Perched in a relatively remote location, the Hat Rock Inn offers a nice vantage along the San Juan River, with views of the bluffs from the lovely pool and patio areas. The rooms are comfortable and spacious enough, but service overall is a bit lacking. The front desk is not open until after 2 p.m., and the staff members are not particularly well informed, given that this is a town with almost no general service or supply options (e.g., the hotel itself offers no dining or coffee, and the person at the desk pointed us to a pizza restaurant that has been closed for months). The housekeeping staff left something to be desired as well. Service is upon request, but that means tracking someone down and ensuring a one-for-one trade of dirty and clean. Understandable, but when I ask for one clean washcloth and am instead handed two or three by a given staff member, I don't expect to be chided by another staff member standing with us in the supply room. What it lacked in hospitality and service, it did make up for in scenery. read more

This hotel more than met the needs of five people who had spent several nice nights on the road camping and traveling across country. Check in was easy and they opened the pool for the kids despite the weather being cold at night. Parking is ample and accommodates large vehicles which was necessary due to the height of our jeeps. It's located across from a convenience store with a gas station that has diesel. I recommend this for those in need of a place to stay while in the area. read more

A lovely, quiet hotel in a beautiful setting overlooking the San Juan River. The cafe next door is open 6 AM until 6 PM, so make sure you eat somewhere if you are arriving later. The Swinging Steak BBQ joint, (delicious), just up the road is open until late. Spacious, well upgraded rooms have a big flatscreen TV, wifi, microwave, fridge and coffee maker with free coffee. Lovely setting with a swimming pool, hot tub and a cool trail down to the river. Helpful, accommodating and knowledgeable staff. Highly recommended! read more

The beds were comfortable, the pool was great, the view on the back side of the motel was marvelous, the motel was very clean all around, and the staff was super friendly and helpful. The rooms are a little on the small size; however, they make up for it in the premium beds and a recent remodel makes them feel more modern then most motel rooms I have stayed at. The bathrooms also look newer and have excellent water pressure. Don't hesitate to stay here, it's a diamond in the rough. read more

Mexican Hat is located 16miles from Monument Valley. There're a few motels in Mexican Hat, 2 restaurants and 1 or 2 gas stations. This inn looked like a place from old western movie. A two story wooden building with open floors. Motel manager, an Indian lady told us our room was the last room available ..Generally I don't trust when the motel manager's saying that line. It's hard to believe most of the times. No conti breakfast what so ever served the next morning. There's a key drop box In front of the closed office . A coffee machine was in the room, but no coffee. Though we're glad we found a plce to sleep so close to the Monument Valley. read more

Errr Ma Gerrr! I love this place! I recently stayed here as part of a car rally and I was immediately enchanted by the whole property. Living in a major city, you get used to the Cement Jungle, but when you stay at the Hat Rock Inn, it's a whole other world. First, there's the San Juan River right outside our door. It took me about an hour to realize the river was RIGHT THERE! I kept hearing donkeys braying, and locating them is how I found the river. In the morning, there were a bunch of cows! Now if you know me and have read my reviews, I'm all about the hot tub. This property was booked ahead of time by the car rally, so I was thankful that they had a working whirlpool. They have a beautiful outdoor pool/hot tub. You can see out to the stars. My husband and I spent a lot of time pruning our skin and debating whether we were looking at the Big or Little Dipper. It was heavenly. The staff are very nice and told us a little bit about the Hogan (Navajo Mud Huts). There was also a situation where the sink and toilet plugged up. I'm guessing they run on pumps because after I called the Front Desk to report the overflow, about 15 minutes later the water drained itself and all was good. The rooms were very comfortable and there is a small fridge included. Parking is right in front of your door. This place is great for active people. I would not recommend it for people that don't walk too much. The ground is dirt and rock around the area and you have to step up a 2 ft cement walkway to get into your room. If you have a wheelchair, I would mention that in your reservation so you get the room closest to the ramp. I would recommend Hat Rock Inn and look forward to planning a trip around staying here in the future. read more

