Today I heard our Yard Trimmings bin get picked up, but less than an hour later, when I went out to bring the bin in, it was gone. I checked with the neighbors, then called Recology. The Customer Service Representative I spoke to was SO nice and helpful! She said she would have a new bin delivered, then apologized because it couldn't be delivered until Wednesday--- that's just two days, no apology necessary, in my opinion! I jokingly said, "I guess I better put the address on this one!" and she said, "Oh, we can do that for you!" And at no extra charge! AMAZING customer service! Made my day! read more

I got into a big stupid argument yesterday with " Mason " one of the managers at the Recology recycling center in San Carlos regarding them refusing to dump my compost container because it had chopped up ivy and un-bagged dog poop in it !!! He insisted that I should dump it into the blue garbage container and that they were going to charge me for a special trip to come back out to dump it . I came un-glued about the stupidity of his remarks and un-movable position and then he hung-up on me and refused to talk to me when I called them back . The lady who answered the phone had to convince him to talk to me again and we agreed on having them send a supervisor out to inspect the situation . He came over in about an hour , dumped it into the container that he brought with him , and said that everything was fine and apologized for the unnecessary problems that I had encountered . Apparently dog poop is not considered compost although if you go on-line it says it's GREAT for compost ! Incompetent stupid rules in management should NOT be tolerated and must be addressed and fixed intelligently ! Which makes me wonder if the bags provided in parks and such for dog poop disposal are biodegradable or not ?...They should be ! read more

The Recology online website service request does not work. I have service in Foster City, CA I put in an online request 3 months ago to downsize our service from 64 gallons to 32 Gallons. I received a confirmation email back. 3 months later i still have the 64 gallon container and bills for 64 gallon containers. I called the San Carlos office, they acknowledged that I did put in the online service change request, but that I would still have to pay for the 64 gallon service. read more

I have been grateful for good service over the years and when they missed a pick-up they quickly responded. Something has changed. I have been trying for four days to get them to pick up the trash they missed. They have not responded to emails. Phone calls have resulted in promises to pick up which have not been done. Assurances have been made that a supervisor would be called, only to be denied later. I have asked, but there is apparently no way to speak with a manager, etc. read more

This complaint is primarily regarding their recycling pick up, regardless of the calls I've made complaining about the service the driver continuously drops the recycling all over our street, half the time the bin still has a considerable amount of recycling in it and periodically he doesn't pick it up at all. Not like you have much choice in the matter but for folks who do have options avoid this company like the plague. I have paid on time for many years and have gotten the run around every time I try to schedule a large pickup (supposedly we get 2 'free' large pickups per year). We are moving now and when I called for a large pickup we were told they do not do extra pickups for the ENTIRE MONTH of January. They will only pickup Bags on regularly scheduled trash days. Guess the trash will be out on the curb for 5+ days as I am not sitting around waiting for garbage day to move. I really hope the city reads the yelp reviews before they consider renewing the contract with these lazy cretins. It won't be my problem soon and for that I am terribly grateful. If I could give zero stars I would. They are violent with the trash cans and leave trash on the street on a regular basis. This latest interaction is just adding insult to injury. read more

I remember the good old days when BFI had the garbage pick up in Redwood City. In 20 years they never missed picking up my trash. But somehow these awful drivers with Recology have managed to "miss'' picking up my garbage a half dozen times. What is there to miss? There is a garbage can on the curb where you have requested it and yet you miss it? The recycle and green compost bins have been emptied but you just "miss" the garbage can??!! Really?? Lazy drivers not doing their job. Last Christmas I put my Christmas tree out exactly as they requested on the day they requested and it sat outside for over two weeks, I kept calling to complain and they kept saying they were coming to get the tree. I really cannot believe we are paying so much for this type of service. The front desk admin was rude. I greeted to her first and she never smile a bit during the time I was there to pay for the past due bill. When I asked her that I did the online payment a month or so ago, why it did not work? Bummer....the good customer service I first experienced with Recology has been overshadowed by the drivers who, periodically, do not pick up the trash. Would be less infuriating if they said, "oops, sorry we missed you, and that your trash is piling up!", but that has never been how they handle it. Every, single time I've called the agent to ask why they didn't pick up the trash, they tell me the same thing... the driver reported that they were there to pick it up, but my bins were not put out. Not sure if they are confused or chronic liars, but the bin is always out on the same day, in the same place, and it gets tiring playing these games between the people who answer the phone, and those who pick up the trash. They have no problem charging my credit card for their service, on the dot, every time, rain or shine, whether or not they provide the service. read more

so Recology offers two free bulk items pick ups a year. That is true unless you want to have it done in December. Then they are "sold out" for appointments and can only pick up extra trash bags. I can even understand "sold out" part if you can have an extra pick up the following year. But - not their policy. I do not get how you can offer and promote a service you have no ability to provide it at 100% or, at the very least have a contingency plan. read more

