I rarely leave anything less than a 5-star review, but I am being generous to give Union diner a 3-star review today, unfortunately. I don't know if our server was new, or if they were understaffed. I also don't know if the cook was new. At the end, I will tell you why I won't eat there again. Let's start with after we were seated it took a good 5 minutes or more before our server showed up. We almost left, but we had gone to El Tequila first only to learn that they are out of business. Darn! (We loved El Tequila! Tell me if you know, if they left the area or what). I should have known not to eat my food when the server thought I had ordered coke though I ordered lemonade! I have never had anyone ever confuse those! I ordered a Mexican omelet and hash browns (because I was really in the mood for Mexican food)! The omelet was good, but there was no seasoning in the ground beef, certainly not taco meat by any stretch of the imagination! I used all my sour cream (which had a lot of water in the container--does sour cream spoil?). And I used all my salsa. It was the only way I could even get an inkling of Mexican flavor. The hash browns were dripping with oil, so I onky had a couple bites of them. Sad! I drank about half my lemonade and asked for a To Go cup, but that never showed up. I waited as long as I could because the cramping started and I told my daughter, "We gotta get home." (I had the runs!) So, no, we won't be going back to Union diner again. Later I remembered this happened to me once before after eating there, but I had blamed it on the eggs. I think now, it must be the oil they use or something. read more

This place is just like the diner we go to at home and they treated us like regulars so we went both days we were there. Really clean, friendly, quick service, and the breakfasts were great! I visited this diner with 3 friends for brunch on Thursday. There was a sign that said to seat yourself so we found a booth. It was fairly empty, probably since it was a weekday. I ordered the stuffed french toast with strawberries. It comes with cream cheese filling and cooked down strawberries (which makes them more jammy and syrupy and sweet), and it's topped with loads of whipped cream and comes with maple syrup on the side. It was very sweet, as expected, but very delicious. I would recommend getting a side of bacon or hash browns or something else that's savory to cut the sweetness... I made the mistake of not ordering any but my friend graciously shared a slice of bacon which helped me a lot. I think this would be a hit for kids or anyone with a major sweet tooth! I think the quality and taste of the food is pretty standard for any respectable diner. The price is also cheap and you get a good amount of food for what you're paying. Overall I'd highly recommend coming here for breakfast/brunch! Unfortunately I was only stopping by the area so I don't know if I'll ever visit again to try their non-breakfast options but I'm sure they're just as yummy and affordable! read more

Looking for a hearty breakfast while in Laconia for a wedding, and found this place on Yelp. The staff were welcoming, the seating comfortable, and the food! I had the best sausage patty I've had in a decade, and how they can make a Thomas English muffin taste better than I make at home (same brand) is beyond me. The waitress was wearing a "Buy Local or Bye Local" t-shirt, and as a dedicated believer in that principle, I had to buy two. If I could give more than five stars, I absolutely would. read more

I have been here twice in the past two weeks. The first time had the fried whole clams which were remarkably delicious. Served with green beans cooked with onions which made them uncommonly good. The mashed potatos were good also. There was enough food to take home enough for my lunch the next day The service was very quick and the wait person was very friendly . The ambiance is authentic old street car diner. What more can you want. This is the descendant of the old Paugus Bay Dinner which left us years ago. This place is everything they say it is. The oldest restaurant or one of the oldest restaurants in America and the atmosphere is incredible. The oysters are to die for. Sit at the oyster bar. It only seats like eight people so you'll have to wait but the experience is 10 times better than sitting at the table. read more