Were it not for the Yelp reviewers, I might have gone right by this place, and that would have been a mistake. From the road it looks like many sad hotels that have seen better days. But there is not much choice in the area, it had been a long and tiring day in the sun, and the Yelp reviews were good. So we checked in, and I was quite surprised. Do not be discouraged by the rustic appearance of the front of the place. The back of the hotel looks out over the cliffs along the San Juan river, and the view extends from there. There is peace and quiet and beauty surrounding you. Our room was very comfortable and clean. Super comfy beds, excellent bathroom and good air conditioner. There is a pool that looked very inviting, but it was a chilly day, so we didn't try it out. So happy that Mexican Hat ( population 31 ) has a hotel like this. read more

The pool was extremely nice including a view on river and canyon. We had a very nice view of the stars (no moon nor clouds) and light pollution was less than usual (the hotel itself could be more conscious, but it was really okay). Rooms were standard. The eatery was full in the morning and looked like a dark noisy hole - we turned around and skipped breakfast . That was a shame, because with that scenery in the back yard you could create a beautiful spot with little effort. read more

This hotel is a great little spot! I stayed here with my husband for two nights. Hat Rock has a great location and amazing views of the river. Book online directly with the hotel to request a 2nd floor river view room. It's updated and offered all that we needed. No breakfast, which was the only bummer. BUT check-in was a breeze with Jessica at the front desk! She was very professional and oh-so patient with the demanding people who checked in ahead of me. Good people here. We would stay here again. The Hat Rock Inn is a lovely newly remodeled hotel. There are so many things about this place I loved. The decor was elegant, they have shampoo, conditioner and shower gel dispensers in the shower, a Kerig coffee maker and delicious coffee just to name a few. The beds and pillows were melt into them comfortable! We had an awesome view out our window too. They leave older towels for you to use. We ride motorcycles so it's nice to be able to wipe the bike off a little after riding all day. It is within walking distance to several restaurants. I gave them 4 stars instead of 5 because I thought it was a bit overpriced and the cafe attached that they recommend for breakfast, with a 15% hotel guest discount, was not very good. read more

OK. This is a rather unique place, and normal reviews don't belong here. You're looking at a motel that has certainly seen better years, but is in a really unique location. Looking at this place from the outside, you'd swear it was ready to be condemned. But within each of the rooms, the money has been spent on updating them nicely. You can tell the structure itself needs some help, as the floor creaks like hell, and there are bumps and ridges underneath the thick carpeting. But--great view out the back, and very quiet. A little pricey I thought given it's bones, but perhaps that's the going rate. Also, the hot tub out back was actually a warm tub. Too bad, as that would be awesome. And ... my door had apparently been jimmied at some point in time, as there was a nice gap where the lock engages the striker. read more

This didn't look like a 5 star from the outside and at first I wasn't sure if we wanted to stay here or drive on but I asked to look at a room and wow, I was pleasantly surprised. The room was spacious and clean and looked recently remodeled. There was a view of the canyon wall as well as the bridge and river. They had several places you could sit outside to relax and enjoy the view. And then there was a brand new pool where you could look out over the Canyon. There was a path that led down to the river which my Grandson loved. The staff was very helpful and courteous. The landscaping and pool area under construction but did not interfere with the use of the facilities. I would stay here again in a heart beat. read more

But I have to say, this little place is a treasure -- smack in the middle of Nowhere. It appeared that our room had been recently remodeled. It was tastefully decorated and spotlessly clean. The bed was supper comfortable and they had lots of fluffy pillows. The refrigerator was medium sized (you'll only get a tenny-tiny one from the Marriort) and the microwave was already in the room. There's not much in the area, so it's a little pricey. Somewhere around $145 for a double queen room. We only stayed for one night, chose a room upstairs to try and avoid noise from stompy feet. The lady behind reception was friendly and the room was nice. Didn't hear a thing all night! The air con worked great, fridge (with little freezer) worked fine, tv worked great, wifi was good - no real issues but a little slow (you are in the middle of nowhere), ice machine & vending machine down the end of each floor. Instead of mini bottles of lotion, conditioner etc they have wall dispensers in the shower and over the hand basin. There's a pool that we didn't use but it was hot when we arrived and plenty of people were swimming. read more