They're nice when you call but their trucks are SO LOUD, it's very disturbing. It doesn't help that they come at 6 pm. I'm not sure why the 3 trucks don't follow each other so we're only woken up once. It's a suggestion. How about some trucks that don't break the sound barrier when they come through. Let me start out by saying if your going to dump anything go to scavenger in ssf or rethink waste in sf right off the candlestick park exit. I do not know who is managing this facility but whoever thinks a yard stick is a proper way to price your trash is crazy. I had hoped that with change from Allied Waste to Recology the service would improve, after their first week, well so much for making a first impression. I hate to be this harsh, but Recologyy has had months to prepare for this. There was plenty of marketing spin behind it, but how about an acceptable level of service to back-up the marketing hype. I saw the news footage last night and what a joke it was to hear them and news media try and put a spin on their poor service. I'm still waiting for these guys to come get my Christmas tree. I've called their customer service now four times and I've received four different stories, this is something that just hasn't changed from Allied Waste. The real sad part about all of this is that Recology hasn't been shy about saying they are increasing the rates, but it seems there aren't any penalties for their drop in service levels. read more

Recology is the worst, period. Recently they failed to pick up recycling, then promised to pick it up the next day, then they didn't, then promised again for the next day, then failed again. On the third day of promising they finally managed to accomplish the task - the next day. Hooray! This was, of course, in addition to several other instances where Recology couldn't handle their job and manage to empty one of my recycle bins. Other than that, it is quite typical to wake up and find trash strewn all about the street in front of the house - thanks for the sloppy work, guys. Last week I watched them spill the contents of a garbage bin they were allegedly emptying near Mills Hospital. But what's the worry over a bit more garbage and refuse floating around town? Recology certainly doesn't care. After all, it's only dirty, filthy garbage. And yes, their trucks have no disciplined schedule, and are noisy and ubiquitous - and about as anti-ecofriendly as can be. Instead of one truck coming around, like it used to be, Recology makes three rounds to each street! This creates exponentially more emissions, more traffic, and more noise in every neighborhood this incompetent outfit disgraces. How Green of them! Whoopee! Now, as if they couldn't get any worse, one of their offensively incompetent "crews" damaged one of our cars with the Recology truck's robotic arm. No note, no nothing, just a hit-and-run reported to police, rendering them not only incapable but criminal. I could go on with more horror stories, but I won't. Where to begin is the question... So that's great Recology took over for Allied waste, even kept a good portion of their employees, that's nice of you Recology but did you think you could possibly keep the same garbage men on the same routes, or better yet fire the customer service representatives with bad mouth's and horrible ethics? So my boss today asked me to find out why our garbage had been skipped yet again this week. I call Recology and speak with a man, he states that he'll have someone out here as soon as possible. Or as he said ASAP (annoying much) so the garbage men arrive but don't pick up the recycling. Here goes another call over to Recology, I speak with "Jonay" who with an attitude tells me I don't have recycling service, that I have to request it. Really? You've had no problem picking it up previous weeks - just today you have an issue? She then gets an attitude with me, were talking full on "naw y'all don't know, you probably took that bin from another property" So that's fine, she then asks me what size it is I say I don't know, its the largest bin I've seen. She laughed no joke full on laughed and said "you don't know the size of your bin" my answer was simple "its not my job to know the size of the bins its yours and whats it matter its full and needs to be picked up and laughing at me about it wont change the fact that it needs to be picked up" she then proceeds to tell me it will have to wait until next week - nope unacceptable - let me speak to your supervisor. Then she giggles again. (Getting annoyed as it is) She comes back after 5 minutes of being on hold (dead air hold, give me some music at least Recology) and says "we ain't got a supervisor everyone gone" I then ask to speak to the supervisors supervisor she laughed again WTF are you kidding me, either you're stoned and don't know how to do your job and laugh because you're nervous or you're just that freaking horrible at customer service and don't know how to be polite and figure being union and laughing over the phone is acceptable. So anyway I'm livid at this point she puts me on hold again and then finally I get a supervisor at least that's what he told me he was "Raymond" proceeds to tell me he'll get someone out here either today or tomorrow and that he doesn't have a straight schedule for recycle pick up and to just leave it outside and it should be picked up Monday - Wednesday. (Again not acceptable) I asked him if it was OK for his employees to laugh at a customer he says no, obvious answer right? He asked what happened, and I explained everything in detail. Like it matters right, I'm sure they had a nice little laugh about me after I hung up. But what gets me is this, they send out the garbage truck to our business AGAIN! Not the recycle truck, granted it needed to just go I told them to dump the crap on the truck. They then tell me it needs to go into the recycle truck, look I don't care where it goes it just needs to go you can sort it at the facility - they no longer sort hence the 3 damn garbage cans, to think I thought they wanted us to be "green" no they laid people off so we could do the sorting! Whatever just take the damn cardboard throw it on your truck and lets not care either way, because I refuse to wait for yet again another truck to possibly show up today or tomorrow. Thankfully the garbage man agreed with me and took it with him. I am sorry Recology, but there is a lot of fixing that needs to be done within San Mateo county. Get your routes right, your schedules organized and most importantly hire a customer service department that is knowledgeable and courteous to your customers. Not like we have much of a choice but to continue to use you but at least make us feel as if we do. read more

