    Dawn at the view cabins
    Michelle L.

The cabins at the view hotel are what dream vacations are made of. Greeted every dawn with a sight so spectacular, so awe inspiring you feel touch by Mother Nature herself and forever changed. But I know you're thinking ...yada yada... but what's it like sleeping there? Truth? It's a cabin in the desert and it's feels just like that. It's cozy inside but enough space for our family of 4 to feel comfortable. There isn't much space for a lot of extra items so keep that in mind. But It's dusty, there is zero sound proofing and you hear everything. But we still slept great. Now as dawn approached the first day we set on premium view deck, coffee in hand for nature's dazzling display. But as it got closer the area in front of our premium view flooded with people. Maybe they were other non premium view cabin guests. I'm not sure. but at first I wasn't too pleased that I paid extra. But as I walked down and joined the crowd something happened. We were just a group of travelers, pilgrims who had come together at this one moment in time to share an incredible experience. People from all over the world standing in the cold oohing and awwwwwing together. Without destination or translation I turned into the appointment camera phone operator to take once in a lifetime pictures of these beautiful strangers one by one. Couples, families, friends. As I took each picture all I saw joy! All so happy for this special chance. This special place was on my bucket list. And what it gifted me was beautiful! Because as we shared the experience... the world didn't feel so big and our differences didn't feel so different anymore. Isn't that how it should be? Because once you feel it, it doesn't leave you.

The Good - Can't beat the scenery. Room was dated but in good order. Clean. The Bad and the Ugly - The food is just awful. A bad cafeteria at best. I'm being kind here.

For the price you'd expect more but this is what you got to pay for a hotel at an iconic location or National Park, high demand, sole location and no competitors. Service was MEH, worse than I got at any US park lodge, just the minimal and cursory service. I got the feeling they didn't care if you were pissed off and never came back, terrible attitude. You come for the views, all but two rooms per floor should have a view, but too many clueless people leave their balcony lights on ruining the sky view. Also they hotel leaves the patio lights on, for safety reason taking away from night time views. If you want iconic start or sunrise or sunset hire a private guided tours, they are worth it even if you have your own SUV. View restaurant has limited menu, get to take out Indian food offered from in room delivery, better but still just consider at fair food level. Breakfast is also budget motel level not what you'd expect paying so much for a room. This is such a special place sad the owners don't have some business or ecology sense or they could really make it iconic and charge 25% more and make it a five star experience, but takes culture and business sense. 3 stars due to terrible service and crazy price and simply 2 star accommodations at premium hotel pricing. I'd come back again because it's far better to say here than 30' outside for a lot cheaper in similar level accommodation.

    Phel Steinmetz signed print

In early 2000 I was helping my friend Phel Steinmetz setup his new computer.  He offered me any print of his in return.  I asked for a signed panorama of Monument Valley.  It's been hanging in my room ever since.  One day Maggie decided we should visit Monument Valley and see where the photo was taken. Maggie picked the View Hotel cabin to stay during our visit. We drove onto Navajo land and made our way to cabin 6.  There was a queen size bed and a 2 person bunk bed in a separate area.  Kitchen had a microwave, sink, and full size fridge and freezer.  I appreciated there was enough room for all my ice packs plus at least 4 half gallons of ice cream.  There are no utensils or plates so bring your own if you want them. The cabins are very nicely constructed with wood throughout.  Windows were low-E 3 with vinyl frames and very good at keeping the cold out.  It was 43F outside at 8pm but nice inside with the heater off. Awesome view of Monument Valley from the living room and the front porch. Each day started in darkness.  The landscape slowly lit up.  The sun reflected off the clouds while still below the horizon. Colors changed from a brownish red to golden yellow.  Yellow glow became brighter and brighter.  Was amazing watching streams of light pouring out from the buttes in front of our living room.  I watched till the sun rose above the buttes and the light became too bright to look at. I loved our stay at the View Cabin.  It was magical seeing the view Phel Steinmetz captured decades ago.  Loved the privacy.  Excellent gift shop with lots of authentic crafts and artwork.  Maggie picked out a lovely Navajo ring.  It started to snow as we left. I will now have memories of my friend Phel Steinmetz's time in Monument Valley and following in his footsteps. Beautiful views! Very comfortable. Restaurant isn't anything special but we didn't come for the food.

This is not a national park just a heads up. The positive! This is the place to stay to enjoy the valley. Make sure you check in before sunset to enjoy the valley and the sunrise is amazing coming up over the valley in the morning. The negative ! I have stayed here a couple times now and it seems to be getting more nickel and dime you! The breakfast went from being a nice warm and fresh to a motel 6 grab and go stale bread, and pop tarts. Then to top it off you're paying about $300 a night (Saturday) and you don't get access to the park! They want you to drive back down the hill and get in line to pay $8 a person to enter. Which is fine but come on you can't purchase at the front desk! I would recommend you stay for one night and move on to another location It only take one day to experience the valley.

This is a nice hotel to stay at if you want amazing views of Monument Valley from your room. There are only two hotels in the surrounding area. This one is the newer of the two (opened in 2008). The View is the only hotel located within the boundaries of Monument Valley. You get great views of the buttes and mesas below. There are close to 100 rooms that are decorated with vibrant Southwestern colors and art. They have a full-service restaurant and a large gift shop that sells authentic Navajo art and jewelry. The gift shop also sells hand carved kachina dolls. If you eat at the View restaurant you have to try some Indian Fry Bread! The plaza area outside of the hotel also gives you great views of the Valley if you just want to pull up and park. I think the best time to view Monument Valley is sunset as the sun lights up the sandstone buttes to a bright orange color. You can book a 17-mile Monument Valley loop tour here at the hotel. You just have to register your car.

Here's what to expect: clean house with access to kitchen; mini-fridge to store your perishables; basic, comfortable rooms; clean bathroom with towel included; good WiFi (I didn't have phone service while I was there); soft, red sand to bury your tired toes in; lots of sitting areas in front of the house to watch a beautiful sunset against the iconic Monument Valley red rocks; 30min short hike out back to Tear Drop Arch; amazing night sky; friendly, curious cat named Kyle to pet at your pleasure; grill available for your use; Navajo fry bread breakfast can be arranged. Anything else you need, just ask! Ilene is a very nice, local, Native business owner. If you are looking for a room, call Ilene between 9am-6pm Mountain Standard Time (US) to book one of the comfortable, basic rooms in the main house or the cute little cabin next door with it's own AC unit (a popular option apparently). If you are budget conscious, you can pitch a tent or car-camp in her yard for cheap. Walk-ins are welcome, but call ahead of time just to make sure there is a room available or space for you in her yard AND she knows when to expect you. Once you book, consider these BEFORE heading there for a more pleasant arrival and stay! 1) FOLLOW THE RED LINE TO THE YELLOW X on the map (see picture)! Lots of people get lost using GPS to get there...me included! 2) The location is on soft, red sand so be careful not to get stuck on the way up. 4x4 recommended but not necessary. 3) There are a handful of dogs that run around the neighborhood freely. If you are allergic or afraid of dogs, watch out! Also, some like to bark at night...BRING EARPLUGS! 4) If you are planning on pitching a tent, make sure to bring some heavy duty stakes to stake your tent down. There were a few bursts of wind that rocked my car the night I stayed there (car-camping).
