Easily one of my favorite restaurants. I'm born and raised in Aptos and though haven't lived in the area for 10 years, I eat at red apple every time I'm home to visit my parents. Literally hundreds and hundreds of meals we've ate at the restaurant and take out. My favorite always used to be the bacon waffle, but also enjoy the breakfast potato dishes. Love this place!! I bring my two girls in and I'm always greeted with a friendly smile and the girls are begging me for Hot Chocolates which our waitress always brings them in a dash. I love the Benedict's and the special board is always a treat to explore. The ever changing muffins are refreshing and I don't mind a Mimosa on a Sunday out in the patio on a sunny day. Pleasantly surprised with how dog friendly this restaurant was! Most places say "dog friendly", but really don't cater to anything other than small lap dogs. I was able to bring my big 70lb dog as well as my little 20lb dog and there was enough space for both of them outside (comfortably). Everyone was very dog friendly, from the customers to the staff! I gave this a one for lack of accommodation , I had ordered a takeout 14.00 salad. Received a call my appt was running behind by 20 min. So i decided to take a seat at outdoor dining it was completely empty except for one another table. Server came up and asked me to leave that it was policy for customers not to eat in to go containers at their out door seating. She didnt even offer to ask me if i would like to have it plated. I was so offended i lost my appetite and threw the salad out. Wont be going back there again . I would totally have understood if i had brought food to their area from another restaurant but it was from their own establishment!! read more

I have been here before years ago but it definitely has went down hill. Service is very slow, even when it's not crowded. They sat us outside and forgot about us. We had to get our own menus. Food took 30 mins to get. It was dried, messy, and over cooked. They do not let you bring in coffee. Literally take it from you off your table! They do not have that posted anywhere! One our favorite local spots that we do our best to patronize during the Pandemic.However, after three consecutive meals where our server forgot us, never came back with coffee, water, a napkin....After chasing our server down to hand him the credit card to pay the check that took over 15 minutes to come, my husband sat at the table for close to another 20 minutes for him to return to pick it up. Never once did any staff come by our table after our order was finally taken and our meal served cold. My family wanted to grab food to go for Mother's Day and we decided to call in to order. Unfortunately we were informed they were not taking to go orders over the phone at that time. We understood, and decided to try another service like doordash. Again un available. We decide to call again and ask if we can come in, order in person, and make a to go order. We were told that this was fine to do. So my father and I went. He went up and came back frustrated. He let me know that in the front they had a sign that read to go orders one way and dine in the other. My dad goes to place the to go order and was told he cannot do this. Naturally upset, my dad asked to speak to the manager. The person in the front she was the owner and gave him attitude and started acting disrespectful towards him. The owner of red apple should know better and at the least awknowledge that there was clear miscommunication by her employees here, or if it was her taking the phone that day. I understand that it can be a busy day, but i did also see others leaving with to go orders from where I was parked. It saddens me to say but I think prejudice was involved here, we will not be coming back here again. read more

Potato Pot was good! Service was terrible. Visiting my mother and thought I'd take her out to breakfast. We were the first table sat in the second dining room. Ordered waters and a cappuccino (but was notified the cap machine may be down so he'd double check!). Waiter came back with waters and we ordered. Never saw a cappuccino or an offering for just a cup of coffee. The third and last time we saw our possible waiter was when the food was dropped off and he realized we didn't have silverware. He said he'd be right back! We sat there for a few minutes before I got up to ask another server behind the coffee bar about some utensils (food was getting cold!). We patiently waited for that second server because it seemed like a dishwasher had brought back a clean rack of utensils. The table next to us (keep in mind seated way after us because we were the first table in that dining room) ended up giving us their silverware. Even if it was a mishap that there was no clean silverware please notify us customers snd take our food back to be warmed! Bare minimum instead of sitting there for 5 minutes (no exaggeration on the time). After finally starting to eat, I wanted some ketchup so I walked over to where they stored it because heaven forbid someone check in on us and ask if "food is all good" and "if we needed anything". Finally a 3rd server stepped over to check in right when I was about to get up and grab the hot sauce. She was able to bring that over to us- thanks! Also keep in mind we haven't seen that first server since he disappeared to "get us some silverware"... Peering at the 4 other tables seated next to us (reminder: seated after us) with coffees, cappuccinos (yes saw a fresh one get delivered), utensils, water refills, I couldn't help but think we were possibly just forgotten about. Wanted a to-go box but we knew that would probably take forever so my mom walked down to the car, got a container, put leftovers in the container, and we left after I put some cash on the table. Never saw anyone after the hot sauce, never got a check (I just looked up the menu ONLINE and calculated food tax and tip). Whether a management oversight for opening when not having enough serving staff (even though all the tables around seemed just fine!) or a lack of awareness from servers, TOUGH experience. If you took the time to read this I would suggest getting take out or driving up the road elsewhere. I was a waitress for 4 years so I really tried to cut them slack everywhere but there comes a tipping point where no excuses are really acceptable. :/ read more

