My coworker once told me his brother disappeared for a few hours in Annandale and returned saying he had found the holy grail of chicken. This is that place. I first came here last summer since I was on a Korean fried/seasoned chicken kick and I was just looking up places. It's a cute little place - definitely reminds me of smaller restaurants I see in Korean dramas and movies. I haven't been to many other Korean chicken places but this place is amazing. We got the sweet and spicy chicken and it does not skimp on spices. You can also smell the fragrant cinnamon as it comes to the table and it's just delicious. The tteokbokki is some of the softest/chewiest I've had. Again, spicier than some other places, but so good. We got that with the kimbap combo. It was a TON of chicken (at least for 2 people) and we wanted to finish the tteokbokki there since it'd get hard on the way home. I like this place. The type of food is Korean style street food so I don't expect it to be anything fabulous. The prices are reasonable and you get seated quickly. I had a groupon so I got 2 salads, one fried dumpling order and one fried chicken dish. I ordered an additional kimbap on the side too. The salads and fried dumplings came out quickly and then the kimbap was next. The kimbap was alright. It's big on size but taste it was okay. I got the soy sauce fried chicken and it was alright as well. I felt like the chicken was a little bland, but the portion was big. I think I could have done without the kimbap. Since s/o and I were craving soondae, we decided to come here with a bunch of his friends as a sort of mini reunion. this establishment DOES take reservations so call ahead of time if you're coming in with a big group. They said us in the back and it was like a private room. they were more than accommodating when we had to push back our reservation from 7pm to 7:30pm, props to them (: among all of us we got the holic sampler, regular fried chicken, soy sauce chicken, tonkatsu, and dumplings. the sampler consisted of some sort of salad in the middle (part spicy, part mayonnaise- WHY), kimbap, soondae, fried tempura, and dukbokki. The dukbokki was fantastic, good heat, pretty spicy if you ask me but I have low tolerance, the kimbap was not bad either, and it tastes really good if you dip it in the dukbokki sauce. What fell short for me was the soondae, which was what I was really looking forward to. It easily crumbled, making it hard to pick up, and it tasted very mashed and broken up. This restaurant boasts of Korean "street foods." The ambience is bright and cozy. The menu has meals with funniest names. At first glance, it seems a bit pricey. A chicken platter is $17 and other samplers are $13. But the quantity was plenty. We rarely have left over, but we had to ask for a doggy bag. BTW, the chicken wings tasted better at home after they had more time to get marinated. There are other entrees available that aren't considered snack foods. The non-Koreans will need an assistance with the menu because they seemed to be pretty much all in Korean. But there were plenty of non-Korean customers dining. This place is amazing! It will definitely satisfy your Korean food craving. They have this huge platter where you can sample different types of Korean food. The platter is so cheap for what you get. In the platter there is (dukbokki) spicy rice cakes with fish cakes, (soondae) Korean blood sausages, (manndoo) fried dumplings, (kimbab) rice wrapped in seaweed, an assortment of fried food, and a crunchy cabbage salad with two types of sauce. All of the fried food is fried perfectly and has a crispy texture. The kimbab is sooo good too! And tastes even better submerged in the dukbukki sauce. We also got the fried chicken. They have three types of chicken flavors. One is a regular fried chicken that is just breaded and fried. Another on is the one with a sweet and spicy sauce and the last one is with soy sauce. I would recommend getting the one with the sweet and spicy sauce. We got the plain fried chicken and it was missing something, so we asked for the spicy sweet sauce and they charged us $1.00 for the sauce. The sauce was good, but if youre going to pay a dollar for the sauce mine as well get it already on it. The chicken was fried perfectly and the seasoning is perfect. My first time here. I had a craving for ttokboekki so obviously I had to get that and soondae. I thought the ttokboekki was done just right. My hubby found it too soupy/saucy and spicy. We ordered their bay top chicken. We didn't know what bay top was. It's something like a conch that they made into a spicy veggie salad which was really good. The chicken was light and crunchy. The only fail was their white radish side - not sweet not salty not anything it didn't do anything for the dish. We also ordered their stew chicken (mostly or of curiosity). About a 1-1.5: I had this place down on my list for a while, so I was pretty excited to try this place out for an early dinner. They are known to serve up Korean 'street snacks.' The restaurant itself is very very cute - a bright cheery red sign and the interior is decorated with wooden tables, hanging pictures with mini clothespins from guests, and a little new bulletin board area with upcoming events and such. We were seated right away, and the servers were extremely friendly and sweet. We