We visited the Union Diner for a late brunch on Saturday. We arrived around noon. They're open until 2pm, so we were on the "late" side as far as a rush/busy time of day. We both ordered breakfast. She had pancakes, home fries, bacon/sausage and scrambled eggs. I had French toast, hash browns, bacon/sausage and poached eggs. The food came out quickly, and was still hot. Her review: banana pancakes were decent when eaten alone. Between bites of other food, the pancakes had a less-good taste. Sausage and bacon were both good. Eggs done well, and home fries we're on the light side as far as doneness. They were pretty plain but ok. She also loved the chocolate milk lol!! My review: the French toast was so so good! I opted for "real" NH syrup which is my absolute fav, and it came with a generous amount for the price. The poached eggs were a little underdone but I'd rather that than too cooked. Bacon was too done and almost inedible. Sausage was GREAT! The service was incredible. There were so many team members there, and they worked together to provide exceptional service and attention. We planned a return trip while still in the restaurant which is a good sign. We want to try during peak early breakfast time to see if the bacon, etc. is fresher and better. This review is based on dinner. The Union Diner (formerly Paugus Diner) is housed in an old fashioned 1951 Worcester lunch car (#831) serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner, the typical American diner fare. This dining car was originally Manus' Diner in Concord before suffering fire and moving around several times before moving to its present location in Laconia. The Union Diner has been under new management for one year. The main portion of this classic diner (restored) has a long lunch counter with stools and booths along the front windows and ceramic tiles. The back kitchen area and an additional dining room (completed in 1994) are attached to the original diner. The place has several TVs in both dining areas and the attached dining room was recently decorated with classic pictures and old 45 records on the walls. The breakfast menu offers plenty of egg dishes, 3 egg omelettes, breakfast sandwiches, pancakes, waffles, French toast, candy counter cakes, and breakfast sides. Egg Beaters are available. The lunch & dinner menu offerings include hot & cold sandwiches, salads, soups, burgers, hot dogs, chicken & seafood baskets, comfort dishes (meatloaf, turkey dinner, tips, pot roast, pork pie, chicken fried steak, pasta & meatballs), and desserts. The prices here are reasonable, most dishes under $10. Coke fountain drinks served. Specials are also offered. They had Chicken Pot Pie on special when I was here. I stopped in here recently for dinner and sat up at the counter. I started out with an ice water to cool off and ordered the Apricot Glazed Grilled Chicken Dinner ($7.29) served with potato, vegetable, and roll. The hot roll was brought out first, which was pretty good with a soft dense texture and a sweet taste. The entree was ready in 12 minutes. The food was pretty decent. The thin piece grilled chicken was tender, not too stringy, and had a sweet glaze on the outside. The mashed potatoes and asparagus seemed to be reheated though. The mashed potatoes were homemade, very chunky and dense topped with a hearty brown gravy. The asparagus was a good side to go along with the meal. I finished most of the food, but I boxed up the mashed potatoes for later, which was very filling to eat. The service was friendly and attentive and the owner was working with the staff. Solid diner fare and my favorite one in the general area. It's a cute albeit a tad run down lunch car. But I liked the look and feel of the place. Relaxed, local people just grabbing a bite. All the staff are extremely friendly, made my friend and I feel comfortable which is the most important to me! I honestly wish we had more time to sit and just drink coffee (even though the coffee wasn't that great). We got breakfast and they do their omelettes really well! Perfectly cooked and fluffy eggs with melty cheese and fresh veggies? I'm happy. Potatoes were nothing to talk about, but I did enjoy how they puzzle together the toast into a.. hexagon? I dig it a lot. It was cheap, not too greasy and it hit the spot. I needed to leave a review to thank everyone for such warm hospitality and great service. You can find plenty of decent restaurants with good food (including this one) but their service just puts it over the top. My party of 8 called on a Sunday morning to ask for accommodation in which they immediately told us they would ensure that they would hold a table for us even though we didn't ask. We arrived maybe 5 minutes later and found the table for 8 ready with a 'Reserved' sign on it which was really nice. All the waitresses that helped us through our breakfast meal were so nice about asking us if we needed anything, getting us extra condiments more than once, and refilling our coffees (and doing all of this with such a good attitude and politeness). They did mistakenly mess up one of the orders and two of the plates came out a bit later than the others but they were so quick to want to remedy the situation and apologize. They did take the two meals off the bill which wasn't necessary but goes to show how they go the extra mile to make sure you had a good experience on top of eating good food. We all left in such a pleasant mood and would definitely recommend this place. read more
