Service was super friendly and quick, Rico at the bar, hope I spelled that right, hooked us up right away. It probably helped by the fact that it was daytime so not at all crowded. Dive bar vibes for sure, but it's bigger than I would expect for a dive. Tons of games like pool, darts, pinball, and even a beer pong machine for two players, never seen that before, but surprisingly fun. Machines were about a dollar a game, so nothing crazy. Street parking was free for a couple hours where I was and there's indoor and outdoor seating. Women's bathroom had some hilarious messages and divorce dad music playing constantly. I liked it, my mom, not so much. I'd definitely go back if I'm in the area and want a to just chill and drink.

I drank my margarita very fast, paid, and left as fast as I could, since I literally couldn't breathe. I thought all bars/restaurants are nonsmoking in Florida, but I was wrong...The bar tender didn't wash his hands after smoking and making more drinks. When I head back to the area, I'll be drinking at the Thirsty Turtle, that is nonsmoking.

However, my experience on Wednesday was completely unacceptable. When I walked in and stood at the bar, there was a white female bartender and a Hispanic male bartender working. The female bartender made no effort whatsoever to acknowledge my presence. She did not greet me, ask if I needed anything, or even make eye contact. Instead, she simply moved to another register and ignored me entirely. The only reason I was eventually served was because the Hispanic male bartender noticed me, because he came in, greeted me, and promptly took my drink order. He was professional, attentive, and the only bright spot of an otherwise terrible experience. As a patron staying at the hotel next door and someone who has spent money at this establishment multiple times this week, I find this level of service unacceptable. There are plenty of bars in the area with staff who understand basic customer service and know how to treat guests with respect. I don't know the name of the female bartender who ignored me, but based on this experience alone, I would not recommend visiting on Wednesday nights--or any night she is working. Customers deserve to be acknowledged and treated with courtesy, and unfortunately that was not the case tonight.

We were happy to find out that Growler's was right near where we were staying, so we headed over on a Saturday evening during happy hour ($1 off drafts). Happy hour on Saturday? I'm ready to move to Sarasota. The atmosphere inside is nice and casual without being grimy. Even the bathrooms are clean! The bartenders that we had were awesome -- friendly and helpful. We enjoyed a couple of beers and although there was sound background music playing, it wasn't TOO loud to have a conversation, like a lot of bars (at least in Miami). There's no food at Growler's, but the bartender suggested that we order from one of the nearby restaurants and have them bring it over. We ended up leaving to eat, explore a bit, and then return to Growler's later that night for some live music. However, we did see some people order food and the restaurant nextdoor walked the food right over. Around 9 or so, a couple of bands started playing. It seems like a pretty cool place where new artists can get a start. One of the women who played said it was her first show ever. The bands were pretty good and the bar started to fill up as the night progressed. If we return to Sarasota, we'll hit Growler's up again for a laid back night.