We unexpectedly had to stay in town. We decided to stay here after checking with different hotels. The rooms are clean, bathrooms clean and the receptionist (I forgot her name we checked in around 630 on 7/5/17) was very nice and friendly. They also had a pool and hot tub so swimming is an option! My wife had some misgivings at my choice of reservations when we pulled up. Clean but older outside and a river rock drive and parking, but when she opened the door to the newly remodeled room she was pleasantly surprised. The rooms are a fair size and clean, with new Kureig single cup makers. Very friendly and helpful staff. No breakfast There is a fire pit with chairs and a picnic table over looking the river, and a nice pool Only 2 restaurants in town and one doesn't open till 4pm. We stayed at Hat Rock Inn for a night on our road trip, and we were very pleasantly surprised! The room was clean and comfortable, the pool was amazing and refreshing, and you cannot bet the view of the Utah desert! Mexican Hat is a small town but it's filled with great amenities and great hospitality. The only complaint is that it is a little pricey, but that's about average when you're one of only a couple hotels in this stretch of Utah. Overall, I would definitely recommend, and I am hoping to make a trip back very soon! read more

This location is just wonderful! I recently stayed here with my father on a motorcycle trip through around AZ and UT. The front desk woman was super helpful - we accidentally booked a night later in the week - but she changed our night and got us one of the last rooms they had available. Overall, you need to set your expectations accordingly. There aren't many good places to stay in and around this area for many miles - choices are limited. Given options, I would gladly stay here again. San Juan would be my second consideration. Another reviewer mentioned things about lack of wake up call, breakfast, etc etc. This isn't a Hilton - its a small cozy place in a beautiful area. It could be viewed as on the pricier side (we paid ~$135 if I recall) - but as a function of supply/demand -- there aren't many other good options in the surrounding areas. Plus, its amazing they can stay in business at those rates, as I'm sure there are many times of the year were no travelers are going through that area of the country. We were there over Memorial Day weekend, so it was pretty hopping. The exterior leaves something to be desired, though fits in with the landscape better than some big chain hotel. The interior is very clean and nice - and quite honestly better than some of the major hotel chains we stayed in during our journey. read more

We found this place for our travels to the four corners/ Mesa verde travels. We wanted something between Grand Canyon and the above places for a reasonable price. Don't let the outside fool you. After all it is a motel with a southwestern look. Inside the staff were friendly and lobby nice. We had a room in back on second floor facing the San Juan river. Very clean room. Bathroom a bit small, but doable. The outside area by the river and pool area are nice. The weather was too cool to enjoy the pool, but would be an excellent area to relax after hiking or during travel if temperature allowed. I would definitely stay here again if in the area. No frills, relaxing and really reasonable price wise. Very small "town": gas station, couple motels, general store and one restaurant. The swinging steak restaurant . (over priced for what you get. My husband and I were on a road trip with our 12 year old granddaughters. We enjoyed one night here. Agreeing with the other positive things in the reviews, I can add that the pool was one of the favorites of our trip. It had a lovely ambience with the palm trees and the red rock bluffs that line the river. The lighting in the evening was nice in the pool area and the pool furniture comfortable. There is a path that goes down to the river which made for some fun exploring, though in August the water was running fast and red. It might be more swimmable in other seasons. The staff were pleasant and answered our questions (like where to get food). We were glad of a good working refrigerator, microwave and internet connection. The staff was accommodating above the call of duty to mail home to us a couple of things we left in the room. We would stay there again when in the area. read more