ordered the 'Dduk Ggi Rhee, Twe Ggi Rhee,' which came with ddukboki (spicy rice cake), fried rolls with vermicelli noodles, tempura (imitation crab stick, sweet potato, and squash), and a clumped veggie tempura; the ddukboki was okay, but the rice cake itself wasn't as soft as I expected it to be and the sauce itself seemed to have a slight film to it; also, there weren't that many fishcake slices so I was a little disappointed; the sauce itself had a slight kick to it, but I thought it was just okay in taste; the fried vermicelli noodles rolls and the tempura had the same tempura batter and I wasn't a fan of these as the noodles had a weird aftertaste to them (maybe they were not fresh?). I've always seen this spot and at first was slightly apprehensive because of the positioning of the building. But those are sometimes the hidden treasures. This place wasn't amazing but it was pretty good. The food came out hot as hell though so be prepared to hofhofhfohof while you're eating. The service was swift and they are functioning really smoothly during covid. They have hand sanitizer on the table and everything is served in either a togo container or disposable. They definitely have a mask on policy for their workers and the customers before they are seated. Their sauce for the tonkatsu was decent but a little overpowered by the ttetbokki sauce. Its a good place to get quick korean bites. And its location is convenient if you want ti play pool later or even before hand. They have a wheelchair escalator. I came here after purchasing the Groupon. I came w a party of 4 so we ended up buying two orders of kimbap as well. The kimbap, both tonkotsu and bulgogi, were delicious. I loved the slight sesame flavor of the bulgogi one! The portions were also large and filling. As for the fried chicken, we were able to get half sweet/spicy and half soy since we couldn't decide on what flavor we wanted. Personally, I preferred the soy chicken as I found the skin crunchier and I prefer my chicken not drenched in thick sauce. The chicken was juicy and fresh tasting but not as flavorful as some other Korean fried chicken places. To be fair, I rated this place 3.5 stars. The service was ok, our waiter was awkward at times and made us feel out of place for not being/speaking Korean. Also, my Groupon said we'd be getting 28 dollars worth of food but the chicken options we were able to select from only cost 18-20 dollars... so was each side salad worth about $5 to make up for the rest? Before I go into the details, I want to make one thing clear. Red Holic is a place that only sells Korean junk food (cheap snacks). This isn't a place where you're going to get many side dishes (ban-chan) or Korean BBQ. You're only going to get one side dish and that's yellow pickled raddish. This isn't an exception. This is the norm for a place that serves these kinds of food in Korea. In Korea, the type of customers who would visit a place like this would be middle & high school and college students who want to snack. To categorize and compare this against places that sell mainstream Korean food is a bit unfair. It would be like rating a place that sells hamburgers against steakhouses that serve USDA Prime Filet Mignon. No matter the grade of the hamburger, whether it's organic or Angus, it will never stack up against the filet. My review rating is based on a comparison of a Korean restaurant selling junk food (also known as "boon-shik"). My 5 star rating is not an absolute rating. I understand that those who have not tried this type of food may absolutely hate it. If you compare the dumplings here to the best Chinese dumplings made from scratch at restaurant XYZ, it's not going to hold up. The fried tempura will not be world class either and the taste is going to be very different from the Japanese tempura that most are accustomed to. If someone doesn't like it and gives it a low rating it's perfectly understandable, but in terms of a relative rating (comparing this to similar Korean junk food restaurants), this place is absolutely stellar. I think this place would be a top 3 Korean junk food restaurant on the East Coast. The only one that I've tried that comes close to this is School Zone in Fort Lee, NJ and I can't think of one place in Manhattan that comes close to what I've eaten here. Today, I ate the combination platter that costs $19.99. It comes with: 1. Handmade fried dumplings 2. Kimbab (Korea style maki rolls) 3. Spicy korean rice cakes (Ddukbokgi) 4. Sundae (a korean version of "blood sausage") 5. Fried tempura (korean style) 6. Cabbage with a korean-style thousand island dressing. Every single one of the items conjured up memories of my past when I used to go and snack on these things back when I was in middle and high school in Korea. Surely, some things are different. The quality of ingredients (in particular the oil that was used to fry the tempura and the produce) is significantly better than the quality served back in Korea and Red Holic doesn't use as much MSG so it's technically not the same. However, it's just remarkable to see that every single one of items on this combination platter hits a 4* or above in my books. I've seen some restaurants make 1-2 of these dishes really well but to hit the mark on all the items on this combination platter? That's really rare. And to make things