Love this store. I was a regular customer when it was located in Hillcrest and spent many an hour browsing the record selection. Most of my record collection was from Record City. I also always enjoyed a healthy banter with Graham. Cannot recommend it enough. I was sad to see it move from Hillcrest, but I'm happy it's found a new home and continues to thrive. Really quaint small locally owned record store in Downtown San Diego. CD's (relics) are up front and most of the vinyl is in the back. The prices on used records are very fair and new records are a bit pricier. I found some gems in the Oldies section and the owner was really fun to talk to. Bought a super cool Stray Cats band shirt here, so many awesome bands to choose from, nice quality shirt for 12 bucks! They also have discounts if you bring your military ID. Everything is here that you could possibly want. Every genre of music. Vinyl and cds were here. Friendly, knowledgeable staff that will order what you want if it somehow is not at the store. I could hear the employees helping out and giving customers info and I was impressed. Highly recommend. There is parking at Rite Aid, we did 12 for two hours. Under the best of times its not a particularly clean or well ventilated place, but who cares, its records and CDs, unless you have a dust allergy. But, ffs, we are, as of December 20, in the middle of a raging new Covid Virus variant, Omicron. Regularly scheduled surgeries are postponed. ER workers are exhausted and risking there lives. Etc. Went in other day, its winter. Door is closed. The place smells like mildew. Its very poorly ventilated, no evidence of any ventilation at all.... And the store is full of unmasked customers, and Graham, the manager, behind the counter, who spits when he gets excited, is not wearing a mask. What's wrong with these people. Dont get vaccinated. ok. But not wearing a mask? Would you be ok if your brain surgeon cut you open no mask. There is no such thing as "mask liberation" That's just self centered entitlement and ignorance. Regardless, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) is requiring masks to be worn in all indoor public settings, irrespective of vaccine status, for the next four weeks (December 15, 2021 through January 15, 2022). So its the law. You dont get to take a poo on the sidewalk like a dog, you DO have to pick up after your dog, you DONT get to drive whaever speed you like. you DO have to stop at red lights, you DO currently have to wear a mask, like it or not...So why cherry pick THIS RULE, wearing a mask. Part of being a grown up, even a child, is that you do have follow some rules. Grow up read more

A very fun place to be and even though it's been around for 23 years, it still seems fresh and in great shape...along with the CD's, DVD's, old records, etc...What impressed me the most was the relaxed atmosphere of the store, along with the calm and kind owner, "Graham." I was at another store with DVD's and other "collectibles" in Hillcrest and found it to be just the opposite.{I don't write about what/who I don't like in YELP, as my mother taught me early in life, "if you don't have something nice to say, don't say it!" - So I will finish my review on Record City with a few other positive features. If you want to be shamed or made fun of for wearing a mask by employees and customers, this is the place! Three other customers, besides me, were wearing masks. I have no problem with people not wearing a mask, but don't talk crap around me about wearing masks! Apparently, we were the subject of ridicule and ire. I guess those who consider safety are part of the "conspiracy." Good selection but I couldn't continue listening to the nonsense and the topic of conversation obviously geared toward us mask-wearers. Great customer service. On Tuesday I called multiple record shops looking for Peter Frampton albums because I had a last minute opportunity to meet him and have him sign some items on Wednesday and my Frampton album covers have not aged well! Nobody had even one album available, or so they said over the phone. Then I reached Graham at Record City, who almost immediately confirmed he had a Copy of I'm In You. Unfortunately my work hours and their business hours were at odds, so it looked like I was SOL (no fault of Record City). On Wednesday afternoon, I found a way to get to Record City on my way to the Frampton concert and called to see if the album from the previous day was still available? Not only was it, even though I had said I couldn't make it in, Graham still took it upon himself to keep looking and found a copy of Frampton Comes Alive for me as well and they were waiting for me! 2 albums available when no one else had any! I was ecstatic and as I paid, I gave Graham a $5 tip which he refused, multiple times! No need, he was "just doing my job." I don't buy much vinyl anymore, but Record City will be my go to whenever I do and I suggest you make them yours too. read more

I spent my last day in San Diego 2018 visiting record stores I saw on Yelp. One was in Mission Hills called M-Theory and I wanted to visit Record City in Hillcrest. Record City is near University on Sixth Ave near Robinson. This part of Hillcrest is a little more funky and hipster. I really liked Record City. I had fun browsing the shop. I decided to buy Ryan Adams Gold Limited Edition on vinyl for like $16 or so. Some of the records are overpriced, but they have a serious selection that I would browse again in SD. In my brief, four day stay in San Diego, I was able to visit three record stores. This place is hands down the best one I found in San Diego, and one of THE best record stores I've been to anywhere. They have a huge variety of dollar albums - all wonderful titles and in good condition (I think that many of those in the dollar bin would retail for more in other stores). In addition to the dollar albums, this record store has an excellent selection of all genres; I was able to find several titles that I've been seeking for a long time. I know that selection can change daily and it's a matter of luck to find what one is looking for, but I was extremely successful at this store. More important is the pricing. I did not find many titles for more than $6 or $8 most prices ranged from $3-$5. It was refreshing to see reasonable prices for the albums that I want to buy. I purchase vinyl to play and enjoy - not as expensive museum pieces. And to top it off, if I remember correctly, buying more than 5 albums at $4 or more, lowered the price of each album by a dollar - making a good bargain even better. So in short, this place is in a great location, has a fabulous, quality selection, and reasonable (to rock bottom) prices...not to mention a friendly, knowledgeable staff. I hope to visit again on my next trip and will definitely leave more room in my suitcase to haul back my new-found treasures. read more

My wife got a record player for Christmas so we decided to grab a few vinyl records to check it out. I spun up the old Yelp reviewer and Record City had amazing reviews and was close to our house. We headed out. Record City was a reminder of walking through record stores in the olden days. Everything was very well organized throughout. It was super easy to navigate the different sections and find what we were looking for. The staff was amazing. Super knowledgeable (as the long time record store folks are) and were obvious fans of music. It was refreshing to go into a place where the folks in the store were obviously there because they loved it. It makes a huge difference. We will return over and over. read more

Pro: - good mix of used and new; more newer vinyl that I noticed. - staff was friendly and answered questions with great energy and customer service acumen. - store is organized like I was digging at a record fair, so easy to navigate/search for novice collector & pro alike. - priced well: I didn't see anything that made me pause or question their pricing thought process(es). Con: - solid but not massively sized inventory - parking nearby is a challenge..try finding a meter a few blocks away vs. paying $4 per hour in the lots nearby Glad I stopped by.
