The decor is pretty simple. There's a few private tables away from the main arrangement of tables. There are about 5 parking spots right outside. Shin Chon is very popular at noontime with Koreans. When we dined here, we were the only non-Koreans. We noticed that other customers seated themselves, though we let a server seat us. I'm thinking that many people who come here know already what they want, because even before we cracked open our menus, the server was immediately at our table expecting us to place our order. When we told her we weren't ready yet, she left, but came back less than a minute later and then stood there waiting for us to place our order. So I ordered the Sullangtang, which is bone broth with brisket and noodles. JP ordered the Yukgaejang, a spicy red broth with veggies and flank steak. We also ordered the fried dumplings. I don't know if the fried dumplings were vegetable or pork, but they were very good, made even better with a delicious dipping sauce. As hoped, banchan was served with our meal, but was just cubes of daikon radish (kkakdugi) and kimchi. The kkakdugi and kimchi were fresh and tasty. Even if the Sullantang recipe is traditional, I was disappointed. The broth was thin and very bland. However, I was able to jazz it up and make it into a pretty good soup by adding spoonfuls of the Yukgaejang broth and the fried dumpling sauce, plus salt and pepper. The Yukgaejang, topped with crispy noodles, was the better of the two soups. It had a lively flavor and as billed on the menu, was indeed spicy. The menu is limited, almost exclusively vegetable and beef dishes, but there is a seafood pancake and whelk (mollusk) dish. No chicken or pork dishes. Ever since my cousin recommended me this spot a few weeks ago, I've already been back 3 times. I think this place has one of the best seafood pancakes that I've had in a very long time, and I always order it everytime. I'm pretty picky about seafood pancakes as they can be too thick/doughy, the seafood is too chewy/not fresh or has too many veggies. This one is perfect and even the sauce it comes with is pretty addicting. The seollongtang is also great and I was surprised by their mushroom version that is on their "new" menu. The flavor is deeper and the mushrooms add an interesting texture. Every time I've visited the resturaunt has been super packed, even on Christmas day! But the service is always fast and efficient. Stopped by here for lunch. We wanted cold noodles (naeng myeon) and this was open (they open at 9:30). Why'd we come to a seollungtang place for naeng myeon? Because people on yelp said it was good. I liked the interior; it had traditional Korean decor and was dimly lit. I got the mul naengmyeon while my mom got the bibim naeng. Mul naeng was so mid. Noodles were nice and al dente but broth sucked. Bibim was good; the sauce was on the sweeter side. Service was responsive. They happen to seat us under the tv. Our server stood a table away from us the entire time in a nearly empty restaurant- it was so burdensome. When I asked my mom what she thought of the food, she wouldn't answer because the server was within earshot the whole time. It took me a while to figure out why she was lurking nearby for the entire meal- she was watching tv. Noodles perfectly cooked (chewy), refreshing sliced cucumbers, thinly sliced egg, tomato and with the best black beans with green kernels milk broth. I have come here twice, once at 8:30 PM and again a few days ago at 8:07 PM. On both occasions, the posted business hours clearly stated they were open until 9:00 PM, and the neon "OPEN" sign was still lit. However, when I walked in, the waitress immediately told me they were closed and refused to seat me. I politely asked why, since both the posted hours and the illuminated sign indicated the restaurant was still open, but she could not provide any explanation. I then asked to speak with the manager or owner, but no one came to address my concerns. If the restaurant regularly stops serving customers before 9:00 or at 8:00 pm, then the posted hours should reflect that. Leaving the "OPEN" sign on and displaying business hours until 9:00 PM while refusing customers well before that time is misleading and frustrating. I hope the owner is aware of how customers are being treated, because this happened to me twice. If the policy is to stop seating guests before 9:00 PM, please update the posted hours or clearly state the last seating time so customers don't waste a trip. read more

This is a pretty cute spot with very limited parking, which I luckily got upfront of the restaurant. The restaurant is run by an all Korean staff and they are super kind and helpful. There's some decent amount of space in the shop that could accommodate larger parties, but it is definitely made for smaller gatherings. I had gotten the sullungtang and the sea food pancake. So if I'm honest, I thought that the soup could be a little bit more flavorful, I had to put in a lot of salt and green onions that help balance it out. The meat was minimal but tender and good. There was this small hole in the wall sullungtang place in MD that had great deep flavor that I'm comparing too and this unfortunately just didn't have enough for me. The banchan was only kimchi and Kkakdugi, which all had great flavor and crunch and is a must with sullungtang. The service was fine. They seat you right away. For water, they give you Kirkland water bottles at your table. We ordered dumplings and bone broth soup. The soup is watery and milky. We definitely gave it a good try. We read about how you should add salt to it for flavor, but even with the salt, it was pretty bland. The dumplings were good. The broth is milky but you do have to remember to season it with salt, which is placed at the table. They also give you a container of green onions to add to your heart's content. It was hearty and comforting, and the brisket was tender. The portion of noodles was also decently large, although it didn't look as large as the galbitang. The galbitang is not too flavorful but not bland either. The meat was super tender and plentiful. The standout was probably the haemul pajeon, which was crispy and had a decent amount of seafood and sweet vegetables. It's definitely a portion worthy of the price and I'd definitely come back to get it. They offer Kirkland water bottles for the table and their kimchi was sweet without much fish sauce taste! We had yukgaejang, and sollongtang, both of which were better than what we have so far had anywhere in the NYC area. Service was fast and they replenished our kimchi upon request.
