This place is a cute establishment in DT Deep River. I had heard a few good things about it & I dropped in to see for myself. The staff are pleasant, helpful & efficient. They have a great selection of menu items. Their beer, wine & cocktail list was very well rounded. The interior is decorated in a warm eclectic theme. I just grabbed a beer. I settled on a Moroccan lamb over noodles but was surprised when I was served a small soup bowl of stew. It had a 1-2 Tbs of clear celluphane noddles at the bottom. While it was solidly good, It was $14- which I found to be exorbitant for the item & serving size. It didn't even come with bread of any kind. I then ordered a house made pretzel $10- which came in a single braided format 10-12 inches long. It arrived with 2 ramekins of cheese sauce & stone ground mustard. I opted for the mustard. I did not care for the cheese sauce. It was okay but I was definitely not bowled over by it. Overall, I just wasn't too impressed with this place. The service was solidly good. The vibe & interior is solidly good. The food was fine but not great. I felt the prices for the items were just too high. They do have a happy hour with a burger & a beer for $12-? We had an amazing dinner at Red House. Friday night in Deep River and there is a line at Red House, twenty five minute wait is not so bad. We were seated at the bar- I like sitting at the bar with the communal feel. The staff was hustling. We ordered drinks, they came quickly. We were at the bar. Then an app. We got the fried green beans. Crispy and delicious. For dinner I got the Vegan Thai noodle bowl. Toni got the veggie burger. The noodle bowl was awesome. Fresh flavors of ginger and peanut. Toni's veggie burger was well dressed with mozzarella and pesto. The fries were perfect. Crispy and salted just right. Service was great. Someone who struck me as the owner/manager checked in on us a couple times and we chatted with regulars at the bar. Dinner for 2 with an app- under $100. Great experience. The atmosphere is fabulous. Staff go above and beyond. They make you feel like you're part of the family. We had a nice Sunday lunch. Mark was awesome. He opened bottles of wine and was so happy to accommodate us and teach us about the beauty of ha bing a good wine. We had a wonderful education on wines and tasted great wines. Stopped by last Sunday evening. It was our first visit in over 5 years...as Deep River is a little out of our orbit. The facility was quite different from our recollections...very Red! Our waitress, Laura, was very welcoming and knowledgeable of options, etc. We started with their special Jameson Pineapple Wings and a Mai Thai. The wings were about the best wings we've ever had ...second only to J Timothy's Sweet Chili Dirt Wings up in Plainville! My Wife enjoyed the Fish Tacos & I had the Ruben. I haven't been here in years, but had fond memories so I wanted to come back. Brought a friend who had never been here and insisted we got the pulled pork nachos. The drinks were on point and the nachos were over the top great, as I expected. My friend from the south was very impressed with the pulled pork. Very balanced spice and smoke flavors. A group of us visited this quaint little restaurant in a typical small New England town. The lighting and ambiance was peaceful and the decor was typical of a bar/cafe style joint. It was very busy and quite loud. We were seated close to the kitchen. Our food was very good and the waitstaff was friendly, despite being obviously busy and serving several tables at once. The only thing I found to be a bit unnerving, were the prices. I mean, a small burger and a tiny basket of fries was almost $20.00. Don't pass by this place - this restaurant has some of the best food I've ever had. I ordered the Steak Frites and I was blown away: the steak was cooked to perfection, the truffle fries were so good you'd slap your momma, and even the vegetables were so perfectly seasoned that I almost asked for more. My wife ordered the Burn Ends and she was well-pleased. She wasn't a fan of coleslaw, so I ate that - nice and crisp, on the sour side if that's what you like. In the area Sunday to cover our boat and found this place for lunch. I read the good reviews on Yelp and even saw people comment on other restaurant reviews about this place being better. I didn't see a parking lot, but was able to get a spot on the street out front. Walked in and it was not at all what I was expecting. I had it in my head that it was going to be a nice, maybe even fancy, restaurant. It was pretty empty and we were greeted right away. We asked to sit in the bar area so we could see the football game. The waiters/bartenders were awesome. So friendly and made us feel very comfortable right away. We started with Bloody Mary's which were the Sunday special for $5 each. Very good and a great deal! I had the spicy chicken sandwich special, which was lacking in spice. I still enjoyed it though. The chicken was cooked perfectly. My husband had a burger, which he enjoyed and my son loved the tenders and fries. Next time we are in the area, this may be the first place I stop. Drinks came out decently fast. Husband's water came in a ridiculously small glass. She did give us the decanter after he drank the water in 2 minutes. She made it seem like she was doing us a huge favor. It's water. Food took a long time to arrive considering it appeared rather dead inside. We both got burgers- both were a nice size. I got the Hot Mess and it was delicious. I thought the onions were great, as was the beer cheese. I had asked for it to be cooked medium and it was medium rare at most. I didn't care but thank God they cooked Picky Pete's well done as requested. He got the Red House burger which is maple bacon, cheddar and a Chipotle sauce. Of course he requested his plain with just bacon and cheese which