We stayed here in late January (off-season). Make sure you have a full tank of gas for the drive, especially if you plan to drive the scenic view. Cell service is spotty. If you are an animal lover, have some extra dog food and water to help strays along the way.
We stayed in room 119 with a "premium view". Our room was quite clean (very important to me) and decorated with local native artwork, available in the gift shop for purchase. A nice touch. Being that we were ground level, our balcony was a decent size, complete with chairs and table. In the right weather, we no doubt would have spent a good amount of time out there! I was told the top floor balconies are smaller but have a cut-away roof for stargazing. I will note, if you are allergic to fragrance, you may want to discuss with the hotel prior, as the sheets smelled like they were cleaned with dryer sheets. Albeit, a nice clean smell. One criticism, I wish the room offered a sheer curtain option, rather than just blackout curtains, so we could have a bit of privacy but still see the view. That being said, we never experienced anyone walking outside our ground-floor balcony. The bathroom had a hairdryer, plenty of towels, shampoo/conditioner/bar soap, box of tissues, and decent water pressure. However, please be courteous and don't take long showers.. this is high desert area, water is a blessing, and many of the locals don't have running water themselves. The room had two queen beds, three pillows and an extra throw blanket on each. Another criticism: the beds were very hard. Some people like this, we do not, so our sleep wasn't great. The room had a tv, microwave, mini fridge, safe, desk and chair, and a separate lounge chair, and small closet with hangers. The heat unit worked nicely. I'm unsure what the WiFi situation was. We had enough cell service to text and make voice calls but not FaceTime. We never heard anyone through the walls, in the hallway, or doors slamming.
The hotel itself was nicely decorated and laid out in such a way that no matter where you were, there was a gorgeous view. Outside, there were lots of different areas and tables to enjoy the views. All the staff was friendly enough, although fairly reserved and quiet. The gift shop was big, with tons of local native crafted items including artwork, kachina dolls, tons of jewelry, dreamcatchers, pottery, and of course the usual stickers, magnets, shot glasses, etc. There are vending machines with candy, chips, and pop. Much to my delight there were four crushed penny machines! Please note, the hotel and gift shop is cashless so you'll need to stock up on pennies before you arrive, although there is a quarter change machine available. The Lee Cly Trail is available for hiking right outside the hotel.
*Here's my reason for deducting a star. And I hate to do it, but I don't want anyone else surprised and disappointed. The restaurant is terrible! Truly the worst part of the hotel. The menu is somewhat limited. All dishes pricey for what you get. But most importantly.. the food is bland and clearly thawed to order. Given it's remote area, I understand things need to be frozen. But there's a right way and wrong way to do it. Let's just say, it's clear there's no chef in the kitchen, just some employees working for a wage. It honestly seems like dressed up fast food. Our waiter stopped by to take our order, and then again to drop the check. No more than three sentences were exchanged between us. We still tipped 20% but he didn't do anything to earn it. Something else to note, the led lights around the outer seating were blindingly bright. Not a great mood setter. Also making it impossible to see the view outside. Looking around, everyone was quiet and no one seem thrilled. The only other food available in the area is at Goulding's. (I did read there's a Mexican place, but couldn't find it on the map.) Being that it was snowing, we opted to take our chances at The View restaurant. We should have just brought dinner from home and ate in the room. Something else to note, the hotel is dry, meaning there is no alcohol available, though they did offer nonalcoholic beer. The continental breakfast the next morning was even worse. There was sugary cereal, yogurt, and bagels. We ended up throwing half our food away. If I was solely rating the food/restaurant, I'd give it one, maybe two stars. The only redeeming quality being the view. If The View wants better ratings, return guests, and the vibe of being a top-notch hotel.. they'll have to address this first and foremost as it really brings down the whole experience.
Unfortunately, due to heavy snow fall overnight and throughout the next day, the scenic view drive was closed :( Understandable and not anyones fault. But please know it's a possibility. We also heard from other guests that the road was bumpier than expected (also fine, it's nature!) so don't expect to take your sports car out. Motorcycles are prohibited. read more