better, considering that this dish is for 2 that makes it $9.99 a person. If you wanted to order all of these separately, you'll be paying a total of $40-$50+ for this in NY. In my opinion, this is an absolute bargain. If you're a bit curious and adventurous and are willing to try non-standard Korean food I strongly suggest you give it a shot. For the Koreans who crave this kind of food, I urge you to go. If you don't try this out, you are going to really really really be doing yourself a disservice and depriving yourself of wonderful boon-shik food. A trendy Korean street-food restaurant in Annandale. It's bit hard to locate this place as the signs aren't very visible from Little River Turnpike, but it's located right next to the Palace Restaurant, but the entrance to Red Holic isn't as same as Palace, so if you go into Palace thinking you can park there and walk to Red Holic, you've been warned. Anyway, the restaurant is pretty small and you actually have to stair DOWN to enter this place. I feel like this place used to be like Jackson Hewitt or some sort of local tax center, but renovated into a trendy, cute, and chic Korean joint serving comfort foods from the mainlands. Kudos! Korean street-foods consists of ramen, spicy rice cakes, kimbap, fried vegetables, tenpura, and other finger foods. Because they're mainly sold on streets in Korea, the prices aren't high, so you can enjoy variety of items without having to worry about big bill at the end. This place actually takes a step further by creating a giant trey that includes 5-6 items that's large enough for two people at $20, so if you're first timer, new to the Korean street foods, that will serve your purpose of visit. Kudos again! A friend, who lived in Korea until 26 and now been in America for a year, thinks this place is a hit and will do very well in Northern Virginia where many people crave for the street-foods and there aren't many options to enjoy. This place invested bit effort into making the interior look very modern and bright (Red everywhere!) so it could be a very cute date place for couples. I went with a dude, so epic fail on that part. There is a little private room in the back, which is why I thought this place used to be some sort of office, is now being utilized as private room for large group. I think this is a huge plus for the restaurant as there WILL BE CHURCH GROUP coming here as party of 12. Instead of taking of 3 tables and half of the restaurant, they can be caged into that private room and order the entire menu. I don't think restaurant management thought of this, but they happened to have that private room and wanted to make more rooms for tables. Quick service and tasty food served hot? I'm a fan! Red Holic serves Korean street food, which, as we all know, is the very best kind. My boyfriend and I started out with the "ManDuk" platter, which came with six mandu (fried dumplings) and a bowl of dukbokki (rice cakes in a spicy sauce). Yum! The dukbokki here isn't as spicy as I've had it in the past, which is a good thing for me because I'm lame at handling super spicy food. We also had to get the chicken, of course. We got the korean fried chicken with sweet & spicy sauce, which came covered in deliciousness. A bit messy, but really tasty, and definitely different than Bonchon-style chicken. We also got miso soup and two different kinds of radish with our meal -- the traditional white cubed sweet-pickled daikon and the yellow pickled kind that I can't remember the name of right now. Service was friendly and quick, although coming in at 9:15 with a 10:00 closing time meant we had to pay our bill before we were done eating, and felt a smidge rushed at the end to get on out. I would definitely go back to Red Holic next time I'm craving some chicken without the Bonchon wait-time (or crowds), hehe. I wanna try the massive sampler platter next time! read more

A new Korean diner tucked into a semi-basement of Annandale, VA definitely delivers for Korean comfort food. Next to more popular Palace and only a few blocks from Shilla and a few other more famous Korean pit-stops like Ara & BonChon, a great alternative with some different options than the aforementioned popular joints. They serve the double-fried Korean fried chicken that has become all the rage lately, and it is almost as good as BonChon. Now that the Annandale Bonchon has been surpassed by the far superior (in service & variety of options) Fairfax and Centreville Bonchons, Red Holic is a viable option when you crave the delicious chicken. Additionally, they have a variety of combination boxes that include some of the Korean street food and fast food that is flavorful and even a bit healthy compared to their American diner alternatives. The bang for your buck is in play here, as most of the food is quite cheap. The tempura plate is large and flavorful and comes in several sizes, a nice addition to the other options on the menu. The servers were very friendly (not always a given in some of the spots in Annandale, not naming any names) and most spoke English if needed. Overall, a good experience that was a little different than the plethora of Korean food found in Annandale. If you thought Korean food was just meat plates and kimchi, the multitude of options available in Annandale continue to prove that misconception wrong. Enjoy! read more