apparently affected the flavor because he said it was bland and had to salt the patty. The fries were standard bagged fries. Only ate a few. A young man dropped off our food and we didn't see our server again until we were completely finished eating and we asked for the check. Bathrooms were clean. We love this area of CT and always look for something new when we are out this way. We found Red House one afternoon this fall and couldn't have been happier! They have a rock & roll decor and vibe inside with some great photos of old rockers, a dining area, and a bar area for seating. They had many interesting craft cocktails, and an interesting selection of beers, and the food was absolutely delicious. Our waitress was really nice and quick with our refills which is always a bonus. Try the duck wings, and check out the specials. First of all this is really a good looking place right in the town. The staff are helpful and the food is pretty good. The French onion soup is interesting with a bit of pepper after taste. 60's vibe. Nice find and a fun place to visit. We've been here twice in one week already due to the food, environment and friendly staff! Red House has indoor/outdoor seating and plays 60's music. Both times we started with their Buffalo Wings-ok, I'm giving them best wings in CT award. We especially loved the sweet chili ones. Meals ordered included, Steak Pad Tai (Ample amount of steak and nice flavor), Fried Chicken Sandwich (Big piece of chicken and tasty), Verano Salad (I was told it was delicious) and Seared Shrimp Tacos (I was told it was especially delicious as well). I had a shrimp from one of the tacos and decided that that was going to be my next meal when we go back. The shrimp were large and the one I tasted was soooo darn good. OK can we talk? How have I NOT BEEN to the Red House?! In business for years, I have drove past this popular place but never stopped... using the Red House's music themed decor as the song goes, "I once was lost but now I'm found - I was blind but now I see." First everyone was so nice and accommodating. Food and drink suggestions were spot on. We started with a seasonal drink that included muddled fruit right from the garden. For apps their famous Mean Beans - fried green beans with chipotle sause. Add drinks to this addicting snack and you need nothing else, fried to perfection - no greasey no mushy. Next was Chili with Cheddar - in the best way possible this Chili was different than most, fresh ingredients cooked perfectly especially the diced peppers and onions (melt in your mouth), It was a perfect starter because it was light and flavorful.The Red House sweet chili wings were, well, sweet and moist with the right amount of crunch and flavor. As I have stated before I travel extensively across N. America and I only order Brick Chicken in Chicago... NOT ANYMORE! Everything on the plate was cooked perfectly but of course the star was the deboned "Brick Pressed Chicken" with potatoes carrots and broccoli, just outrageously delicious. Desert was heavenly - Sticky Toffee Cake served warmed (not easy to do right - House does it perfect) with vanilla bean ice cream and whipped cream. Out Of This World and one of the best deserts ever. The Red House is the best example of flavor without excess. Each and every dish and even the drinks did not scream any one thing - all flavors were balanced and matched. I have a lot of years to catch up on - I might just go down the menu. There were good options for pleasant Outdoor Dining. The Menu offered a good range of options a. Specials, b. appetizers c. Entrees, d. Desserts, e. Cocktails f. Draft and Bottled beers. The portions were ample. We had several boxes of special dishes to take home. As we progressed more people came in and mad ethe dining room a livelier place and the staff were efficient and friendly. Both the Lavatories were all gender - clean and neat. They talked to us and other customers. I was able to talk to Laura and another wait person about one of heroes whose picture was on the montage in front of my seat on the wall- The Man in Black- Mr. Johnny Cash and his second wife June Carter Cash and his daughter Roseann Cash and a few of the recordings and his struggles. This was very nice indeed. The service for Laura and others was excellent, personalized and very helpful. The Ambiance with the colorful Decorations using portraits of great Rock and Roll artists and Discs on the walls was very welcoming for me to connect up with my memories over the past several decades. while enjoying great food served very kindly and attentively. The Berkshire Lager tasted light but had perhaps 7.5 % alcohol. I was able to reconnect with the taste of Czech Pilsner like beer in a snifter after many years. The delicate yet spicy taste of the Wings was a great start for our evening meal. Then came ethe PEI mussels with chorizo and corn in a wonderful sauce which would have made a great soup like mussels' version of the Rhode Island Clam Chowder. The mussels were tender and had absorbed the complex aroma and flavor. The Brick pressed half Chicken with fingerling potatoes was also well done. The Chicken was tender too. We were tempted to try dessert and selected the Choclate Churro. There was great melted Chocolate for adding extra yum. We left with great memories and several boxes of yummydelectable food. The restaurant is classic-rock-themed; the food is that one song you think nobody can be a real music lover if they don't appreciate all the loving details. The fries are the percussion: reliable, crisp, on point. The sandwich... due to the fondue cheese, it has to be lush instrumentation backing pithy lyrics. The meat was shaved pork, so there's a little soul in the rockin' roll. Springsteen would eat this sandwich. The pickle... the pickle is the bass solo that gets voted into the top 20 of all time.
