To this day I still can't understand why otherwise sane individuals rave about this restaurant. To begin, the food is mediocre at best. And quite frankly, that's a rather generous appraisal. With so many fantastic restaurants moving into town, the Red Arrow not only feels outdated, it tastes outdated. Service is certainly acceptable, not once in all my years have I ever experienced bad service. That's really quite something, considering the volume they do on a regular basis, not to mention the hours they operate and the clientele they serve, this is actually rather impressive. But this isn't a restaurant I'd go to with the intention of proposing to my SO, nor one I'd have any intention of spending a relaxing evening in. So the service is, quite frankly, not all that important, despite being appreciated. All in all, it's the Airport Diner with slightly more history and nostalgic value, and barely improved food. Very sad to have to update this with negative reviews. They recently updated their menu, and across the board the prices went from very reasonable to outrageous. They also have added charges for splitting plates, and only allow 2 refills on coffee. What diner doesn't have unlimited coffee? Back in 2008, I watched an episode of Diners, Drive Ins and Dives on Food Network and became intrigued by their Dinah Fingers, aka homemade Twinkies. Fast forward four years later: Hostess is now in baked goods heaven (RIP) and my craving for those Dinah Fingers have steadily grown over time. This time, my boyfriend and I live in North Jersey, almost 275 miles away and a five hour drive. So, we made a trip out of New Hampshire for the New Years long weekend and our first stop was - you guessed it - Red Arrow. New Jersey certainly has its lion's share of 24 hour diners, but Red Arrow is not just special for the homemade Twinkies; it has New England small town charm as well. A true establishment, they offer a huge variety of entrees to pick from, with some diner favorites dating back to the 1920s. They serve tasty comfort food at great prices. Even their coffee mugs are adorable! What is there not to like? By the way, the Dinah Fingers were just as good as I remembered them: almost identical to the original Twinkie with a slightly more lemony cake, and without 67475474867 less preservatives to boot! On a quest to try diners and The Red Arrow landed on our list and was recommended by a friend. We (a friend and I) arrived around 2:45 p on a Friday afternoon and it was fairly quiet. We were greeted by a very friendly host and seated immediately. it took us a while to decide what we would order because the menu is very expansive. My friend ordered the grilled cajun shrimp over a bed of spinach and sauteed tomatoes and onions and I ordered the grilled haddock sandwich on toasted sourdough and fries. Our meals came rather quickly and both were very generous portions. The shrimp appeared to be "local" as they were small but tasted fresh; however, very spicy, even for my friend who likes spicy food. The spinach and sauteed veggies were helpful in neutralizing the spice. My haddock came with lettuce but had a lot of tartar already on it, I would have preferred a little less tartar. The haddock did not taste "fresh", rather frozen as it was slightly fishy but not horrible. The fries were meaty, hot and tasty. We couldn't visit a diner without considering dessert so we shared the blueberry/lemon cream pie. The pie was delicious, not too sweet and a good mix of blueberry and lemon filling. The crust was also very good! Total tab (with tap water as our drink) was about $28 without tip. Our waitress was lovely, very friendly. The only odd thing about our experience was the trip to the bathroom which is one "unit" in the kitchen ... literally in the kitchen. M and I were driving home from the Upper Valley past midnight, thinking about how little food we had in the fridge at home, when I remembered seeing something on the Food Network about The Red Arrow, a 24 hour diner in Manch. A few clicks of the smartphone later, we were confirmed and on our way! The food was better than I expected. I had one of the specials-- essentially a breakfast burrito but they called it a roll-up or something. They had to make it twice because the note "no bacon" doesn't mean anything to the kitchen, but it was worth the wait. That plus the hash browns and a big glass of chocolate milk was a perfect 1am meal. The waitresses have a bit of an attitude which adds to the charm but gets annoying quickly.