Recology has actually gotten better over the years. They still leave stuff in the cans, but for the most part, it gets collected. I also love that they collect compost and recycling every week. It makes me wonder how we managed to only do recycling every other week. read more

We just moved to a new house and I called them on Monday to start my service. Wednesday morning they were at my door, took the garbage and recycle and gave us brand new bins. They also took all the boxes (about 50) we used for the move at no charge. The lady I talked to on the phone was super nice and helpful. read more

came here for recology day and for garbage day. they have tents set up and tours given. normally tours are only on week days but since these are special events they were given on saturdays. smelly place but hey its garbage! the tour was actually really informative. just to see all the tons of garbage and recycling and compost they get daily. its cray! and then you get to see the education building which is fun. they do field trips for elementary schools. all the workers were nice and friendly. they do free e waste and other waste that you can dump which is amazing. now i know where to dump all my big wastes. open monday to saturday so it makes it easy to come anytime. read more

Why write a review for a garbage service? Because recently I was amazed by their customer service. I called to complain that the daily pick up at our apartment building was too early (530am) and too loud and woke us up consistently. I wasn't sure if they could change it but they did .. Worst service I have ever dealt with. They don't come when they are scheduled, the drivers are extremely rude and they out trash dumpster in the middle of the parking lot all the time. You can call and let them know about any issues but nothing Will be done about it. Super disappointed that the make recycling and disposing so difficult. It's amazing that you could get the recycling emptied weather it was in the old Allied/Waste bins or the new Recology. Now Recology won't empty the same bins they emptied before unless you use there bins and with additional charges. I had 4 green bins (three bought from Allied/Waste and one from Recology), and they emptied all of them at the same cost on the recycling, now Recology only will empty the one that says Recology on it. You need another bin, additional cost; another bin, additional cost....AND they want to raise your rates again??? For what, service....Bull Shirt!!! read more

I've had a good chuckle reading some of the reviews of Recology services. Truly, most of the complaints I've read are first-world problems. Yes, three trucks come down my street every Friday morning between 5:30 and 7:00. I'm grateful for their service, even if I'm awakened by squeaky brakes. I'm equally as grateful for the twice-yearly pickup of additional items outside those accepted weekly by Recology. If I can't schedule a pickup in December, I rest assured knowing I have ELEVEN other months in a calendar year to do so. But my favorite complaint was about having to wait up to thirty minutes in line for compost. Imagine having to wait that long for FREE compost. I'm so grateful to the wonderful drives who collect my waste and recycling, that I tape gift cards to the bins during the December holidays. Thank you, Recology for excellent service! read more

If you thought Allied Waste was bad, think again. Recology is terrible. They took over SM County's garbage and recycling service since Jan. 1, 2011 (they had 3 months previous to get familiar with everything) I've been on the phone with this company EVERY business day since Jan. 3rd, 2011. They have the same few excuses every time, for not picking up the garbage. "The driver doesn't have the key," "These are new drivers and they don't know their routes well yet," "You didn't pull your bins out to the curb." They always have an excuse, but it changes all the time, and most of the time, it's not even the case. I have been calling for our residential and commercial accounts, mostly Condo complexes, apartment buildings and/or restaurant. Why do I need to call them every single time they miss a pick up? Why is it that they couldn't call us (whose name is on the account) and ask for a key, or ask where the bins are, or let us know what is going on? Now they're charging an extra fee for any bins that are further than 50 ft away from the curb. Whatever...JUST PICK UP THE FREAKIN GARBAGE and get it together people. read more

I'm really, really frustrated with Recology. They opened a new account for my unit and started billing. I already share cans with neighbor so I called them right away to make sure the account is combined so we can continue sharing. They told me we could only share if we got giant 64 gallon bins (due to very understandable minimum service requirements). We don't have any space for these and take them up and down stairs, so I begged for 32 gallons. No dice. I contacted DPH and Dept. of Env. to make my case. After alot of back and forth, they got Recology to agree to the arrangement we've had in place for years (though they made us switch out the billing address because they 'only' bill to the lower address number for combined accounts). In the time it took to sort all this out, I've racked up a $200 bill for garbage service we never used, never asked for, and tried to close right away. It took months to get to the solution and in the interim cost me $200. So far, they refuse to waive that charge. I got different answers from different customer service workers. The last one was very rude and kept talking in circles. When I told her the other person had given me a completely different answer months ago, she accused me of lying. This was a really frustrating experience! Dear Recology: -Get your minimum bin requirements straight, and aligned with the realities of small dwelling units. -Ditch that annoying 'we only bill to lowest address on joint accounts' rule. It makes no sense to consumers. -Work on your customer service line -- it is bad. read more