I love the food here. But... being on a KETO diet we don't eat potatoes or bread. So we ordered vegetables instead of potatoes and received a delicious meal... one day. On another day we were told it would cost extra for veggies even though I'd been served them a few days earlier. So I looked on the menu and they weren't listed. Was told they cost $3.50. A side of potatoes is $4.25 so I didn't understand why it cost more for veggies. I was a little upset when another employee came over and told us they weren't making anything special for us and veggies would be served on a separate plate. Before the conversation devolved further we just left. The good news is that our favorite restaurant in SC county was still open (California Grill) and they own Lakeside Organic Farms and are more than happy to sub veggies for potatoes. They also have the best salads in town and are really friendly. Anyway, if you're tired of pretentious Aptos restaurants, give California Grill a try for breakfast or dinner. They are excellent! While our food was really good, I was not as happy with the service. As a former server myself, I understand that when you get busy, customers just have to be patient. During our short stay in Aptos, we discovered this cafe. The menu was detailed and indicated the most popular items. My walnut apricot pancakes were outstanding; the coffee was great. My wife & i decided to come back the next morning for another great breakfast. My own built "Spanish" omelet was a great success! The service was friendly, attentive and smiling. This is one of my regular breakfast spots because of the reliability and consistency of good food. Red Apple has an extensive breakfast and lunch menu, plus daily specials. Their prices are reasonable. The staff is great. Everyone is welcoming and friendly. Service is good....never have to wait long or feel rushed. The place is clean. They are located on the second level of a shopping center. There is always lots of parking. Tip: drive behind Bank of America where there is a parking lot that is not used much. There's are stairs behind the bank that lead to Red Apple. Also, there is a dog friendly patio. Enjoy! read more

The location and outdoor eating area are great. I also thought the service we had was also great, no problems. There were three of us and we ordered a variety of things to really "vet" this place vs other breakfast/lunch places in the greater area. Sorry but none of the food was that good. The menu is extensive but everything we ordered ended up being mediocre. Omelet, biscuits/gravy, a Benedict and a sandwich and pancakes. Pretty much every breakfast/lunch place I've been to over the years does all of these dishes far better. I might still go back if roped into it but it would t be my first choice. Bathroom situation - only 1 bathroom for entire restaurant; we were asked to not stand by the door but at the front-people would walk in before we could get in. Child's PBJ on sour dough bread with French fries and dill pickle slice-not a winner. Cheese blintz looked like 2 pancakes with cheese spread in between not the nice folded blintz I was expecting. The very last time our waitress was annoyed the whole time and then just left on her break mid breakfast with no replacement. The other waitresses seemed annoyed when we asked for things and basically said it wasn't there table. We had a fairly large group with people from out of town. I just went to Red Apple to get brunch with friends on my birthday. I've been there before and never had an issue. But this time I was with a large group and about half the people present were Indian. I was super disappointed to witness the casual racism that the staff displayed to my friends. When the wait staff came to take our orders, one of my friends wasn't present as she had left to go to the bathroom. We told the waitress to come back to take her order too. She told us yes, then didn't return for a while. When we saw her walk by we tried to call her over/flag her down. Seeing another one of my Indian friends try to call her over, our waitress rudely said "yeah, I'll get to you" in a very blunt voice before going over and helping another white customer first. When it came time for the check, my friend put her card into the case and we waited for someone to come by to pick it up. No wait staff ever came to collect it, so since it had been such a long time one of my friends went up to the front to pay at the register. We remained there waiting for the card to be returned. Our waitress then came up and asked us to leave because they needed the space for other customers. Yes red Apple gets crowded and having worked food service I understand the need to turn tables over. But our card had not been returned. We explained that we were still waiting for it. She told us she'd check on it. Then within less than 5 minutes, 3 different waitstaff came up to our table to ask us to leave. Each time we repeated that we couldn't leave until the credit card was returned and we were waiting for the payment to be completed. Finally the waitress came back and told us very rudely, "ok your card was processed, now go." It was so abrupt and odd and I've never experienced this when I've been here before as a white person with other white people. It appeared that they just wanted our group gone as soon as possible and couldn't even be bothered to carry out the service that they should (like collecting your check in the first place, basic customer service etc.) It was pretty clear that my Indian friends were being treated differently. I've worked food service before and I've had busy stressful days in restaurants but I still never had the gall to treat customers like this. It was unfortunate, embarrassing, and sad that my friends visiting my hometown had to see this showcase of the peak white neoliberal place Santa Cruz is. I asked for a grilled cheese sandwich but subbed swiss for cheddar and added sautéed mushrooms, tomato and avocado. Delish.
