We will only stay at the Recapture Lodge and make a trip here every year. The owners are the most helpful, genuinely lovely people. The main room where you get breakfast is so charming and they create an open, friendly environment. The rooms are very basic, no frills but fine. Plenty of towels, toiletries, etc. We had a microwave and mini fridge. Everything was very clean and smelled fine. After backpacking and camping this is our haven and first shower in many days. Found this place on the internet as part of our planning for a big tour of Monument Valley. This was the third night of a road trip and we soon realized that Bluff Utah is in the middle of nowhere. No big deal but due to the virus and the fact that it was the end of the season, there were no restaurants open, only the gas station which had a small kitchen and good pizza. But the lodge was the coolest, most unusual motel we've stayed at. It had all the usual amenities but if you look at the construction and walk around the grounds, you can tell that this isn't just any stop. The history of the place and all the interesting 'rustiques', hiking and biking had us pleased to no end. Hat's off to Jim Hook and his predecessor Gene Foushee. read more

Now...this might be a weird review...because our stay was 15 minutes, but our experience at the Recapture Lodge was so special we wanted to share it. My friend and I were driving from Colorado to Sedona, and we'd done a lousy job of planning (by which I mean no planning). We just figured American roads usually have loads of lodging options...we'd make a stop if we wanted to. Yeah. Don't do that anywhere near Monument Valley in May. Our plan was to stop in Bluff and find a room. Hah! Instead we found the owners of this lovely lodge. With their "No Vacancy" lights lit, they welcomed us for a quick pit stop and a few questions about where we might stay anywhere nearby. It was just dark, there was wildlife everywhere, it was a two-lane road, and we had five more hours to go to reach Sedona. No bueno. The RL owners jumped on the phone (landline...there is no cell service in Bluff) FOR US and called six different lodges within 90 minutes. They let us know that most of the others fill up first (closer to main roads), but they tried anyway. And on call number 6, they struck gold (or we did). We fortunately got a room in Mexican Hat, about 30 minutes down the road. Without cell service or any inside knowledge, we would have been lost and in some degree of danger. Doing the rest of our drive in the night was a poor idea. More importantly, if we had done it, we would have missed more natural beauty than our brains can comprehend. We also had the chance to enjoy the near-concert-level performance of one of the owners' four kids on one of two pianos in the lobby. We are just awash with gratitude for this place and this couple. They love life, they love hosting, and hospitality isn't always about a room. Sometimes it's about extending yourself to help and care for people you can't house. We felt the kindest reciprocity would be this review. Support these lodge owners and their family. The entire place has a magical sense of love. read more

Jim and his staff at Recapture Lodge were truly accommodating and made our overnight stay in Bluff one to remember. Our room was clean and well equipped and a outdoor gas BBQ was available to grill our dinner. The Lodge has a refreshing pool/hot tub, and a light breakfast is provided in the lobby in the morning. Lastly, the San Juan River trail can be accessed from the lodge and provides several miles along the river for trail running/hiking. Tried to get a reservation for Nov 30 to Dec 3. The guy on the phone, presumably the owner, said they were closed and ALL the places, including resterunts are closed as well. Grouchy dude, told us to go try Mexican Hat to see if anything was open. Grouchy dude was wrong, we found every place we called (other than Recapture Lodge) was still open, and welcoming. Not sure why the grouchy dude was trying to personally close the whole city of Bluff, maybe he doesn't like tourists? read more

Absolutely love this cozy hotel. Recapture Lodge is the perfect place to stay when visiting the four corners region. Bluff is a beautiful southwestern town, not to be overlooked when driving between Monument Valley and Moab. Many natural hidden gems in this town that I don't even want to give away. The staff at The Recapture is the best in town and always make me feel at home when I come for a visit. They are always very helpful and can suggest many hikes in the area. Beautiful surrounding grounds of the lodge are a great way to start your day. I love doing the short hike behind the lodge to the San Juan River in the morning. I recommend visiting in the fall or spring. Going when it is warm? They have a nice pool and even a big hot tub. read more

