but here, I couldn't help but notice the movements were REALLY repetitive. It was like 3-4 different moves, repeated about 20x. So yes, long massage, but oddly lazy and with virtually no pressure :/ The lotion used did not feel luxurious; it felt like those thin generic hotel ones, and she didn't use enough, so a lot of it was her hands rubbing my face dry. It all just felt so perfunctory (wow, a rare incidence where I got to use an SAT word I learned many years ago!). Same with the post-massage steps. She blew through everything as quickly as possible, to get to the mask part where she could put it on then leave for a really long time. This brings me to the second con: poor noise control. This was kind of ridiculous, but I've never had an esthetician be so oblivious to the noise she's making. There was no music, so she used her phone to play whatever music she found on YouTube (I assume it's YT b/c she had to skip a few ads). That means when she was gone from the room (e.g. during the mask part), she took the phone with her. AND I could hear her movements all over the spa. This included loud, stomping footsteps, banging doors, objects being noisily dumped and moved around. Like, she wasn't even TRYING to be quiet. It felt like someone was packing and moving cinder blocks 10 feet away from me. Speaking of phone, it was placed next to my head while she worked on me, and I could hear AND feel it buzz every 5 seconds. Seriously, who does that? The door BADLY needed some oil on its hinges! It creaked way too loudly for a space that's meant to be calming. I know this sounds like nitpicking, but when you're lying on a bed for 90minutes, and someone is opening and closing the door every 5 minutes, five feet away from your head, it's really noticeable. I try to be an easy, understanding customer, but the poor quality, laziness, and thoughtlessness of this place was pretty mind-blowing. If I'd known, I'd have gone somewhere else. I personally agree with a previous reviewer: this was one of the worst facials I've received (and I've been to many!)

The aesthetician analyzed my skin under a bright magnifying lamp and suggested the Korean Deep Cleansing Aqua Peel. She used a gentle suction tool to clear out the dirt, then applied a cold soothing mask. My skin felt noticeably smoother immediately after, especially around my nose. The consultant told me that she will send through all information in regards to "ultra light to me. I trusted her so I let them injected it on my face before seeing all the product information. After the procedure, I requested her to tell me the official name of the product. She's located upstairs in this plaza (yogurtland in the plaza), to the right of the karaoke place. Still a very quietly understated place, but the quality is SO worth it. This is the best place for facials and eye lash extensions for cheap, that you can still afford to regularly keep up with. Only $45 for either, if you buy 6 upfront which you can use for either and even share with friends. If you buy one offs its $65 a visit. When I was looking around other eyelash extension places started at around $150. The facials are super thorough, and take about an hour half to do. Vanessa at the counter speaks English and ask for facial lady Cheri. My favorite person is May, but she only speaks in Chinese. Make sure you make an appointment in advance there weekend schedule gets filled up pretty quickly. The best part is you can split it with friends, so they get used it pretty quickly. They also have a two person room, if you want to relax with a friend. I also like how they clean up your eyebrows for free with each treatment. They also don't try to oversell you on other things, total pet peeve of mine at other salons. This is definitely one of Los Angeles's Beauty bargain secrets!!

Then I thought - why not check out the San Gabriel area where everything is cheaper and see if there are any good places? I decided to go to Serenity Skin Care based on the price and reviews and I'm glad I did! I went for the natural looking ones (you can go dramatic) and the whole process took about an hour. The results, really natural looking, longer and lusher eyelashes! They do attach each lash individually. It is $60, but if you decide to join their membership, it's a lot cheaper. You have to pre-pay 6 sessions, but getting them at a discount of $45 each. I just didn't want to commit until I saw their results, but now I think I will. Along with the membership, touch-ups (within a month of extensions) are only $10! Now - disclaimer - this is definitely by far not a nice, place, they left the door open the whole time which I thought was weird. But honestly for the price, it's something I can overlook.

This location is just down the street from her other location in the Pinkberry plaza, super close Formosa Cleaners (jeans alteration!). Now that its super hard to fit an appointment in at Serenity on the weekend, its nice that there's a second location to book appointments. I came in on Sunday with my boyfriend and we both had a facial, loved the new place. It's located in a quiet plaza with plenty of parking in front. The outside is very understated, but the inside its beautiful a complete 180 from her other location. They also added some classical music to the overhead speakers, that made my facial very relaxing. The service here and quality is still just as great. Love that the prices are still very affordable and still the best prices I've found for a facial. My friends and I have been going to Carol's for four years now, because where else can you get a deep cleaning hour long facial for $55? They've also improved her eyelash extensions with thinner and less cumbersome eyelashes, same prices as before! They also have a first timer special for $45, of course different prices for lash quality. Carol has now added a few more treatments.