The reknown Recapture Lodge is a basic motel that was built a long time ago. This is not the Holiday Inn Express or the Waldorf Astoria. Being an older motel, the floors creak, the beds are squishy, the showers are torrential, the furnishings are formica and everything is basic. There are small fridges and microwaves in the rooms. No A/C. It's family owned-Luanne, Jim and everyone else employed there are SO FRIENDLY AND HELPFUL. If you need information about the area or what to do or where to go, they know it all. Customer service-wise, they're the Nordstrom of southwest Utah! They know how to make you feel welcome and I LOVED that! So worth the money for the customer service. They have a foosball table, magazines, books to peruse. There's a pool and jacuzzi. Breakfast is yoplait, bananas, oatmeal and fresh coffee. Basic, but the information about the surrounding area that the owners share is invaluable! read more

I got two nights here and had a very pleasant experience. In the kindest sense, this is a rustic hotel. Are you expecting lots of frills like a hair dryer and coffee maker in the room, and a thousand channels on your TV, and a phone in the room? Then look elsewhere. What Recapture provides which is very fun is a open reading/rec room with binders and books and materials on the area for you to study and possibly borrow while you explore the Bluff region. Topographic maps and clippings from articles and so much more. If you're here to see birds, hike, 4x4, ride the river, or learn the history of Bluff, there is much to obtain here (and there is a piano too!). My room had a comfy bed, hot shower (wonderful shower), and complimentary organic soaps. There is a sitting desk with chairs and a TV that provides some basic stuff, including a couple of movie channels, but really, who is here to watch TV? The floor squeaks a bit so I was worried about the people below me (if I'm below, will I mind them walking above?). There's seating outside so you can chill on the deck and get to know the people staying next to you, who could be very friendly and like-minded adventurers. There is a nice walk to the river, and a pool and jacuzzi (seasonal) and outdoor grilling and a play area for kids. In the morning they serve a basic simple breakfast that is carb heavy, lots of breads and bagels, from about 6 to maybe 11, and there's tea and coffee. The front desk is friendly and helpful and eager to chat. Call in advance. If you're here to explore Bluff, you should consider Recapture. read more

We stayed here one night and loved every minute of it. The owner/manager and his wife were incredibly nice. They let us pick our room and made sure we had everything we needed--also offered us all the information for dining in Bluff. As for the room, it was pretty basic. Considering where we were and the price, I'd say it was just right. It had cable TV, it was clean, and the bed was pretty comfy. The pool is open 24/7, which was a nice bonus. Check this place out if you are ever in the middle of nowhere, UT. It's a real treat! read more

Staff are super knowledgeable and helpful. If you love the Four Corners, this place is the perfect spot to stay for the desert, San Juan River, Monument Valley, Bears Ears, Hovenweep, Canyonlands (Needles), Valley of the Gods, the Moki Dugway, the Navajo & Ute reservations, and other spectacular sites, plus countless ruins, historic and prehistoric, and the greatest movie locations. I loved this little inn. They were so accomodating and friendly. After hours of driving from the Grand Canyon, we were desperate for a place to stop and get some shut eye. There was not in the surrounding areas, so we were weary about this place. However, the room was clean and perfect for the 12 hours were there. Maybe a little out of date, but we weren't there long enough for it to matter. Also, the price was right for what we got. It is especially important to note how amazing the staff was there. They gave great tips, were helpful, told great stories, and made the overall experience a pleasant one. read more

Really a basic hotel although the service is decent. The rooms are clean and there is a fridge, hairdryer, and tv (which we did not use). The beds are squishy and there is limited soap with no shampoo or conditioner. The shower faucet is hard to manage. There is free wifi in the rooms but no cell service and the landline is not reliable. Breakfast is basic with bananas, bagels,milk, cereal and oatmeal. I found this place by accident a few years ago, and, as it was close to dark and I was in the middle of the desert, I decided to stay. The owner reminded me of Ewell Givens. The room was sparse, but comfortable but no TV, which was OK as I was whipped. They sent me to this log cabin restaurant in town where I was introduced to Navaho Taco on Navaho Fry Bread and they had ice cold artisian spring water. When I got back to the motel, I had no sooner sit down that there was a knock at the door. It was the owner and he said that there was going to be an eclipse of the moon and he was inviting us all out to watch - so I went. We stood around and watched the moon rise between the bluffs of the San Juan River, then were wowed by the eclipse. What a great night. The next morning, I had coffee and muffins from the office. A great place to stay in SE Utah. There is a very relaxed atmosphere, the prices are reasonable, and the rooms are clean & tidy. The reading room with books and maps is great, especially if you are looking for something to do and see or if you need to research your trip a little more. There are also usually other people in there who you can talk to to get more information for your adventure, be it rafting, 4 wheeling or backpacking. Second stay here. WAs here 10 yrs ago and it is still the same. A step back in time. The staff here is so helpful and friendly. Rooms very clean and pretty spacious. 'They include a basic breakfast, excellent coffee. A popular place for archeologists and geologists visiting the area. Great proximity to Monument VAlley and so much American Indian history. We stayed here for one night during our road trip because everything else in and around bluff was full. Way too overpriced for the type of room you get. The bed was extremely uncomfortable, the sheets were very itchy, the towels smelled dirty and there were bugs/spiders in the room and bathroom. We also did not have a fridge or microwave. So for $95 dollars totally not worth it. You can find a hotel for $60 dollars which includes the fridge and microwave. I would say plan ahead and make a reservation at a nicer hotel, don't get stuck at Recapture like we did. read more

Pulling into town later in the day, realizing it was a long way before we found another place to stay, we found the Recapture. We had the "budget" room, and loved it. It was clean. One night stopover on way to Arches National Park. Hotel and room were rustic. Wash basin did not have any hot water, a minor inconvenience. However, floors squeaked terribly with every step. Ok, to start off, we are in Bluff, UT, so there aint any hiltons. When you're the kinda person that's gona go on a vacation in this region, obviously you're an adventurer so you know that. This is definitely the place to stay. The rooms are rustic, but that's part of the adventure. For the type of trip we were goin' on, this was perfect. I was impressed that there were TVs in our room. I stayed there two times, one night before going on an overnight river rafting/camping trip and the night after that trip. The first night we had a small rustic room, not much to it. Second time, our room was very spacious with a nice big kitchen. You can request a room with a kitchen and such. The beds aren't too comfortable, but hey they're fine. I was just relieved that the place was nice enough when I got there that I wasn't scared of scorpions crawling on me in the night, it was très nice. I loved being down in bluff where you could easily drive to the twin rocks cafe which was GREAT, and the lodge is right across the street from what I heard was an amazing mexican food place that I didn't get the chance to go to. When you go to the main lobby area, it's so nice and the staff are very nice and I got the vibe that it was a family business and they lived upstairs;very homey feel. They have things like postcards for sale in there, and you can go into the room over where there are tables for the continental style breakfast in the morning (very nice, kind of an experience when you eat there in the morning because everybody is with their families coming all the way from EUROPE nobody speaking english, I heard lots of french, german, I think I heard portugese too. I have no idea how they trekked there because it was hard enough coming from NY). There is also a computer that you can use the internet on (at least, there wasn't a sign saying you couldn't use it) a piano, and a ton of books especially lots of books about the area/history, geography, anything you can think of that's relevant, and tons of maps, every kind of map, and cool knick knacks like a deck of flash cards of images from landmarks in the four corners region. Very cute and fun and enjoyable and awesome, it was so much fun getting out of NYC and coming to a place like this. They also have a pool and hot tub for the record which I heard was very pleasant but I didn't have the chance to go. Definitely stay here if you are going on a rafting trip with Wild Rivers Expeditions, you can literally walk right over to their place. read more

Online reservation process was easy. Once we arrived, check-in was super easy and the staff (probably the proprietor's daughter) was helpful and friendly. After unpacking, my daughters headed straight for the pool to cool off. The building isn't brand new, but the rooms were clean, well-maintained and large. I didn't hear sounds from neighboring rooms, although the hotel was sold out. The front desk had menus of local restaurants to make it easy to decide where to go for dinner. Breakfast the next morning was simple and good. Basically, the price was right and the location was perfect for this tourist and his family. We stopped here after visiting Hovenweep and Four Corners, and it was perfect. (Note, beware of a local scam (not this hotel!): we gave a local hitchhiker a ride near Four Corners, he said he was headed to California after attending his mom's funeral. He asked for money, we didn't give him any, and dropped him off heading to Kayenta. Next day, we saw him hitchhiking heading east in Bluff. Heading to California, huh?) read more
